Winter Break Homework

Ahh, winter vacation. Something that teachers and students often look forward to in order to enjoy a well deserved break! However, sometimes this means our students are getting perhaps a larger break from learning than we want them to! I love to incorporate all kinds of winter themed activities this time of year to keep the kids engaged! This fun, free, and editable winter break homework provides a great way for students to keep up some skills and good habits over break, all while still enjoying their time off!
*Pair with our Snow Centers & Activities for Pre-K/Kindergarten !
When my students are away from school for a holiday or extended break, I want them and their families to enjoy the break and not worry about “homework.”
However, I also know that several of them may not do any reading at all over the break (and we know how important reading is!) Unfortunately, this sometimes happens to the ones who need it most.
So I send home this fun little sheet to motivate families to work on some skill building over the two week break. It is simple and kids love to complete it for a little prize ( eraser , candy cane, bookmark ).
If you love this winter break homework challenge then be sure to grab the Spring Break version too !
Homework Directions
The directions couldn’t be any more simple! The students complete the various tasks on the mugs, and color them in as they do! Easy! Yet still educational and important!
Maybe you don’t teach Kindergarten, or maybe you prefer to have different directions at the top. Good news is that this document is now completely editable!
That’s right, you can type in your own directions as well as your own tasks on the mugs!
Note: I also allow all students the chance to complete the sheet with me for a prize, especially if I know of any situation where they maybe didn’t have parent support to complete it. I will count with them, help them with sight words, etc. and count it as extra practice when they return so that they can feel proud of accomplishing it too!

When I try to print the mugs. All that shows up is the words, no mugs
I’d be happy to help you troubleshoot this issue.
You’ll want to make sure you are using an updated version of Adobe PDF Reader.
You also want to make sure you are opening the email from a home computer and not at school. District computers tend to not like our emails with links in them.
Please let me know if you have any questions?
Do you have a spring break version of this?
Hi Deonna, That is a wonderful idea! I will pass the message along to Alex and see if this is on our spring plans!
I’m also looking for the Spring Break Challenge! The Winter Break Challenge was great and very effective motivating my students! We start Spring Break soon!
Check your inbox for a message from me. : ) I just finished up the spring challenge for the Sunday Surprise today and will be putting it up on the blog later, but I sent a copy your way via email. So glad you will able to use it either this year or next!
The Spring and Winter Break Challenges are fantastic! Thank you so much for helping my students motivated to practice their new reading and writing skills!
Thank you so much for making this editable! I’m a bilingual teacher and now I can make a Spanish version for my students and their families!
This is wonderful, Barb! This makes our hearts so happy. Have fun with the Winter Break Homework Printables!
You always have such great ideas. Thanks for sharing so many with us.
I am happy to Jennifer, and thrilled you find them helpful! 🙂
Thanks so much. This is perfect as I have some parents who enjoy putting their kids to work and some who believe holidays are holidays. A happy medium 🙂
Thanks Rachael! I felt the same – the kids totally need a break, but this kind of gave an idea of some activities to try too if the parents wanted to give it a go! 🙂 Plus, since it’s editable, you can put good ol’ playful activities on there too, whatever you like!
Could you share the source of your font in the editable document please? Thanks!
Hi Chris! The credits for fonts and graphics are on the first page when you download the powerpoint. 🙂 The font that is used specifically in the parts that you can edit is called KB Alpha Basic and should embed when you edit. It (along with many others) is a font that can be found for purchase here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FONTS-MEGA-PACK-Commercial-Use-License-All-KB3Teach-Fonts-160-Font-BUNDLE-1551950 Hope that helps!
Oh dear. How did I miss that? I even checked to see if the font source was provided in the document. Thank you for pointing it out and providing the direct link for me in your reply. 🙂 Guess I’m just having one of those moments (or days or weeks — lol).
No worries at all Chris! It’s December, that is reason enough! December is crazy for teachers! 🙂 Have a great week!
Hi Alex… I love this idea but am having trouble editing it. I have PP but there are no text boxes when I click on the mug. Am I doing something wrong? Diane

22 Winter-Themed Activities for the Kindergarten Classroom
When it’s time to come back from winter break or Christmas break – it’s time to hit the ground running in kindergarten. There is explosive growth that happens from now until the spring in both reading and math.
Let’s capitalize on that learning-growth spurt and plan some great winter kindergarten activities .
Here are winter-themed math, science, and literacy-based activities, along with some art projects, crafts, and a set of free worksheets that I have found.
I hope they can be helpful to you as you make your January and February lesson plans.
Math activities
Here are two math resources that help you pick up where you left off in December and grow your learners.
Winter bump
Grab this free winter-themed math addition game for kindergarten. Your kinders will play “bump” using dice and linking cubes (or another manipulative) and work on adding numbers.
You’ll love that this game includes multiple levels so it’s already differentiated for you.
Frozen composing teens
Practice composing numbers 11-19 with this fun, Frozen-themed game . Students play on a printable game board, moving characters like Sven and Olaf after they make numbers using groups of tens and ones.
First one to the snow-capped village wins!
If you have a class that loves Frozen movies, you may just want to use this entire Frozen unit for the month of January.
Winter estimation
As students are learning larger numbers in the second semester, capitalize on seeing such numbers with this simple estimation activity .
All you need are fingerprints and cotton balls! So fun and perfect for winter.
I think it’d be a great tie in to using ten frames to predict how many and record their findings.
If you want to differentiate – just use the polar bear template laminated and use marshmallows to estimate. [Use mini-marshmallows for students who can count up to 100, regular-sized marshmallows for students working with numbers to 30, and jumbo marshmallows for students who can count to 20.]
Science activities
Let’s dig into science with simple, standards-based activities.
Expanding snowman
When the snow hits your area (or grab a bag of ice at Sonic or ice cubes and grind them in a blender) then you’re ready to make an expanding snowman .
You can easily make this as a class, or the supplies are cheap enough for everyone to do the activity. Use brand-name freezer storage bags for best results.
Students watch Alka-seltzer interact with snow and you can observe and discuss what changes take place.
Did you know you could make this?
I think this super-strong snow slime recipe would make for the coolest writing springboard…
Let each kinder have a turn to create a scene – snap a photo and print it out for them to use as a book front cover or writing prompt illustration.
Go from science to writing in one awesome afternoon.
Here is a great alternative snow slime recipe that doesn’t require hard-to-find ingredients.
Igloo STEM challenge
Students plan and design how to make an igloo in small groups using simple supplies. Then they test out their plan by using the simple materials.
Grab some marshmallows, frosting, and use the empty frosting container – this could be fun!
Turn this into an individual STEM challenge by substituting mini marshmallows and a condiment cup or styrofoam cup as a base.
How do penguins stay dry experiment
Explore how penguin feathers help them to stay dry in the Antarctic waters.
I like this idea since it is really simple and uses materials that are easy to produce in the classroom. Each student can do this activity.
Another good activity that explores how arctic animals (including some penguins) stay warm is to make a blubber mitt . We did this every year as a whole group experience.
An alternative idea is to crease the paper down the middle and only color on one half of the penguin. That way students can see what would happen if the oily residue didn’t exist on the penguins feathers.
Literacy-based activities
Let’s connect reading skills to all things winter.
The Mitten easy reader
This is a free printable emergent reader that comes in four different levels. You can make a set to keep in your classroom or make one for students to take home.
This is based on the popular book, The Mitten.
Here are a few more resources and activities you my like based on The Mitten for kindergarten:
- 50-page free “The Mitten” unit
- Retell “The Mitten” to ‘The Farmer in the Dell’
- Symmetrical mitten art project
Sneezy the Snowman
Enjoy exploring these 5 clever Sneezy the Snowman kindergarten activities – they are awesome!
This story is hot on most kindergarten teachers’ lists. It’s a cute read aloud and these activities make it super simple to extend the story.
January kindergarten read-alouds
Read books! January is a great time to fit in extra read-alouds.
Here is a list of great read-alouds for January to go along with the winter theme (and many of these resources on this list).
Art activities
These art activities turn out beautiful. Each project focuses on the creative process and each kinder’s creation turns out unique.
Winter mittens art – warm and cold colors
These tissue paper mittens turn out beautiful. The warm and cold color contrast turns makes these stand out as a beautiful display.
Here’s how to make it:
- Cut warm colors of tissue paper and glue it onto a mitten outline . Cover it completely and past the edges.
- Cover it with Modge Podge to make it shiny and everything lay flat.
- While it’s drying, paint a background piece of paper by dabbing on blue and white paint – mixing the colors with a sponge.
- Add white snowflakes (maybe stickers, stamps, confetti or die cuts) on the blue background.
- Cut out the dry mitten.
- When everything is dry, glue (or hot-glue) a clothespin on to hang the mitten in front.
Pull-off polar bear paint project
Oh my goodness. I love this pull-off painting project with winter colors ! Although – you could totally do it with any shape if you didn’t want to do a polar bear…
Use a combination of strong fingerpaint paper, tempera paints in blue and white, and an artic animal cut from a piece of newsprint paper.
The process is rather simple, a little messy and the final product turns out awesome.
Oil pastel and watercolor snowflakes
We did this and I loved it! {okay, my students loved it too}
Investigate how the shapes of snowflakes are unique (using your favorite books and videos) and then create a snowflake masterpiece .
Students will draw a snowflake using a pattern, outline it with white or gray oil pastels. Then by painting a background in shades of blue and purple watercolors, the final product is just as unique as each snowflake!
Snow crafts
Here are some snow-related crafts that are just right for the kindergarten classroom.
Snowman craft
Cut some simple shapes to make this snowman craft . The perspective of the snowman looking up to the sky is what makes this uber-cute.
You’ll need construction paper, scissors and crayons or markers to make this one happen.
Planning for a sub this month? Stash this project away for them to work on with your class.
Snowman directed drawing
This turns out so sweet! A snowman directed drawing art activity with step by step directions so everyone can do it
Sponge-painted snowflakes
Cut a large, simple snowflake shape from blue construction paper to make these sponge-painted snowflakes .
Make splotches of blue and white paint and then dab to begin blending the colors together. Finish off with some glitter. Beautiful!
Other winter resources
Here are a few more worthwhile-mentions of winter-themed resources I didn’t want you to leave without seeing.
Paper plate snowman
Snap a quick cute photo with this easy paper plate snowman craft . You can also skip the popsicle stick and print an enlarged photo of your students face in the hole.
This would make a great display piece to accompany a writing prompt of “if I were a snowman.”
Winter worksheets
Oh man, you know that I loathe worksheets , right? But, I also know that a time comes when you need to pull one out or find one you like and want to use it in your centers as a rinse-off overhead .
So, if you need some worksheets to stash in your substitute folder for January – this printable worksheet set is just right for kindergarten standards.
Let’s wrap it up
There you have it – winter activities for a kindergarten classroom that are fun and hands-on.
I hope these can help you save time as you plan your lessons.

Free 15+ Winter Worksheets for Kindergarten: Instant Download and Easy Print!
Looking for a fun way to squeeze in some learning with your younger children during this blustery season?
I know it can be difficult to keep their attention when the air gets crisp and they want to go outside and enjoy a snowy day!
Your curriculum may be feeling sort of stale as you start moving to this point of the year. Pulling out some themed worksheets can really help to mix up your routine and add in some fun.
These free winter worksheets are packed with all the winter theme learning you could want!
You will find printable activities such as a maze, winter season coloring, sorting, and more! But you will also find important kindergarten skills, such as number recognition, handwriting, writing skills, early literacy skills, and fine motor skills.
****Don’t stress! You can grab these winter themed worksheets for your kindergarten students in a PDF file today! At the bottom of the post you will find *super simple* instructions – no email address needed!
Let’s Look At Those Free Printable Winter Worksheets!
How fun is it to practice counting and number recognition with things like sleds and hot cocoa?!
Some older kids may not be challenged by these seasonal worksheets, but it is still an important skill to solidify.
If your younger kids struggle with counting, encourage them to make a pencil mark on each item as they count to avoid double counting or missing an item.
This printable worksheet braids multiple concepts together: color recognition, color words, and matching uppercase and lowercase letters.
Notice that each color word is printed on a colored pencil to help early learners who are still working through these sight words.
To complete, have the student color each mitten – matching the correct color to the correct alphabet letters.
Don’t worry, there is a more difficult sheet coming up that does not have the help of the colors!
****If your child is struggles with this concept, check out these free worksheets – Matching Uppercase and Lowercase Letters
I love this cute winter scene!
Spend some time looking at the winter wonderland with your child and go through the included questions.
Enjoy discussing all the winter activities one could enjoy with so much snow. Everything from snowball fights, snow angels, making snowmen, or even some ice hockey…if you imagine a lake close by.
Depending on your child’s skill level, allow them to write the answers, copy the answers, or let them dictate to you.
Another fun activity with winter math!
Instead of just choosing the correct number this time, they will write the number themselves.
I like to keep a number line available that they can always look at until they can easily remember which way the numbers face.
An acrostic poem is a great way to introduce young kids to poetry!
Help your child to brainstorm and think through all the fun activities that make up winter. Then work together to arrange those thoughts into a poem.
Consider suggesting some words and emphasizing the first sound in the word. See if they can identify where it should fit in the acrostic!
Again, they will likely struggle to spell the correct words. Take the pressure off by providing a word bank of ideas you came up with together or having them dictate their ideas to you.
Here your child can practice reading more color sight words, tracing, and coloring!
Can your student skip count yet?
These free printable penguins are a fun way to get more practice in!
To complete, have your student write their numbers in the correct order from 1-20. On the following page, have them skip count by 10 from 10-100.
If your student struggles to skip count or to write the numbers, provide a number chart to help.
Yep, there are even more winter coloring pages in this free set of worksheets!
Your student will have a great time coloring their favorite winter clothes!
Ask your student what they would want to wear this winter.
For an extra activity, have your student draw a person, cut out their favorite winter pieces, and paste them on their picture!
This worksheet is a no-stress way for your kindergartener to use winter-themed words to write about their favorite winter activity!
Maybe it’s eating snow ice cream, going sledding, making the biggest snowman, playing winter games, putting on ice skates, or just sitting by the fireplace with family.
Focus with your student on when to use capital letters, how a sentence should end, and writing complete sentences.
As I’ve said before, at this age it is okay (and expected) that they copy most words off the board. Spelling will come with time.
Finish by allowing your children plenty of time to illustrate their winter pictures. For an extra good time, provide craft supplies like a cotton balls and glue to bring the image to life!
Learning syllables is an important part of kindergarten and first grade.
Your student will have such a fun time practicing this skill by clapping out words like snowflake and polar bears!
To complete, have the student color the circle with the correct number of syllables in each word or word phrase.
This is a creative way to work on sorting and scissor skills – with a winter twist!
To complete the sorting activity, have your child cut out each of the squares at the bottom of the page and paste them into the correct season.
Although, your kids may surprise you. Some people do use flip-flops, shorts, and lemonade in the winter!
Consider having them paste some pictures in the middle that can be used in either season.
These winter patterns are perfect for the homeschool kitchen table or classroom math centers.
To complete, have the student cut out the squares at the bottom of the page and finish each pattern.
Rhyming is also an important skill for kindergarten and first grade students.
Help the student correctly identify each of the classic winter vocabulary words – hat, coat, sled, snow, and shovel.
Complete by drawing a line from each word to the corresponding rhyming words – bow, bed, cat, boat, and bubble.

5 Must-Give Winter Break Homework Assignments
Jen Schneider Blog , Reading 0
This post contains some affiliate links. Purchasing from these links helps me keep this blog running to share education ideas with this community. Thank you for supporting teachers! It’s almost winter break and your students are going to be at home with family, eating, possibly playing video games, and maybe even enjoying some snow! You want to make sure they are learning, right? Winter break homework is essential! Send home these 5 assignments to give over winter break to make sure your students come back to school ready to learn!
1. Be kind.
Kindness doesn’t cost a thing. First, encourage your students to choose kindness every time they can. Hold the door open for a stranger, bite their tongue when they really want to snap at a sibling or a parent, and do a needed chore without being asked. #Bekind may seem like a trendy mantra for schools, but it’s really a way of life that spreads the holiday spirit. Winter break homework should be all about kindness!
#BeKind can't just be a hashtag. We have to live and model it to our Ss every day. In your words online and in person, show those around you at even though it can be tough to #choosekindness , you never know what someone is going through. Learn their story and #bekind . pic.twitter.com/ACymQgmuVz — Jen Schneider (@jenmschneider) August 7, 2018
2. Sleep in.
Teachers, students, parents all deserve some rest! When we get time off, we should use it to let our bodies relax. School starts so early for most kids, so give them an assignment to sleep in a bit (with parental permission and without sleeping the whole day away, of course)!
3. Spend some time with people you care about.
No matter what holiday (if any) your students celebrate over the break, hopefully they will be surrounded by people who they love and care about. Keep in mind, this isn’t the case for every student in your school.
For some, school is their happy place, and home is not the best place to be. For these (and really all) students, make sure they know how much you care before they leave for the break. I don’t send my 100+ middle schoolers home with gifts (I have to watch my wallet too), but I try to let them know every day (through words and actions) that I really do care about them. If you’re worried about a student being safe over break, you should let a counselor know. If it’s more than just a worry, make sure to go through the proper channels to report suspected abuse.
4. Take a nap.
Even if your students slept in, they could take a nap (provided they wake up before nap time). I promise, I will be taking a mid-day snooze on December 26 after my sugar cookie coma and Lego overload (holy cow my daughter has some Legos under the tree. . .shh. . .) subsides!
5. Read. . .anything.
OK, this sounds like a true homework assignment, but I am simply recommending for my students to read ANYTHING over break. Turn on the closed captioning on YouTube videos and Netflix shows. Read a blog post or a web article about Minecraft. Take a trip to the library and check out the latest Neal Shusterman Scythe book or an inclusive LGBTQ YA title . Anything goes over winter break. JUST READ!
Here are a few favorite titles I recommend!
Elementary Readers:
- Pax by Sarah Pennypacker
Middle School Readers:
(My middle schoolers recommend these titles!)
- The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die by April Henry
High School Readers:
- I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
Check out some places to find FREE ebooks online !
These 5 homework assignments to give over winter break will have your students back to school refreshed and ready to learn in January! Of course, sending students home with bundles of worksheets, packets, and work is not recommended. “Homework” should be about enjoying time with family and a well-deserved break for teachers and students!

FREE Winter Pre-K/K Pack {Updated and Expanded}
By thisreadingmama 19 Comments
My Winter Pack has been updated and expanded! It includes:
- 2 emergent readers with multi-leveled activities (appropriate for early readers through Kindergarten)
- phonics works (for upper and lower case)
- early reading activities- rhyming words, syllables, letter sounds
- fine motor work- tracer pages, lacing cards, and poke page
- concept sorts and activities about Winter
- FREE download link is at the END of this post!
*This post contains affiliate links.
The activities in my packs are similar to those from Reading the Alphabet and are not necessarily those that you can print off and hand to your child right away. They require a little bit of prep work. But I think that you’ll find the effort worth it as the activities are hands-on and engaging. The materials I use to prepare and implement the packs are pictured above.

- The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Neitzel – a rhyming book about all the things we need to wear to play in the snow. Kids enjoy acting this one out and adding each layer of text.
- 100 Snowmen by Jennifer Arena – This book is geared more towards K-2nd grades, but younger kids may enjoy the humor and math included. This is a book that I’ve included in my 100th Day of School Read Alouds .
- All You Need for a Snowman by Alice Schertle – Just one snowflake. That’s all you need for a snowman, right? I love how the author interacts with the kids in this book and together the reader and author build a snowman…and a snowman buddy.
- Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London – It doesn’t matter where I read the Froggy books. Younger kids love them! They especially enjoy the sound effects and the predictability of Jonathan London’s Froggy series .
- Winter Wonderland by Jill Esbaum – this National Geographic book has phenomenal photographs and helps kids understand the concept of winter.
- There was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow! by Lucille Colandro – My 4 year old loves all the books in this series and asks for them over and over again.
- The Snowman by Raymond Briggs – a classic wordless book that will have kids asking for it again and again!
- Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner – seriously a favorite book everywhere I’ve read it. And the hidden pictures are just the icing on the cake. You will want to collect the entire Snowman series !
- The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats – such a CLASSIC! If you don’t own it, you seriously need to consider buying it and keeping it!
- Snowballs by Lois Ehlert – such a creative book, making snowmen out of common objects, which can lead to some snowman building around the house, too!
- The Mitten by Jan Brett – Upon the first reading, my kids loved guessing what would happen to that mitten. Can all the animals fit?
- Snow by Uri Shulevitz – the story of a snowfall from a hopeful child’s perspective with stunning images
- Owl Moon by Jan Yolen – This is my favorite winter book for older kids. Filled with imagery and beautiful images, I LOVE to read this one!

Winter Break Packet Ideas for Upper Elementary {Freebie Included}
Each year, I seem to go back and forth about whether or not to send a winter break packet with my students over winter break. Ultimately, I always decide to send something for a few reasons: 1.) I always have a handful of students who specifically ask for a packet and 2.) The majority of my students do not go on vacation and most don’t have things to occupy their time. Keeping these reasons in mind, I do a “no obligation” winter break packet each year and many of my students complete it.
Winter Break Packet: “Fun” (and FREE!) Printables
To keep the packet engaging, I always like to mix some “fun activities” in with the academic based activities. These activities are still skill based but on a lower academic level that is less threatening for the students. This “fun” winter break packet includes a variety of printables such as a word search, a making words printable, and a color by number multiplication practice page.
This choice board printable is one of my favorites. Honestly, you could just send this one choice board home with your students. This would be perfect for teachers who are limited on copies or really don’t want to fuss with a complete packet. It has a variety of different tasks for the students to choose from so they are bound to find something engaging to work on during break. I kept the directions generic and left a blank so you could write a minimum choice requirement if you wanted to do so.
If you are interested in sending the FREE Winter Break “Fun” Packet from the first home with your students over break, click HERE to download it.
Winter Break Packet: Academic Printables
In addition to the above activities, I sometimes (depending on my students) like to include a few academic activities in the students’ winter break packet. I pull resources from my Winter-themed resources for reading and math.
I always send home at least one reading passage because the majority of my students don’t have a library of books at home and many enjoy reading the passages I send home. The passages included in my Winter Reading Comprehension Resource that I send home over winter break have engaging winter themed topics and a variety of genres. I also include a few text dependent printables with the passages.
If you are interested in the academic resources featured in this pack, click here or on the specific links shared above.
Do you send home a winter break packet with your students? If so, is it mostly academic or is it fun printables? Let me know in the comments. I always love hearing what other teachers do in their classroom.
