Program length: Two semesters, full-time, September to May (please see note below about part-time study)

Degree awarded: Master of Arts in Political Science

Concentrations:  American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory (for detail about each concentration, see Fields of Study on this site).

Dissertation or thesis: No

Application deadline for Fall 2024 Admission : February 8, 2024

The Master of Arts program is a one-year full-time program designed for students seeking advanced academic training in political science and political science research methods. Students specialize in one of four concentrations--American politics, comparative politics, international relations, or political theory--and master a qualitative and/or quantitative research method of their choosing.

The program aims to prepare students with the theoretical and applied expertise needed to advance in both academic and non-academic professions. For many students, the program functions as a precursor to Ph.D. study. The program attracts students from around the world of diverse backgrounds, ages, and experience levels, and connects them with leading professors in the field.

There are 5 strengths of the program :

  • Research skills: the program offers the opportunity to train in both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Writing skills : the program trains students in scholarly writing by requiring that students write at least two long research papers during the year.
  • Advanced knowledge of state of the art political science: through the proseminar and other PhD level courses, the students learn about recent cutting-edge political science research as well as the literature to which they contribute. Furthermore, several workshops during the week bring to the department presentation of work in progress of faculty from all around the US and the world. Students are encouraged to attend and learn from them as well.
  • Flexibility: the students can tailor the programs around their research interest. Students are also allowed to take a few courses outside the department to develop an interdisciplinary interest in a topic or interest.
  • Personalized advising: the students receive individualized attention through both the formal advising channel with the MA Director, MA graduate advisor and sub-field faculty advisors, but also through lunch with faculties, interviews with faculty and other workshops or social events. The cohort is small enough (around 25-26) to allow for this level of attention.

Good standing

Students in a master’s program in the Graduate School must maintain good  academic standing  in the degree program, good  administrative standing  in the Graduate School, and continued good  progress toward the degree  each semester.

Academic standing

Good academic standing for M.A. students includes but is not limited to:

  • Maintaining consistent contact with their advisor
  • Maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0*
  • Holding no more than one mark of Incomplete at any given time
  • Meeting other criteria specified by the department

Any questions should be directed to the M.A. Program Director.

*The cumulative GPA is derived from all courses in which a student has registered and received a grade, except when the student takes a course again after receiving an F. In such cases, the F received for the original iteration does not count toward the GPA.

Administrative standing

Students are expected to comply with all applicable administrative policies and procedures of the university, including those of the  Columbia Libraries ,  University Apartment Housing , and the  Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards , as well as the regulations described in  Essential Policies for the Columbia Community

Progress and time to the M.A. degree

Students are expected to complete the M.A. in political science in two semesters of full-time study.

M.A. students are advised by two members of the department's faculty: the Director of the M.A. program and another faculty member from the student's research area of interest. Students may consult both advisers for academic planning and support but still must see the M.A. director for guidance regarding departmental requirements and regulations.

Registration

Registration in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences  is a two-part process that consists of 1) registering for courses and 2) registering for a residence category. All students must complete both parts of the registration process.

  • Students must register in each fall and spring semester until all degree requirements have been completed or until the time-to-degree limit has been reached.
  • The M.A. in political science requires the completion of two Residence Units. Students are expected to complete all requirements in two consecutive semesters of study.
  • Enrollment is the completion of the registration process and affords the full rights and privileges of student status.

M.A. Requirements Checklist

Students in the M.A. program must complete (within one academic year) a minimum of eight graduate-level political science courses for a total of at least 30 points, including:

  • The M.A. Proseminar (POLS GR5000)
  • Two political science colloquia or seminars (8000- or 9000-level courses) or, with prior approval of the Director of the M.A. program, other graduate political science courses that include the requirement of writing a research paper (approximately longer than 15 pages)
  • Five electives: two elective courses must be taken within the political science department (courses listed as POLS or cross-listed) and three may be taken outside the department in related fields with prior approval of the Director of the M.A. program; fill out a  petition  form to be sent to the Director of the M.A. program and Graduate Program Coordinator )

The thesis will be a heavily researched academic work consisting of 10,000-15,000 words dealing with an important and timely topic in politics related to a student’s chosen concentration. The thesis should demonstrate that a student has a sufficient command of literatures and arguments pertaining to the chosen topic. Students are required to notify the thesis seminar course instructor at the initiation of research for the master’s thesis and register for the MA thesis course. In conjunction with the MA advisor and the thesis seminar instructor, students will choose a faculty thesis supervisor. Once a thesis topic and supervisor are designated, the director of MA program must approve changes to them.

Foreign Language Requirement

Students must demonstrate proficiency in one language other than English or, with permission of the director of the MA program, in statistics. Students demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language by passing the GSAS foreign language proficiency examination or by completing an intermediate-level foreign language course with a grade of B or better. Students demonstrate proficiency in statistics by completing POL-GA 2127 Intro to Quantitative Political Analysis II , with a grade of B or better.

Sample Plan of Study

Learning outcomes.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will develop:

  • A familiarity and knowledge of the existing political science literature in their subfield of study. This goal is met through the core course requirements as well as the required courses in the student’s field of study. Assignments in core courses (whether examinations or literature reviews) are designed with this goal in mind. Finally, by the time the student is at the thesis writing stage, they should be able to demonstrate a sufficient command of the literature related to their thesis topic.
  • The ability to undertake research projects/papers. This includes identifying research questions, connecting their research to the existing literature, and developing and evaluating their argument. This skill is developed through research paper assignments in seminars and then culminates in the MA thesis seminar. In their master’s thesis, graduates undertake and complete independent research projects under the guidance of their thesis supervisor and the MA thesis seminar instructor.
  • A set of analytical and methodological skills that they can apply to political science research and beyond. Graduates will gain quantitative methodological skills through the quantitative methods course sequence. Graduates develop qualitative method and critical analysis skills through seminars. Subfield seminars and the MA Thesis Seminar heavily focus on the development of research design. Graduates ultimately apply and demonstrate these skills by analyzing data and/or qualitative information in their master’s thesis.
  • The ability to write and communicate clearly. Writing skill are developed throughout the student’s time in the program, through both research paper and shorter written assignments. The MA thesis seminar is writing intensive and emphasizes writing as a process; sections of the thesis are due throughout the semester and extensive feedback is given to the student. The expectation is that in their thesis, the student demonstrates their ability to present their research in a form suitable to the rules and conventions of the academic community. Finally, oral communication skills are fostered through in-class presentations.
  • Professional development through internships or research. Undertaking an internship provides graduates with practical experience in occupational fields related to political science. Graduates interested in academic careers gain experience through research assistantships or by undertaking an independent study under the supervision of a faculty member.

Download fresh assignments when revisiting previous year's courses from the IGNOU website, submit them on time, and take the term-end exams. Proper planning allows you to complete the program at your own pace.

IGNOU Online MA in Political Science Course Structure 2024

- The Open University system uses a credit system. - Each credit is equivalent to 30 hours of study. - This approach helps you in the academic commitment needed. - A maximum of 50% of the credits can be transferred within a program of study. - For example, an 8-credit course demands 240 hours of study, while a 4-credit course requires 120 hours. - You can decide how many courses to undertake annually based on the time you can allocate to your studies. - Credit transfers are possible between universities, but only for the same subject and at the same education level. - To successfully complete a course, you must pass both the assignments and the term-end examination, as well as any applicable project work.

Dr. Meghan Leonard presented a paper, “Gender, Race, and the Opinion Assignment Process on State Supreme Courts” at the Midwest Political Science Association Annual Meeting.

The paper, co-authored with Joseph Ross of Florida Gulf Coast University, asked if men and women chief justices assigned opinions differently when they have the power to do so. Noting the importance of calls to diversify the courts, this work examines if gender diversity on the courts leads to different outcomes.

Leonard and Ross find that generally men and women do not assign opinions differently except in cases relevant to the lived experiences of women, such as employment discrimination.
