HSE operates more than 100 research institutes and centers, and more than 30 international laboratories led by foreign scholars, including the Nobel laureate Eric Maskin and the Fields medal laureate Andrey Okunkov. It was the first state-run university in Russia to recruit international academic professionals. HSE’s top five areas of research are social sciences, mathematics, computer science, arts and humanities, as well as economics, econometrics, and finance.

National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) is one of the participants in the 5-100 project. The goal is to bring Russian universities to the 100 best educational institutions in the world [1] . Despite the name, the university trains specialists not only in the economic fields. HSE students study in 11 areas, including social, legal, science, computer and other fields of science.

Higher School of Economics was founded in the fall of 1992. A few months later, the first master's degree program in economics was opened in the Russian Federation on the basis of the university. To prepare teachers, the university leadership organized regular internships for employees in foreign universities. The invited foreign professors, who taught part of the lectures for students, helped to adopt international experience in economic theory. In 1994, postgraduate studies opened on the basis of the Higher School, the university began training legal and social specialists. 1997 was marked by signing of an agreement with the London School of Economics and opening of the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF). From that moment, one of the first double degree programs in the Russian Federation appeared at the HSE. At the very end of the 90s, the university switched to a modular training system: 4 modules per year, 5-6 disciplines in each. As a result, students were able to increase the number of hours for self-study (up to 60%). In the early 2000s, the HSE expanded significantly. Over the course of several years, 8 new faculties were opened, and the HSE Academic Fund was founded [2] . In 2009, the Higher School of Economics was awarded the prestigious status of a National Research University [3] . From that moment the development of their own standards of educational programs began.

The structure of the HSE

Higher School of Economics has 4 campuses located in Moscow and branches of the university in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm. Undergraduate and graduate students are trained at 16 faculties of the university. On the basis of the HSE, there is a lyceum for students in grades 9-11, in which university teachers train students in 10 areas.

English-taught undergraduate programs

Higher School of Economics offers discounts on tuition to international undergraduate applicants in the following categories:

No discounts are availbale for students applying to the programs with no state-funded places, including double-degree programs with the University of London and Kyung Hee University.

To maintain the discount for the whole period of studies a student should have no reprimands and regularly demonstrate high academic performance [4] .

HSE quota international students have the opportunity to receive the same scholarship as state-funded students. The standard state academic scholarship is about 17  USD per month. The decision to provide an increased state academic scholarship is made on the basis of the student’s achievement and the number of applicants (only 10% of the recipients of the standard scholarship are eligible). The monthly amount paid to the students is between 55  USD and 218  USD .

In addition, the university provides an opportunity to participate in independent scholarship programs funded by partners.

The benefits of studying in HSE

  • Prestigious diploma. HSE ranks 1st in the annual international subject rating among Russian universities [5] . The Higher School of Economics is consistently included in the top 5 Russian universities for the employment of graduates [6] .
  • Applied education. Since 2014, undergraduate programs provide for compulsory project activities , which account for 20% of the workload. Students learn to apply their knowledge on real projects: they develop marketing plans for companies, website designs, accounting of financial records, etc. The site has a corresponding section where you can select projects to participate in.
  • The ability to influence the content of the curriculum. Starting from the 2nd year, HSE students can take elective disciplines of their choice in an individual curriculum.
  • International cooperation. Short-term and long-term exchange programs , international conferences , lectures from leading teachers of Europe, the USA, and China enable students to integrate into the international environment.
  • Free education and discounts on tuition. The relatively high cost of training programs (an average of 4,367  USD per year) can be partially offset by a discount system. The university has a program to support talented students, which provides for a discount of up to 70% of the total cost of training. Almost every program has seats that allow you to study for free.

International preparatory programs

For applicants from other countries, the Higher School of Economics has a preparatory department for teaching the Russian language and general thematic disciplines. International students can choose between three programs available at the HSE.

Requirements for admission to HSE

For admission to the HSE, foreign applicants must undergo remote or face-to-face testing in 2 subjects according to the schedule . It is necessary to register for the tests through the personal account no later than 1 week before the test. The exam programs and samples, as well as minimum required scores, can be accessed on the website .

The results of the Global Scholarship Competition can be also considered.

In general, the process is made up of the following steps:

  • Choose 1-2 programs you want to apply for;
  • Create a personal account on the HSE website ;
  • Submit an application with all the necessary attachments as PDF files;
  • Sign up for the online or face-to-face entrance examinations;
  • Take exams according to the Qualifying Events Schedule ;
  • Wait for a final decision to be published on the ‘For International Applicants’ page in your personal account;
  • Prepare a set of documents and submit them in the section ‘Offer of Admission’ within 40 days from the decision in your personal account;
  • Get your academic credentials legalized and recognized in Russia;
  • Apply for a visa (if applicable).

Admission process for graduate students is just a bit different from that of undergraduates:

  • Choose up to 2 programs you want to apply for;
  • Upload your portfolio (all attachments as PDF files) before the application deadline;
  • Submit an application in English or Russian;
  • Pass an individual online interview with coordinators of the chosen Master’s program;
  • Wait for the selection committee’s decision to be posted to your personal account;

The portfolio must include the following:

  • Scan of your diplomas and academic transcripts;
  • Scan of the certificate of prior education with transcript, or the most recent transcript;
  • Letter of motivation (maximum of 500 words);
  • Resume/CV (if applicable);
  • Proof of language proficiency (if applicable);
  • A letter of recommendation;
  • Other documents per request (depending on the program requirements).

HSE admission timeline

  • Translated and notarized copy of the passport or other ID;
  • A translated and officially legalized copy of the certificate of prior education with transcript, or just a transcript if the documents are submitted before graduating;
  • Original Scholarship Application completed in English with a picture in the upper right corner signed by the applicant (if applicable);
  • Standard general medical certificate copy;
  • Medical certificate copy indicating HIV test results.

International cooperation

One of the development priorities of the HSE since its inception has been an active exchange of experience with foreign educational institutions. As of 2019, HSE University had 421 cooperation agreements with organizations from 69 countries [7] . The Scientific Research University is a member of 4 university-wide and 10 subject-specific international associations [8] . As a part of the interaction, joint research, conferences are held, double degree and student mobility programs are implemented.

Dual degree programs

Dual degree programs of the Higher School of Economics and foreign universities are mainly designed for master’s students. An exception refers to several 4-year Bachelor’s programs in economics and politics, implemented jointly with the London School of Economics or Kyung Hee University .

For graduate students at the Higher School of Economics, there are about 60 double-degree programs. Curricula are developed in conjunction with partner universities from the United States, Europe, China and Asia. As a rule, one year of study takes place at the HSE, another – in the territory of the foreign educational institution that participates in the joint program. Graduates receive a master's degree in HSE and a foreign diploma from a partner university. To participate in the program, several conditions must be met:

  • High GPA for academic performance;
  • Language of study proficiency (must provide the results of such tests as IELTS, TOEFL , TOEIC etc.);
  • Presence of recommendations from the program manager;
  • Competitive portfolio (for some areas).

Academic mobility programs. Stages of selection

HSE students actively participate in international exchange programs with partner universities. Each year, the commission considers more than 1000 applications for 370 competitive quota positions. Tuition is paid by partner universities, students cover all other expenses (visa, travel to and from the host country, accommodation, meals, insurance, etc.). Reception of applications opens 2 times a year: for autumn programs it starts in February, for spring in August.

Students can submit an application both on a free and on a paid basis of full-time education. Students without academic debts who have successfully completed 2 years of bachelor’s / specialist training () or 1 year of master's / doctoral studies are allowed to participate in the competition. The Commission gives preference to those who participate in such programs for the first time. The main stages of selection are:

  • Choosing a student mobility program. A catalog of relevant programs is published on the HSE website . To participate in the competition, you can choose the program of no more than 3 partner universities, placing them in order of priority.
  • Determining the budget for participation. It is necessary to make an estimate of the upcoming costs of the program (payment of certificates, visa, flight, rental housing, etc.). You can calculate the approximate cost of living in the selected country here .
  • Filing an application. You can fill out the digital form after the start of the competition is announced. Required documents and certificates must be attached to the application in PDF format.
  • Information on the results of the competition. The decision of the selection committee based on the selection results is announced 30 days after the deadline for applications. Information is reported at the email specified during the registration and is not subject to appeal.
  • Preparing for departure. Before leaving for training, it is necessary to take part in indicative meetings for those nominated for international exchange programs. During the meeting students discuss possible issues of stay and study in the selected country. Students on Moscow campuses must attend in person. Webinars are organized for students at HSE branches.

HSE Business Education

HSE offers 58 full-time, part-time, and remote professional retraining programs lasting from 8 to 24 months. Training is conducted in 11 areas:

  • Business Informatics;
  • Finance and credit;
  • Economics and property management;
  • Foreign language;
  • Management;
  • Corporate governance;
  • Logistics and supply chain management;
  • HR Management;
  • Sports management;

Especially popular is the unique program for Russia MBA in Business Analytics , which has been accredited by the National Expert Council for Business and Management Education, NASDOBR [9] . The number of people who want to enroll in training annually exceeds the number of places on the course, which leads to the early closure of registration. The program provides the most relevant knowledge and skills in the field of general and IT management, develops a systematic approach to management. The cost of a 20-month course is 6,987  USD .

Additional education

HSE+. The project of the Higher School of Economics for úndergraduate and graduate students, designed to develop additional competencies of students:

  • Language (English, French, German, Chinese, Spanish, Italian);
  • Professional (marketing, finance, law, linguistics, etc.);
  • Soft skills (time management, business communication, conflict management).

Winter schools. Traditional activities during the winter holidays for students who wish to continue their studies at master’s level. Classes are taught in 13 areas, including the School of Law, Social Sciences, and the School of Business Informatics. The format of winter schools is lectures on the subject, presentations of industry leading companies representatives, project activities. HSE provides students with free attendance accommodations and meals. A student needs to pass a selection process to attend.

Student life

In addition to studying, students can join a variety of club organizations: sports, music, cinema, travel, charity. The HSE Theater conducts classes in acting and stage speech, regularly puts on plays, and participates in city festivals. There are about 40 HSE championship teams in the university’s football (soccer) league . The project "Muzvyshka" unites student music bands of Moscow. The HSE pays attention to the future career of graduates. The Career Development Center consults on resume writing and successful interviewing. The site publishes vacancies and internships from potential employers. To ensure that graduates feel confident even at the very beginning of their careers, classes on solving business cases are regularly held at the HSE. More than 5000 students learn the trends of modern business, develop team cooperation, decision-making and leadership skills.

Infrastructure of the Higher School of Economics

The main building of the Higher School of Economics is located in the center of Moscow on the busy Myasnitskaya Street near the metro stations Lubyanka and Chistye Prudy. Here you can fight the main part of the faculties. Several buildings of the university are located separately, in different areas of the city. All university buildings have Wi-Fi access. Some buildings are adapted for people with disabilities. There are ramps at the entrance, toilet rooms on the 1st floors, equipped with handrails and special cabins. Most buildings have their own libraries and canteens.

At the disposal of the Higher School of Economics are 10 dormitories located within Moscow and the Moscow region. Some have gyms, laundromats, and student canteens. The cost of living is set in the range of 800–18  USD per month, depending on the hostel.

"Campus Dubki" is located in the Moscow region, Odintsovo. 3 multistoried buildings can house over 5,000 nonresident and foreign students. Accommodation is provided in 1, 2, 3 and 4-room apartments with balconies and equipped kitchens. The town has a medical center, ATMs, gyms and separate rooms for self-training. The cost of living is 60  USD per month.

Student feedback on the HSE

Pros. In the educational process, students note a small number of general subjects, sufficient time for self-study and the value of a diploma, which allows you to easily find work after graduation. One of the important advantages, according to students, is the availability of lecture notes prepared by previous students and free attendance at theoretical classes. Many people like the opportunity to participate in creative events, gain additional skills in project work.

Cons. A lot of deadlines that are impossible to postpone, the remote location of the buildings and poor technical equipment of the classrooms are the main complaints in the reviews of most students. A complex training program and problems with the schedule are noted by students of some faculties, for example, law, foreign languages.

Mission Statement

The Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow, Russia, was established in 1992 on the initiative of renowned Russian economists (Evgeny Yasin, Yaroslav Kuzminov) and leading reformists from the Russian Government (Yegor Gaidar, Alexander Shokhin, and others) with the purpose to promote economic and social reforms in Russia through education of a new generation of researchers and practitioners, production and dissemination of modern economic knowledge among Russian business and government, as well as giving rise to new ideas for economic and social reforms and formation of new corporate strategies. The HSE is a new-type university project, conceived by professional community with support of the Russian state and business. In 1995 the HSE was awarded university status. In cooperation with leading European universities, such as Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, it established itself as a leading university in Russia in the field of economics, social and political sciences. The HSE is ranked among the top-three most popular and prestigious universities in Russia. In 2003 the HSE became a member of the European University Association (EUA) and joined the Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) programme of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Higher School of Economics is a research university that carries out its mission through research, instruction, design, expert analysis, as well as social and cultural activities based on international academic and organizational standards. Since 1997, the Higher School of Economics and the London School of Economics and Political Science (a division of the University of London) have been carrying out a project unique to Russian education. Instruction at the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF), entirely in English, is offered in programmes selected by the HSE’s U.K. partners. Graduates of the ICEF’s Bachelor’s programme receive two degrees – from the HSE and the University of London. Graduates from the ICEF Master’s programme receive a degree from the HSE and an official certificate from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Instruction at the ICEF is tuition-based. The Higher School of Economics was the first state university in Russia to recruit specialists on the international academic labour market. HSE’s Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) regulates all the main hiring procedures for international recruitment and coordinates the activities of internal and external experts under search and selection committees in each discipline. The HSE regularly hosts academic discussions in which international experts take part. The most notable event is the annual April International Academic Conference on Economic and Social Development. Researchers from Russia and abroad attend alongside heads of the Russian government, Russian Presidential Administration, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, as well as the major Russian and foreign companies. Since October 2012 HSE participates in the implementation of the EUNEG TEMPUS Joint Project 'European Neighbourhood Policy Law and Good Governance (EUNEG)'. The project supports the development of higher education reform in partner countries (Russia, Ukraine and Moldova), through cooperation with EU and in convergence with Bologna process and with EU developments deriving from the Strategic Framework for European Cooperation in education and training (ET 2020) and Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth (Europe 2020).

International Role

HSE rated as one of the leading youngest universities worldwide (QS 50 Under 50), the best Russian university in the field of Art&Design (QS-2021), the best design school of 2021 according to World Brand Design Society (WBDS). HSE Art and Design School plays a vital role in building up international relations with partners from Art and Design sphere. The School cooperates with foreign partners such as museums, galleries, funds, schools and universities in order to raise the awareness among public of the value of design. To deliver our ideas, together with various institutions , we promote cultural events, joint students projects, exhibitions, public lectures. Our professors take part in different international events devoted to art and design, for example Venice Biennale, Ars Electronica, Typo talks, Dutch Design Week and others. Moreover, they give public talks in foreign institutions and companies and manage their personal exhibitions and contests.Two years in a row together with Ars Electronica International Festival, HSE Art nad Design School organize 'HSE Garden Pavilion', a platform that represents young Russian artists worldwide. Within the UK-Russia Year of Music 2020 and Germany-Russia Year of Culture 2021 HSE Art and Design School managed various educational programs and events. We believe that cross-cultural exchanges are crucial in education and help students and teachers to transform art and the world around them, change their way of thinking, bring new ideas to life and make it better.

National Role

HSE Art and Design School plays a key role in the development of education in the sphere of Art and Design in Russia, It delivers research and policy programmes advising the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation on the role of design for innovation. Within this tasks it organizes and takes part in industry-wide policy conferences and summits. In collaboration with other institutions and organizations HSE Art and Design School promotes strategies, which help to build up fruitful cooperation between the government, industry, education and design society. Due to the status 'National Research University', HSE Art and Design School has an opportunity to develop its own educational standards, which after implementation are adopted on the national level. Moreover, HSE Art and Design School, together with business and government representatives, works on new professional standards. HSE Art and Design School is an active participant of such regional comissions as: The Interdepartamental Working Group on regional branding and urban development of Main Department for Architecture and Urban Development, the Moscow region; Expert Council for Education in Art and Design, Moscow Culture Department. The School together with Design Laboratory work on different projects for Ministry of Economic Development. For example, we developed a two-year development program for Satka, it is a monotown, which is far from regional centres. The program included the urban and environmental development, educational and cultural part (public lectures, work-shops, exhibitions), project on the reconstruction of some cultural sights (libraries, monuments, local museum and cultural centre), We also try to participate in social projects and help different institutions. For example, last year, we made a design-concept for N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center | UICC and coloring books for children. Our team created a corporate identity for and design of the events devoted to 20th Anniversary of The First Moscow Hospice. Our students participated in the contest of social posters, which was organized by the Northen Administartive District of Moscow and won the first prize.

In less than a decade, our school has become the youngest, fastest-growing design school in Russia. We are proud to be a subdivision of the Higher School of Economics, which is rated as one of the leading youngest universities worldwide (QS 50 Under 50) and the best russian university in the field of Art&Design (QS-2021). KOSHS highlights ladder safety for National Safety Stand-Down Week

The 11th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction will be observed May 6-10. visoot, stock.adobe.com

Falls from elevation rank nationally as the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among workers. In 2022, falls accounted for 700 construction worker fatalities, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. To address this, the 11th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction will be held from May 6-10, 2024. Established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), this initiative aims to raise awareness and promote fall prevention practices in the construction industry.

During the 2024 National Safety Stand-Down, OSHA, along with the National Safety Council and numerous other organizations, urges employers to allocate a few minutes during the week for discussions on fall protection and safety measures when working at heights.

A safety stand-down is a practice in the construction industry where construction activities are temporarily halted to provide an opportunity for employers and employees to engage in discussions about identifying hazards, implementing preventive measures and reinforcing safety protocols.

To promote this year's Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance (KOSHS) program at the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center has released a Hazard Alert to bring awareness about the increasing risks associated with ladder-related accidents.

"We've seen a concerning trend of ladder-related falls in Kentucky, with 447 construction worker injuries leading to lost work time between 2013 and 2022 and, unfortunately, eight fatalities during the same period," said Rebecca Honaker, research director for KOSHS.

Hazard Alerts are short, informative bulletins for stand-down trainings designed to raise awareness about specific dangers in the workplace. They typically are two pages long and are intended to help employers and workers understand and avoid workplace risks. They include real-world examples of workplace incidents, relevant statistics, safety recommendations for employers, and additional resources for further information on the specific hazard being addressed.

The Hazard Alert issued in advance of this year's National Safety Stand-Down highlights two fatalities that occurred in Kentucky. One involves a 52-year-old carpenter who was taking measurements for a plywood installation at a restaurant. Witnesses reported that while there were several scissor lifts available, the carpenter chose to use a 6-foot fiberglass step ladder while his co-worker used a 10-foot fiberglass step ladder. While holding one end of a measuring tape and reaching beyond the side rails, the carpenter's ladder tipped over, causing him to fall onto the concrete floor. He died from the injuries sustained in the fall three days later.

A company representative told KOSHS investigators that the company did not have a formal safety program in place.

“Working from heights is inherently risky, and it's critical that employers and workers prioritize safety at all times,” said Honaker. “A small slip on a ladder can result in severe injuries or fatalities. Constant vigilance and proper safety measures are the only way to prevent these tragic outcomes."

The Hazard Alert provides eight recommendations derived from best practices established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, with additional input from industry experts.

The recommendations are:

Train each worker to recognize and minimize ladder-related hazards.

For work at heights, consider using a scaffold or aerial lift. The wider work platform and guardrails reduce the risk of falling.

Inspect ladders for defects or damage each time they are used. If a ladder is damaged, tag it “do not use.”

Make sure the ladder is positioned on level, solid footing.

Always check a ladder’s duty rating to make sure it will support the weight of you and your tools.

Position the ladder as close as possible to the work being done to avoid overreaching. Keep your body centered between the side rails of the ladder. Even a slight overreach can lead to a fall.

Secure the area around ladders that are placed in locations where they can be bumped, such as in passageways or doorways.

Never step on the top rung of a ladder.

KOSHS has produced toolkits on  Preventing Falls in Construction  as well as  Preventing Falls through Skylights  that contain educational materials employers may want to utilize for their stand-down events.

KOSHS, an occupational surveillance program of the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center and the Kentucky Department for Public Health, monitors workplace fatalities and develops toolkits, fatality reports, and Hazard Alerts to provide targeted recommendations for workplace injury prevention.

Third Year of Geriatric Medication Safety Symposium Focuses on Transitions of Care in Older Adult Population

May 6 — More than 120 practitioners, researchers, students and postdoctoral trainees exchanged insights into "Optimizing Safety in Care Transitions for Older Adults" during the 2024 Geriatric Medication Safety Symposium April 25-26 at UTHealth Houston's Cooley University Life Center in Houston's Texas Medical Center.

In its third year, the event drew in-person and online participants from fellow Texas Medical Center institutions and community organizations from across the Greater Houston area and beyond. The symposium featured four plenary sessions and two workshops from the perspectives of nursing, pharmacy, medicine and dentistry, which also provided continuing education credits to attendees. In addition, early-stage faculty members, graduate and professional program students, and postdoctoral residents and fellows presented 21 posters and four podium talks on their research.

Funded by a five-year grant from the National Institute on Aging, the symposium was co-chaired by Rajender R. Aparasu, Ph.D., FAPhA, University of Houston College of Pharmacy Mustafa F. & Sanober Lokhandwala Professor and chair of the Department Pharmaceutical Health Outcomes and Policy, and Holly M. Holmes, M.D., M.S., AGSF, Joan & Stanford Alexander Chair in Gerontology, professor and division director, Joan & Stanford Alexander Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine at UTHealth McGovern School of Medicine. 

"The response of health care professionals and investigators committed to improving the quality of care and quality of life of our older patients by sharing our experiences and research has been tremendous," Aparasu said. "I commend our outstanding plenary session and workshop leaders for offering their expertise on highly relevant and timely topics as well as the thoughtful, high-quality studies conducted by our podium and poster presenters."

Leading the plenary talks and workshops were:

  • Yong-Fang Kuo, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics & Data Science at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), who presented the plenary session, "Medication prescribing by nurse practitioners"
  • Timothy P. McNeill, R.N., MPH, founder of consulting firm Freedmen's Health, who gave the plenary talk on "Deploying interventions to address health-related social needs (HRSNs) to improve medication adherence during transitions of care"
  • Amanda S. Mixon, M.D., M.S., MSPH, associate professor of medicine and bioinformatics at Vanderbilt University, who shared the plenary presentation, "Lessons Learned from Multi-site Medications Reconciliation Studies"
  • June Sadowsky, DDS, MPH, professor and dentist geriatrician at UTHealth School of Dentistry, who led the workshop, "Dentistry: Transitions in the Caring of the Elder Population"

Two participants were recognized for excellence in research presentations:

Bilqees Fatima, Pharm.D., M.S., UHCOP Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences-Pharmaceutical Health Outcomes and Policy Concentration candidate, won Best Poster Award for her project, "Group-Based Trajectory Modeling for Assessing Oral Endocrine Therapy Adherence Pattern in HER-positive Breast Cancer Patients at DHR Health in the Rio Grande Valley"

Sadaf Milani, Ph.D., MPH, University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Internal Medicine assistant professor of geriatrics, won Best Podium Presentation for her project, "The Association of Dementia Medications with Pain Medication in Dementia Patients with Chronic Pain."

Cameron students participate in National Conference on Undergraduate Research

Ten Cameron University students and a recent graduate journeyed to Long Beach, Calif., in April to present their research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), presented by the Council on Undergraduate Research.

Timothy Ballard, an English education major from Cache, submitted a paper titled “"Frankenstein’s Symbolic Eco-Feminist Agenda." The paper was based on research performed in Dr. John Hodgson’s Studies in British Literature course on “the gothic” in Fall 2023 and examines critiques of the patriarchal domination of nature in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel.

Katherine Bartek, an English major from Lawton, submitted a paper focusing on “Queer and Transgender Representation in Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein.’” Also developed in Hodgson’s gothic literature course, Bartek’s paper analyzes the characters of Victor and his creation as outcasts from society, showing the novel’s potential to resonate with marginalized communities today.

Marlow’s Aubrey Hewitt, who graduated in December 2023 with an Associate in Science degree in business, submitted her paper, "The ‘Same Old Shit’: Seeing Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Artworks Through His Black Vision." Her paper was developed in Dr. John Morris’ African-American Literature course.

Landon Holley, a senior physics major from Duncan, presented a poster focusing on ionospheric drift using ionosonde data. The results of this research can be important in terms of space plasma studies and space weather predictions, which play a significant role in radio and satellite communication as well as GPS navigation.

Jennifer Lane, a physics and engineering major from Fletcher, also presented a poster. Lane has been analyzing the light curve of exoplanets, which are planets in other solar systems. She is part of an exoplanet watch program via NASA’s partnership with the MicroObservatory Robotic Telescope Network at the Center for Astrophysics/Harvard & Smithsonian and Las Cumbres Observatory, a network of 25 telescopes at seven sites around the world.

"The Role of Trauma and Love in ‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison" was the paper submitted by Kaley Muse, an English major from Lawton. Developed in Dr. Carie Schneider’s Studies in American Literature: American Gothic course in Fall 2023, the paper analyzes the interplay between the bonds of family love and the traumatic aftermath of slavery as depicted in Morrison’s Pulitzer-prize winning novel.

Brooke Nicholson, an English education major from Lawton, conducted a poster presentation focusing on “Satire in the Magical World.” Her research provides new insights into “Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix” that reveals author J.K. Rowling’s hidden social criticism of the U.S. education system.

Torie Ortiz-Jones, an education major from Cache, presented a poster based on her personal experience with Cowden Syndrome, a genetic condition that is characterized by the presence of multiple non-cancerous tumor-like growths and an increased susceptibility to certain cancers. Her findings indicated that being able to isolate a specific gene and making testing more accessible would help more undiagnosed patients get testing and treatment.

Ryn Swinson, an English major from Duncan, presented her paper, “Gender Performance and Heteronormativity in ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’.” Swinson’s paper builds on research conducted in Schneider’s Literary Theory class in Fall 2023 to analyze the relationships and self-presentation of female characters in the 1991 film.

Gina Welborn, a strategic communications major from Lawton, submitted a paper called "How Fiction Authors Can Use Cultural Communication Differences to Enhance Conflict in Dialogue." Welborn’s paper uses Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” as an example text, applying intercultural communication theory in order to identify key elements of creative writing craft.

Marlow’s Emily Womack, an English major, submitted a paper called "Finding Literary Freedom.” Based on research conducted in Dr. William Carney’s Intro to Literary Studies course, the paper takes Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” as a case study of book bans and censorship, arguing for the importance of access to challenging texts.

Shaping tomorrow: Charting NUS’ impact on talent, solutions and society

A breakthrough in affordable cancer monitoring; an AI-powered solution revolutionising workplace safety; a medical student’s rewarding journey as a mentor for disadvantaged youth – these stories of ingenuity, grit and humanity are among the highlights of the National University of Singapore’s newly published impact report.

In its second edition, Impact for the Future presents the University’s strides in effecting change in the areas of talent, solutions and society from 2019 to 2023. It details the diverse ways in which the NUS community has made its mark in Singapore and the world.

“Impact is built upon shared passion and commitment,” said NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye. “Reading our stories of impact – from students sharing about how they have grown through service learning, to researchers speaking about the problems they hope to solve – was meaningful to me, and I hope they can inspire others as well.”

Shaping Future Talent: Nurturing changemakers

One of the key areas of impact highlighted by the report is the University’s work in shaping talent, from producing strong graduate employability outcomes, to contributing to larger nation-wide efforts to upskill and reskill.

Exploring the impact of undergraduate education, the report found that 1 in 2 students venture abroad at least once during their time in NUS, while 8 in 10 are enrolled in an interdisciplinary college, where they study across diverse domains and subject areas, gaining a holistic perspective on complex issues.

Moreover, all students have engaged in service learning as part of their curriculum since AY 2021/2022, gaining insight into social issues while working with community partners to advance social services and community building.

One such student is Celest Chiam, who mentored secondary school students as part of the Teach SG programme.

Teach SG equips NUS students with the resources, funding and skills to mentor disadvantaged children and youth. Since its launch in 2021 , the programme has empowered nearly 1,650 NUS students to mentor 3,600 beneficiaries. It has also been made available as a practicum under the Communities and Engagement Pillar within the General Education curriculum, which is read by all undergraduates.

“My experience with Teach SG has taught me that there is so much joy in giving, and I have been motivated by my mentees’ eagerness to learn and positive attitude to learning,” said Celest.

Shaping Future Solutions: Tackling real-world problems   

An increase in international collaborations, high-impact publishing, and platforms that address emerging issues like heat resilience and sustainability in medicine: these are some of the highlights in the report’s assessment of how the University is shaping future solutions.

Nearly half of the University’s research publications feature in the top 10 per cent of the most cited journals globally, and its Field-Weighted Citation Impact – which measures how well cited a publication is compared to similar publications – is 2.0, up 13.6 per cent from the last five years.

Over the same period, research funding surged to S$4.3 billion, enabling breakthroughs in areas like quantum technology, sustainability solutions and biomedical science.

The University has also been active in turning research into practical solutions. The past five years have seen 2,369 new patent applications, more than half of which are in the physical sciences. Through NUS’ entrepreneurial ecosystem, researchers and budding entrepreneurs are provided with expertise, funding and connections to realise their ideas.   

Bearing testament to this is BeeX, a start-up founded by NUS alumni Grace Chia and Goh Eng Wei specialising in underwater autonomous robotics solutions.

Grace and Eng Wei had received support from the NUS Graduate Research Innovation Programme, as well as platforms like Technology Transfer and Innovation—NUS Enterprise’s technology translation and commercialisation arm—and PIER71, an ecosystem of maritime veterans and experts, technology, entrepreneurial know-how and investment opportunities.

“PIER71 provided us with wider exposure to the maritime sector for growth, outside of our core work with energy and infrastructure players,” said Grace.

In 2021, BeeX secured significant seven-figure seed funding from Cap Vista, the strategic investment arm of Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency. Two years later, it received the prestigious Enterprise Singapore-Innovate UK grant. Today, BeeX continues to thrive as it prepares to launch BETTA, its newest hovering autonomous underwater vehicle designed for inspecting offshore wind farms, later this year.

Shaping Future Society: A catalyst for good

NUS’ longstanding legacy of service to Singapore—and the ways in which its students, staff and alumni continue to uplift the communities around them—is also featured.

The University has enhanced access to education , with nearly 3,000 students benefiting from zero tuition fees annually. Additionally, 1 in 2 undergraduates leverage various financing platforms to support their education, totalling more than S$787 million—a 28 per cent increase compared to the previous five years.

Playing an instrumental part in shaping public policy, the University has embarked on 100 collaborative research projects with governmental organisations in Singapore and received more than 13,000 citations related to public policy research.

Such efforts extend beyond home as well, such as with the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health’s initiative in optimising tuberculosis case-finding, treatment and prevention in Cambodia, through which NUS researchers actively engaged local communities. From 2019 to 2022, they screened over 150,000 individuals, diagnosed and cared for more than 3,000 people with tuberculosis, and facilitated preventive treatment for over 3,000 others.

Assistant Professor Yi Siyan, who heads NUS’ health office in Cambodia, emphasised, “Working closely with local partners at every stage of our research helps to foster ownership. It enables us to better translate research findings into policies and actionable steps that can benefit those on the ground who need it the most.”

Shaping a Sustainable Future: Towards a greener tomorrow

The coda of the report touches on a universal challenge: climate change. The University’s drive towards a more sustainable future is propelled by efforts in education, research, innovation and community engagement.

These touch points are easily accessed by the NUS community – whether it’s in the over 800 sustainability-centric courses that students can choose from, or in the campus that they traverse daily, which features net-zero energy buildings, solar-powered outdoor Wi-Fi and electrified shuttle buses.

The proportion of faculty participating in sustainability-related research has also increased – by 30 per cent – over the past five years.

One such research effort is led by the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, which seeks to harness nature and natural processes to mitigate greenhouse gases.

The Centre is at the forefront of Carbon Integrity SG , a S$15 million research initiative which monitors natural habitats around the region to map nature-based projects that can be developed as potential sources of high-quality carbon credits.

“We have a much better understanding of the value of nature now, and the importance of harnessing nature as part of our solutions against climate change. When it comes to nature-based climate solutions, we are moving very quickly in the right direction,” said Professor Koh Lian Pin, Director of the Centre.
