Hunger is a term that has been defined differently by different people due to its physiological as well as its socio economic aspects. In most cases, the term hunger has been defined in relation to food insecurity. However, according to Holben (n. d. pp. 1), hunger is usually defined as a condition that is painful or uneasy emanating from lack of food.

In the same studies, hunger has yet been defined as persistent and involuntary inability to access food. Therefore, world hunger refers to a condition characterized by want and scarce food in the whole world. Technically, hunger refers to malnutrition a condition that is marked by lack of some, or all the nutrients that are necessary to maintain health of an individual.

There are two types of malnutrition which include micronutrient deficiency and protein energy malnutrition. It is important to note that world hunger generally refers to protein energy malnutrition which is caused by inadequacy of proteins and energy giving food. According to World Hunger education Service (2010 Para. 4), the recent statistics by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) records that there is a total of about nine hundred and twenty five million people in the whole world who are described as hungry.

It is a serious condition since statistics indicate that the number has been on the increase since the mid twentieth center. With that background in mind, this paper shall focus on the problem of world hunger, history, statistics, impacts as well as solutions to the problem.

The problem of hunger has been persistent since early centuries given that people residing in Europe continent used to suffer from serious shortages of food. The problem intensified in the twentieth century due to increase of wars, plagues and other natural disasters like floods, famines and earth quakes. Consequently, a lot of people succumbed to malnutrition and death.

However, during the mid twentieth century and after the Second World War, food production increased by 69% and therefore, there was enough food to feed the population by (National Research Council (U.S.) Committee on Public Engineering Policy, 1975 pp. vii).

The situation of food adequacy which continued from the year 1954-1972 was as a result of various factors which were inclusive but not limited to better methods of farming, land reclamation, use of fertilizers, use of irrigation, as well as use of machines and other forms of skilled labor.

In 1970s, people thought that they could keep the problem of hunger under control by conserving environment, controlling population growth and technological development. Nevertheless, even with such optimism, studies of National Research Council (U.S.).

Committee on Public Engineering Policy (1975 pp. vii), record that by 1974, the condition had already grown out of hand because there was not only a high population growth rate, but energy was also extremely expensive. To make the matter worse, the same study records that a quarter of the total population in the world were already experiencing hunger.

Therefore, due to hunger, agencies which were dealing with the problem started to request for the intervention of the humanitarian relief as well as trying to solve the problem thorough the use of the green revolution. The problem of hunger contributed greatly to the technological development since by all costs, people had to survive. However, although agriculture continued to expand, the population continued to increase and that is why the problem of hunger has persisted throughout the twentieth century to the twenty first century.

As highlighted in the introductory part, nine million people in the world are malnourished but further studies indicate that the exact number is not known. It is important to note that though the problem of hunger is virtually everywhere in the world, most of the hunger stricken people are found in the developing countries.

Despite the fact that the number has been on the increase since 1995, a decrease was observed in last year. The figures below clearly explain the statistical trend of world hunger from 1968 to 2009 (World Hunger Education Service, 2010 Para. 4).

The above figure clearly illustrates that the problem of hunger is most common in the developing countries and less common in the developed countries. According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2010 pp. 2), 19 million are found in developed countries, thirty seven million in North East and North Africa, fifty three in Latin and Caribbean America, two hundred and thirty nine million in Sub Saharan Africa and five hundred and seventy eight in Asia and Pacific Region.

However, it is important to mention that the Food and Agriculture Organization arrives at the above figures by considering the total income of people and the income distribution. Therefore, the figures given are just estimates and that is the main reason why it has become increasingly difficult to get the actual number of hungry people in the whole world.

There are many causes of world hunger but poverty is the main and the same is caused by lack of enough resources as well as unequal distribution of recourses among the populations especially in the developing countries.

According to World Hunger Education Service (2010 Para 10. ), World Bank estimates that there are a bout one million, three hundred and forty five million people who are poor in the whole world since their daily expenditure is 1.25 dollars or even less. Similarly, Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about one billion people in the whole world are under nourished.

As expected, the problem of poverty affects mostly the developing countries although there have been a lot of campaigns which have been launched with an aim of poverty reduction. Consequently in some parts Asia and China, the campaigns have been successful because the number has reduced by 19% (World Hunger Education Service, 2010 para. 12). Conversely, in some parts like the sub-Saharan Africa, the number of poor people has gone up.

Since the study has indicated that poverty is the main cause of hunger, it is important to look at the underlying cause of poverty. According to World Hunger Education Service (2010), the current economic as well as political systems in the world contribute greatly to the problem of hunger and poverty.

The main reason is due to the fact that more often than not, resources are controlled by the economic and political institutions which are controlled by the minority. Therefore, policies which emanate from poor economic systems are contributory factor to poverty and hunger.

Conflict and war is an important cause of not only poverty but also hunger. The main reason is due to the fact that conflicts lead to displacement of people and destruction of property and other resources that can be helpful in alleviating hunger. Towards the end of 2005, the number of refugees was lower compared to the current number influenced by violence and conflicts which have been taking place in Iraq as well as in Somali.

The same study clearly indicates that towards the end of the year 2008, UNHCR had recorded more than ten million refugees. A year after, internally displaced persons in the whole world had reached a total of twenty six million (World Hunger Education Service 2010 par 13). However, although it is difficult to provide the total number of internally displaced people due to conflicts, the truth is, refugees mostly suffer from poverty which exposes them to extreme hunger.

Over the last century, climate has been changing in most parts of the world, a condition which has been caused by global warming. It is a real phenomena and the effects of the same are observed in most parts of the world which are inclusive but not limited to draughts, floods, changing weather and climatic patterns as well as hurricanes (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Economic and Social Dept, 2005).

Such effects of globalization contribute greatly to hunger because they destroy the already cultivated food leading to food shortages.

Changing weather and climate patterns require a change to certain crops which is not only expensive but it also takes long to be implemented. In addition, some plants and animals have become extinct and the same contributes greatly to food shortages and hunger in general. Nonetheless, the most serious consequences of global warming are floods draughts and famines since they lead to poverty which ends up increasing people’s susceptibility to hunger. ( Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2010)

High food prices in both domestic and international markets are also a contributory factor to world hunger. Although the level of poverty is increasing because the level of income has reduced, the price of various food commodities has also gone up and therefore, it has become increasingly difficult for people to afford adequate food for their needs.

According to the studies of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2008 pp. 24), between the year 2002 to 2007, prices of cereals such as wheat maize as well as rice increased by about fifty percent in the world market.

Nonetheless, although the world market food prices were increasing, the rate was different with domestic prices, a condition caused by the depreciating value of the US dollar while compared to other currencies in the world. However, in the year 2007 and 2008, domestic food prices in most countries also ended up increasing.

High prices in the domestic market are caused by high prices for agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. As highlighted earlier, the need for use of advanced agricultural inputs results from the effects of global warming which is also a chief cause of world hunger and food insecurity.

There are many impacts of world hunger because food is a basic need for everyone in the society. Although impacts of hunger affect people across all the age brackets, young children are usually the worst victims. In science, the condition caused by hunger and starvation is known as under nutrition. It increases the disease burden such that in one year; under nourished children suffer from illnesses for at least five months as the condition lowers their immunity.

In most cases, undernourishment is the underlying cause of various diseases that affect children like malaria, measles, diarrhea and pneumonia. Studies of World Hunger Education Service (2010 par. 10) indicate that malnutrition is the underlying cause of more than half of all the cases of malaria diarrhea and pneumonia in young children. In measles, the same studies indicate that forty five percent of all the cases result from malnutrition.

As the problem of hunger, malnutrition is unequally distributed in the world because about thirty two percent of the stunted children live in the developing countries. Seventy percent of the total number of the malnourished children is found in Asia while Africa hosts 26% and the remaining four percent are from Caribbean and Latin America (World Hunger Education Service, 2010 par 11).

The study points out that the problem starts even before birth because in most cases, pregnant mothers are also usually undernourished. Due to this problem, in every six infants, one is usually undernourished. Apart from death, under nourishment resulting from hunger also causes blindness, difficulties in learning, stunted growth, retardation and poor health, to name just a few.

Apart from disease, poverty is also a resultant factor of hunger. In reference to the definition of hunger as an uncomfortable condition resulting from lack of food, hungry people are usually incapacitated. Since food is an important source of energy, people suffering from hunger are usually not in a position to take part in useful economic activities and a result, they are usually poor.

In addition, hunger is one of the reasons that cause people to migrate from one place to another there by causing economic constraints to the host countries. Conflicts also emanate from the same as people compete for scarce resources. A lot of humanitarian agencies use most of their funds in proving food to the people suffering from hunger either in refugee camps or in other places.

As a result, governments spend a lot of money in providing humanitarian support while the same amount of money could have been used in development projects. Impacts of hunger are mostly felt in the developing countries, Asia and Sub Saharan Africa because in most cases, the problem of hunger in such regions is usually an international problem because regional governments cannot be able to deal with it single handedly ( World Vision, 2010).

Hunger being a serious problem requires no emphasis and therefore, there are some responses which are meant to mitigate the problem. Various policies have therefore been established in all related areas. For example, there are various policies that that have been established to regulate high food prices. Such measures are inclusive but not limited to tax on imports, restricting export to maintain adequate food in the country, measures to control prices of food as well as to enhance food affordability, and stabilizing prices.

Improving and increasing agricultural produce is an important measure that has been taking place especially in the developing countries meant to increase supply and eventually curb the problem of hunger. At this point, is important to note that the number of response which have be taken to reduce or eliminate the problem of hunger vary from one region to another.

In addition, every region implements the policies that can be useful in that particular region. According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2010 pp.32 ), a survey conducted in the year 2007 and 2008 indicated that about 50% of all the countries reduced the tax of imports on cereals and more than fifty percent adopted measures like consumer subsidies with an aim of lowering domestic food prices.

Twenty five percent of the countries imposed restrictions on exports to minimize the outflow of food and the remaining 16% had done nothing to solve the problem of high domestic food prices. It is quite unfortunate that the regions that are mostly affected by hunger like Sub Saharan Africa; Caribbean as well Latin America has established the lowest number of policies.

Although such policies are of great help locally, they have negative impacts in the international markets. For example, due to restriction on exports, the supply of food at the international markets is usually low and as a result, the prices end up increasing. Apart from that, subsidies on imports increase government expenditure thereby straining the budget.

Therefore, it is clear that some measures of price do not control neither they end up mitigating the problem since they affect other people like farmers and traders. The main cause of the problem is due to the fact that most governments are unable to protect their economy from external influences.

While looking for the solutions to the problem, it is important to note that the demand of food will continue to increase due to various factors like urban growth and development as well as the high level of income. In that case, there is a great need for increasing food production.

In addition, the intervention should aim at not only solving the current problem but also solving any shortage that may emerge in future. Therefore, all regions and especially the sub-Saharan Africa ought to focus on increasing agricultural production. Moreover, it is necessary to come up with appropriate policies to ensure that the increase in food production will solve the problem of food insecurity (National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Public Engineering Policy, 1975).

One of the problems that have been causing hunger especially in developing countries is inaccessibility to adequate food. As a result, the concerned stakeholders should look for ways and means of increasing food accessibility. For instance; it would be more helpful if the production of small scale farmers could increase because the problem cannot only help in lowering food prices in the global market but also in alleviating poverty and hunger in the rural areas.

Although incentives and agricultural inputs are important in increasing agricultural production in the rural areas, some other measures can still be used in the same areas. For instance, in a region like Africa, more areas can be irrigated and by so doing, agricultural production can increase as well ( Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2010).

World hunger is a real and a serious problem not only due to its grave impacts but also due to the complexity of the whole issue. A lot of people in the whole world are exposed to hunger. A critical analysis of the problem illustrates that it not only results from low food production but it is also affected by other factors such as inaccessibility of food, high food prices and some policies established by the government.

For example, the research has indicated that some polices that control the prices of food in local markets end up increasing food prices in the global market. In the view of the fact that hunger is the underlying cause of poverty, disease and eventually death, it is important for the concerned stake holders to address the issue accordingly.

As the studies of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, (2008, p. 2) indicate, the over nine million hunger stricken people can be saved only if the stake holders that are inclusive of the government, United Nations, civil societies, donors and humanitarian agencies, general public and the private sector can join hands in combating the problem.

In order to come up with lasting solutions, their efforts should be aimed at improving the agricultural sector and establishing safety nets to protect the vulnerable population. Finally, in every challenge, there is an opportunity and in that case, the high prices of food can be used as an opportunity by small scale producers to increase their produce and get more returns and thereby reduce problems like poverty which contribute to hunger. Therefore, even though the problem is complicated, viable solutions still exist.

गरीबी के कारण

गरीबी का सबसे बड़ा कारण परिस्थिति नहीं बल्कि लोगों की गरीब सोच है। शिक्षा का अभाव, रोजगार का अभाव, अपंगता आदि गरीबी के अन्य कारण है।गरीबी एक ऐसी बीमारी है जो इंसान को हर तरीके से परेशान करती है। इसके कारण एक व्यक्ति का अच्छा जीवन, शारीरिक स्वास्थ्य, शिक्षा स्तर आदि जैसी सारी चीजें खराब हो जाती है। यही कारण है कि आज के समय में गरीबी को एक भयावह समस्या माना जाता है।

गरीबी से मुक्ति के उपाय

ये बहुत जरुरी है कि एक सामान्य जीवन जीने के लिये, उचित शारीरिक और मानसिक स्वास्थ्य, पूर्ण शिक्षा, हरेक के लिये घर, और दूसरी जरुरी चीजों को लाने के लिये देश और पूरे विश्व को साथ मिलकर कार्य करना होगा। गरीबी के अंत के लिए हम सभी को मिलकर प्रयास करना होगा।  सरकार को अवसर उपलब्ध कराना चाहिए और जनता को उस अवसर का लाभ उठाना चाहिए।

निष्कर्ष गरीबी से मुक्ति के लिए हमें शिक्षा और कौशल युक्त होना होगा। सरकार का यह दायित्व है की वह जनता को अवसर और योजनाए प्रदान करे , जिससे एक आम आदमी भी रोजगार प्राप्त कर सके।

आज के समय में गरीबी को दुनियां के सबसे बडी समस्याओं में से एक माना जाता है। गरीबी एक ऐसी मानवीय स्थिति है, जो हमारे जीवन में दुख-दर्द तथा निराशा जैसी विभिन्न समस्याओँ को जन्म देती है। गरीबी में जीवन जीने वाले व्यक्तियों को ना तो अच्छी शिक्षा की प्राप्ति होती है ना ही उन्हें अच्छी सेहत मिलती है।

गरीबी एक त्रासदी

गरीबी एक ऐसी मानवीय परिस्थिति है जो हमारे जीवन में निराशा, दुख और दर्द लाती है। गरीबी पैसे की कमी है और जीवन को उचित तरीके से जीने के लिये सभी चीजों के कमी को प्रदर्शित करता है। गरीबी एक बच्चे को बचपन में स्कूल में दाखिला लेने में अक्षम बनाती है और वो एक दुखी परिवार में अपना बचपन बिताने या जीने को मजबूर होते हैं। निर्धनता और पैसों की कमी की वजह से लोग दो वक्त की रोटी, बच्चों के लिये किताबें नहीं जुटा पाने और बच्चों का सही तरीके से पालन-पोषण नहीं कर पाने के जैसी समस्याओं से ग्रस्त हो जाते है।

हमलोग गरीबी को बहुत तरीके से परिभाषित कर सकते हैं। भारत में गरीबी देखना बहुत आम-सा हो गया है क्योंकि ज्यादातर लोग अपने जीवन की मूलभूत आवश्यकताओं को भी नहीं पूरा कर सकते हैं। यहाँ पर जनसंख्या का एक विशाल भाग निरक्षर, भूखे और बिना कपड़ों और घर के जीने को मजबूर हैं। भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था के कमजोर होने का यही मुख्य कारण है। निर्धनता के कारण लगभग भारत में आधी आबादी दर्द भरा जीवन जी रही है।

गरीबी एक स्थिति उत्पन्न करती है जिसमें लोग पर्याप्त आय प्राप्त करने में असफल हो जाते हैं इसलिये वो जरुरी चीजों को नहीं खरीद पाते हैं। एक निर्धन व्यक्ति अपने जीवन में मूल वस्तुओं के अधिकार के बिना जीता है जैसे दो वक्त का भोजन, स्व्च्छ जल, घर, कपड़े, उचित शिक्षा आदि। ये लोग जीने के न्यूनतम स्तर को भी बनाए रखने में विफल हो जाते हैं जैसे अस्तित्व के लिये जरुरी उपभोग और पोषण आदि।

भारत में निर्धनता के कई कारण हैं हालांकि राष्ट्रीय आय का गलत वितरण भी एक कारण है। कम आय वर्ग समूह के लोग उच्च आय वर्ग समूह के लोगों से बहुत ज्यादा गरीब होते हैं। गरीब परिवार के बच्चों को उचित शिक्षा, पोषण और खुशनुमा बचपन का माहौल कभी नसीब नहीं हो पाता है। निर्धनता का मुख्य कारण, अशिक्षा, भ्रष्टाचार, बढ़ती जनसंख्या, कमजोर कृषि, अमीरी और गरीबी के बीच बढ़ती खाई आदि है।

गरीबी मानव जीवन की वह समस्या है, जिसके कारण इससे ग्रसित व्यक्ति को अपने जीवन में मूलभूत सुविधाएं भी नही मिल पाती है। यही कारण है कि वर्तमान समय में गरीबी से निवारण के कई उपाय ढ़ूढे जा रहे है, ताकि विश्व भर के लोगों के जीवन स्तर को सुधारा जा सके।

गरीबी को नियंत्रित करने के उपाय

निर्धनता जीवन की खराब गुणवत्ता, अशिक्षा, कुपोषण, मूलभूत आवयश्यकताओं की कमी, निम्न मानव संसाधन विकास आदि को प्रदर्शित करता है। भारत में जैसे विकासशील देशों में निर्धनता एक प्रमुख समस्या है। ये एक ऐसा तथ्य है जिसमें समाज में एक वर्ग के लोग अपने जीवन की मूलभूत जरुरतों को भी पूरा नहीं कर सकते हैं।

पिछले पाँच वर्षों में गरीबी के स्तर में कुछ कमी दिखाई दी है (1993-94 में 35.97% से 1999-2000 में 26.1%)। ये राज्य स्तर पर भी घटा है जैसे उड़ीसा में 47.15% से 48.56%, मध्य प्रदेश में 37.43% से 43.52%, उत्तर प्रदेश में 31.15% से 40.85% और पश्चिम बंगाल में 27.02% से 35.66% तक। हालांकि इसके बावजूद इस बात पर कोई विशेष खुशी या गर्व नही महसूस किया जा सकता है क्योंकि अभी भी भारत में लगभग 26 करोड़ लोग गरीबी रेखा के नीचे जीवन व्यतीत करने को मजबूर है।

भारत में गरीबी कुछ प्रभावकारी कार्यक्रमों के प्रयोगों के द्वारा मिटायी जा सकती है, हालांकि इस उद्देश्य की प्राप्ति के लिये केवल सरकार के द्वारा ही नहीं बल्कि सभी के समन्वित प्रयास की जरुरत है। खासतौर से ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में प्राथमिक शिक्षा, जनसंख्या नियंत्रण, परिवार कल्याण, रोज़गार सृजन आदि जैसे मुख्य संघटकों के द्वारा गरीब सामाजिक क्षेत्रों को विकसित करने के लिये भारत सरकार को कुछ असरकारी रणनीतियों को बनाना होगा।

गरीबी का क्या प्रभाव है?

गरीबी के ये कुछ निम्न प्रभाव हैं जैसे:

• निरक्षरता: पैसों की कमी के चलते उचित शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के लिये गरीबी लोगों को अक्षम बना देती है।
• पोषण और संतुलित आहार: गरीबी के कारण संतुलित आहार और पर्याप्त पोषण की अपर्याप्त उपलब्धता ढ़ेर सारी खततरनाक और संक्रामक बीमारियाँ लेकर आती है।
• बाल श्रम: ये बड़े स्तर पर अशिक्षा को जन्म देता है क्योंकि देश का भविष्य बहुत कम उम्र में ही बहुत ही कम कीमत पर बाल श्रम में शामिल हो जाता है।
• बेरोज़गारी: गरीबी के वजह से बेरोजगारी भी उत्पन्न होती है, जोकि लोगो के सामान्य जीवन को प्रभावित करने का कार्य करता है। ये लोगों को अपनी इच्छा के विपरीत जीवन जीने को मजबूर करता है।
• सामाजिक चिंता: अमीर और गरीब के बीच आय के भयंकर अंतर के कारण ये सामाजिक चिंता उत्पन्न करता है।
• आवास की समस्या: फुटपाथ, सड़क के किनारे, दूसरी खुली जगहें, एक कमरे में एक-साथ कई लोगों का रहना आदि जीने के लिये ये बुरी परिस्थिति उत्पन्न करता है।
• बीमारियां: विभिन्न संक्रामक बीमारियों को ये बढ़ाता है क्योंकि बिना पैसे के लोग उचित स्वच्छता और सफाई को बनाए नहीं रख सकते हैं। किसी भी बीमारी के उचित इलाज के लिये डॉक्टर के खर्च को भी वहन नहीं कर सकते हैं।
• स्त्री संपन्नता में निर्धनता: लौंगिक असमानता के कारण महिलाओं के जीवन को बड़े स्तर पर प्रभावित करती है और वो उचित आहार, पोषण और दवा तथा उपचार सुविधा से वंचित रहती है।

समाज में भ्रष्टाचार, अशिक्षा तथा भेदभाव जैसी ऐसी समस्याएं है, जो आज के समय में विश्व भर को प्रभावित कर रही है। इस देखते हुए हमें इन कारणों की पहचान करनी होगी और इनसे निपटने की रणनीती बनाते हुए समाज के विकास को सुनिश्चित करना होगा क्योंकि गरीबी का उन्मूलन मात्र समग्र विकास के द्वारा ही संभव है।

निबंध 4 (600 शब्द)

निर्धनता एक परिस्थिति है जिसमें लोग जीवन के आधारभूत जरुरतों जैसे कि अपर्याप्त भोजन, कपड़े और छत आदि को भी नही प्राप्त कर पाते है। भारत में ज्यादातर लोग ठीक ढंग से दो वक्त की रोटी नही हासिल कर सकते, वो सड़क किनारे सोते हैं और गंदे कपड़े पहनते हैं। वो उचित स्वस्थ पोषण, दवा और दूसरी जरुरी चीजें नहीं पाते हैं। शहरी जनसंख्या में बढ़ोत्तरी के कारण शहरी भारत में गरीबी बढ़ी है क्योंकि नौकरी और धन संबंधी क्रियाओं के लिये ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों से लोग शहरों और नगरों की ओर पलायन कर रहें है। लगभग 8 करोड़ लोगों की आय गरीबी रेखा से नीचे है और 4.5 करोड़ शहरी लोग सीमारेखा पर हैं। झुग्गी-झोपड़ियों में रहने वाले अधिकतर लोग अशिक्षित होते हैं। कुछ कदमों के उठाये जाने के बावजूद गरीबी को घटाने के संदर्भ में कोई भी संतोषजनक परिणाम नहीं दिखाई देता है।

गरीबी के कारण एवं निवारण

भारत में गरीबी का मुख्य कारण बढ़ती जनसंख्या, कमजोर कृषि, भ्रष्टाचार, पुरानी प्रथाएं, अमीर और गरीब के बीच में बड़ी खाई, बेरोज़गारी, अशिक्षा, संक्रामक रोग आदि है। भारत में जनसंख्या का एक बड़ा भाग कृषि पर निर्भर करता है जो कि गरीब है और गरीबी का कारण है। आमतौर पर खराब कृषि और बेरोज़गारी की वजह से लोगों को भोजन की कमी से जूझना पड़ता है। भारत में बढ़ती जनसंख्या भी गरीबी का कारण है। अधिक जनसंख्या मतलब अधिक भोजन, पैसा और घर की जरुरत। मूल सुविधाओं की कमी में, गरीबी ने तेजी से अपने पाँव पसारे हैं। अत्यधिक अमीर और भयंकर गरीब ने अमीर और गरीब के बीच की खाई को बहुत चौड़ा कर दिया है।

गरीबी का प्रभाव

गरीबी लोगों को कई तरह से प्रभावित करती है। गरीबी के कई प्रभाव हैं जैसे अशिक्षा, असुरक्षित आहार और पोषण, बाल श्रम, खराब घर, गुणवत्ताहीन जीवनशैली, बेरोजगारी, खराब साफ-सफाई, पुरुषों की तुलना में महिलाओं में गरीबी की अधिकता, आदि। पैसों की कमी की वजह से अमीर और गरीब के बीच खाई बढ़ती ही जा रही है। ये अंतर ही किसी देश को अविकसित की श्रेणी की ओर ले जाता है। गरीबी की वजह से ही कोई छोटा बच्चा अपने परिवार की आर्थिक मदद के लिये स्कूल जाने के बजाय कम मजदूरी पर काम करने को मजबूर हो जाता है।

गरीबी को जड़ से हटाने का समाधान

इस ग्रह पर मानवता की अच्छाई के लिये त्वरित आधार पर गरीबी की समस्या को सुलझाने के लिये ये बहुत जरुरी है। कुछ समाधान जो गरीबी की समस्या को सुलझाने में बड़ी भूमिका अदा कर सकते हैं वो इस प्रकार है:

• फायदेमंद बनाने के साथ ही अच्छी खेती के लिये किसानों को उचित और जरुरी सुविधा मिलनी चाहिये।
• बालिग लोग जो अशिक्षित हैं को जीवन की बेहतरी के लिये जरुरी प्रशिक्षण दिया जाना चाहिये।
• हमेशा बढ़ रही जनसंख्या और इसी तरह से गरीबी को जाँचने के लिये लोगों के द्वारा परिवार नियोजन का अनुसरण करना चाहिये।
• गरीबी को मिटाने के लिये पूरी दुनिया से भ्रष्टाचार का खात्मा करना चाहिये।
• हरेक बच्चों को स्कूल जाना चाहिये और पूरी शिक्षा प्राप्त करनी चाहिये।
• रोजगार के रास्ते होने चाहिये जहाँ सभी वर्गों के लोग एक साथ कार्य कर सकें।

गरीबी केवल एक इंसान की समस्या नहीं है बल्कि ये राष्ट्रीय समस्या है। इसे त्वरित आधार पर कुछ प्रभावी तरीकों को लागू करके सुलझाना चाहिये। सरकार द्वारा निर्धनता को हटाने के लिये विभिन्न प्रकार के कदम उठाये गये हालांकि कोई भी स्पष्ट परिणाम दिखाई नहीं देता। लोग, अर्थव्यवस्था, समाज और देश के चिरस्थायी और समावेशी वृद्धि के लिये गरीबी का उन्मूलन बहुत जरुरी है। गरीबी को जड़ से उखाड़ने के लिये हरेक व्यक्ति का एक-जुट होना बहुत आवश्यक है।

भारत में जिस प्रकार आबादी बढ़ती जा रही है उसके साथ साथ बहुत जगह गरीबी भी बढ़ती जा रही है। प्रदेश में गरीबी पढ़ना देश के विकास में बाधा साबित हो रही है। और दूसरे देशों के मुताबिक भारत में गरीबी बहुत ज्यादा है। गरीबी जीवन की एक भयावह समस्या है, इस समस्या को दूर करने के लिए विश्व भर में कई सारे प्रयास किए गए है परंतु ये समस्या दूर नहीं हो रही है। आज भी हम रास्ते में निकले तो ऐसे कई सारे गरीब हमें दिख ही जाते है जो  अपना जीवन सड़क पर व्यतीत कर रहे हो । गरीबी बहुत ही गंभीर परिस्थिति है जो कि एक व्यक्ति और उसके पूरे परिवार का भविष्य खराब कर के रख देती है। गंभीरता से देखे तो गरीबी लोगो को अंदर से खोखला बना कर रख देती है जीवन चर्या को जीने का कोई सहारा ही नहीं बचता, फिर भी वह जैसे तैसे अपना दिन काट ही लेते है। दिन ब दिन जिस प्रकार अमीर व्यक्ति अपने स्वार्थ से सिर्फ अपना विकाश कर रहा है, वही देश में गरीबी विलुप्त होने का नाम नहीं ले रही। गरीबी एक बहुत बड़ी समस्या बनकर देश के सामने खड़ी है।

गरीबी क्या है?

भारत देश में लोगो की गरीबी एक ऐसी परिस्थिति है जिसमें उन्हें उनकी जरूरतों का सामान भी प्राप्त नहीं हो पाता। रहने के लिए छत तो दूर की बात है उन्हें दो वक़्त की रोटी भी नसीब नहीं होती । गरीबी में व्यक्ति हर चीज़ से वंचित हो जाता है, जिस उम्र में बच्चे को शिक्षा प्राप्त होनी चाहिए उस उम्र में वह घर-घर भटक के दो वक़्त के खाने का इंतजाम करते रहते है, क्युकी जीवन में कुछ मिले या ना मिले खाने कि भूख तो अमीर और गरीब दोनों को ही होती है। गरीबी लोगो को मानसिक और शारीरिक दोनों रुपो से अधूरा छोड़ देती है, दवाई और टीका जो सभी के स्वस्थ के लिए समय पर लेना जरूरी होता है वो उन्हें नहीं मिल पता और उन्हें गरीबी के साथ साथ कई सारे बीमारियों का सामना करना पड़ता है। इस निर्धनता में अगर व्यक्ति को एक दिन पेट भर के खाना मिल जाए तो उसे वो बहुत बड़ी खुश नसीबी समझते है। रहने के लिए छत ना होने के कारण उन्हें फुटपाथ में ही सोना पड़ता है। फुटपाथ पर सोना उन व्यक्तियों के लिए घातक भी साबित हो जाती है क्युकी मेन रोड से आने जाने वाली गाड़ियों का संतुलन बिगड़ने से गरीबी की जान भी चली जाती है। यह समस्या  दिन प्रतिदिन बढ़ती ही जा रही है और देश की आर्थिक व्यवस्था में हानि का कारण बनती जा रही है।

गरीबी बढ़ने के कारण:-

भारत में गरीबी बढ़ने के कई सरे कारण है। इन्हीं कारणों से गरीबी बढ़ती जा रही है और रुकने का नाम नहीं ले रही। गरीबी बढ़ने के बहुत से कारण है जैसे –

• भारत की जनसंख्या का दिन प्रतिदिन बढ़ना भी गरीबी का कारण बन गया है। हर व्यक्ति को अपना जीवन व्यतीत करने के लिए नौकरी या काम की जरूरत पड़ती है।  भारत देश में जनसंख्या के कारण सभी की नौकरी नहीं मिल पाती और नौकरी ना मिलने के कारण गरीबी बढ़ने लगती है।
• देश की आर्थिक स्थिति खराब होने से भी गरीबी बढ़ जाती है। पैसे की कमी होना गरीबों में अनिवार्य सा होगया है।
•  दैनिक जीवन को व्यतीत करने के लिए जरूरतों का पूरा नहीं होना जैसे भोजन पानी , कपड़ा ,दवाइयां और मकान इस सब की कमी के कारण भी गरीबी कई हद तक बढ़ जाती है।
• भारत देश में कृषि का बहुत महत्व है परंतु किसानों की आर्थिक व्यवस्था खराब होने के कारण उनका काम रुक जाता है। वैसे तो किसानों की जिंदगी बहुत ही साधारण होती है सिर्फ खाने के लिए खाना मिल गया वही बहुत है। परंतु कृषि का काम रुक जाने से उनके पास कोई काम नहीं बचता और उनकी स्थिति गरीबी में बदलने लगती है।
• लोगों का शिक्षित होना भी गरीबी का एक कारण बन गया है। शिक्षा से ही काम मिलता है हर क्षेत्र में शिक्षा का महत्व है परंतु जिन व्यक्तियों को शिक्षा प्राप्त नहीं होती उन्हें काम नहीं मिलता  और इस कारण उन्हें गरीबी का सामना करना पड़ता है।

भारत में गरीबी को खत्म कैसे किया जाए :-

भारत में गरीबी जिस प्रकार बढ़ती जा रही है उसे देखते हुए इसे खत्म करने का उपाय भी हमें सोचना पड़ेगा। गरीबी को खत्म करने के कई सारे उपाय हैं जैसे –

• भारत में जनसंख्या को नियंत्रण करने से भी गरीबी काम होगी। जनसंख्या को नेतृत्व विकास के लिए जो लोग बढ़ावा देते हैं उन सब पर रोक लगाया जाए ।
• भारत देश में रोजगार के अवसर को बढ़ाने से हर व्यक्ति को रोजगार मिल सकेगा और उससे गरीबी कम होगी और देश की आर्थिक व्यवस्था पर भी सुधारों होगा ।
• विदेशी लोगों को आमंत्रित करने से भी देश का आर्थिक स्थिति सुधरेगी पर यहां रोजगार के अवसर बढ़ेंगे, दूसरे देशों के साथ रोजगार करने में देश का भी फायदा होगा।
• गरीबों के लिए नई नई स्कीम निकालकर राज्यों के साथ मिलकर गरीबों को रियासत देना चाहिए।भ्रष्टाचार और राजनीति को गरीबों से दूर रख कर उन पर अधिक ध्यान देना चाहिए।
• भारत की अर्थव्यवस्था को सुधारने के लिए कम से कम रुपए में खाद्य पदर्थों गरीबों के लिए होनी चाहिए जिससे उन्हें दो वक्त की रोटी में सके और वह अपना काम बहुत ही अच्छे से करें और उन्हें रोजगार प्राप्त हो ।
• सिर्फ मध्यम और उच्च वर्ग को ना देखते हुए गरीबों की भी मदद की जानी चाहिए। जिसे देश की गरीबी मिटेगी और हर किसी के पास खाने के लिए दो वक्त की रोटी मिल सकेगी।

गरीबी एक बहुत बड़ी समस्या है जिसका सामना नीचे वर्ग वाले लोगों को बहुत करना पड़ता है। गरीबी के कारण लोगों की अर्थव्यवस्था बहुत ही बिगड़ जाती है उन्हें दो वक्त का खाना नहीं मिलता किसी तरीके से आधे पेट उन्हें सो जाना पड़ता है, पहनने के लिए कपड़े नहीं रहते एक कपड़े में ही वह अपनी पूरी जिंदगी गुजार लेते हैं, रहने के लिए छतरी होते हैं आधा जीवन तो वह सड़क पर ही गुजार देते हैं, उन्हें सही समय पर शिक्षा प्राप्त नहीं हो पाती जिसके कारण रोजगार भी उन्हें नहीं मिल पाता। राजनीति तौर पे गरीबों को दूर करने के लिए नेताओं को आगे आना पड़ेगा तब जाकर गरीबी को खत्म किया जा सकता है। भारत देश में जनसंख्या बढ़ने के कारण गरीबी की भी  ऊंचे स्तर में वृद्धि होती जा रही है।

Good morning everyone!

I am mesmerized to have such a lovely audience at this hour of the day. I am (XYZ) and today I am here to present my thoughts on “World Food Day” which we celebrate every year on the 16th of October.

Hunger! What is hunger? a dietary need integral to human survival, an instinct that causes the rise and fall of the entire mankind. The food chain is the best example that highlights the importance of energy generation, and transformation among species and plants. In psychological terms, the main goal of living among every creature from microbes to homo-sapiens is food security. History of evolution has witnessed this necessity of food and space among species which led to the occupancy of the entire biosphere. Therefore hunting was one of the primitive activities observed in omnivorous or carnivorous animals.

Food scarcity is the most pathetic consequence of a crisis such as war, natural phenomenon, or disaster. Lack of food sufficiency and malnutrition are two vital issues faced by governments of both developed and developing countries. 

Every year around 828 million people suffer from malnutrition. Among these 149 million are children below the age group of 5. Almost 45 million children are estimated to be wasted and 38.9 million are obese. Nearly 45% of deaths of children are caused due to undernutrition. Logically food gears the economy in two-fold ways, firstly it owes a commercial value as a product, and secondly, without its consumption, no human would be left with any strength to work for a running household. This is how food and health go hand in hand and builds a plethora of socio-economic development.

The stagnant economy at both micro and macro level is the devastating influence of the pandemic in the past two years. Price inflation had a generous contribution in building the gaps between haves and have-nots. Change in the climatic pattern due to global warming has further affected the figures for food production in different seasons. Inconsistency in food accessibility and availability are two immediate effects of ecological imbalance. According to the global context, approximately 16% of interruption is observed in crop production due to sudden changes in climatic temperature. Rather than climate, technology, and the transformation of agricultural land into industrial property are other two factors influencing food security.

Population size is also soaring upward that not only creates irresistible demand for food but also gearing technological innovations. In return, the natural conditions for plantations, cultivation, and animal husbandry are getting severely hampered. Extinction of flora and fauna along with poor life expectancy are some precarious outcomes of the exploitation of resources and technology.

Some statistical analysis suggests that 99% of undernourished people reside in developing countries, while 60% of women in the world suffer from hunger. Over 20 million infants are born underweight due to malnutrition during pregnancy in the mother. The majority of deaths among babies are caused due to imbalance of diet or ravenousness in the mother.

In this circumstance, I feel that “Leave no one behind” is the perfect theme for “World Food Day 2022”. No individual should sleep empty stomach is the vital goal of “World Food Day”. Sustainability is an eminent approach to reducing human suffering from food shortages. Leaving a single individual behind tends to break the natural chain of equivalence. Proper climate, environmental security, food production management, improvement of nutritional value, and an effective lifestyle together can lead to setting up sustainable holistic changes.

The “World Food Day 2022” believes in taking actionable measures together to secure the world from the food crisis. Food, peace, nutrition, and equality are basic rights of people which can be restored by the collective operation of “government, private sectors, civil society, and individuals”. Thematic analysis of “World Food Day” focuses on eradicating hunger, malnutrition, and food unavailability by the end of 2030.

Food resembles diversity and cultural heterogeneity beyond geopolitical boundaries. It symbolizes a sense of unity, tradition, and uniqueness of taste and choices. Thus, let’s come together to preserve and protect the delight of living.

भूख! भूख क्या है? एक आहार आवश्यकता मानव अस्तित्व के लिए अभिन्न अंग है, एक वृत्ति जो संपूर्ण मानव जाति के उत्थान और पतन का कारण बनती है। खाद्य श्रृंखला सबसे अच्छा उदाहरण है जो ऊर्जा उत्पादन और प्रजातियों और पौधों के बीच परिवर्तन के महत्व पर प्रकाश डालती है। मनोवैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से सूक्ष्म जीवों से लेकर होमोसेपियन्स तक हर प्राणी के बीच रहने का मुख्य लक्ष्य खाद्य सुरक्षा है। विकास के इतिहास ने प्रजातियों के बीच भोजन और स्थान की इस आवश्यकता को देखा है जिसके कारण पूरे जीवमंडल का कब्जा हो गया। इसलिए शिकार सर्वाहारी या मांसाहारी जानवरों में देखी जाने वाली आदिम गतिविधियों में से एक था।

भोजन की कमी युद्ध, प्राकृतिक घटना या आपदा जैसे संकट का सबसे दयनीय परिणाम है। विकसित और विकासशील दोनों देशों की सरकारों के सामने खाद्य पर्याप्तता और कुपोषण दो महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दे हैं।

गरीबी के कारण ही बच्चों को अपनी उच्च शिक्षा से वंचित रहना पड़ता है। साथ ही गरीबी का प्रभाव लोगों के स्वास्थ्य पर भी पड़ता है जब वे अच्छा पौष्टिक भोजन नहीं कर पाते हैं। इससे बच्चों में कुपोषण देखा गया है।

In the worst conditions you can imagine — after hurricanes, earthquakes, bombs and gunfire — the best of humanity shows up. Not once or twice but always.

The seven people killed on a World Central Kitchen mission in Gaza on Monday were the best of humanity. They are not faceless or nameless. They are not generic aid workers or collateral damage in war.

Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, John Chapman, Jacob Flickinger, Zomi Frankcom, James Henderson, James Kirby and Damian Sobol risked everything for the most fundamentally human activity: to share our food with others.

These are people I served alongside in Ukraine, Turkey, Morocco, the Bahamas, Indonesia, Mexico, Gaza and Israel. They were far more than heroes.

Their work was based on the simple belief that food is a universal human right. It is not conditional on being good or bad, rich or poor, left or right. We do not ask what religion you belong to. We just ask how many meals you need.

From Day 1, we have fed Israelis as well as Palestinians. Across Israel, we have served more than 1.75 million hot meals. We have fed families displaced by Hezbollah rockets in the north. We have fed grieving families from the south. We delivered meals to the hospitals where hostages were reunited with their families. We have called consistently, repeatedly and passionately for the release of all the hostages.

All the while, we have communicated extensively with Israeli military and civilian officials. At the same time, we have worked closely with community leaders in Gaza, as well as Arab nations in the region. There is no way to bring a ship full of food to Gaza without doing so.

That’s how we served more than 43 million meals in Gaza, preparing hot food in 68 community kitchens where Palestinians are feeding Palestinians.

We know Israelis. Israelis, in their heart of hearts, know that food is not a weapon of war.

Israel is better than the way this war is being waged. It is better than blocking food and medicine to civilians. It is better than killing aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israel Defense Forces.

The Israeli government needs to open more land routes for food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today.

In the worst conditions, after the worst terrorist attack in its history, it’s time for the best of Israel to show up. You cannot save the hostages by bombing every building in Gaza. You cannot win this war by starving an entire population.

We welcome the government’s promise of an investigation into how and why members of our World Central Kitchen family were killed. That investigation needs to start at the top, not just the bottom.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said of the Israeli killings of our team, “It happens in war.” It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the Israel Defense Forces.

It was also the direct result of a policy that squeezed humanitarian aid to desperate levels. Our team was en route from a delivery of almost 400 tons of aid by sea — our second shipment, funded by the United Arab Emirates, supported by Cyprus and with clearance from the Israel Defense Forces.

The team members put their lives at risk precisely because this food aid is so rare and desperately needed. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification global initiative, half the population of Gaza — 1.1. million people — faces the imminent risk of famine. The team would not have made the journey if there were enough food, traveling by truck across land, to feed the people of Gaza.

The peoples of the Mediterranean and Middle East, regardless of ethnicity and religion, share a culture that values food as a powerful statement of humanity and hospitality — of our shared hope for a better tomorrow.

There’s a reason, at this special time of year, Christians make Easter eggs, Muslims eat an egg at iftar dinners and an egg sits on the Seder plate. This symbol of life and hope reborn in spring extends across religions and cultures.

I have been a stranger at Seder dinners. I have heard the ancient Passover stories about being a stranger in the land of Egypt, the commandment to remember — with a feast before you — that the children of Israel were once slaves.

It is not a sign of weakness to feed strangers; it is a sign of strength. The people of Israel need to remember, at this darkest hour, what strength truly looks like.

World hunger is a problem that has existed for centuries. Despite the efforts of many organizations and individuals, the number of people who are hungry or at risk of hunger continues to rise. According to the World Food Programme, there are about 795 million people who are chronically undernourished, which means that they do not have enough food to lead a healthy and active life.

The causes of world hunger are complex and multi-faceted, but there are some common underlying factors. One of the main causes is poverty. People living in poverty do not have the money to buy food, or they may not have access to land where they can grow their own food. Another major cause of world hunger is conflict. When countries are in conflict, it disrupts the distribution of food and can lead to widespread famine. Natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, can also cause food shortages.

There are many ways to address world hunger. One way is to provide emergency food assistance to people who are affected by natural disasters or conflicts. Another way is to work on long-term solutions such as economic development and agricultural reform.

World hunger is a complex problem that requires a multi-faceted approach to be effectively addressed. However, with concerted effort and cooperation, it is possible to make progress in the fight against hunger.

As I speak these words to you, a youngster somewhere on this planet will have perished from starvation. A child. Children are the most vulnerable of us: they trust everyone instinctively, and their purity is genuine and appropriate and necessary–and they’re dying in far-flung regions of the globe until their skin stretches over their bones and they don’t have the strength, desire, or capacity to cry out anymore. You may feel for them with compassion or guilt or simply an understanding of their condition.

They become a statistic, one more number in the millions that die each year from something as preventable and solvable as hunger.

World hunger is one of the biggest problems faced by the human race. It’s not just a problem in developing countries, either. In our own country, the United States of America, there are children going to bed hungry every night. Just think about that for a moment. In the richest country in the world, with more resources than any other nation, there are still children who don’t have enough to eat. That’s shameful.

The problem of world hunger is complex and multi-faceted. There are many factors that contribute to it: war, natural disasters, poverty, poor infrastructure and access to resources, and more. But the bottom line is that there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. So why are people still going hungry?

There are a number of organizations working to solve the problem of world hunger. One of them is World Food Programme (WFP). The WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, working to end hunger worldwide. They provide food assistance in emergencies and help communities develop long-term solutions to hunger.

You can help fight world hunger by supporting the WFP or another organization working to end hunger. You can also donate money or time to local food banks or soup kitchens. Or you can advocate for policies that will help reduce hunger and poverty.

The bottom line is that we can end world hunger. But it’s going to take all of us working together to make it happen.

Despite this, they remain hungry while their countries suffer from deadly plagues that demand sweet forgiveness. You may believe you can do nothing, but a single dollar here and there seems to fall off your fingers without a second thought—dollars that could feed starving families for days.

In order to truly address the problem of world hunger, not only must someone travel to these nations and improve their infrastructure in order to give assistance, but you must also keep them in mind so that their suffering does not go unnoticed. The first step is changing one’s diet.

People in these areas often don’t have access to gardens or grocery stores. Without a change in diet, the people will never be able to properly absorb the nutrients they need. They must have access to education so that they can learn about food and its value, not only for themselves but also for their families. The next issue is infrastructure.

These countries must have access to clean water and sanitation so that disease doesn’t spread like wildfire through their communities. They also need roads and transportation so that they can get food and supplies to where they’re needed most. And finally, they need medical care. Too often, children die because they don’t have access to basic medical care, such as vaccinations. World hunger is a problem that can be solved, but it will take more than just money.

It will take a change in mindset and a willingness to help those who cannot help themselves. With your help, we can make the world a better place for everyone. World hunger is a global issue that effects us all. We need to work together to find a solution so that everyone can have access to food and live a healthy life. World hunger is defined as “a condition in which people lack the means necessary to obtain adequate food on a daily basis” (www.endworldhunger.org). According to the World Food Programme, there are 795 million people around the world who are affected by hunger on a daily basis, including 155 million children under the age of five.

Some countries have the resources to provide children with adequate calories to develop and thrive, yet they waste away and die. This is due to malnutrition. Micronutrients (particularly protein) are lacking in many fatal diseases due to a lack of macronutrients (especially protein).

Both kwashiorkor and marasmus are particularly terrible and prevalent forms of malnutrition. Kwashiorkor occurs as a result of a deficit in protein, whereas marasmus results from an absence of all minerals. Both induce youngsters to become heartbreaking images made up of skin and bones. The method to properly subsist on farm must be established in every nation on the planet in order to address this.

World hunger has many causes, but all of them are interconnected. Poverty is the main cause of world hunger. According to World Bank, “Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for tomorrow, living one day at a time.”

This means that people who are poor do not have enough money to buy food or clothes or even pay their rent. They also do not have enough money to go to the doctor when they are sick and they cannot afford to send their children to school because they need them to work in order to earn some money.
