My Grandmother English essay

My Grandmother English essay

My grandmother is eighty years old. But she is still active. She is very loving and good. She is very kind too. I can recall my childhood happily because of my grandmother. She loved me, advised me and made me happy by relating interesting stories and reciting poems.

I still love her, respect her and always try to be with her. There is no one else to share her ideas, happiness and sadness. I always try to make her happy as she did for me. Sometimes I crack jokes and sing songs. I help her in her religious activities.

Every evening I pluck flowers for her. I take her to the temple on Poya Days. She likes to read religious books. But now she reads books with some difficulty because her eyesight is poor. She always uses a pair of spectacles.

Essay on grandmother

Essay on Grandmother: ‘Have you ever wondered what the circumstances surrounding your family may have been in the absence of an elderly figure? How would your parents have asked for advice when making certain decisions? When your parents scolded you, who would have pampered you? We as children are closer to our grandparents, especially our grandmother than any member of our family. Grandmother teaches us how to love, respect, care, and become responsible in life. God has blessed us with grandmothers because of their caring love and respectful attitude towards everyone.’

Also Read: Essay on Parents

‘Grandmother wakes up early in the morning and takes care of family stuff. She manages all the house choirs and prepares breakfast for everyone. In her free time, she sits on her rocking chair on the balcony and murmurs songs. Everyone in the family respects her and reaches out to her for her guidance.’

‘This loving member of our family is getting old and she deserves the best care. Grandmother endured all the family’s sufferings and made sacrifices for everyone. They never discriminate against their grandchildren and have equal love for everyone, They are always there for us, guiding us through here decades of experience and teaching us the realities of life.’

We often get to hear that grandmothers are emotionally closer to their grandchildren than their parents. This is because we as children spend more time with them and they have a golden heart. Consider this example: our parents often say ‘no’ to things we like or want, but our grandmother always considers our interests and tries their best to keep us happy. They don’t want to see us sitting sad in a corner and feeling neglected.’

Woman dressed up, in wrinkles

The beautiful short woman, with a pale skin, having wrinkles all over the body, always left me stunned. How can one look so beautiful in a wrinkled skin? Well, the lady with the pale face, wrinkled skin, was wearing the most beautiful yellow traditional dress with the combination of orange; looks as if the sun and moon together spreading their brightness. Is my grandmother standing there? Oh! Yes it was my grandmother who was standing in the deep dark down of the night with all the brightness in her eyes.

My grandmother is one of the most beautiful women of my life. Who has not yet spent 100 years of life but of course 80 year of life span .My grandmother is full of religious thoughts. She believes that at attaining certain age a person should get involve himself or herself in god, in order to achieve salvation.

She believes that believing in god leads you to a certain positive energy which is further a basic principle of life. My grandmother do not believe the world of modernization as she believes that we are only copying the west countries and not trying to bring in our own method of modernization. She thinks the most important aspect of modernization is cleanliness, which India is far behind.

Table of Contents

Who is a grandmother?

To understand the literal meaning of a grandmother, she  is a mother of the    father, but the word ‘grandmother’ has a much better meaning in one’s life, she is not only the mother of the father, but yes a person who always loves, takes care of the entire family, always try to lead you on right paths. For men may come, men may go, but a grandmother should never let be gone.

 Old is gold

It is rightly said that ‘old is gold’ the line helps me to explain well that being old, beautiful young and what not, she; my grandmother has always proved to be more than a gold in our lives. I have some most beautiful childhood memories with her, from helping her in household chores to not letting her to be alone when everyone not at home.

I have spent the most beautiful moments of life with my grandmother; from fighting with the siblings to sleep with her, or to ask for extra token of money than others, crying for each other when one had to leave, to not letting her stand with anyone else and even today after my marriage though we do not live together but the bond which we share is above all.

I feel the most luckiest that my marriage could happen in front of my grandparents and their blessings. Only some people could fulfill this desire.

Her lessons were always a blessing!

my grandmother

She has always tried to teach me the world of practicality, where she has always told me, how being a woman I can deal my life smoothly and correctly. Often, I’d wonder how anyone could live so long without much expectation from life neither with much health problems.

Then I remember that ‘ dadi ’ once told me, my fitness mantra is keep going and keep working as much as possible. Working hard keeps bringing new energies in us, and we do not become lazy. My grandmother is fond of animals, and have always taught me that no one can be a better friend than an animal, they will always stand by you and never betray.

So, therefore my grandmother has one buffalo, a dog, a rabbit and lots of pigeons. With them she tries to spend her most of the time. I am always compelled by myself to think will I ever be able to achieve what my grandmother has achieved all this while. Of course it’s a No but, will always try and understand her lessons, as they have always led me out of my difficult situations.

We are here

Let’s let them know that we are always there whenever they need us, let’s let them know that they have always lived for us and they have done a lot for us. Now it’s our turn to fulfill their wishes, though they do not expect much, but only a little care, a little attention and lots of love is what all they need. And they will fill our life with lots of brightness and happiness.

It is said that when old people live with you one have more disciplined, controlled life without much problems. A much more organised life is being lived. It is the truth that god is present in this world, it is us who have to find him in the form our parents, grandparents and children.

And talking about my grandmother, she has always been a god like personality in my life. I do not want to thank her, indeed want to tell her that I love her the most. She has been one of the greatest inspiration of life and her blessings were always a support to my life.

My Grandmother Essay in English

My grandmother seems to be a funny lady, but she has a heart of gold. She has a big hump on the back.

She is bowed with age. I do not know her exact age, but I can guess that she must not be less than ninety.

She has gray hair and a wrinkled face. She has a thin body, but determined willpower that dwells in it.

She gets up early in the morning before sunset and prays to God. She has a cleft stick in her hand which supports her as she walks. She keeps hobbling about in the house.

She regularly goes to the temple even if she has to do so with great difficulty. She believes that if she neglects God, she will be punished in the next world.

Throughout the day and even till late at night, she keeps telling the beads. She also repeats God’s name continuously on her lips. That is why her lips are always moving.

She is unable to do household chores. Still, she tries her best to wash her own cups, plates, and glasses. We sometimes try to persuade her not to do so, but she does not listen to us. She believes that we must continue doing some work as long as we can.

She eats very frugal meals. She takes just one or two chapattis in the morning and one or two in the evening. She says that we should not eat too much. She does not like fast and junk food and not even bread, butter, jam, and eggs. She believes in a vegetarian diet. I think she has never tasted meat, egg, or fish in life.

She is very anxious about the welfare of all in the house. She keeps asking about my welfare in particular.

She is illiterate. Still, she tries to take interest in my studies. She does not like subjects like dancing, singing, and painting. She thinks that moral and religious lessons should be taught at school.

She does not like cinema, TV, and even newspapers. However, she prays for the welfare of all the creatures on earth and believes in service to man and God.

My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. As my paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young, I only remember a few memories of him. One thing I surely remember is he used to brush his teeth twice daily without fail. I adopted this habit and ever since I have been doing the same.

My maternal grandparents have been my true systems of support. I am lucky enough to have grown up around such inspirational people. My grandfather was a principal of a college, so he always emphasized the importance of education . He helped us with our homework when my parents were not available. I spent my vacations at their place as I enjoyed living with them.

Similarly, my grandparents always embraced me with open arms. They used to wait for every holiday for our arrival. My grandmother made delicious pickles and meals which we relished greatly. She taught me a few recipes too and tips and tricks that are very useful even today. I simply adore my grandparents for instilling good values in me and my parents and for giving us a safe space to grow up in.

My Grandparents Essay

  • Essay on My Grandparents

Grandparents are a tremendous blessing in our lives. They are responsible for the characteristics of our parents. Our parents are incredibly loving and take care of us in the same way that our grandparents did when they were young because of the upbringing they received. In addition, grandparents are a source of support.

100 Words Essay on My Grandparents

200 words essay on my grandparents, 500 words essay on my grandparents, my grandparents.

My Grandparents Essay

My grandparents are really special to me. I hold them in high esteem. They have done beyond and over for me. I will always be thankful for all of their help and kindness. They are the coolest people one will ever meet since they are updated with all knowledge about computers, technology, the internet, and other related topics.

They are the sort of individuals with whom you can discuss anything, even sensitive or confidential matters. In addition to being a buddy, my grandfather is also the finest teacher I have ever had. He has taught me all I know today. He made learning enjoyable for me and never gets upset with me when I mess up. He played a part in helping me realise my goals.

My grandparents are adorable, kind, wise, and understanding. They have always taught me to respect elders and taught me how to live an honourable and prosperous life. They serve as my role model and have always supported me in all aspects of my life. They give their insights that can direct me toward living a good life. I don't have to worry about anything because they are helping me make decisions. My grandparents are 70 and 73 years old, respectively. They still appear to be young in heart and do not appear to be as elderly as other persons their age. They read books, newspapers, and magazines frequently, which contributes to their strong general knowledge.

Why I Love Them

I feel really fortunate to have such kind, endearing, and special grandparents. Every day I learn a lot of new things. They serve as my inspirations. Therefore, they are older now, they still serve as the foundation of our family. I respect my grandparents because they instilled moral principles and ideals that have aided me in everyday life. They both take great care of their physical and mental well-being. They constantly practise yoga and meditation to stay active at their age. They have always cared about my health and urged me to live a healthy lifestyle.

My grandparents' personalities are fascinating. They were always an important role model for me. Throughout the day, they are energetic and active constantly. Everyone in our family adores them. They have a limitless affection for us. They frequently interact with others with a lot of love and caring.

My grandfather regularly takes early walks. He speedily crosses our neighbourhood park every morning as soon as he gets out of bed. He returns and settles down to read one of his favourite books on the lawn. My grandparents share their tales with me. I can never feel down when they are around. My grandparents were the ones who first instilled in me the value of comedy. They both significantly contributed to my character development, and I am grateful to have them in my life.

I seemed to have great luck growing up at my grandparents' home. Since I was a child, our family has lived with my grandparents. I only have a few recollections of my paternal grandpa because he went away when I was a very little child. He used to clean his teeth twice a day without fail. I developed this practice and have continued to do so ever since.

My real support systems have been my maternal grandparents. I am privileged to have been raised by such wonderful people. My grandpa constantly emphasised the value of education because he was a college principal. When my parents were away, he helped us with my homework.

Similarly, my grandparents greeted me with open arms every time me and family visited them. Every holiday, they used to wait for us to come. We loved the delicious dinners and pickles that my grandma cooked. She also taught me several recipes and helpful advice that I still use today. I appreciate my grandparents for teaching moral principles to both my parents and me and for providing a secure environment for us to grow up in.

I learned the fundamental principles of life from my grandparents. They have taught me the true meaning of goodness, love, and affection. They boosted my willpower and helped me become a better person. They are incredibly dear to me. And he has improved our life in so many different ways. I appreciate having them near me.

I Love My Grandparents

I never needed to form friends because my grandparents were my best friends. Thus I never felt the urge to do so. They protected me from my parents whenever I did something wrong. Together, we played many indoor and outdoor activities like cricket, Ludo, and hide and seek.

My granddad and I ride bikes around the neighbourhood and to the park. When I'm bored, he is always willing to play with me. He sings songs and gives me general advice. My grandmother is a positive person. She always smiles and is ready to make what I desire. I enjoy making jokes with them and getting pampered by them. My grandmother taught me how to behave appropriately and looked after me when I was ill. My grandfather buys all the foodstuffs I like.

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Grandmother’

10-sentence essay on ‘my grandmother’, short essay on ‘my grandmother’ for children, long paragraph on ‘my grandmother’ for kids, what your 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader will learn from the essay.

There is something strikingly comforting about the word grandmother for all of us; that caring and nurturing woman in our lives because of whom we had a wonderful childhood. Most children have the privilege of knowing their grandparents. While some kids are raised in joint families, some only see them during holidays. But in both cases, they are bound to have a special bond with their grandmothers. Expressing this bond in an essay on ‘My Grandmother’ is thus likely to be an easy and joyous experience for some kids, but some might need guidance. In this article, we will help your child with some helpful ideas and tips to write short and long essays on the topic. Let’s begin with the key points!

Most schools are likely to ask their first, second, and third graders to write an essay on ‘My Grandmother’. Check out these pointers on how to approach the topic:

  • For short, one-line essays on ‘My Grandmother’, write one-line facts about your grandmother, her role in the family, and the bond you share with her.
  • When writing short paragraph essays, talk about why your grandmother is special and all the fun activities you engage with her.
  • For longer essays on your grandmother, you can add more details about her life, such as her past in the family and some of her qualities. Continue with how she is important to your family and end with how she is a role model for everyone.

It is always a fun activity for first and second graders to write about their grandmothers, but writing an essay needs them to organise their thoughts before penning them down. Here are a few ideas to write a short 10-line essay on the topic:

  • My grandmother is the sweetest, most caring person in the world.
  • She has taken care of all of us since we were babies.
  • My grandmother knows all of my favourite food, favourite toys, and TV shows.
  • She is also an amazing cook. She prepares delicious meals every day.
  • Granny is seventy-five years old and has beautiful white hair.
  • My grandmother is the head of our family, and everybody listens to her because she has a lot of wisdom.
  • She loves watching TV and play with me during the evenings. We also go for walks every day in the neighbourhood.
  • Granny is a strong but kindhearted woman who wishes good things for everyone.
  • She takes care of me when I’m unwell, and knows all the right foods to make me feel better and strong.
  • My grandmother is also my best friend. I love her very much.

Kids can never run out of things to say about their grandmother. Here is a short essay to learn how to put your ideas together:

My grandmother is seventy years old. She is a very kind woman who has raised all of us since we were babies. My grandmother is the head of the house, and everybody respects her. She is the first person to wake me up every morning, and every night she tucks me in bed and reads me a bedtime story. In the mornings, she helps me get ready for school by helping me arrange my school bag in order and packing my lunch. She is also the person who helps me study in the evenings before sitting with me to watch cartoons.

My grandmother is a strong and pious woman. She says her beliefs give her strength. After sending me to school, she goes about her day helping my mother in the kitchen and maintaining the house. My grandmother is also an amazing cook. She knows old recipes for food that are delicious. My friends love to eat any dish that’s prepared by my grandmother. Every evening, she helps me change after I return from school. After her tea, we go for a walk in the colony and return home for snacks and homework. It is difficult for all of us to imagine our lives with her. She is the string that holds us together. I love her very much.

Children in class 3 can usually write longer essays by properly expressing themselves in written language. Here’s an example of how you can write an essay on the topic:

My grandmother is the most important person in our family. She is seventy years old and very healthy for her age. She inspires us to live a healthy lifestyle. She goes for a walk in the morning and evening to maintain remain fit. She eats healthy foods and rests when she feels the need. Her philosophy is that health is the greatest wealth. If one has health, everything else is achievable.

My grandmother is the head of our family. She raised my father under tough conditions to become a responsible person who is dependable and admired by all. My grandmother raised me too since I was a baby. She is an educated woman who served the government until she retired at 60 to spend time with us. Although she is strict about things sometimes, she is a kindhearted woman who wishes the best for everyone. My grandmother is a tough woman who is respected in our family and community. My grandfather always says that he is lucky to have her in his life as she is an inspiration for him.

My grandmother is a very calm and composed woman. She has a good judgment about the world. She never loses her temper. She has a very smart way of approaching challenges and often advises everyone in the family during tough times. Although she comes from an older generation, she tries to keep up with everything new. She can operate her smartphone without needing too much help as she is educated and can find her way. Whenever she needs help, she doesn’t mind asking for assistance from other people.

We feel lucky to have our grandmother in the family as she is the pillar of moral support for everyone. She keeps the family together and well in order. I wish to be just like my grandmother and respected in society when I grow up.

By writing an essay on ‘My Grandma’, children will learn the importance of grandparents and their role in their lives. Essay writing helps lay the foundation for expression through writing, and children will learn how to observe, recollect, and articulate their thoughts about their grandmothers. By being prepared for the topic, your child will easily write good essays in tests and exams.

To write a good essay, encourage your child to stick to the facts and elaborate upon how their grandma is important in everyone’s life. While most of the points to write about will come from your child’s own experience and observation, reading these short essays will help them explore more ideas and be prepared for their next essay writing assignment.

How I Learned to Love My Granddaughter Without Fear

my grandmother essay in english for class 7

T he phone call from my daughter in North Carolina came at six o’clock in the morning, unusually early for her. “I’m pregnant,” Maggie announced, her voice bubbling with delight.

From 1,600 miles away I put down my mug of smoky dark-roast coffee and gave a shout. Her news was the last thing I would have expected as I sat in my rented house in Albuquerque, watching roadrunners skitter over the xeriscaping in the front yard, stabbing at the dried mealworms I’d just put out for them.

Maggie and her husband, Jimmy, together for 11 years and married for eight, had been on the fence about having children. Four years into their marriage, they decided to try for a baby. But after years passed, they both assumed and then accepted it wasn’t going to happen.

Read More: What My Family Taught Me About Loneliness

I’d looked on with a mixture of curiosity and a small bit of envy as friends welcomed one grandchild after another. My oldest son, Liam, in his early 40s, was at the time unattached. I’d resigned myself to the possibility of never knowing that particular brand of joy, although I also couldn’t imagine what it would be like to actually be someone’s grandmother.

And yet, here I was, trying to wrap my head around the idea. I walked through the house, my brindle Boxer dogging my footsteps as I did a quick inventory of room after room. In the next couple of days, I began packing up my belongings and arranging for housing with dear friends back home.

During one of our phone calls, my daughter had asked, “What do you want your grandmother name to be?”

“I have absolutely no idea,” I confessed.

Meanwhile, I worked to tamp down a rising anxiety. My second child, Cooper, had been born 40 years ago with a heart defect. When he was 4 days old, he had closed-heart surgery to repair a coarctation of the aorta. What we didn’t know — what no one could have known then, with limited ability to see inside an infant’s heart — was there were other, more deadly defects hidden within, two holes in the wall separating the atria. When he was 6 weeks old, he died quietly at home in my arms as I held and rocked him, unaware he was slipping away from me.

When Cooper died, Liam was 2 1/2. To say I became an overly anxious mother would be an understatement. I monitored every bump and bruise, each sniffle and fever. Nightmares of childhood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses pushed their way into everyday activities. After all, I now knew that the worst was possible.

Then I became pregnant again. After Maggie was born, I slept with her on my stomach most nights, and when she finally transitioned to a crib, I’d go into her room in the morning, half-expecting to find she’d died.

The grip on my heart gradually released, though, as my healthy children grew into their wonderful selves with nothing more than the usual list of childhood maladies and injuries. And now here was my baby having a baby. My emotions roiled with wonder and excitement, but all of it was overshadowed by a deep, resonating dread.

My daughter sent me the first ultrasound photos of “Little Bean,” a nickname they’d given in the earliest days when a pregnancy app indicated the developing clump of cells was the size of a vanilla bean.

I peered at the mottled, blurry image of my grandchild at 8 weeks gestation. “What am I seeing?” I asked.

“Here,” she texted and sent a second photo, this one with a red arrow pointing to a small darkish blob with a hazy dot in it like a dandelion tuft. “The brighter spot is the heart,” she wrote.

my grandmother essay in english for class 7

I peered at the picture, trying to imagine the fuzzy image as a beating heart. Something in me broke open, then just as quickly slammed shut.

Some years before, during my tenure at the domestic-violence and rape crisis agency, a co-worker had asked if I’d mind holding her newborn while she attended a short meeting. I happily took her baby boy in my arms, cooing and grinning at him, and brought him into my office. Sinking into the chair, the first thing I did was check to make sure he was breathing, as easily as one might check to make sure his socks were still on. Hot tears of sorrow and anger spilled down my cheeks at my automatic reaction to holding an infant.

This is how trauma lives in the body, tentacled through our sense memory. So much of the terrible night my son died remains a blur. What I have recalled all too well is the cold stillness, the weight of his tiny form, and the shock of him being so utterly gone.

Little Bean turned out to be a girl and with the given name June. All ultrasounds and other tests revealed her to be developing as she should. But I couldn’t shake the sense of dread.

“So much could go wrong,” I worried aloud to a friend.

“And so much could go right,” was her loving response.

Maggie was induced early one morning, and labor progressed slowly over the course of the day. At 9:37 that night I witnessed the moment my daughter pushed her baby girl into the world, a 7 ½-lb. miracle with downy dark hair and an adorable button nose. My son-in-law said I should do the honors — the obstetrician handed me the scissors, and I cut the cord, severing June from the warm, liquid world of her mother’s womb, and officially welcoming her Earthside.

But after her first breath, the newborn cry, that plaintive, sharp wail all parents wait for, didn’t come. The nurses took June from my daughter’s arms and continued to rub and stimulate her as she blinked in the glare of the bright room, but her blood oxygen levels remained concerningly low.

“We’re going to take her to the nursery,” one of the nurses said. My son-in-law followed. My daughter, unable to leave the bed because of the epidural, looked at me from across the room.

A chest X-ray confirmed a suspected pneumothorax, a condition in which air leaks into the space between the lung and the chest. Because we live in a small town with a small hospital, June would need to be transported to an NICU an hour and a half away. Watching my daughter and son-in-law say a tearful goodbye to their newborn was one of the most wrenching scenes I’ve ever witnessed. The next morning my daughter was discharged, and I drove her to see her baby girl at the hospital where my son-in-law already was.

The neonatal specialist assured them that the small hole in her lung would likely heal on its own, and three days later they brought June home. “Just forget this happened,” the doctor said. All signs pointed to complete health.

But I was in a tailspin that I couldn’t seem to pull out of.

Those first weeks I’d come to their house on Friday, taking charge of June at midnight after my daughter nursed her, and giving her the 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. bottles, watching her mouth as she suckled, stroking her soft skin. Did I feel like her grandmother? I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to feel. Friends had described a dizzying happiness at being “in the best club ever.”

What I felt too much of was terror, deathly afraid of the small bundle I held, continually monitoring her rosebud lips for signs of a bluish tint, watching to make sure her chest was rising and falling, panicking when it seemed too long between breaths. The urge to tumble helplessly in love with my granddaughter was in full battle with the freshly resurfaced memories of the night my son died. I kept my fears to myself, not wanting to foist my unease on my already traumatized daughter and son-in-law, who were struggling to return to the normalcy of welcoming this new baby into their lives after her scary start.

One afternoon, talking on the phone with a friend while driving in town, I heard myself say, “The doctors assured them the hole in her heart would heal.” There was a stunned silence as I realized what I’d said. “I mean her lung,” I said and hung up, pulling into a grocery-store parking lot where I sat with my face in my hands, weeping. In that moment, I knew I had a choice — release the dark grief or risk missing one of the most light-filled times of my life.

“That was that baby,” I told myself. “This baby doesn’t have any holes in her heart. This baby is fine.” I offered myself a mantra to try. “That was then, this is now.” Whenever the old trepidation would rise, I’d repeat the words, reminding myself of the distance in years and reality between the death of my son and the life of this sweet, healthy baby girl. Gradually, my heart unwound.

One afternoon, while my daughter napped in the next room, I snuggled little June close and rocked her. I leaned down to listen to the sound of her quiet breathing, this time not from fear but wonder. She looked up at me with deep blue eyes rimmed with dark lashes and stared as if memorizing my face. Unable to look away, I let her hold me in the power of her wide-open gaze.

“The brighter spot is the heart,” my daughter had written to me all those months ago, and now baby June and I sat basking in the light of a love big enough to hold it all — yesterday’s grief, today’s joy, and all the beautiful and uncertain tomorrows.

Outside, a soft breeze blew, and a shard of sunlight shot through the trees. I kissed my granddaughter’s forehead and began to sing.

Joseph Epstein, conservative provocateur, tells his life story in full

In two new books, the longtime essayist and culture warrior shows off his wry observations about himself and the world

my grandmother essay in english for class 7

Humorous, common-sensical, temperamentally conservative, Joseph Epstein may be the best familiar — that is casual, personal — essayist of the last half-century. Not, as he might point out, that there’s a lot of competition. Though occasionally a scourge of modern society’s errancies, Epstein sees himself as essentially a serious reader and “a hedonist of the intellect.” His writing is playful and bookish, the reflections of a wry observer alternately amused and appalled by the world’s never-ending carnival.

Now 87, Epstein has just published his autobiography, “ Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life: Especially if You’ve Had a Lucky Life ,” in tandem with “ Familiarity Breeds Content: New and Selected Essays .” This pair of books brings the Epstein oeuvre up to around 30 volumes of sophisticated literary entertainment. While there are some short-story collections (“The Goldin Boys,” “Fabulous Small Jews”), all the other books focus on writers, observations on American life, and topics as various as ambition, envy, snobbery, friendship, charm and gossip. For the record, let me add that I own 14 volumes of Epstein’s views and reviews and would like to own them all.

Little wonder, then, that Epstein’s idea of a good time is an afternoon spent hunched over Herodotus’s “Histories,” Marguerite Yourcenar’s “Memoirs of Hadrian” or almost anything by Henry James, with an occasional break to enjoy the latest issue of one of the magazines he subscribes to. In his younger days, there were as many as 25, and most of them probably featured Epstein’s literary journalism at one time or another. In the case of Commentary, he has been contributing pieces for more than 60 years.

As Epstein tells it, no one would have predicted this sort of intellectual life for a kid from Chicago whose main interests while growing up were sports, hanging out, smoking Lucky Strikes and sex. A lackadaisical C student, Myron Joseph Epstein placed 169th in a high school graduating class of 213. Still, he did go on to college — the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign — because that’s what was expected of a son from an upper-middle-class Jewish family. But Urbana-Champaign wasn’t a good fit for a jokester and slacker: As he points out, the president of his college fraternity “had all the playfulness of a member of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers.” No matter. Caught peddling stolen copies of an upcoming accounting exam for $5 a pop, Epstein was summarily expelled.

Fortunately, our lad had already applied for a transfer to the University of Chicago, to which he was admitted the next fall. Given his record, this shows a surprising laxity of standards by that distinguished institution, but for Epstein the move was life-changing. In short order, he underwent a spiritual conversion from good ol’ boy to European intellectual in the making. In the years to come, he would count the novelist Saul Bellow and the sociologist Edward Shils among his close friends, edit the American Scholar, and teach at Northwestern University. His students, he recalls, were “good at school, a skill without any necessary carry-over, like being good at pole-vaulting or playing the harmonica.”

Note the edge to that remark. While “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” is nostalgia-laden, there’s a hard nut at its center. Epstein feels utter contempt for our nation’s “radical change from a traditionally moral culture to a therapeutic one.” As he explains: “Our parents’ culture and that which came long before them was about the formation of character; the therapeutic culture was about achieving happiness. The former was about courage and honor, the latter about self-esteem and freedom from stress.” This view of America’s current ethos may come across as curmudgeonly and reductionist, but many readers — whatever their political and cultural leanings — would agree with it. Still, such comments have sometimes made their author the focus of nearly histrionic vilification.

Throughout his autobiography, this lifelong Chicagoan seems able to remember the full names of everyone he’s ever met, which suggests Epstein started keeping a journal at an early age. He forthrightly despises several older writers rather similar to himself, calling Clifton Fadiman, author of “The Lifetime Reading Plan,” pretentious, then quite cruelly comparing Mortimer J. Adler, general editor of the “Great Books of the Western World” series, with Sir William Haley, one of those deft, widely read English journalists who make all Americans feel provincial. To Epstein, “no two men were more unalike; Sir William, modest, suave, intellectually sophisticated; Mortimer vain, coarse, intellectually crude.” In effect, Fadiman and Adler are both presented as cultural snake-oil salesmen. Of course, both authors were popularizers and adept at marketing their work, but helping to enrich the intellectual lives of ordinary people doesn’t strike me as an ignoble purpose.

In his own work, Epstein regularly employs humor, bits of slang or wordplay, and brief anecdotes to keep his readers smiling. For instance, in a chapter about an editorial stint at the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Epstein relates this story about a colleague named Martin Self:

“During those days, when anti-Vietnam War protests were rife, a young woman in the office wearing a protester’s black armband, asked Martin if he were going to that afternoon’s protest march. ‘No, Naomi,’ he said, ‘afternoons such as this I generally spend at the graveside of George Santayana.’”

Learned wit, no doubt, but everything — syntax, diction, the choice of the philosopher Santayana for reverence — is just perfect.

But Epstein can be earthier, too. Another colleague “was a skirt-chaser extraordinaire," a man "you would not feel safe leaving alone with your great-grandmother.” And of himself, he declares: “I don’t for a moment wish to give the impression that I live unrelievedly on the highbrow level of culture. I live there with a great deal of relief.”

In his many essays, including the sampling in “Familiarity Breeds Content,” Epstein is also markedly “quotacious,” often citing passages from his wide reading to add authority to an argument or simply to share his pleasure in a well-turned observation. Oddly enough, such borrowed finery is largely absent from “Never Say You’ve Had a Happy Life.” One partial exception might be the unpronounceable adjective “immitigable,” which appears all too often. It means unable to be mitigated or softened, and Epstein almost certainly stole it from his friend Shils, who was fond of the word.

Despite his autobiography’s jaunty title, Epstein has seen his share of trouble. As a young man working for an anti-poverty program in Little Rock, he married a waitress after she became pregnant with his child. When they separated a decade later, he found himself with four sons to care for — two from her previous marriage, two from theirs. Burt, the youngest, lost an eye in an accident while a toddler, couldn’t keep a job, fathered a child out of wedlock and eventually died of an opioid overdose at 28. Initially hesitant, Epstein came to adore Burt’s daughter, Annabelle, as did his second wife, Barbara, whom he married when they were both just past 40.

Some pages of “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” will be familiar to inveterate readers of Epstein’s literary journalism, all of which carries a strong first-person vibe. Not surprisingly, however, the recycled anecdotage feels less sharp or witty the second time around. But overall, this look back over a long life is consistently entertaining, certainly more page-turner than page-stopper. To enjoy Epstein at his very best, though, you should seek out his earlier essay collections such as “The Middle of My Tether,” “Partial Payments” and “A Line Out for a Walk.” Whether he writes about napping or name-dropping or a neglected writer such as Somerset Maugham, his real subject is always, at heart, the wonder and strangeness of human nature.
