Band 9 essay sample: Should subjects like mathematics and philosophy be optional at school?

There is no denying the fact that subjects like mathematics and philosophy are difficult for many students. This, however, does not mean that they should be made optional. Children need to master at least the basic concepts of these subjects to be able to get on with their lives.

Not all students want to be engineers or bank managers. They don’t have to be either but they should still be able to do addition and subtraction. They should understand the concepts of multiplication and division. If they lack these skills, they will find it difficult to manage their everyday life.

Mathematics plays a very important role in our life. Children will not remain children for life. The will become adults a few years down the lane and then they have to manage their finances. Students who didn’t study mathematics at school will not be able to take care of their finances. The fact that they don’t have even basic math skills will also affect their employability. No employer will hire someone who can’t even solve simple sums.

The same is true in the case of philosophy as well. It is not a subject that many students can digest. However, it offers a better perspective on life and helps us to cope with the ups and downs of life.

The existing education system allows students to choose subjects of their preference when they start university education. In my opinion, children should be taught all subjects at the school level. They can choose subjects of their preference when they go for higher education.

To conclude, I strongly disagree with the view that subjects like mathematics and philosophy should be made optional because such a decision will do students more harm than good.

IELTS WRITING TASK 2 ESSAY - AGREE DISAGREE - EDUCATION - MATHEMATICS AND PHILOSOPHY

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that some subjects such as mathematics and philosophy are too difficult for children to learn at school. They think that these subjects should be made optional rather than compulsory.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER: 279 words - Band 6.5 to 7.0

Many argue that children should be allowed to choose what kind of subject they want to study. In particular mathematics and philosophy are considered too hard for school children. I completely agree with this statement and in this essay I will explain my point of view and give some examples from my experience.

Firstly, children should have a choice to select what kind of subject they will learn. Some subjects are boring and difficult, philosophy for example is too complicated for young children, it is similar to religion and the textbooks are not clear even for adults. For instance, when I was at university, I studied philosophy for one year. However, by the end of that time I didn’t feel that I understood anything from my professor or the books he forced us to read. As a result, I feel I wasted my time and my money.

Furthermore, new subject are more exciting and more important than these boring ones. Nowadays, everybody must learn about information technology and our computers and calculators can do the mathematics calculations for us. Therefore, children do not have to learn boring subjects such as mathematics any more. For example, my children are learning how to make applications at their primary school and they use their laptop computers at school for every subject. My son laughs when I ask him if he can calculate. He says, he doesn’t need it because he designed and application which can calculate for him.

In conclusion, I completely agree that students should have an opportunity to select the subjects which they need or find interesting because they have a wider range of interesting choices and more advanced technology.

There is a growing debate as to whether some courses such as mathematics and philosophy should be optional in lieu of mandatory since many young learners find these subjects strenuous. In the case, I put forward the view that these subjects ought to be obligatory.

To commence with, there are myriad reasons in favour of mathematics to be compulsory in preliminary education. The most prominent one is problem-solving skills set. Mathematics teaches how to think critically and logically about a situation; which in turn hones children’s competencies such as analytical ability, reasoning, problem-solving ability, creativity and even effective communication skills to mention but a few. Apart from it, these skills set underpin the study of other subjects. That is to say that mathematical procedures and notions are used to solve the problems in physics, geography, economics, computer science, accounting to name but a few. For instance, the knowledge of complex number is essential used to clarify many concepts in Electronics. Therefore, mathematics is the language of science.

Likewise, philosophy is of profound importance for young learners. The word stems from Greek words meaning love of wisdom. Philosophy uses the lens of reason and logic to analyze the approach in which we experience the world. Therefore, introducing philosophy to pupils at a young age provides them with a great opening to cultivate their sense of astonishment. Accordingly, it helps develop children’s’ ability to ponder on big question and think independently. A growing number of researches has discovered that children who participate in philosophy class once a week considerably boost their literacy and math skills.

In conclusion, mathematics and philosophy inculcate in children the attitude of reason, logic, curiosity, and so forth. Therefore, these subjects ought to be introduced into the preliminary curriculum.

In this day and age, most young generations are not interested in lessons such as math and philosophy because they are difficult to learn. In the following paragraphs, I personally agree with this statement for some reasons that I will proffer justifications of this phenomenon before sharing my opinion.

One of the primary reasons is that many kids tend to learn about sports. It is argued that they could get more achievements such as scholarships by certificate. A case in point is that In the USA, numerous pupils can easily continue their studies in top universities if they have certificates such as rugby. As a result, many students prefer to join sports rather than other lessons.

Another reason is most international pupils are fond of selecting their favorite subject like Laws, not to mention economics and politics. It is because they will obtain good pay for their jobs. A good example of this is that law learners experienced an increasing number of their subjects as they could be occupied working as judges, lawyers, as well as prosecutors. Thus, many youth will choose these subjects since they get more information, for example jobs.

All in all, It seems to me that many young people dislike subjects like math and philosophy owing to the fact that they could not get more achievement and good work after their studies. Hence, children opt for good subjects as they suggested by their parents and it gives a positive effect for them as they might gain many opportunities in the future.

Lately, the content of the curriculum in some universities is becoming a topic of public interest. There is a school of thought holds that the theoretical subjects should be removed from the curriculum because the student’s preferences are practical lessons. Although this belief has many benefits, I am convinced that it does more harm than good. There are many compelling advantages of abandoning mathematics and philosophy in the university. Firstly, thanks for reducing the number of subjects, students can ease the colossal study pressure, which leads to depression, even suicides. Secondly, instead of learning something which is considered useless, they have a chance to spend their time and attempt to widen knowledge and practical skills in their main major. Moreover, spare time is also used for other purposes, such as: doing a part-time job for income, traveling and exploring new activities as a recreational purpose and enlarging their grasp. Notwithstanding the aforementioned advantages, removing theoretical subjects can have a huge adverse bearing on students as well as society. It can be easily observed that modern science, technology, and utilities are the results of historical theories, which are contained in theoretical subjects. Learning these kinds of subjects acts as a precursor to the deep understanding of the origins of both advanced devices and social problems. Moreover, seizing all these theories is a major contributor for students to easily figure out the solutions in practical circumstances. In conclusion, absorbing all the meanings of theoretical subjects is a vital determinant in which students can apply these things to pressing problems and practical programs. I am totally convinced that universities shouldn’t remove theoretical subjects from the curriculum
