Khutbah al-Hajah: How to begin a Khutbah Sermon in Arabic and English

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Click here for ready-made printable instructions in PDF format

When the preacher ( khatib ) begins his sermon, he should say the following words in Arabic, along with the English translation if the audience primarily speaks English.

Note: This is not the only permissible formula that can be used, but it is popular and in accordance with the authentic Sunnah as recorded in Sunan Ibn Mājah 1892 and Sunan al-Nasā’ī 1578 . Allah knows best.

The preacher should begin, saying:

All praise is due to Allah. We praise him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and our evil deeds. Whoever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him. Whoever Allah leads astray, there is none to guide him. I testify there is no God but Allah alone, without any partners, and that Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is His servant and His messenger.

Allah Almighty said, “O you who have faith, fear Allah as it is His right to be feared and do not die unless you are Muslims,” (3:102)

And Allah Almighty said, “Fear Allah, from whom you ask each other, and in your family ties, for Allah is ever watchful over you,” (4:1)

And Allah Almighty said, “Fear Allah and speak words as befitting. He will amend your deeds for you and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His messenger has achieved a great triumph.” (33:70-71)

The truest word is the Book of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The most evil matters are those that are newly invented, for every newly invented matter is an innovation. Every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire.

To proceed (and then begin the sermon)…

You are here

To the opening session of the international islamic conference.

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, And praise be to God, Lord of all worlds; prayers and peace be upon our master, Muhammad, and on all his house and companions, Distinguished scholars, Honoured ladies and gentlemen,

Peace, God's mercy and blessings be upon you,

It is a real pleasure for me to welcome you at your meeting today in Amman, to discuss the different issues and challenges facing the Muslim Umma (nation). You are most welcome, guests and scholars, for whom we hold respect and appreciation.

Dear Brothers,

Over the ages, Islam has established a basis for better human relations between individuals, nations and peoples, irrespective of differences in religion, colour or gender, on the principles of tolerance and dialogue with others. This was meant for the good of mankind, everywhere, at all times. Yet today, the Umma is defamed, abused and falsely accused when it comes to discussions of the Umma's role in this age.

As a start, let us confess that we, Muslims, have not always fulfilled our obligations towards our religion and towards ourselves. Some Muslims, or those who promulgate “Islamic” slogans, have defamed Islam and Muslims, and harmed Muslims, intentionally or non-intentionally.

The divisions between the children of the Umma, acts of violence and terrorism practiced by some groups and organisations, what is going on in Iraq, Pakistan and other Muslim countries in the form of accusations of apostasy and the killing of Muslims in the name of Islam, do not correspond to the principles and spirit of Islam, and Islam disavows them. Such practices generate turmoil and corruption on earth, because they give justification to non-Muslims to judge Islam according to acts that Islam disavows, and subsequently interfere in Muslims' affairs.

We find it incumbent on us as Muslims, whose hearts are filled with love for God and His Prophet, to be the first to face these unjust campaigns to which Islam is presently subjected, and to be the first to call on fellow Muslims to reject discord and to unite their words and their positions. Thus came the Amman Message which was launched by us in the holy month of Ramadan last year, from the Hashimiyyeen Mosque in Amman. Then we called for convening this conference in which representatives of the eight Muslim schools of thought (Mathahib) congregate from different countries to discuss the many issues and challenges to the Umma and to specify fundamental basic solutions to overcome them.

The first and most important of these challenges is unifying the position of the adherents to the eight Islamic schools of thought: the four Sunni schools, the Ja`fari Shi`i school, the Ibadi school, the Zaydi school and the Thahiri school. We can begin by acknowledging that, in the practice of their faith, the adherents to each of these eight schools of jurisprudence are practicing true Islam, and that declaring any one of them an apostate is unacceptable. Disagreement among scholars (ulama) is a blessing. Let us follow the example of Imam Al Shafi`i's saying: our school of thought is right, but might be wrong, and other schools of thought are wrong, but might be right.

Great Muslim scholars and trusted Muslim authorities issued fatwas – which are familiar to you – affirming that this principle is right and acceptable, because the adherents to the eight schools of thought are in agreement on the fundamental principles of Islam: they all believe in God the Almighty and Sublime, the One and Unique, that the noble Quran is the word of God revealed, and that our master, Mohammad, peace be upon him, is a Prophet and Messenger unto all mankind. All agree on the five pillars of Islam: the two testaments of faith (shahadatayn), ritual prayer (salat), almsgiving (zakat), fasting the month of Ramadan (sawm), the pilgrimage (Hajj) to the Sacred House of God, and also on the foundations of belief: belief in God and His Angels, His Scriptures, His Messengers and the Day of Judgement, in divine providence – good and evil.

Disagreement between scholars is only with respect to some of the ancillary branches of religion (furu') which came into light after the death of our master, the Prophet, peace be upon him. These disagreements originated with matters pertaining to worldly and political affairs of the Caliphate. The fatwas of the prominent scholars of the Islamic Umma also accepted as legitimate all forms of worship practiced by adherents to the eight Islamic schools of thought in accordance with their own Mathab and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar's fatwa included that moderate Sufi thought is acceptable as long as it is based on the two testaments of faith that God is the One and Unique and that Muhammad is Allah's messenger, and as long as it adheres to the five pillars of Islam and the Holy Quran.

Acknowledgement of the schools of jurisprudence within Islam would permit the emergence of a fundamental methodology in the issuance of fatwas, and the definition of who is qualified for this undertaking. This, with God's will, would end the practice of defaming others as apostates and close the door on ignorant people who practice killing and terrorism – of which Islam is innocent – in the name of Islam.

Honourable Scholars,

You meet today with so many issues and challenges facing the Umma on your agenda. You are, with God's guidance, qualified to deal with these issues and challenges, and to define Islam's position on each one of them. Primary among our obligations as Muslims is to present to the world the true essence of Islam – the religion of moderation, forgiveness, mercy and rational, scientific dialogue. Islam is not the religion of violence and terrorism or prejudice and isolation. God Almighty says:

“Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and fair exhortation, and reason with them in the better way. Lo! Thy lord is best aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is best aware of those Who go aright” (al-Nahl: 125).

Islam provided us with rules to best protect human rights and to guard man's freedom and his human dignity, irrespective of his religion, gender or colour. God Almighty says:

“O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is knower, Aware” (al-Hujurat: 13).

Islam emphasised the need to respect the rights of minorities and non-Muslims who live within Muslim society. It established for us a clear methodology to honour relations, conventions and agreements between Muslims and other nations and peoples. God Almighty says:

“And keep the covenant. Lo! Of the covenant it will be asked” (al-Isra' :34).

Islam does not accept prejudice and isolation, but calls upon us to seek scholarship and knowledge. God Almighty says:

“Are those who know equal with those who know not” (al-Zumar:9)

It also calls us to be open to others, and to benefit from their experiences in all fields of life. God Almighty says:

“Ask the followers of the Remembrance if ye know not” (al-Nahl:43).

Distinguished Scholars,

I am confident that you are aware of the challenges facing Muslims today, and of the malicious attack on Islam through slander and misrepresentation due to some Muslims' lack of understanding of the essence of their religion and the ignorance of many non-Muslims of the nature and noble values of our religion.

From this arises the importance of your role and the responsibility you shoulder in unifying the Islamic Umma, with all its schools of jurisprudence and presenting the truth about our faith and its great message.

May God, the Almighty and Sublime, grant all of us success in serving our religion and our Umma and unifying the Islamic nation.

Peace, God's mercy and blessings be upon you.

15 Powerful Speech Opening Lines (And How to Create Your Own)

powerful speech opening

Powerful speech opening lines set the tone and mood of your speech. It’s what grips the audience to want to know more about the rest of your talk.

The first few seconds are critical. It’s when you have maximum attention of the audience. And you must capitalize on that!

Instead of starting off with something plain and obvious such as a ‘Thank you’ or ‘Good Morning’, there’s so much more you can do for a powerful speech opening (here’s a great article we wrote a while ago on how you should NOT start your speech ).

To help you with this, I’ve compiled some of my favourite openings from various speakers. These speakers have gone on to deliver TED talks , win international Toastmaster competitions or are just noteworthy people who have mastered the art of communication.

After each speaker’s opening line, I have added how you can include their style of opening into your own speech. Understanding how these great speakers do it will certainly give you an idea to create your own speech opening line which will grip the audience from the outset!

Alright! Let’s dive into the 15 powerful speech openings…

Note: Want to take your communications skills to the next level? Book a complimentary consultation with one of our expert communication coaches. We’ll look under the hood of your hurdles and pick two to three growth opportunities so you can speak with impact!

1. Ric Elias

Opening: “Imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. Imagine a plane full of smoke. Imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack. It sounds scary. Well I had a unique seat that day. I was sitting in 1D.”

How to use the power of imagination to open your speech?

Putting your audience in a state of imagination can work extremely well to captivate them for the remainder of your talk.

It really helps to bring your audience in a certain mood that preps them for what’s about to come next. Speakers have used this with high effectiveness by transporting their audience into an imaginary land to help prove their point.

When Ric Elias opened his speech, the detail he used (3000 ft, sound of the engine going clack-clack-clack) made me feel that I too was in the plane. He was trying to make the audience experience what he was feeling – and, at least in my opinion, he did.

When using the imagination opening for speeches, the key is – detail. While we want the audience to wander into imagination, we want them to wander off to the image that we want to create for them. So, detail out your scenario if you’re going to use this technique.

Make your audience feel like they too are in the same circumstance as you were when you were in that particular situation.

2. Barack Obama

Opening: “You can’t say it, but you know it’s true.”

3. Seth MacFarlane

Opening: “There’s nowhere I would rather be on a day like this than around all this electoral equipment.” (It was raining)

How to use humour to open your speech?

When you use humour in a manner that suits your personality, it can set you up for a great speech. Why? Because getting a laugh in the first 30 seconds or so is a great way to quickly get the audience to like you.

And when they like you, they are much more likely to listen to and believe in your ideas.

Obama effortlessly uses his opening line to entice laughter among the audience. He brilliantly used the setting (the context of Trump becoming President) and said a line that completely matched his style of speaking.

Saying a joke without really saying a joke and getting people to laugh requires you to be completely comfortable in your own skin. And that’s not easy for many people (me being one of them).

If the joke doesn’t land as expected, it could lead to a rocky start.

Keep in mind the following when attempting to deliver a funny introduction:

  • Know your audience: Make sure your audience gets the context of the joke (if it’s an inside joke among the members you’re speaking to, that’s even better!). You can read this article we wrote where we give you tips on how you can actually get to know your audience better to ensure maximum impact with your speech openings
  • The joke should suit your natural personality. Don’t make it look forced or it won’t elicit the desired response
  • Test the opening out on a few people who match your real audience. Analyze their response and tweak the joke accordingly if necessary
  • Starting your speech with humour means your setting the tone of your speech. It would make sense to have a few more jokes sprinkled around the rest of the speech as well as the audience might be expecting the same from you

4. Mohammed Qahtani

Opening: Puts a cigarette on his lips, lights a lighter, stops just before lighting the cigarette. Looks at audience, “What?”

5. Darren Tay

Opening: Puts a white pair of briefs over his pants.

How to use props to begin your speech?

The reason props work so well in a talk is because in most cases the audience is not expecting anything more than just talking. So when a speaker pulls out an object that is unusual, everyone’s attention goes right to it.

It makes you wonder why that prop is being used in this particular speech.

The key word here is unusual . To grip the audience’s attention at the beginning of the speech, the prop being used should be something that the audience would never expect. Otherwise, it just becomes something that is common. And common = boring!

What Mohammed Qahtani and Darren Tay did superbly well in their talks was that they used props that nobody expected them to.

By pulling out a cigarette and lighter or a white pair of underwear, the audience can’t help but be gripped by what the speaker is about to do next. And that makes for a powerful speech opening.

6. Simon Sinek

Opening: “How do you explain when things don’t go as we assume? Or better, how do you explain when others are able to achieve things that seem to defy all of the assumptions?”

7. Julian Treasure

Opening: “The human voice. It’s the instrument we all play. It’s the most powerful sound in the world. Probably the only one that can start a war or say “I love you.” And yet many people have the experience that when they speak people don’t listen to them. Why is that? How can we speak powerfully to make change in the world?”

How to use questions to open a speech?

I use this method often. Starting off with a question is the simplest way to start your speech in a manner that immediately engages the audience.

But we should keep our questions compelling as opposed to something that is fairly obvious.

I’ve heard many speakers start their speeches with questions like “How many of us want to be successful?”

No one is going to say ‘no’ to that and frankly, I just feel silly raising my hand at such questions.

Simon Sinek and Jullian Treasure used questions in a manner that really made the audience think and make them curious to find out what the answer to that question is.

What Jullian Treasure did even better was the use of a few statements which built up to his question. This made the question even more compelling and set the theme for what the rest of his talk would be about.

So think of what question you can ask in your speech that will:

  • Set the theme for the remainder of your speech
  • Not be something that is fairly obvious
  • Be compelling enough so that the audience will actually want to know what the answer to that question will be

8. Aaron Beverley

Opening: Long pause (after an absurdly long introduction of a 57-word speech title). “Be honest. You enjoyed that, didn’t you?”

How to use silence for speech openings?

The reason this speech opening stands out is because of the fact that the title itself is 57 words long. The audience was already hilariously intrigued by what was going to come next.

But what’s so gripping here is the way Aaron holds the crowd’s suspense by…doing nothing. For about 10 to 12 seconds he did nothing but stand and look at the audience. Everyone quietened down. He then broke this silence by a humorous remark that brought the audience laughing down again.

When going on to open your speech, besides focusing on building a killer opening sentence, how about just being silent?

It’s important to keep in mind that the point of having a strong opening is so that the audience’s attention is all on you and are intrigued enough to want to listen to the rest of your speech.

Silence is a great way to do that. When you get on the stage, just pause for a few seconds (about 3 to 5 seconds) and just look at the crowd. Let the audience and yourself settle in to the fact that the spotlight is now on you.

I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something about starting the speech off with a pure pause that just makes the beginning so much more powerful. It adds credibility to you as a speaker as well, making you look more comfortable and confident on stage.

If you want to know more about the power of pausing in public speaking , check out this post we wrote. It will give you a deeper insight into the importance of pausing and how you can harness it for your own speeches. You can also check out this video to know more about Pausing for Public Speaking:

9. Dan Pink

Opening: “I need to make a confession at the outset here. Little over 20 years ago, I did something that I regret. Something that I’m not particularly proud of. Something that in many ways I wish no one would ever know but that here I feel kind of obliged to reveal.”

10. Kelly McGonigal

Opening: “I have a confession to make. But first I want you to make a little confession to me.”

How to use a build-up to open your speech?

When there are so many amazing ways to start a speech and grip an audience from the outset, why would you ever choose to begin your speech with a ‘Good morning?’.

That’s what I love about build-ups. They set the mood for something awesome that’s about to come in that the audience will feel like they just have to know about.

Instead of starting a speech as it is, see if you can add some build-up to your beginning itself. For instance, in Kelly McGonigal’s speech, she could have started off with the question of stress itself (which she eventually moves on to in her speech). It’s not a bad way to start the speech.

But by adding the statement of “I have a confession to make” and then not revealing the confession for a little bit, the audience is gripped to know what she’s about to do next and find out what indeed is her confession.

11. Tim Urban

Opening: “So in college, I was a government major. Which means that I had to write a lot of papers. Now when a normal student writes a paper, they might spread the work out a little like this.”

12. Scott Dinsmore

Opening: “8 years ago, I got the worst career advice of my life.”

How to use storytelling as a speech opening?

“The most powerful person in the world is the storyteller.” Steve Jobs

Storytelling is the foundation of good speeches. Starting your speech with a story is a great way to grip the audience’s attention. It makes them yearn to want to know how the rest of the story is going to pan out.

Tim Urban starts off his speech with a story dating back to his college days. His use of slides is masterful and something we all can learn from. But while his story sounds simple, it does the job of intriguing the audience to want to know more.

As soon as I heard the opening lines, I thought to myself “If normal students write their paper in a certain manner, how does Tim write his papers?”

Combine such a simple yet intriguing opening with comedic slides, and you’ve got yourself a pretty gripping speech.

Scott Dismore’s statement has a similar impact. However, just a side note, Scott Dismore actually started his speech with “Wow, what an honour.”

I would advise to not start your talk with something such as that. It’s way too common and does not do the job an opening must, which is to grip your audience and set the tone for what’s coming.

13. Larry Smith

Opening: “I want to discuss with you this afternoon why you’re going to fail to have a great career.”

14. Jane McGonigal

Opening: “You will live 7.5 minutes longer than you would have otherwise, just because you watched this talk.”

How to use provocative statements to start your speech?

Making a provocative statement creates a keen desire among the audience to want to know more about what you have to say. It immediately brings everyone into attention.

Larry Smith did just that by making his opening statement surprising, lightly humorous, and above all – fearful. These elements lead to an opening statement which creates so much curiosity among the audience that they need to know how your speech pans out.

This one time, I remember seeing a speaker start a speech with, “Last week, my best friend committed suicide.” The entire crowd was gripped. Everyone could feel the tension in the room.

They were just waiting for the speaker to continue to know where this speech will go.

That’s what a hard-hitting statement does, it intrigues your audience so much that they can’t wait to hear more! Just a tip, if you do start off with a provocative, hard-hitting statement, make sure you pause for a moment after saying it.

Silence after an impactful statement will allow your message to really sink in with the audience.

15. Ramona J Smith

Opening: In a boxing stance, “Life would sometimes feel like a fight. The punches, jabs and hooks will come in the form of challenges, obstacles and failures. Yet if you stay in the ring and learn from those past fights, at the end of each round, you’ll be still standing.”

How to use your full body to grip the audience at the beginning of your speech?

In a talk, the audience is expecting you to do just that – talk. But when you enter the stage and start putting your full body into use in a way that the audience does not expect, it grabs their attention.

Body language is critical when it comes to public speaking. Hand gestures, stage movement, facial expressions are all things that need to be paid attention to while you’re speaking on stage. But that’s not I’m talking about here.

Here, I’m referring to a unique use of the body that grips the audience, like how Ramona did. By using her body to get into a boxing stance, imitating punches, jabs and hooks with her arms while talking – that’s what got the audience’s attention.

The reason I say this is so powerful is because if you take Ramona’s speech and remove the body usage from her opening, the entire magic of the opening falls flat.

While the content is definitely strong, without those movements, she would not have captured the audience’s attention as beautifully as she did with the use of her body.

So if you have a speech opening that seems slightly dull, see if you can add some body movement to it.

If your speech starts with a story of someone running, actually act out the running. If your speech starts with a story of someone reading, actually act out the reading.

It will make your speech opening that much more impactful.

Seeking refuge with Allaah at the beginning of a khutbah or lecture

Publication : 04-09-2007

Praise be to Allah.

It is not prescribed to seek refuge with Allaah from the accursed shaytaan when starting to speak, except when reciting Qur’aan only. Allaah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So when you want to recite the Qur’aan, seek refuge with Allaah from Shaytaan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one)”

[al-Nahl 16:98]

It is not mustahabb for the preacher or speaker to start his words with seeking refuge with Allaah, unless there is a reason for doing so, such as if the shaytaan is whispering to him (waswaas) and filling his heart with pride or self admiration and the like. There is nothing wrong with seeking refuge with Allaah in that case for that reason, when seeking refuge is not done in order to start speaking. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And if an evil whisper from Shaytaan (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) (from doing good), then seek refuge in Allaah. Verily, He is the All‑Hearer, the All‑Knower”

[Fussilat 41:36].

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd said:

It is not prescribed to seek refuge with Allaah when starting to speak about something good, apart from recitation of the Holy Qur’aan. Hence starting to speak or preach by seeking refuge with Allaah has no basis. This is indicated by what Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) noted when discussing the benefits of seeking refuge with Allaah, when he said:

Seeking refuge before reciting is a signal that what is to follow is Qur’aan. Hence it is not prescribed to seek refuge before any other kind of speech, rather seeking refuge is an introduction that alerts the listener to the fact that what is to follow is Qur’aanic recitation, so that when the listener hears the words seeking refuge, he can prepare himself to listen to the words of Allaah. It is also prescribed for the reader, if he is alone, for the reasons that we have mentioned of this ruling and others. End quote.

Speech Delivery Essentials

opening speech in english islamic

By Ikhlas Hassen

Got to give the Khutbah? Want to start a Halaqah? Use these tips to increase your speech delivery skills!

1) Thikr – Remembrance of Allah (subhanahu wa tala)

Malik related to me that he heard that ‘Isa ibn Maryam used to say, “Do not speak much without the mention of Allah for you will harden your hearts. A hard heart is far from Allah, but you do not know. Do not look at the wrong actions of people as if you were lords. Look at your wrong actions as if you were slaves. Some people are afflicted by wrong action and some people are protected from it. Be merciful to the people of affliction and praise Allah for His protection.”  56.3.8 Malik’s Muwatta.

Remember Allah in everything you do. In the beginning of any speech, the confident and strong speaker says Bismillah (In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful), or reads some Quran. Aside from the deeds earned from reciting the Quran and remembering Allah (subhanahu wa tala), it will free yourself from nervousness.

2) Stage Presence – expressing your confidence through non-verbal means. This is achieved through:

  • The strong speaker in his or her ability to overcome difficulties. This confidence will invariably translate to the quality of your demeanor and posture.
  • Take all the Prophets as an example. The strong speaker is knowledgeable about his or her topic. In public speaking, there is no substitute for hard work or researching and grappling with a subject until you are able to speak about it at length, extemporaneously, with limited prompts. This preparation includes frequent rehearsal. Again, if you know that you are prepared to speak, you will find it much easier to relax and present a comfortable but alert posture.
  • The strong speaker knows how to harness nervous energy.
  • Do not lock your arms in front or behind your body. Allow your arms to hang naturally and use them for emphasis just like you would if you were having a conversation. This will require a great deal of practice to perfect.

3) Eye Contact

Good eye contact communicates both personal confidence and respect for your audience. Great speakers, following the guidelines of Islam, make a point of engaging their audiences by moving around the stage and even sometimes around the audience- ensuring that they make eye contact with everyone. * If you do not have the courage to make eye contact with you audience, then the audience will quickly lose interest in your speech.

4) Movement

There are some exceptions, but a speaker should not be static. Movement, as well as gestures, is vital to maintaining speaker and audience enthusiasm for the presentation or lecture. The good speaker follows the 3 principles in ensuring lively (but not irritating) movement. They are:

  • Never turn your back on the audience while you are speaking (great speakers never turn their back. period.).
  • If you are moving about on the stage, make your movements purposeful. Don’t wander about in some geometric lazy pattern. Use your movement to reinforce or emphasize a point. Use it with gestures to draw the audience in or to push them away, depending on the effect that you are trying to achieve at a particular moment.
  • Be aware (or beware) of all potential obstacles on the stage (and off if you leave it).  A fall or trip can be embarrassing and will kill your concentration.

5) Articulation & Vocal Modulation

This one of the most important and difficult element of speech delivery.

Articulation: Some people tend to judge speakers based on their ability to pronounce words correctly and clearly. Unfortunately and especially for most foreigners, this is not something that can be taught in 3 easy lessons. If you have difficulty pronouncing certain words you need to (in the short term) limit your vocal vocabulary. In the long term, you will need to acquaint yourself with the correct method of using a dictionary to facilitate proper pronunciation.

Voice modulation: Good speakers do three things with their voices to maintain audience interest

  • Be enthusiastic. This will communicate your interest and excitement for you topic and help generate audience interest, too.
  • Exaggerated voice inflection. Inflection in conversational speaking is difficult to detect when you are speaking in front of an audience. Exaggerate inflections when you are making points/demonstrating some kinds of emotion appropriate to the emotions that are trying to stir in you audience.
  • Do not speak in a monotone! Monotone does not necessarily mean speaking in a low, drowning voice. Some speakers speak in a loud monotone, and worse yet, some yell in monotone. You must modulate your speaking (see 1 & 2 above) at whatever volume that you are speaking at, whether loud, medium, or soft/low.

6) Questions

Depending of what type of speech it its, allow the audience to ask questions. Answering positively will get the point through.

7) End with an Ayah/Hadith, a duaa of your choice, or whatever applies to your speech

This does not guaranteed automatic success. Learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them next time. By practicing you will become a better communicator. Insha’Allah, these tips will help you in your upcoming presentations or lectures at school, work, or masjid.

Indeed the best speech is the speech of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (S) . And the worst of matters are those innovated by the people, and every innovated matter is a bid’ah and every bid’ah is astray, and every going astray is in the fire.

BarakaAllahu feeki – very good article, I came across it by chance.

You know one thing I’d add is to remember that Allah guides and not the speaker. Sometimes those who are given a platform to express themselves expect immediate results as a result of their speech. This is never the case, it is only Allah who can open the door of acceptance in someone’s heart. The speaker’s job is to convey to the best of his ability and not expect anything as a result of his speech – but only as a result of Allah’s guidance.

O Allah guide us and guide thru us!

Lemme add one of the ways of starting a presentation too. Starting with the sweet name of almighty Allah who is most merciful, gracious and benevolent, the one who taught us the use of pen and created us from drops of blood. After all praise to almighty Allah, I would like to welcome you with an Islamic greetings Assalam o alaikom….

Stories for Muslim Kids

Short stories for muslims of different ages, starting du’aa (in a gathering).

It is narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“A statement that does not begin with praise of Allah and blessing upon me, remains deficient and bereft of blessings.”  (Abu Dawud, 13/184)

Here are 4 suggestions on how one could start one’s speech in a gathering, in shaa Allah. Suggestion 1 is the longest. Suggestion 4 is the shortest. (You may use any of these or a combination of any of these suggestions.):

Suggestion 1

Video examples:

• https://youtu.be/AhM__O27MFg (Sheikh Shareef El-Arbi)

• https://youtu.be/nvbYGhHh-nw (Sheikh Dr Karim AbuZaid)

Suggestion 2

Video example:

• https://youtu.be/UxbDTo37sA8 (Sheikh Dr Karim AbuZaid)

Suggestion 3

• Assalaamu’alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. (May the peace and mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you)

• A’oodhu billaahi minash shaytaanirr rajeem. Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen. (I seek Allah’s protection against the accursed devil. In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful,  the Especially Merciful. All praise and thanks to Allah, the Lord of the worlds/nations.)

• Wassalaatu wassalaamu ‘alaa rasoolillaah wa ‘alaa aalihee wa saHbihee aj-ma’een. (And [O Allah, please give your] favour/blessings and peace upon the Messenger and all of his family and his companions.)

• Rabbish rahlee Sadree wa yassir-lee ‘amree wah lul ‘uqdatan min lisaani, yaf qahoo qaulee “My Lord, expand for me my breast/chest [with assurance] and ease for me my task and untie the knot from my tongue (so) that they may understand my speech.”

• https://youtu.be/fiPQvgvb8A8 (Ustadha Yasmin Mogahed)

• https://youtu.be/Xag4EQIQNeE (Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan)

Suggestion 4

• Bismillah. Alhamdulillah. Was Salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Rasoolillaah. Amma ba’d. (In the name Allah. All praise and thanks to Allah. And [O Allah, please give your] favour/blessings and peace upon the Messenger. And so what follows / so what comes after / to proceed.)

• ……

• https://youtu.be/IjHwJjgNzOc (Brother Eddie from the Deen Show)

• https://youtu.be/TTWn8CSM7Vw (Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan)

• https://youtu.be/XtlRRjMeShQ (Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan)

……..

(Note: You could say “Assalaamu’alaykum” before or after the du’aas/introduction, as you could see how Ustadha Yasmin Mogahed and Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan started their speech)

Beginning with "Bismillah , walHamdulillah , wasSalaatu wasSalaamu alaa Rasoolillah"

Just in case the above has broken links:

Source: https://abuaminaelias.com/dailyhadithonline/2011/12/26/khutbah-al-hajah-how-to-begin-a-khutbah-sermon-in-arabic-and-english/

All thanks and praise is due to Allah. We seek His help and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and the consequences of our evil deeds. Whoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whoever Allah leads astray will never find guidance. I bear witness there is no God but Allah, alone without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger.

Allah Almighty said, “ O you who have faith, fear Allah as it is His right to be feared and do not die except as Muslims ” (3:102)

And Allah Almighty said, “ O people, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. Fear Allah, through whom you ask one another and maintain family ties. Verily, Allah is ever watching over you .” (4:1)

And Allah Almighty said, “ O you who have faith, fear Allah and speak upright words. He will correct your deeds and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has won a tremendous victory .” (33:70-71)

Verily, the most truthful speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire.

To proceed (and then begin the sermon).

Other ways:

Hi!! this is such an amazing speech. Remember to avoid abbreviations like SAW or PBUH when mentioning prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him)'s name.Lets write it in full instead :) Lets also avoid writing SWT. And instead write them in full☺️

Recite this Dua Before Giving a Talk

opening speech in english islamic

Dua Before Giving a Talk

Rabbish rah lii sadrii wa yassir liii amrii wahlul 'uqdatam milli saanii yafqahuu qawlii

My Lord, expand for me my breast (with assurance) ease for me my task and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech.

Importance, Benefits, and Why You Should Recite The Dua

This dua originated when Prophet Musa AS was given the important task of spreading His teachings. In one of his mission, he is expected to see Firaun and warned him that he has overstepped the boundaries and that if he does not ask for Allah's forgiveness, then he would be punished. This was not an easy task, especially knowing Firaun's history of tyranny and the practices of his people. So in order to be able to get through these hardships, he recited this dua to Allah in order to ask for strength and have the courage to go through this challenge.

This dua is recited to ask Allah to make his mission easy, clear his chest, and let the knot of his tongue be loosened in order to deliver His message and therefore have the people understand the message of Allah. Hopefully, the same will also apply to us by reciting this dua. Whenever there are hardships and are required to speak up or be courageous, then InshAllah we will gain His blessings and make the issues that lie ahead of you to be easier.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan formally opened a former Byzantine church in Istanbul as a mosque on Monday, four years after his government had designated it a Muslim house of prayer , despite criticism from neighboring Greece.

Turkey formally converted The Church of St. Saviour in Chora, known as Kariye in Turkish, into a mosque in 2020, soon after it similarly turned Istanbul’s landmark Haghia Sophia into a Muslim house of prayer.

Both conversions drew praise from Muslim faithful but criticism from Greece and other countries who had urged Turkey to protect the important Byzantine-era monuments. Both are listed as U.N. World Heritage Sites.

Like Haghia Sophia, which was a church for centuries and then a mosque for centuries more, the Chora had operated as a museum for decades before it was ordered turned into a mosque. The Chora’s formal launch as a mosque, however, was delayed as the structure then underwent restoration.

Erdogan on Monday remotely presided over a ceremony marking the opening of the Chora — as well as other recently-restored structures — from a conference hall at his palace complex in Ankara.

“May it bring good fortune,” Erdogan said during the televised event.

Musa Tombul was among the first worshippers to pray inside.

“I have been waiting for its opening for four years,” he told the state-run Anadolu Agency. “I was honored to pray in such a place.”

“We thank God for showing us these days,” Anadolu quoted another worshiper, Haydar Senbahar, as saying. “Hopefully, we will come here from time to time and perform our prayers.”

The church, situated near Istanbul’s ancient city walls, is famed for its elaborate mosaics and frescoes. It dates to the fourth century, although the edifice took on its current form in the 11th-12th centuries.

The structure served as a mosque during Ottoman rule before being transformed into a museum in 1945.

Greece had criticized the Turkish government’s decision to turn it back into a mosque, accusing Ankara of “insulting the character” of another World Heritage Site.

The decisions to transform Haghia Sophia and the Chora back into mosques were seen as moves geared to consolidate the conservative and religious support base of Erdogan’s ruling party amid an economic downturn.

In 2020, Erdogan joined hundreds of worshipers for the first Muslim prayers in Hagia Sophia in 86 years, brushing aside international criticism and calls for the monument to be kept as a museum. As many as 350,000 took part in the prayers outside the structure.

Police remove tents, clear USC pro-Palestinian encampment; no arrests made

In a swift predawn operation three days before graduation ceremonies begin, USC campus police and LAPD officers in riot gear cleared a pro-Palestinian encampment from the center of campus Sunday as protesters beat drums, chanted and later pledged to continue their demonstration.

There were no arrests during the sweep, according to USC officials and student activists. By about 8 a.m. some 40 tents, posters, debris and barricades had been hauled away. A party rental company moved in as a tall black fence was installed around the park.

“The operation was peaceful. Campus is opening, students are returning to prepare for finals, and commencement set-up is in full swing,” USC President Carol Folt wrote in a campuswide email Sunday.

Folt, who has been confronted by supporters and opponents of pro-Palestinian activists for her handling of the protest and free speech on campus, said the university had “issued repeated warnings.”

“When free speech protests devolve into illegal occupations, violating the rights of others, we must draw a line,” Folt said.

The police operation was the culmination of a second tense week of protests at USC and universities throughout the country as college presidents faced criticism for calling in police in riot gear to clear pro-Palestinian encampments. Leaders have struggled to balance campus safety and the right to protest, with calls to address antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred. Many have been under pressure to clear camps before commencements, when parents, alumni, donors and luminaries descend on campuses.

In one of the most violent incidents at a protest, a mob attacked a UCLA pro-Palestinian encampment last week, prompting anger over the university’s handling of campus safety. Police arrested more than 200 people after moving onto the Westwood campus to push out protesters.

Sunday’s USC sweep was the second time police dismantled the encampment. It unfolded as graduation activities are set to kick off Wednesday with tens of thousands of guests on campus. Los Angeles police arrested 93 activists — most of them USC students — on April 24 on suspicion of trespassing when they cleared the encampment in Alumni Park.

At 4:17 a.m. Sunday, USC issued a text message alert saying the Los Angeles Police Department had arrived and that people should leave central campus, which was closed off to everyone, including students. Officers from the campus Department of Public Safety issued a dispersal warning to activists. About 30 protesters left as police pushed them toward the university’s Jefferson Boulevard exit.

“Free, free Palestine,” demonstrators chanted as they faced police at the perimeter officers set up outside the camp, beating drums while helicopters hovered overhead.

LAPD officers cleared USC’s encampment at Alumni Park by 6 a.m. Sunday.

About 5 a.m., police entered the encampment. They dismantled tents, leaving behind posters, trash and makeshift barriers. Campus Police Chief Lauretta Hill gave a fist bump to the remaining officers. An hour later, Alumni Park was empty and quiet, largely devoid of police, as workers cleaned the grounds.

The University Park campus reopened to students, faculty and staff about 10 a.m. as USC issued a new warning via text message: Tents and related equipment were prohibited, along with camping and unpermitted events. Those breaking the rules would be subject to discipline.

“No individuals or groups may obstruct free passage throughout our campuses, commencement setup, or other functions,” the alert said.

“We will be back. Free Palestine,” said a message the student activists posted the Instagram account of USC Student Coalition Against Labor Exploitation. The pro-Palestinian group that set up the encampment, USC Divest from Death Coalition, uses the labor organization’s social media for its official announcements.

“We are not done,” a spokesperson for the student activists said after the camp was cleared. The spokesperson did not give details on future actions. The person declined to identify themselves because of fear of retaliation from the USC administration and students opposed to their activism.

Protesters — like others at universities nationwide — have demanded that USC boycott and divest from financial ties with Israel, which USC has rejected.

The encampment spokesperson said Sunday that “divestment is not a short-term movement. Divestment is a long-term movement.... The movement doesn’t end with this occupation. The occupation is simply one way to bring attention and bring our demands.”

After two meetings last week with protest leaders, USC President Folt posted on X that students “seemed more interested in having me issue a political statement in support of their viewpoint as opposed to coming up with practical solutions to resolve the situation.”

In those meetings, Folt said she had “no intention” of asking the LAPD to come to campus again. In an interview with The Times last week, she did not rule it out as an option but said it was not her preference.

In her campus letter Sunday, Folt wrote that “despite our efforts to de-escalate, the occupation was spiraling in a dangerous direction over the last several days.... With no resolution in sight, I requested the LAPD to assist DPS in removing the encampment as peacefully and safely as possible.”

Devin Griffiths, an associate professor of English and comparative literature, said it was “disappointing that the LAPD was invited back onto campus after many faculty strongly expressed their anger and worry at the invitation of the LAPD a little over a week ago.”

Griffiths joined a faculty march last week in support of students’ rights to protest. He is among more than 380 faculty members who had recently called for a no-confidence vote in USC’s top leadership for its handling of tensions.

Some campus members expressed relief that the encampment was cleared.

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 02: The Gaza Solidarity Encampment was created on the campus of Cal State University Los Angeles. A student spokesperson (who did not want to give her name) said the group wants to end the attacks in Gaza; end the occupation of Palestine and called for the school to divest from military industrial companies like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Boeing because they don't want their tuitions going to these companies. The encampment went up May 1 and the spokesperson said they will stay until their demands are met. (Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

Encampments spread across California universities. Are they living on borrowed time?

After police cleared Pro-Palestinian encampments at UCLA, Cal State Humboldt and USC, protesters on other California campuses say they will remain.

May 6, 2024

“I hope it’s gone for good. It’s good news. My only concern is that it took so long for USC to act decisively on this,” said Anna Krylov, a professor of chemistry who has opposed the protest. “I hope in the future they will act more promptly in dealing with this type of illegal disturbance.”

Krylov writes for a Substack called “Voices Against Antisemitism and Anti-Zionism at USC.” She is among nearly 100 faculty members who recently wrote to the USC Academic Senate, urging an investigation into the “persistent and escalating antisemitism and anti-Zionism at USC” and “harassment and intimidation of Jewish students.”

The chemistry professor, who is not Jewish, said the camp had antisemitic slogans, such as signs and chants on “intifada.” Pro-Palestinian groups say the word means a general “uprising,” including boycotts against Israel; pro-Israel groups say it has been used describe deadly attacks against Jewish Israelis.

Student Sabrina Jahan, a pro-Israel senior, was also critical of the protest.

“I’m just glad the focus will hopefully now be back on finals and graduation like it should have been in the first place,” said Jahan, who is Jewish.

Among the remnants of the camp on Sunday morning, a Times reporter found a crumpled and torn document titled “Ground Tactics for the Student Intifada.”

The four pages of typed papers included guides on how to organize human formations when confronted by police. “The purpose of a mass action is not make it go on for as long as humanly possible,” the document read. “The purpose of a mass action is to maximize disruption at a minimum cost to the organizers.”

Tents at USC's Alumni Park on Saturday

John Vidale, a professor of earth sciences, rode his bike by Alumni Park as it was being cleared.

“I’m glad the Gaza protest is over. It was a nuisance,” he said. “However, the students made their point clearly, mostly behaved well, and college is the time and place for such dramatic gestures. The few times it escalated come with the territory, and I like President Folt’s moderate and moral actions.”

The university has designated a “free speech” area in a less visible campus green behind Leavey Library, south of West 34th Street.

Students in the camp said they are not interested in relocating to the designated free speech area, a lesser traveled part of campus.

“Protest locations cannot be dictated by the people in power because then it’s no longer the freedom to protest and assemble,” the encampment spokesperson said.

After canceling commencement, USC will host event at L.A. Coliseum, rolls out new campus security

USC will limit access to its South L.A. campus ahead of its commencement week. The ‘Trojan Family’ graduation event will take place May 9.

May 3, 2024

The decision to clear the first camp sparked further anger after tensions rose when USC decided that valedictorian Asna Tabassum could not deliver a speech during its May 10 commencement — a first in the university’s 143-year history — over unspecified safety threats.

The move happened after pro-Israel groups criticized Tabassum for a link on her Instagram profile directing people to a pro-Palestinian website that they said was antisemitic. The site said “Zionism is a racist settler-colonialist ideology” and calls for “the complete abolishment of the state of Israel” so that “Arabs and Jews can live together.”

Within days, USC canceled its “main stage” commencement. The event draws 65,000 people each year to Alumni Park, where the encampment was set up.

To make up for that, USC on Friday announced a new “Trojan Family” graduation event at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The event will take place Thursday at 8:30 p.m. It will feature a drone show, fireworks and the Trojan Marching Band. Dozens of satellite graduation events for individual colleges, schools and departments will also continue.
