Best Overall : Khan Academy
From preschoolers to high schoolers, there are few educational apps that can measure up to Khan Academy when it comes to the wide range of courses it offers to students of all ages. And, best of all: It’s free.
Khan Academy’s YouTube videos cover most subjects at a range of levels: math, science and engineering, arts, humanities (which includes history and social studies), economics, AP courses, and test prep.
English language arts (ELA) seems to be one notable weakness of Khan Academy classes, though their offerings in this area are growing. There are also no foreign language courses, though Khan Academy instruction is available in dozens of languages, with varying numbers of offerings.
Khan Academy is popular among students, parents, and educators because its videos are engaging and targeted at visual learners, using photos, maps, and other illustrations, and because it allows students to work at their own pace.
The courses include quizzes to test students’ comprehension. Khan Academy has also shifted toward developing materials in conjunction with the Common Core. Another advantage is that it’s a versatile program that can be used on a desktop/laptop or mobile device.
A junior version, Khan Academy Kids , targets young learners from 2 to 8 years old. It’s a mobile device app that covers math, ELA, logic, and social-emotional learning by using books, games, songs, and videos.
Looking for more online learning resources for kids? Check out our round-up of some fun and free education websites .
Best for Young Children : PBS KIDS Games
PBS KIDS Games is a free app and a great supplement to PBS’s legendary, kids TV programming and original series.
Young kids will love the games built around their favorite PBS characters and shows: Daniel Tiger, Elmo, Curious George, Wild Kratts, The Cat in the Hat, and Dinosaur Train.
Parents can feel secure that their preschoolers are getting fun, educational content with no ads. The educational components include letter and word recognition, naming objects, math shapes, and solving puzzles.
While the app is designed for kids ages two to eight, it’s really best for little ones under 5. It's particularly ideal for those who haven't yet started kindergarten, since older kids are likely to find the app too childish.
Best for Kids K-8 : BrainPOP
Like Khan Academy, BrainPOP is a one-stop-shop educational app: It has hundreds of animated educational videos, accompanied by interactive quizzes, activities, and games.
The topics covered by the app are science, social studies, math, English, arts and music, health and social-emotional learning, and engineering and tech. The main difference between BrainPOP and Khan Academy is that the latter is better for high schoolers, while BrainPOP focuses on upper-elementary and middle schoolers.
BrainPOP Jr. is designed for kids in Kindergarten through third grade, and BrainPOP ELL is for English-language learners. Like Khan Academy, BrainPOP has Spanish- and French-language versions, and—because it’s aligned to the Common Core and state standards—it’s used by many school districts to supplement learning.
BrainPOP’s price tag is one thing that may give families some pause: It is $14.95 per month for a home subscription. However, many kids may be able to gain access through their school or teacher’s license. And, it’s a particularly good option for homeschooled kids.
Luckily, there are also some free apps affiliated with BrainPOP that are available on mobile devices: BrainPOP’s Featured Movie (also available in Spanish and French versions), BrainPOP Jr.’s Movie of the Week, and BrainPOP ELL.
Best for High School : Quizlet
Self-directed study is an important skill for high schoolers, and Quizlet is one of the most effective educational apps for material that a student will be tested on.
Teachers and students can create study sets and flashcards on many topics—from the periodic table to U.S. presidents to vocabulary words. The Quizlet Learn feature provides different modes of testing, such as true and false questions and multiple-choice. And, based on the user’s performance, it increases in difficulty over time. Quizlet is particularly good for foreign language study.
Quizlet has over 500 million study sets already created by existing users and archived, so new users can search to see if materials had already been created that match up with their needs.
That said, like Wikipedia, the study sets aren’t fact-checked, so users need to be aware that they may contain errors. However, it’s a free and cheap resource (the Quizlet Plus membership that gives users access to all features is only $35.99 per year), so users should weigh the benefits with the drawbacks.
Best for College : Evernote
Evernote is a free note-taking and organizational app that’s used widely in the business world. It’s particularly helpful for managing projects and improving executive functioning skills, which is why it has filtered down to the student population.
It allows students to make notes and lists, to collect images and links, and to share and sync them easily across platforms and devices. Users can make separate notebooks (like folders) for each subject area, and tag notes for easy access.
It also has a minimalist interface that helps students who tend to get distracted to stay on task, and has editing tools like color-coding and highlighting. The microphone feature is especially useful for students who have difficulty with verbal memory.
Although Evernote’s Basic plan is free, it doesn’t give people access to all the app’s organization and sharing features. For example, users can only work with two different devices on the Basic plan, and it has a limited, monthly upload limit. The Personal version costs $14.99 per month and may be a good investment for students who find themselves using the app daily. There are also even more advanced versions for business use.
Best for Adults : edX
Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX is one of the top Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) platforms. It allows anyone free access to university courses from the country’s top universities and professors.
Although courses are free, if users want official course credit, they will have to pay: Fees can vary massively. Still, the app offers thousands of courses in a wide range of subjects from universities like Harvard, UC Berkeley, MIT, Michigan, and many international universities. Sessions range from practical offerings like Japanese Business Management to enrichment classes like Intro to Italian Opera.
edX courses are available in a range of languages, though there are many more options in English. Courses vary in length—some are six weeks long, others last 11 weeks—and most involve a commitment of three to six hours a week. Video lectures are followed by short quizzes, and for more hands-on courses like computer programming, there are interactive labs and features.
In addition to one-off courses, edX offers professional certificate programs, such as the MicroMasters Program , to help working adults beef up their resumes and professional development.
Best for Reading : Newsela
Newsela is an app that allows students from grades K through 12 to access news articles written for their specific reading level. It takes articles written by respected media outlets and rewrites them for five different reading levels.
It then tests students’ comprehension through quizzes that follow each news article. One of the reasons Newsela is such a great app is that along with facilitating reading comprehension, it provides media literacy and knowledge about current events to students. In the era of fake news, media literacy is particularly important, given the evidence that many students can’t tell the difference between news and ads.
All Newsela articles are Common Core-aligned, which makes it a popular tool among educators. The app also includes a lot of content in Spanish, which is great for dual-language immersion schools and English-language learners.
While certain features of the app are free, full access is only through a paid license, although students can access it through their school’s license. Unfortunately, Newsela doesn’t list the cost of the expanded version publicly, which would be helpful for transparency.
Best for Foreign Languages : Duolingo
Duolingo is by far the most popular app for learning a language, in part because it’s free. It’s a game-based, language-learning tool that can be used by a wide range of ages, from middle schoolers to adults.
Users are guided through instructional activities that cover all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They get immediate feedback about errors and an explanation.
Duolingo offers education in 40 languages for native English speakers. The instruction is much more comprehensive and varied in widely-spoken languages like Spanish, than it is for more rare dialects.
Duolingo is particularly appealing to teens, as the app has a reward system for users who meet their daily threshold. There’s also an in-app, social network component that encourages younger users to invite their friends and compete with them to see who can advance the quickest.
Of course, with all foreign languages, cultural immersion is the only thing that can truly result in fluency, but as far as language-learning apps go, Duolingo is the gold standard.
Best for Math : DragonBox
While Khan Academy does a great job with math, the various DragonBox apps specialize in math learning, using games to make it fun. Some reviews even call the app “addictive.”
DragonBox Algebra 5+ and DragonBox Numbers are designed for younger learners, from 4 to 8 years old. The special thing about Algebra 5+, one of the more popular apps, is that no prior knowledge of algebra is needed, since it's simply learning a type of puzzle game. The Numbers app introduces young learners to addition and subtraction.
DragonBox Big Numbers is designed for 6- to 9-year-olds and builds on Numbers, by giving kids more complex problems with carrying and borrowing. DragonBox Algebra 12+ is the most advanced app, covering algebraic equations.
None of the DragonBox apps are free, although you can buy a monthly subscription for around $6 to gain access to all apps, making it well worth the money.
How Effective Are Apps at Providing Educational Instruction?
While most of these apps have been around for several years, and are valued as learning tools, they aren’t a substitute for person-to-person instruction. In general, there’s data suggesting that math apps are somewhat effective at raising test scores, but the same hasn’t been found for reading apps.
How Should I Use Educational Apps With My Younger Children?
The use of apps should be limited to younger children, in particular, in line with the recommendations suggested by pediatricians. Children younger than 24 months generally shouldn’t have screen time at all, and those from 2 to 5 years old should be limited to one hour a day. In addition, pediatricians recommend that parents engage with these apps along with their young children.
The best educational apps have features that allow children to be actively engaged, not get distracted, and connect the app content to their existing knowledge. Finally, open-ended, choose-your-own-adventure-style apps are more likely to be educational than linear ones, because they are child-led instead of app-led.
How We Chose the Best Educational Apps
We consulted dozens of editorial reviews by relevant publications—like The New York Times product review publication Wirecutter, Lifewire, and parenting magazines—as well as reviews by non-profit organizations like Common Sense Media, the American Association of School Librarians, and the Fordham Institute.
We aimed to provide app recommendations for a wide range of learning groups, from preschoolers to adult learners, and to target a few, subject-specific apps that are particularly effective. In addition, we tested out some of the apps to become familiar with their features.

14 Apps That Actually Help Kids Learn to Read
T hese days, practically as soon as kids enter traditional kindergarten, they’re expected to be reading. Reading levels in school are deemed extremely important from the get-go, and the push for more academic early education has led to more kids underperforming in the earliest years of school. Because some kids may not be developmentally ready to read, have shorter attention spans or, in some cases, have learning differences that prevent them from reading, it can be a stressful experience.
As a mom who was told her daughter was falling behind in reading at the young age of five, I know the feeling well. While I didn’t exactly agree that my daughter needed to be a seasoned reader at five or even six, I worried most about how her confidence would be affected if she was falling behind her peers.
I tried to support her the best I could and found that a low-pressure approach worked best. We spent time reading together and practicing sounding out words, but playing reading games on an iPhone and tablet felt more like fun and less like work. I realized that when my kid was relaxed and playing games, rather than stressed or frustrated, she could absorb the information easier. Here are some of the best reading apps for kids that she still enjoys learning from and playing.
It’s all in the name. This app , which give access to 25,000 books with read-along technology, games and more, is truly epic.
Kids will have so much to do, they’ll never get bored reading stories of all kinds, learning phonics and just playing, as kids should.
Want to help kids reduce screen time and develop their imagination and creativity? Download Animopus from the App Store . Animopus is a drawing app for kids (ages 2 and up) that turns cartoon consumers into cartoon creators.
Another absolute favorite app is ABCmouse . The step-by-step learning path lets kids track their progress and earn rewards for their work.
While there’s tons of reading work to be done at various skill levels, there are more than 850 lessons overall. Those include digital books, puzzles, games, songs and animations that create a very interactive reading experience.
VocabularySpellingCity
Popular among homeschool families for its planning and tracking features, VocabularySpellingCity is not only filled with fun games, but is a quality reading tool to help kids learn to read.
Parents can set up year-long word study playlists and activities to keep kids busy, focused and constantly learning to read.
The creators of this app truly understood that fun makes learning easy, which is why it's filled with fun games that kids can choose based on their interests.
It’s designed for kids ages two to eight with age appropriate tasks for each level and grows with your child so they can start early as toddlers and keep the learning going into elementary school (and beyond).
The Starfall app offers multiple levels to encourage even the earliest readers to play along.
Beginning with ABCs to “I’m reading,” it lets kids practice with fun read-alongs, letter matching games and much more.
While not just for kids, this app is great for them. It allows you to download audiobooks from the local library instantly and listen on demand. Studies have shown that audiobooks are great for important reading skills, such as listening to sounds, as well as comprehension.
Even more, listening to stories is fun for timid readers, and with a world of books at their fingertips, Hoopla makes it easy.
Endless Reader
Kids love monsters, and with Endless Reader , they get to play with them.
The adorable creators will help them learn to recognize important sight words that are crucial to early reading with puzzles and letters that come alive and show them exactly what word they spelled. It's a good way to make the reading lessons memorable.
Hooked on Phonics
While Hooked on Phonics may be an oldie, the technology of the app is definitely a goodie. With more than 275 phonics activities, kids have tons to choose from, and it’s easy to find something that’s right for everyone.
The interactive games let kids practice essential reading skills while earning fun incentives at the same time. Plus, the app correlates to federal and state reading proficiency standards through first grade.
The best part about this app is the colorful and beautiful world of stories kids can choose from when playing. The narration brings each story to life and keeps kids engaged.
It’s been shown that kids read for longer periods of time when using it, and the read-along features make it easy to follow.
Amazon FreeTime
With access to tons of awesome and unique kids books, there is no shortage of reading time on this app .
And the best part? The parent dashboard feature makes it a unique experience, allowing you to set up educational goals and track your child’s reading from your own device.
Kids Academy
This app strikes the right note with kids because the experience is so personalized — something missing from most educational opportunities.
With Kids Academy’s engaging and adaptive experience, kids will get just what they need and find the learning course that engages them the most. With more than 5,000 activities, that could include educational games, interactive and printable worksheets, songs, puzzles and flashcards.
Dr. Seuss Treasury
Nobody does reading quite like Dr. Seuss, and the app is no exception.
With 55 Dr. Seuss books all in one place, kids can sort and search books, finding all their favorite characters, including the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch and the Lorax. It also allows them to record their own voice reading and learn new vocabulary with tappable words.
Reading Raven
This popular app for four- to eight-year-olds helps kids to read with its learning adventure guide.
It’s multi-sensory, has step-by-step lessons and hundreds of activities for kids to enjoy. The highly engaging content helps build confidence and reading skills at the same time.
Monkey Word School Adventure
This creative and intuitive app takes kids through phonics exercises to help their early reading skills begin to develop. They can trace letters, practice rhyming with a fun maze, practice spelling and more.
After every round, the game gives a reward — a plant or animal to add to a terrarium — making it even more fun to play, learn and earn!

Google Play Books has come a long way since it first came out. Now it’s one of the best education apps out there. The subject matter that you can purchase ranges from fantasy and fiction to non-fiction, comics, and virtually any other genre. There is also a wide selection of educational books, text books, guidebooks, and other literature of educational value. Prices are generally on par with other ebook platforms. However, it’s not the only ebook platform available. Those who don’t like Google Play Books can also try Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble Nook.
Khan Academy is another education platform. It offers a variety of courses and classes to people. It currently boasts over 10,000 instructional videos, classes, and other content. It’s all completely free as well. Khan Academy deals with more typical education, such as mathematics, economics, history, science, and more. They also have an app specifically for kids that has many of the same features. It’s definitely one of the better free education apps. There is also a version specifically for younger kids and we highly recommend that one as well.

MyScript Calculator 2 is a fun math app for both kids and adults. It lets you write out problems with your finger or a stylus. The app then converts your writing and solves the problem for you. It’s one of the most visually enjoyable calculators that we’ve ever seen. It supports a number of operations, including basic algebra, basic trigonometry, basic arithmetic, and some other stuff as well. You can also write out some things, like division and fractions, in several different ways. This is highly recommended for those in grade school, high school, and even part way into college. The app runs for $2.99 with no in-app purchases.

Quizlet is arguably the best flashcards app out there. You can use it for virtually any topic. You can practice terms for your class, memorize vocabulary terms, and more. It also includes foreign language support, images and audio, and you can share flashcards with friends. The free version gives you a limited number of flashcard sets to use. The pro version removes all of the limitations. Cram.com is another excellent flashcard app.

Socratic is an excellent educational app. It lets you take photos of various things and tells you about them. You can take a photo of a math problem, a history question, a chemistry formula, or whatever else. The app then tries to answer the question and also show you how to answer it again in the future. It covers about half a dozen subjects. The app is also completely free with no ads or in-app purchases. We recommend this one to just about everybody, but especially for high school kids and younger. Google bought this app a while back and republished it under Google’s name. We have that version linked up at the button below but you can find the original here for the time being .
SoloLearn is a developer on Google Play. They have tons of education apps. Their specialization is in computer programming. Thus, all of their apps teach you a computer language. There is a range of languages available, including Python, Java, C++, HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, SQL, and even Swift. All of the apps are completely free and each one has stellar user reviews. Udemy was one of the first education apps on mobile to offer up the courses. It currently boasts over 32,000 courses in total that range from science and technology to cooking and foreign language. Some of the other topics include business, marketing, entrepreneurship, design, health and fitness, music, photography, and there are even courses to help you learn the software. The courses range greatly in terms of the quality of content. Some of them are not so great. Others are fantastic. There are both free and paid courses as well. The app is pretty decent and carries most of the features of the official website as well.
Wolfram Alpha
Price: $2.99
Wolfram Alpha is a little bit like Socratic, but a little more powerful with a slightly steeper learning curve. It covers dozens of categories across over two dozen subjects. It can help with math problems, geography questions, and even people in history. This is a valuable resource for anyone in high school or college especially. However, anyone can benefit from it. It suffers from the occasional connection issue. Otherwise, this is an excellent app all around. It goes for $2.99 with no additional ads or in-app purchases.

YouTube is probably the best of the education apps for practical learning. You can find tutorials and how-to videos for virtually anything. It can include changing the oil in your car, solving a math problem, lectures on astronomy, or learning how to tie-dye t-shirts. Most YouTube channels don’t adhere to a course style of learning. Thus, you usually only get a tutorial or two before having to move on. Some channels do have course-style videos. In any case, YouTube is a great secondary learning source. You can also pay $12.99 per month for YouTube Premium and avoid all of the annoying ads.

Best Free Book Reading App: Media365 Book Reader
Massive library of popular and niche ebooks that can be read for free.
Ability to import your own ebook files for reading in the app.
Offline reading requires a $1.99 upgrade.
Only for Android.
Media365 is a free reading app for Android that lets you read any of the books in its library in exchange for the occasional fullscreen advertisement. Authors can self-publish on the Media 365 platform, which is why so many niche and indie titles are available. Many mainstream books are also available, like the entire Harry Potter book series.
The Media 365 library stores eBooks in 15 languages, while font size can be adjusted simply by doing a two-finger pinch on the screen. There’s also a text-to-speech function, which lets the app read books to you. You can also upload your ebooks with supported EPUB, PDF, AZW3, CBC, CBR, CBZ, CHM, FB2, LIT, MOBI, TCR, AI, and PUB formats.

Best eBook Reader App for Amazon Prime Members: Kindle
Massive library of ebooks to choose from.
Apps are updated on a very regular basis.
The Kindle app for Windows is more for traditional computers than touchscreens.
Can’t buy ebooks within the iOS or Android Kindle app.
The official Kindle apps on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows are Amazon’s way of letting their customers consume their Kindle ebooks without having to buy a Kindle.
Any Kindle-branded ebook on the Amazon website can be read within the Kindle app. A variety of features set this app experience apart from its rivals, including the built-in dictionary, the ability to skip ahead without losing your place, and Amazon’s X-Ray tech, which reveals extra information on a book’s characters and world while you’re reading.
The Amazon Kindle apps aren’t perfect, though. The Windows Kindle app is designed more for traditional desktop computers than modern devices with touchscreens, and the iOS and Android versions don’t support ebook purchases. However, Kindle eBooks can still be purchased on the Amazon website and will sync to the Kindle app almost immediately.
Most-Available Reading App: Rakuten Kobo
Loads of options to customize the reading experience.
There’s an official Kobo app for most phones in existence.
The Windows app is incredibly outdated, and the Facebook login doesn’t work.
Audiobooks are only available on the iOS and Android apps.
Rakuten’s Kobo is a major competitor to Amazon, with millions of ebooks and a growing number of audiobooks on its platform. The iOS and Android Kobo apps are clearly where the company puts most of its attention, with each app offering an impressive variety of font sizes, styles, and color options to make the reading experience more personal and comfortable for individual users.
The Kobo app is also available for Windows 10 in the Microsoft Store app store. Windows users will want to download the separate desktop version of the app, though, which is updated regularly and offers more features. The desktop app also works on Macs.
Best Reading App for Kids: Epic!
Lots of in-app gamification that encourages kids to read more.
Great selection of classic and modern children’s books.
App requires a monthly subscription to use, though a 30-day free trial is available.
Changing settings is a bit of a convoluted process.
Epic! is like a Netflix for kids, but instead of TV shows and movies, it supplies the user with a massive library of ebooks and audiobooks . Parents can make unique profiles for each of their children, who can customize their profiles based on their tastes.
While many classic children’s books are available to download, there are also many modern releases, such as one series of books covering famous pop culture icons. Children can also choose from family-friendly comic books like Snoopy and The Smurfs and numerous short video clips created by DreamWorksTV.
Best iPhone eBook Reader App: Yomu EBook Reader
Supports EPUB, MOBI, PRC, AZW, AZW3, KF8, CBZ, CBR, and PDF files.
eBooks can be saved to the Yomu app from any iOS web browser.
Settings menu is very hard to find after adding books.
Download links should be in the main menu, not in the tutorial.
The Yomu EBook Reader is a fantastic app for iPhone and iPad users who download their ebooks in various file formats and want to bring them all together for a cohesive reading experience.
Yomu, Japanese for “to read,” supports all of the popular ebook file formats and those supported by Amazon Kindle. Files can be imported to the app via a cloud service like iCloud , Dropbox, Google Drive , or OneDrive , and once the app is installed, Yomu will appear as a source when saving ebook files from any iOS web browser app.
PDF eBook Reading App: Foxit PDF Reader
PDF files can be shared directly to the app on iOS.
Reflow options makes all files readable on small screens.
Ability to create a new PDF file requires a $14.99 monthly subscription on iOS and Android.
Lack of a back button on app screens makes navigation very confusing.
Foxit PDF Reader Mobile is one of the better PDF apps and is an ideal solution for those who prefer to consume ebooks in the PDF file format . Unlike many similar apps that display a PDF as is and require you to pinch and zoom to read its content, Foxit features a reflow setting that resizes and reorganizes the text on a page to fit perfectly on a mobile phone’s screen.
PDF files can be transferred to the Foxit app via Wi-Fi , iCloud, or Foxit’s own Foxit Drive service. Those using an iOS device can import downloaded files directly from the share feature while using other apps. A monthly subscription is needed to take advantage of many advanced settings, but those looking for an app to simply read their PDF ebooks will be fine with the free functionality.
Best eBook Reader For Android Phones And Tablets: AIReader
Supports a lot of Android devices with the minimum OS requirement being Android 2.3.
Multiple profiles can be used for different app settings.
No support for PDF files.
Scrolling can be very jittery on lower-end Android tablets.
AIReader is a popular reading app on Android due to its support for older Android smartphones and tablets running operating systems as out-of-date as Android 2.3. It should be mentioned that many of the scrolling and related animations aren’t as smooth as they should be on older devices, but the ebook reading experience is still solid. Most major file types will work no matter which Android device you’re on.
Best Reading App on Nintendo Switch: Inky Pen
Large selection of free comics from lots of popular franchises.
Comics look great on the Nintendo Switch.
$7.99 a month will be a bit expensive for some people.
No Marvel or DC Comics series.
Most would think the Nintendo Switch is just for playing games, but its library of non-game apps has been slowly growing since its launch. One of these apps, Inky Pen, is a full-fledged comic book reading app that lets anyone read full digital issues from popular comic book series on their Switch.
Inky Pen does charge a monthly fee of $7.99 for unlimited access to its entire library, but there are an impressive amount of free issues available that will keep most comic fans entertained during long car trips or lazy weekends. What’s cool is the app works when the Nintendo Switch is docked so that a group can read comics on a TV.
Best Reading App for Google Addicts: Google Play Books
Very smooth reading experience with a page turn animation looks fantastic.
Runs really well on cheap, low-end Android tablets.
App needs to switch to the Google Play app every time you want to read more about a book.
Has a much smaller selection than Amazon.
Google Play Books, as its title suggests, is Google’s first-party app for reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks bought within the Google Play Store . The book selection isn’t as extensive as Amazon’s, but it’s still large enough to please the casual reader. Those who enjoy reading at least one book a day may want more.
The good thing is that Google Play Books doesn’t need a subscription service. It can be used to enjoy a purchased ebook or audiobook one weekend, then ignored for a week without feeling financial guilt for not taking advantage of some monthly fee.
It’s a very solid reading experience for when you want to use it, is incredibly stable and easy to use, and has some of the best page-turn animations out of all the book-reading apps.
Google Play Books is an excellent reading app, especially for those immersed in the Google ecosystem.

Intro to buying content in Apple Business Manager
The App Store features thousands of apps. Fortunately, Apple Business Manager gives your organization a simple way to acquire and manage these apps in the Apps and Books Store. Using device management, you can install and update apps remotely, even if the App Store is disabled on the device.
Note: Depending on your local tax requirements, you may be required to provide tax information when you initially set up your organization to buy content.
Distributing apps
Besides buying apps, you can also revoke and reassign apps to different devices and users. In this way, you always retain full ownership and control of apps you bought. You can assign the apps you bought through Apple Business Manager to any devices or users in any country or region where those apps are available from that location’s App Store. (The App Store Country or Region is determined by the address submitted when your organization signs up for Apple Business Manager. For example, if your organization signed up with an address in the United States, the App Store locale is set to United States.)
App distribution works best when the app is assigned before devices are configured or given to users. After the user receives the device and completes the Setup Assistant, Apple Business Manager can send the user an invitation by email or push notification. When the user accepts the invitation, the user has access to all of the apps—which are then remotely installed on the user’s devices.
Note: In-app purchases and subscriptions aren’t compatible with volume purchasing, Managed Apps, or Managed Apple IDs . Developers may offer a separate full-featured version of their apps (sometimes as a Custom App) for education or enterprise customers that need to deploy apps at scale.
Distribute Apple Books
Apple Books bought through Apple Business Manager can be distributed only to users, not devices. They can’t be revoked and reassigned. When books are assigned to users, those books follow the same country and region download restrictions as apps.
Note: Some Apple Books content isn’t available in certain countries or regions. To learn whether certain Apple Books content is available in your country or region, see the Apple Support article Availability of Apple programs and payment methods for education and business .
Recommendations
To simplify your deployment, it’s highly recommended that you assign apps to devices instead of users. With device-based app assignment, there’s no invitation process or requirement to use an Apple ID on the device. Books can’t be assigned to devices.
To alleviate bandwidth saturation during the initial mass deployment, consider distributing only the apps necessary for the first day of deployment, and then make additional apps available to users for download over time. If the device is supervised, apps are installed silently.

Book Bans Continue to Surge in Public Schools
More books were removed during the first half of this academic year than in the entire previous one.
By Alexandra Alter
Book bans in public schools continued to surge in the first half of this school year, according to a report released on Tuesday by PEN America, a free speech organization.
From July to December 2023, PEN found that more than 4,300 books were removed from schools across 23 states — a figure that surpassed the number of bans from the entire previous academic year.
The rise in book bans has accelerated in recent years, driven by conservative groups and by new laws and regulations that limit what kinds of books children can access. Since the summer of 2021, PEN has tracked book removals in 42 states and found instances in both Republican- and Democratic-controlled districts.
The numbers likely fail to capture the full scale of book removals. PEN compiles its figures based on news reports, public records requests and publicly available data, but many removals go unreported.
Here are some of the report’s key findings.
Book removals are continuing to accelerate
Book bans are not new in the United States. School and public libraries have long had procedures for addressing complaints, which were often brought by parents concerned about their children’s reading material.
But the current wave stands out in its scope. Censorship efforts have become increasingly organized and politicized, supercharged by conservative groups like Moms for Liberty and Utah Parents United, which have pushed for legislation that regulates the content of library collections. Since PEN began tracking book bans, it has counted more than 10,000 instances of books being removed from schools. Many of the targeted titles feature L.G.B.T.Q. characters, or deal with race and racism, PEN found.
Florida had the highest number of removals
Florida’s schools had the highest number of book bans last semester, with 3,135 books removed across 11 school districts. Within Florida, the bulk of bans took place in Escambia County public schools , where more than 1,600 books were removed to ensure that they didn’t violate a statewide education law prohibiting books that depict or refer to sexual conduct. (In the sweep, some schools removed dictionaries and encyclopedias.)
Book removals have spiked in Florida because of several state laws, passed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and a Republican-controlled legislature, that aim in part to regulate reading and educational materials.
Florida has also become a testing ground for book banning tactics around the country, said Kasey Meehan, the program director of PEN America’s Freedom to Read Program.
“In some ways, what’s happening in Florida is incubated and then spread nationwide," she said. “We see the way in which very harmful pieces of legislation that have led to so much of the book banning crisis in Florida have been replicated, or provisions of those laws have been proposed or enacted in states like South Carolina and Iowa and Idaho.”
Books depicting sexual assault are increasingly being targeted
With the rise of legislation and policies that aim to prohibit books with sexual content from school libraries, books that depict sexual assault have been challenged with growing frequency. PEN found that nearly 20 percent of books that were banned during the 2021-2023 school years were works that address rape and sexual assault.
Last year, several books that deal with sexual violence were removed from West Ada School District in Idaho, among them a graphic novel edition of Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the poetry collection “Milk and Honey” by Rupi Kaur, Jaycee Dugard’s memoir, “A Stolen Life” and Amy Reed’s young adult novel, “The Nowhere Girls.”
In Collier County, Fla., public school officials — aiming to comply with a new law that restricts access to books that depict “sexual conduct” — removed hundreds of books from the shelves last year, including “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale Hurston; “A Time To Kill,” by John Grisham; and “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison.
A movement to counter book bans is growing
Opponents of book bans — including parents, students, free speech and library organizations, booksellers and authors — are leading an organized effort to stop book removals, often with the argument that book bans violate the First Amendment, which protects the right to access information.
Last fall, hundreds of students in Alaska’s Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District staged a walkout to protest challenges to more than 50 books. At a school board meeting last October in Laramie County, Wyo., students held a “read-in” to silently protest book bans. Elsewhere, students have formed banned books clubs, held marches and created free community bookshelves in their towns to make titles more accessible.
Legislatures in California and Illinois have passed “anti-book ban” laws. In several states, including Texas and Florida , lawsuits have been filed in an effort to overturn legislation that has made it easier to ban books.
“In nearly every case that’s come forward, judges have been finding that these laws are unconstitutional,” said Jonathan Friedman, who oversees PEN America’s U.S. Free Expression programs. Still, Friedman said it could take years for the laws to be challenged and possibly overturned, and noted that new legislation keeps proliferating.
“I don’t have the sense that this issue is about to go away,” he said.

I’ve never been so greatful towards an app before, usually there was a deal with other apps that you had only a few tries before you had to pay for the full thing or wait your time…which 90% of the time didn’t even give you an answer or help… I’ve never had something this smooth be so dang helpful 😭❤️ Not only did it help me pass my test (88% omg 😍) but it also gave helpful advice and dumbed it down for me so i didn’t have to read through everything. Quite literally gave me the information i wanted and also the answer which is AMAZING 😨❤️Helped me better understand the questions SO THANK YOU 🙏 will definitely be using this on math 🥶 hoping for the same smoothness on math since it’s what i struggle with but overall just from a first time use i’m deeply thankful for this app!! 😭🙏❤️

I LOVE this app!! 💞💞💖💖
So I use edgecourseware and some of the questions can get VERY hard, and it gets to the point I want someone smart to answer it for me. So the other day I was scrolling on TikTok just to find THIS helpful app, and I think of my edgecourseware. So I’m all like “omg! This app can help me with edgecourseware!” So I don’t hesitate to download it. I get on edgecourseware and show the camera to a hard question and press the button, and it gives me the answer! And this thing has retakes on it so I had to retake the test cause I was always getting wrong answers on it! And the scores would come out bad too! So I see my test scores to compare them, 60% - 100% !! I love this app. If it weren’t for this app, I would have never passed the test! 🩷🩷 xoxo
Pretty good, but…
I really like this app because when I’m having a hard time with my math in school, I go onto this app and check to see if my answers are right. If not, I see what I did wrong which prevents mistakes and helps me to learn. Especially since not too many people I know understand my math, it makes it a lot easier. There’s absolutely no ads, and if you’re confused about something, you can ask it any question. However, it can’t do the work of area correctly. I had an answer of 168, even my dad checked it, and it told me 288, which is far off. I don’t even know how it got that answer. It’s good for basically any math, except for geometry and area, and you know that sort of thing. I also was simplifying expressions and it gave me wrong answers for 2 of them even though I did them in school and checked it with the class. You have to be careful that way.
