When the British left India, there were about 565 princely states that had gained independence and were not in the Union of India at that time. Using his ability or military capability, Sardar Patel did a commendable job of uniting these states with the Union of India. He was very clear in his aim that the map of India should be united from its beginning to the end.

When Narendra Modi was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he had flagged off a project for the construction of an 182 meter statue of Sardar Patel. Subsequently, when he became the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued orders to celebrate National Unity Day in 2014. This day should be celebrated only on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel on 31st October.

Although Sardar Patel was a well-known freedom fighter, his role as an administrator during and after India’s independence has been much more significant. When the British left India, about 565 independent princely states were liberated. Sardar Patel, who also held the charge of Home Minister at that time, persuaded these states to join the Union of India.

He made every effort – threatening some and even persuading many with military action if necessary. He was not ready to make any compromise in his every effort to fulfill his vision and dream of a united India. It was Sardar Patel’s determination on a united India that made him the “Iron Man” of India.

Essay on National Unity Day

Essay on National Unity Day in English | Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Essay

Essay on national unity day.

National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is a significant observance in India that celebrates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This day is dedicated to honoring the “Iron Man of India,” who played a pivotal role in uniting the various princely states into a single, unified nation. National Unity Day is not just a tribute to Patel but also a reminder of the importance of unity and integration in a diverse and pluralistic country like India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. He was a prominent leader during the Indian independence movement and a key figure in post-independence India. Patel’s legacy is particularly significant in the context of national unity because of his relentless efforts to bring together the more than 560 princely states that existed in India after gaining independence from British colonial rule.

At the time of India’s independence in 1947, the country was a patchwork of territories and princely states, each with its own rulers and governance systems. The integration of these states into a unified India was a monumental task that required exceptional diplomatic skills, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment. This is where Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel emerged as the “Iron Man” who worked tirelessly to unite the nation.

In 1947, Patel was appointed as India’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs. His responsibilities included the monumental task of persuading the princely states to join the newly formed Indian Union. Patel used a combination of diplomacy, persuasion, and even coercion when necessary to bring the princely states into the fold of the Indian Republic.

One of the most notable achievements of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the successful integration of the princely state of Hyderabad, which was the largest and most challenging integration effort. It was a complex operation that involved military action, but Patel’s determination and decisiveness ensured that Hyderabad, along with many other princely states, became part of India.

National Unity Day is celebrated on October 31st every year to commemorate Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary and to recognize his invaluable contribution to nation-building. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, integrity, and the strength that comes from being a diverse yet harmonious nation.

To understand the significance of National Unity Day , it is essential to explore the following key aspects:

  • Patel’s vision for a united and strong India was rooted in his unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy and justice.
  • He firmly believed that a divided India could not achieve its full potential and that unity was the bedrock of a prosperous and harmonious nation.

2. Integration of Princely States:

  • After India’s independence in 1947, there were over 560 princely states, each with its own ruler.
  • Patel’s diplomatic skills and resolute efforts led to the successful integration of these princely states into the Indian Union.
  • This consolidation of territories laid the foundation for a united and sovereign India.

3. Importance of Unity in Diversity:

  • India is known for its diversity in terms of culture, language, religion, and traditions.
  • National Unity Day serves as a reminder that this diversity is a source of strength and richness for the nation.
  • It encourages the idea of unity in diversity, where people from various backgrounds coexist harmoniously.

4. The Role of Youth in Promoting Unity:

  • The youth of India play a crucial role in maintaining and promoting national unity.
  • They are the torchbearers of the future and can contribute to the country’s development by fostering unity and tolerance.

5. Commemorative Activities on National Unity Day:

This day should be celebrated on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel on 31st October.

Observation

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated all over the country with extraordinary zeal and enthusiasm. People everywhere pay tribute to the ‘Iron Man of India’ and remember his contribution to a politically integrated India.

The day also holds special significance for the Indian Administrative Services as the person who introduced the “modern All India Service System” was Sardar Patel, formerly known as the Indian Civil Service.

Officers of the Indian Administrative Services gather in the State Secretariat and all other relevant places to pay their respects by remembering Sardar Patel as the ‘Patron Saint of the Civil Servants of India’.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India. He was the brain behind the political integration of India. Celebrating his birthday as World Unity Day has two important purposes – firstly to call Sardar Patel the Iron Man of India and secondly to remind us of our integration and unity. This strengthens our resolve for a unified India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday is an occasion to remember his efforts and honor his desire and vision for a united India. He was not only a great freedom fighter but also a great administrator who oversaw the partition of India-Pakistan and the political integration of India.

Essay 3 (600 words)

National Unity Day is celebrated every year on 31 October on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was an Indian statesman, statesman, and freedom fighter who played an important role in the political integration of India.

Tribute to Sardar Patel

Sardar Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India, who was instrumental in integrating small states into the Indian Union. Before independence, he was a noted social worker and freedom fighter associated with the Indian National Congress. He led the Satyagraha in Gujarat and was also active in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement.

His passion for a politically and culturally integrated India is celebrated on his birth anniversary as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.

The decision to celebrate Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary on October 31, every year as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, was taken in 2014 by the Ministry of Home Affairs through an official notification.

The official statement of the ministry said that “the observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas will provide an opportunity to re-establish our country’s inherent strength and resilience in the face of real and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country”. “

In 2014, on the 139th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, programs were organized at many places. Run for Unity was organized in major cities like Delhi, Nagpur and Mumbai. Many politicians and sports persons took part in the celebrations. The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi along with the Vice President, Venkaiah Naidu pays tribute to Sardar Patel at Patel Chowk in New Delhi.

Commemoration programs were also organized in Indian Embassies around the world. People honored Sardar Patel and remembered his contribution in the integration of India.

Celebrations and Activities

Many events are organized on National Unity Day in educational institutions, schools, government offices and other places. Both the Central and State Governments issue guidelines in this regard to the concerned organizations.

Special commemoration programs are organized in schools, in which children pay respect to Sardar Patel and speak a few words about his wish and resolve for a politically unified India.

The 182 meter tall statue of Sardar Patel in Gujarat was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October 2018. It is located 150 km from Surat and is facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam. Thousands of people from different parts of India visit the statue and museum on Rashtriya Ekta Diwas to pay respect to Sardar Patel.

In Parliament, tributes are paid to Sardar Patel by the members of the ruling party as well as the opposition.

Sardar Patel was the unifier of India who was single-handedly responsible for its political integration. If he had not had a disjointed attitude for a united India, we might not have been united even today. National Unity Day is a tribute to the Iron Man of India and his resolve.
