If you are interested in technical or vocational career options, an associate degree is a perfect option for you.

You just need to get some post-secondary education to enroll in one of these careers.

You can apply for this program only after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.

According to the data, most graduate students have a full-time job so colleges and universities tend to offer flexible schedules for them.

The first one is related to work with patients while the second one – to policy, politics, and management.

Doctoral Degrees

A Doctoral degree is the highest academic degree and it can be obtained only in a university.

To complete your training, you need from 3 to 8 years and sometimes even more, depending on the field you are interested in.

Some doctoral degree programs are available only to those who have a bachelor’s degree while others can be obtained after completing an undergraduate program.

There is a variety of Doctoral degree options but the most popular is the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

After completing this degree program, you can work as a teacher in a university or apply for some careers that require extensive training.

For example, psychologists and medical doctors need a doctoral degree if they want to be licensed.

“Workers with a doctoral degree had both the highest median annual salaries — more than $100,000 — and the lowest unemployment of any level of educational attainment.” *Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015

Ph.D. Doctor of Philosophy

To begin with, Doctor of Philosophy is a degree that is not only for philosophers.

These letters can be divided into two parts.

The first letter indicates the level of the degree:

  • B – bachelor’s degree;
  • M – master’s degree;
  • D – doctoral degree.

The second part of the abbreviation stands for the field of training:

  • S -science;
  • Ph – philosophy and so on.

What Is the Difference Between Arts and Science Degrees?

As we’ve said before, there are two main types of degree fields – art and science.

Usually, art degrees cover a wide range of disciplines and issues.

At the same time, being a “science” student means you need to have some deep, technical understanding of your field of interest.

What Designations Exist for Doctoral Students?

When it comes to liberal art disciplines, Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy is the highest degree you can obtain.

At the same time, those interested in clinical and counseling psychology can obtain PsyD, Doctor of Psychology degree.

Medical students can apply for an M.D. degree and law students – for J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree.

What Other Specialized Degrees Exist?

Well put and easy to understand and above all challenging.

The teaching of linear thinking as we have seen for centuries focusing in on one item of interest while many topics of research are related. In order for a person to find solutions to problems understanding matrices of related subjects leads to many doors of possibilities to finding solutions instead of satisfying a theory. Great diagram. While you see a circle, we should be visualising a globe. Life is not flat! Thinking should not be shallow nor linear.

When one takes a phd one wants to laser focus that research topic.

I’m just a 12 year old ensuring my future by knowing all of these stuff before I need to know it

I m pursuing 2 yr MBBS and i want to know whether to focus on csir ugc net for doing PhD or ms or MD which one has a good payscale

Do you have the talent with the Node.js and the Mongo DB? Is you have proven track record of doing needful? Do you have doctorate?

Very good example, made me think better of where I need to be.

This is brilliant! To its creators and the admins of this website…thank you! 🙂

remember, even PhD, its look like an acne from a knowledge face

Sorry. I would have to disagree. I only have my masters. But I have encountered so many doctorate individuals who know far less than me. Sorry to disappoint you and contradict your article.

I think the big differnce, is that with masters you’ll only know more and more about more topics but not further than the human knowledge at the time. A PHD will mark you as someone that introduced something new to human knowledge that didn’t exist before, and that doesn’t imply the person knowing more or less, but that they pushed those boundaries.

Accurate admission requirements are to be found on university websites, not on public forums such as these. If you can’t find it, contact the admissions department of the university you want to apply to. Masters degrees are not always a requirement for PhD programmes, but sometimes they are.

Essential factors for PhD admissions: Again, check the websites. Research skills, vision and motivation are really important. You’ll need a research proposal.

Hi Krishna!

It’s good to hear that you are interested to pursue Ph.D program. In vast majority of cases, prior academic publications are not required for Ph.D admissions in case if you are applying for Ph.D programs after completing of masters or bachelors degree program. Although after joining in Ph.D program, a student produces ‘n’ number of academic publications. So producing a publication prior to Ph.D admission is not so mandatory.

I am working as asst professor in engineering college of india.

hello, I am working as asst. professor chemical engineering, want to do PhD in chemical engineering field , how would i get admission in UK/USA universities and what is the chances to get admission there and how much investment I need ? Please give full information regarding it.

Full information is generally available on the websites of the specific universities. Admissions requirements, application processes and programme cost (I assume this is what you mean by “investment”) are all found on the websites of the respective universities. Chances of admission vary from university to university and not all universities put those statistics on their website, but if you put in some effort to go looking for it yourself, I think you should be able to find it.

I have 16+ Years and completed my DECE in 97, Btech (CMJU) in 2012 and Masters (Middlesex,UK) in 2013. I am looking for Phd opportunities in US for telecom field.

Neither. BSc is bachelor of science. Medical degrees are bachelor of medicine and surgery (MBBS, MBChB, BMBS, MBBCh etc depending on how you abbreviate Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae). You generally carry the title of “doctor” afterwards, though, even without a PhD.

this one some what explainable…but good.

I like to read more about it.

This is a most innovative way to describe “what is PhD ?” and I am indeed lucky to be associated with Dr. Matt Might.

I am working as Asst Prof. In India with Highest qualification of Masters in Engineering. Masters in engineering is the course which does not belive only on semester patern but gives lot of exposour to research work. Now I am very interested doing research in the domain of Image Processing . What are the different job aportunities ( Excluding Education Industries) after PhD form USA in Computer Engineering ( specifically in Image Processing Domain) u can suggest???

You will find most of the opportunities in research laboratories. After completing a doctoral program, it is very obvious that you would be involved in full time research. In fact many students go ahead for a post doctoral program as well and take up teaching jobs at the respective Universities.

PhD Ne Demek? Açılımı Nedir? Ne Kadar Sürer? PhD MS Tanımı

PhD Ne Demek?

Materials Science & Engineering MS/PhD

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers three graduate degree programs: the Master of Engineering (MEng), 5th Year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (BS/MS), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Master of Engineering (MEng)

In collaboration with other departments in the College of Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering is offering a professional masters degree. The accelerated program is designed to develop professional engineering leaders in materials science and engineering who are seeking knowledge and leadership experience in MSE.

Prospective students will be engineers, typically with industrial experience, who aspire to substantially advance in their careers and ultimately to lead large, complex organizations, both in the public and private sectors.

You may choose to apply to either the full-time one-year program or part-time program for working professionals. You will be asked to choose which option you will be considered for during the application process. Both options employ the same standards and criteria for admissions.

5th Year Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (BS/MS)

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers a five-year combined BS/MS program to our undergraduate student cohort. In this program, the existing four-year undergraduate program (BS) will be augmented with a fifth year of graduate study that provides a professionally-oriented component, preparing students for careers in engineering or engineering management within the business, government, and industrial sectors. This five-year program emphasizes interdisciplinary study through an independent project coupled to coursework.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Students pursuing the PhD may also declare a designated emphasis (DE) in one of the following programs: Communication, Computation, and Statistics; Computational and Genomic Biology; Computational Science and Engineering; Energy Science and Technology; or Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

Combined BS/MS Program

Since 2008, the Department has offered a combined BS/MS degree program to enable talented students to earn both a BS and an MS, both in Computer Science, within a shorter period than earning the degrees separately, typically 5 years.

Students in this program must satisfy all standard requirements for both the Computer Science BS and MS degrees; however, students admitted as Combined BS/MS may use up to 9 credits that were taken while enrolled as an undergraduate toward both degrees. Students applying for the program should familiarize themselves with the MS degree requirements, found in our graduate policy manual.

* Only courses in CMSC, AMSC/MATH/STAT are eligible for double-counting.

Eligibility

Interested students must meet the following criteria before their application can undergo a holistic review:

  • Hold a major in Computer Science at UMD; double majors are acceptable, however, students from non-CS majors are ineligible
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 *
  • Possess no more than 30 remaining credits of CMSC courses for the B.S. degree
  • Have no more than six credits of General Education requirements left to complete for the B.S. degree
  • At the time of application, be within two to three semesters away from their undergraduate graduation
  • Have engaged/initiated research activities under the supervision of a member of the graduate faculty
  • Have obtained a recommendation letter from that faculty member stating they and agree to advise the student during their M.S. program
  • Submit a CV detailing relevant experience and qualifications

* Note: If your GPA is marginally below the required threshold (e.g 3.48) but you anticipate it will meet or exceed this by the admission deadline, you may initiate the application process; however, the CS Graduate Office will only proceed with your application when your GPA achieves the requisite 3.5 minimum. Those who do not meet this requirement are welcome to apply to the non-combined M.S. program or any professional Masters programs.

Your Combined BS/MS Degree Journey

Step 1: Research Graduate Programs. As you approach two or three semesters away from graduation, begin your exploration of the graduate school process. Start reviewing UMD CS graduate degree requirements and plan your CS coursework. You will need to take three 400-level CMSC classes in a semester to submit your to Combined BS/MS form. Also consider diving into research opportunities to strengthen your applications.

Step 2: Complete Your Dual BS/MS Coursework. You will need to register for the three 400-level CMSC courses that will be used towards your undergraduate and graduate degrees*. Submit the Combined Bachelor's/Master's degree form using the provided form link to the CS Graduate Office. Upon approval, the office will secure the necessary signatures and inform you upon forwarding the approved forms to the Graduate School.

Step 3: Receive Graduate School Approval. After the Graduate School reviews and approves your form, you will be able to proceed to the standard online graduate application.

Step 4: Apply To The CS Graduate Program. Apply via the standard online graduate application and submit your BS/MS Program Application (further details on admission application and deadlines are available here ). You must apply for the CS Graduate program in a fall semester (either third-to-last or second-to-last semester) to start in the subsequent spring or fall semesters. After completing the Demographics section, navigate to the "Educational Intent" part of the application. Under "Level of Study", choose "Combined Bachelor's-Master's".

Step 5: Bachelor's Program Graduation! You must graduate in the semester you indicated on your graduate application. Please see the "Commencement Delays" section for more information.

Step 6: After Being Admitted To The CS Graduate Program:

  • Combined BS/MS Form: Allows certain credits to be double-counted in your bachelor's and master's program
  • Graduate School Inclusion Form: Ensures the double-counted credits are recognized and counted towards your degree

Step 7: Master's Program Graduation! Once everything is in place and you have met all requirements, celebrate the achievement of your Master's degree.

* Note: The Graduate School cannot retroactively approve courses for BS/MS credit, so courses that will be double counted for the BS/MS program must be taken in the same term. This may create complications if students cannot register for a third 400-level CS course; however, students may be able to utilize a suitable 400-level AMSC/MATH/STAT substitute.

Key Points to Remember:

  • You won't have the ability to choose the "Combined Bachelor's-Master's" option under "Level of Study" until the Graduate School approves your Combined BS/MS form.
  • You must apply for the term that immediately follows your completion of the bachelor's degree. For example, if you plan to graduate with your Bachelor of Science (BS) in Spring 2025, and start your graduate program in Fall 2025, you should submit your graduate application for the CS graduate program (via the combined BS/MS program under the "Educational Intent" section) in Fall 2024.

For admission deadlines, see the Prospective Student page e .

Combined BS/MS form and Graduate Application Submission Windows

Summary: in your third-to-last or second-to-last semester, register for three 400-level CMSC courses and submit the Combined BS/MS form to the CS Graduate Office. Once approved by UMD's Graduate Office, you may submit a graduation application. Please see the charts below for clarification.

  • Start Date: After the schedule adjustment period
  • End Date: One week before the semester ends
  • For students applying for Spring term admission, be aware that the application cut-off is one week before the Spring term admission application deadline. For the current academic year, this deadline is September 29th.

* Schedule adjustment period

* Note: You may submit your Combined BS/MS form in either the spring or fall semester, but you can only submit a graduate application in the fall semester. If you plan to graduate in a spring semester, please ensure that your Combined BS/MS form is submitted and approved in a previous spring or fall semester before applying to the graduate program in your last fall semester.

Guidelines & Regulations

Course selection.

  • The Combined form can only be used for courses in the current semester. Courses from previous semesters will not be approved retroactively.  Please plan to take all of your required BS/MS courses in a single semester.
  • Changes to courses on your Combined BS/MS form for dual credit are final. You cannot revise them later.
  • List only the courses in which you are currently enrolled on the Combined BS/MS form
  • The Combined BS/MS form submission window is opened only after the schedule adjustment period to mitigate issues related to form revisions.
  • Typically, students list two 400-level CMSC courses (three if approved) and one additional 400-level or higher course from MATH, STAT, AMSC etc.
  • Fall Graduates only: students in their final semester who intend to apply for the Combined BS/MS program may still proceed with their applications; however, they are restricted to listing only those CMSC or AMST/MATH/STAT courses for which they are registered in in their final semester.
  • Taking 9 double-counted credits doesn't assure MS completion within one year post-BS. Before the start of your final year, please reach out to your assigned academic advisor about the option of enrolling in a 400- or 600-800-level CMSC or /AMSC/MATH/STAT course for graduate credit only. If approved, you'll need to complete a Graduate Credit Permission form . Your assigned academic advisor will provide further details on this process.

Application Limitations

  • Students rejected from the dual Bachelor's/Master's program can only apply for the traditional Master of Science in future application cycles.

Deferments & Leaves

  • Admitted students cannot defer their Master's program start. Students may request a Leave of Absence in their first year in the Master's program. The only reasons combined B/M students may take a semester/year off immediately after earning the bachelor's degree are: childbirth, adoption, serious health condition, caring for incapacitated dependents, financial hardship, and military service (i.e., allowed reasons under the Graduate School's Leave of Absence policy).

Commencement Delays

  • If students don't start their Master's program immediately after finishing their Bachelor's degree, any credits that were set to count for both degrees will only apply to the Bachelor's degree. The Combined BS/MS Form cannot be approved retroactively once the student has entered graduate studies.

The University of Utah, in general, offers many social, recreational , and cultural events on campus, and, as a member of  PAC-12 , we boast several very successful  athletics programs . Campus life is packed with concerts, plays, festivals and sporting events. Utah’s museums of Fine Arts and Natural History are located on campus, as is the state’s arboretum and gardens . The University of Utah has recreational facilities for racquetball, handball, golf, basketball, tennis (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, gymnastics, squash, weight training and numerous other sports. Three indoor pools assure access to swimming year-round. The field house has an indoor track, courts for tennis and other racquet sports, as well as exercise areas, whirlpools and saunas. Campus Recreation offers organized programs and inexpensive rental equipment for popular off-campus outdoor activities.

The chemical engineering department, specifically, aims to graduate students who leave our program richer in culture and friends, as well as knowledge and skill. We see the diversity in our department as an important ingredient to our success and hope to offer a respectful and welcoming community to all students.

The University of Utah offers students a unique environment. Located on the foothills of Salt Lake City, we are near a vibrant and economically healthy metropolis.  Salt Lake City  is the cultural and sports center of the vast intermountain region between the Sierras and the Rockies. It supports professional groups such as the  Utah Symphony ,  Ballet West , two modern dance companies and the  Utah Opera Company . Salt Lake is also home of the NBA’s  Utah Jazz  and the  Bees Baseball Team . An international film festival, the  Sundance Film Festival , takes place annually in  Park City , and several major arts and entertainment festivals are annual local traditions.

However, we are also surrounded by some of the world’s most stunning natural landscapes and exciting recreational opportunities. As any experienced snow boarder or skier would know, our mountains are world renown and the U’s campus is just minutes from the slopes. Winter recreation facilities surrounding and within our campus are amongst the best in the world, due in part to the 2002 Olympics, which were hosted in Salt Lake City. Spring through fall, our nearby mountains offer scenic hiking trails, challenging rock climbing routes, and many opportunities for stream and lake fishing. A short drive south and you may find yourself in the gorgeous solitude of one of our many  national parks , surrounded by landscapes that are without equal.

Whether you prefer to your recreation in the city or in the country, the University of Utah has much to offer.

Degrees Offered

PhD in Chemical Engineering

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering represents scholarly achievement demonstrated by independent research. A Ph.D. candidate must be able to demonstrate competence in the subject matter of his or her field. Of major importance to the Ph.D. degree is the student’s research, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and dissertation, which must provide new and significant contribution to knowledge in the student’s field. The intellectual and creative matter presented in the dissertation must meet the standards of the department and university. Typically, successful completion of a PhD degree requires five years for students entering the program with a Bachelors degree. The maximum allowable time for completion of the PhD degree is seven years.

A summary of steps towards the PhD degree is shown below. (Click image to download a PDF version.)

PhD Program Overview - Click for a PDF version

Other Requirements

In addition to the steps shown above, PhD students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Publish a minimum of two first-author articles in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research at local and national conferences
  • Participate in graduate seminars and symposia
  • Serve as a teaching assistant for two chemical engineering courses

For additional details, please refer to the Gradaute Handbook .

MS in Chemical Engineering

The Master of Science degree allows students an opportunity to earn an advanced degree in chemical engineering in less time and with lower research intensity than the PhD degree. Students will develop a deeper understanding of core principles of chemical engineering and will learn the art of independent research. The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering degree can be a good springboard for a PhD, since the course requirements for the two degrees are similar.

The University of Utah Department of Chemical Engineering offers several options for students to earn a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering degree:

  • Coursework-Based track* : This self-funded option provides an opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge of chemical engineering subjects through coursework. Students must complete 30 credit hours of core and elective engineering courses with an average GPA of 3.3 to receive their degree. This track can usually be completed in 16 to 24 months. Students on this track are responsible for covering all costs for the degree.
  • Project-Based track* : Under this self-funded track, students perform an independent, self-directed project chosen either through consultation with their supervisory committee or through their employer. The project is worth six credit hours and students take 24 additional core and elective credit hours. Completing the degree involves an oral defense of the project before the supervisory committee. This track can usually be completed in 16 to 24 months. Students on this track are responsible for covering all costs for the degree.

* Students can switch between the coursework- and project-based non-thesis tracks at any time during their degree.

In addition to these standalone Masters programs, the Department of Chemical Engineering, in collaboration with the David Eccles School of Business, offers a dual MBA and MS in Chemical Engineering program. Moreover, current University of Utah chemical engineering undergraduates (freshmen-juniors) are encouraged to consider the department’s dual BS/MS in Chemical Engineering program.

Masters Program Overview

Masters in Chemical Engineering Overview - Click for PDF version

In addition to the steps shown above, Masters students on the thesis-based track are expected to fulfill the following requirements:

  • Publish a minimum of one first-author article in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Serve as a teaching assistant for one chemical engineering course

For additional details, please refer to the Gradaute Handbook !

Combined BS/MS in Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers a combined BS/MS degree program for current ChE undergraduate students at the University of Utah. The program is designed to expedite the completion of both the undergraduate and graduate degrees and will provide students an opportunity to participate in graduate research and advanced engineering coursework.

Degree Requirements

Students in the BS/MS program have a reduced technical elective requirement (6 hours) for obtaining their BS degree and may begin working towards their MS degree concurrently by enrolling in graduate-level engineering courses. The program may be completed with only 1 additional year compared to the BS degree, which is 1 year less than obtaining the degrees sequentially.

The MS degree has 2 tracks: coursework and project-based. Both tracks have a 30 credit hour requirement and the Graduate Handbook has detailed information on the specifics of the degree requirements. In the project-based track, students can take up to 6 credit hours of CH EN 6253 – Advanced Design Project while working with a faculty member on a research project. Students must form a committee and defend their project at the conclusion of their research to obtain the MS degree. The project-based track is an excellent approach to gain exposure to graduate level research prior to committing to a doctoral program.

Applying for the combined BS/MS degree

Students interested in the combined BS/MS degree apply during the spring semester of their junior year (i.e., when enrolled in Mass Transfer, CH EN 3603). Students with a cumulative GPA >3.6 are eligible to apply for the program, and students with a >3.3 GPA may apply with a support letter from a chemical engineering faculty member. The application deadline is May 1. Because the BS and MS degrees are conferred at the same time, the BS/MS program is not open to international students since the Form I-20 does not permit two concurrent careers.

Ready to get started? Please fill out the application and candidacy forms:

  • BS/MS Application (PDF)
  • BS/MS Candidacy Form (PDF)

More information:

For more information about the combined BS/MS degree, including a recommended schedule of courses, students should consult the Undergraduate Student Handbook . Full MS program degree requirements are found in the Graduate Handbook .

Section 16: MS and PhD Application & Admission Requirements

16.1 general information.

Students can apply to Biomedical Engineering (BME) MS and PhD programs for Autumn and less commonly, for Spring Semester. Below are the application deadlines and requirements. (Applicants to the BS/MS program, see section 12. Applicants to the MD/PhD - MSTP, see Section 11.)

16.2 Application Deadlines

For Autumn – August   For admission & fellowship consideration for PhD & MD/PhD and admission to MS Nov 30    International applicants for fellowship consideration Dec 15    Domestic applicants for fellowship consideration May 1      Last-minute deadline for general admission   For Spring – January   For admission to MS or PhD Oct 15     Recommended for all, required for International applicants Last-minute deadline for all general admission

Q: When should I visit Ohio State?

BME works closely with the College of Engineering Office of Graduate Recruitment and Support on annual events such as the Graduate Engineering Open House (GEOH) and participates with the university’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion on their Graduate and Professional Student Recruitment Initiative (GPS) . Some travel stipends available. Visit their pages to find out how to attend or apply.

16.3 Basics of Filing the Application

Applicants must submit the application, fee, and all required materials by the deadlines above in order for the application to be considered for admission to BME graduate programs.

There are two main offices involved in processing applications: The Ohio State University Office of Graduate Admissions and the BME Graduate Studies Office. The Graduate Studies Office within BME works with the University’s Graduate Admissions Office application system to manage the application process and provide assistance.

The following materials must be submitted to the Ohio State Office of Graduate Admissions via the online application system:

  • Graduate school application
  • Nonrefundable application fee: $60.00 for domestic applicants; $70.00 for international applicants
  • Official transcripts from all universities attended (exception: Ohio State students do not need to provide Ohio State transcripts but must provide transcripts for transfer work done at a separate institution)
  • Official TOEFL score for international applicants
  • A statement of purpose of no more than 2 pages describing your career goals, research interests and experience, desired program of study, etc. (Please see writing prompt ideas on the next page.)
  • Three letters of recommendation, preferably from academic sources (exception: Ohio State BME BS applying to the non-thesis MS may submit 2 from Ohio State BME)
  • Abstract of the MS thesis (if you are applying to the PhD and have earned an MS degree) or a list of research experiences, conference presentations, or publications, if you have any
  • CV or Resume

If the Graduate Admissions Office tips don’t help, here are a few more:

16.4 things to do before and during the application process:.

The Biomedical Engineering Graduate Studies Committee (BMEGSC) meets roughly once per month to review applications that have been filed with Ohio State’s Office of Graduate Admissions. Decision times vary depending on time of the year, funding availability, and faculty recruitment needs.

As you may have discovered, admission philosophies and practices differ among programs and departments, even within the same university. In BME, we aim for the long-term success of PhD students and therefore emphasize a research interest and funding match between the applicant and the faculty advisor. We recommend that all PhD applicants explore the research areas and faculty on our website and contact them directly about their interest and availability to advise and/or fund new graduate students. PhD applicants with a strong academic background and a solid research and funding match with Ohio State faculty will receive a high priority for admission and fellowship nomination. All PhD applicants are encouraged to introduce themselves to and connect with potential faculty advisors. Email is often the best way to reach faculty .

The MS is a self-funded degree. However, those interested in pursuing research toward a thesis will want to make sure there are faculty doing research in your area of interest. This step is not as necessary for non-thesis MS students for whom the program is course-based.

16.5 How and When the BMEGSC Makes Admission Decisions

Once a complete application is received, the BMEGSC will make your application information available to all BME faculty. Some recruiting faculty members are able to offer Graduate Research Associateships (GRAs): positions for which students do lab tasks and activities in exchange for tuition and a stipend. Recruiting faculty also assist the BMEGSC in nominating applications in university- and college-wide fellowship (i.e., scholarship) competitions that can pay tuition and a stipend if awarded. An early and complete application, along with a good match with faculty research, is critical to being nominated in fellowship competitions.

Once the BMEGSC learns the results of fellowship competitions (typically during February and March) we will begin to make admission offers and invite recruited students for campus visits (often with a travel stipend). All admission considerations happen between January and April 15 th , the nationally agreed upon date by which most schools require an acceptance decision. Applicants are encouraged to stay in touch with faculty and BME graduate studies office staff during this time period and to let us know if we can help with enrollment decisions.

Things to think about when drafting your statement of purpose

  • What are your most significant attributes? How do you think these attributes will contribute to your success in the degree program(s) to which you are applying (non-thesis MS or thesis MS or PhD)? Describe one instance in which you have used these attributes to accomplish your goals.
  • Describe succinctly a personal or academic challenge (small or large) you have faced and how you successfully handled this challenge. What did you learn? What would you do differently?
  • For PhD or thesis-MS applicants only: Summarize highlights of your research experience (including methods, lab or company, advisor, publications, conference presentations, etc.); tell us about a successful research experience (which may include some failures); and describe your process for progressing in or completing your research.
  • After reading faculty research interests on the BME Department website, please name the specific areas and faculty with whom you would like to work and explain why.
  • State your long-term career goals. How does earning your degree of choice (non-thesis MS or thesis-MS or PhD) assist with achieving these goals?

16.6 Required Application Background

Most applicants to the MS or PhD programs have an engineering background. A list of Required Background Courses for Non-engineers is available in the Appendix I of this handbook. Note that applicants typically are not considered for admission without earning at least a 3.0/4.0 in most of the required background courses, with an emphasis on math through differential equations. Our past experiences have confirmed that an engineering background is essential for success in a graduate-level engineering program; lesser preparation could jeopardize successful completion of the degree.

16.7 Admission Requirements

Admission to The Ohio State University Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program is based in part on several university requirements:

  • The equivalent of a four-year bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited college or university, earned by the expected date of entry into your graduate program. Students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline are expected to take the courses necessary to acquire an appropriate engineering background before applying. Students may apply directly to the PhD without a master’s degree.
  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale or equivalent ) for the last bachelor's degree earned. Although this is the minimum for consideration by the university’s Graduate School, prospective students should be aware that the average GPA of admitted BME students may be higher.
  • A minimum of 3.3 cumulative point-hour ratio or GPA (on the 4.0 scale or equivalent ) in all previous graduate work. This is the GPA required for an applicant to be considered for admission. In general, applicants for the PhD program are expected to have earned a higher cumulative point-hour ratio than is expected of applicants for the MS degree.
  • For applicants whose native language is not English, who have been educated primarily outside of the U.S., or who have held U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee status for less than one year from the first term of enrollment: A minimum score of 19 on each section of the paper-based TOEFL; 79 on the Internet Based TOEFL or TOEFL Special Home Edition; or 7.0 on the IELTS exam or IELTS Indicator. ( See exemptions and Duolingo exceptions for 2021 applicants. )
  • An abstract of the MS thesis/project or similar published work, when available, is required of PhD applicants. The requirement may be waived for students who are applying directly to the PhD from a bachelor’s degree program.

16.8 Application Advice & Events

Applicants may apply directly to the PhD program without a master’s degree; we admit directly to PhD program.

In very rare circumstances, the BMEGSC may petition the Graduate School to request conditional admission for an applicant not meeting the 3.0/4.0 university GPA cut. This is an option used for applicants demonstrating outstanding achievement amidst extenuating circumstances, with other mitigating factors and experience. If approved by the Graduate School, a student would need to meet conditions set forth by them in the first semester before an official offer of admission could be made.

Choose recommenders who can speak to your academic and research skills: professors and research supervisors are preferred to academic advisors or employers, but there can always be exceptions for a good letter of reference.
