The PhD in Law is designed to provide advanced training for outstanding graduate students who have already obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) degree or its equivalent. The PhD is a research-intensive degree that prepares graduates for opportunities in law teaching, legal research, policy development, public and governmental service, and the practice of law.

The degree requirements include course work, comprehensive exams, a dissertation proposal and defence, a dissertation, and an oral dissertation exam. Working closely with a supervising faculty member, a student in the PhD program is expected to produce a book-length piece of original legal scholarship and of publishable quality.

The PhD provides an opportunity for focused study in a chosen field of law. It does not, of itself, qualify a holder for entry to the legal profession in British Columbia or any other certification for legal practice.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). Dissertation (PhD) proposals form an important part of the admissions process and help to guide the assignment of supervisors and supervisory committees. A proposal should outline a research project that could reasonably lead to a dissertation that makes an original scholarly contribution in the chosen field of legal study. The PhD dissertation proposal is approximately 10 pages (2,500 words), excluding bibliography. Clarity of expression is important. Please upload your thesis proposal under "Writing Sample". List of possible thesis supervisors: All applicants must submit a list indicating your first and second choice for a thesis supervisor, this list should be uploaded to your application form. There is no need to secure a thesis supervisor nor is it is necessary to contact potential thesis supervisors prior to submission of an application as many faculty members prefer that applications are referred by the Graduate Committee for their review.

Allard Hall, the home of the Peter A. Allard School of Law, was opened in 2011. The latest technology connects the Faculty with campuses, courthouses and offices around the world, and a new, state-of-the-art UBC Law Library serves as a vital academic hub for students and the legal community. Natural light, contemporary classroom designs, expanded student service spaces, a student forum space at the centre of the building, and new research spaces are all part of the new facility. The Law Library has a research collection of approximately 225,000 volumes.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

From September 2024 all full-time students in UBC-Vancouver PhD programs will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

January 16, 2024 – Global Affairs Canada’s Study in Canada Scholarships are now accepting applications for the 2024-2025 academic year!

The scholarships are offered to international students wishing to pursue short-term exchange opportunities at post-secondary institutions in Canada.

Canadian postsecondary institutions must apply online on behalf of students. Interested students should contact their home institution’s international office to learn about institutional partnerships and collaborations with Canadian institutions.

How to Study in Canada with a Government of Canada Scholarship

Are you an international student living in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe or the Americas, and you're interested in studying in Canada?

Are you a full-time student in a college, undergraduate or graduate program?

If you answered yes to these questions, you may be interested in a scholarship to study in Canada under a government of Canada Short-term Exchange Program.

What is an exchange program?

Canadian postsecondary schools have student exchange agreements with schools in eligible countries around the world.

This means international students can come to Canada for up to eight months to study or do research.

An exchange program in Canada gives you the opportunity to gain valuable study experience and make professional connections.

How does the scholarship work?

While on an exchange, you'll continue to be enrolled in and pay tuition to your postsecondary school at home.

You won't need to pay tuition to your host school in Canada.

And the academic credits you earn in Canada will count towards your studies at home.

What expenses does the scholarship cover?

That depends on your exchange program and how long it is.

The scholarship may cover expenses like: fees for a visa or study / work permit, round trip airfare to Canada, health insurance, books and supplies for your studies or research, as well as living expenses, such as accommodations, utilities, transportation and food.

First, be sure to check the EduCanada website and social media channels to see what kinds of programs and scholarships are available.

Every year between November and March, you can also find application timelines on our website.

Next, contact your school to tell them you are interested in participating.

Confirm that your school has an exchange agreement with a Canadian school.

Your school then notifies its partner school in Canada of your interest.

The Canadian partner school then applies for the scholarship on your behalf.

The Canadian school will contact you if your application is successful.

Our program structure: Our full-time, four-year, on-campus program has three terms per year. You will take courses for the first year, then complete two comprehensive examinations before beginning your dissertation.
Funding: All of our PhD students are provided with a minimum funding package of $20,000 per year, with average funding of $25,000 per year including teaching opportunities and research assistantships.
Quality supervision and support: Before you apply, you will contact a supervisor who supports your studies and research throughout the program.

Admission Requirements

Successful completion of a Master's degree in Education or equivalent advanced-level credential with first-class standing (A- or 80% or higher) at a recognized university
Professional experience in education or a related field is an asset
Applicants are required to submit a brief research proposal (one to two pages maximum)
Applicants must identify and contact a potential supervisor who has expressed a willingness to supervise their work if they apply for admission and receive an offer of admission.

Completed applications (including submission of transcripts, references, CV and research proposal form) are due by January 15 . Late applications are not considered. Our program begins in September of each year.

Prospective PhD Students: Need Help Finding a Supervisor?

Use the checklist below to assist you in your search for a supervisor in our graduate studies program.

Get to know our Research Faculty – Review our researcher profiles. Understanding who might be a good fit for you is a key first step in the process!
Once you have identified potential fits from our researcher profiles page, examine some of their recent research to identify their areas of interest and expertise. This will help you to determine how they might support your own program of growth. Read through prospective supervisors’ research and professional publications before deciding if they would be a good fit for your research. You may be expected to explain to your potential supervisor how they are best suited to supervise your project with specific reference to the research faculty’s scholarly work.
Express your interest in our program and in having them supervise you for a specific program start date.
Briefly summarize your aims and research purpose.
Identify links between their research and your own, particularly using some of the published work.
An invitation to connect for a conversation.
A 1–2-page proposal that provides more detail than your description in your email. Your proposal should articulate your research questions, your reasons for pursuing these questions, the purpose and aims of your prospective project, your research methodology, and the significance/impact of this research.
An up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) to provide the potential supervisor with some of your background information, including past studies and professional experience.
Review your email to ensure you have said everything you need, and attached everything you want, and send it out! Ensure you have adequate time to order transcripts, complete your IELTS examination (for international applicants), request 2 academic references, etc.
Be patient – Given that the potential supervisor is reviewing your work, understand that it may take at least ten business days to hear back.

Financing your studies

Funding packages.

Funding packages are awarded to students based on academic merit and they may consist of any or a combination of the following: scholarships, fellowships, external awards the student may bring with them, internal awards, research assistantships, teaching assistantships or graduate teaching fellowships.

The minimum guaranteed funding package for eligible full-time PhD students is $20,000 per year (first 12 terms), with most students receiving additional funded opportunities.

It is important to note that you must apply for all major external and internal scholarships (where appropriate) for which you are eligible in order to qualify for the minimum guarantee. Any external awards received will be applied to funding offers (i.e., the external award is not on top of the original $20,000 minimum guarantee); however, funding offers overall for students with external awards are likely to be higher than those who do not receive them.

Normally, if students apply for and successfully obtain a Graduate Teaching Fellowship, Teaching and/or Research Assistantship the average funding for eligible PhD students is approximately $25,000 per year.

The funding will establish a Fellowship Fund to support PhD candidates in Data Science and Machine Learning at the University of Waterloo. Fellowships will be offered starting in 2022.

An Apple PhD Fellow will receive $37,500/year for two years. Up to two fellowships will be awarded each year for two years starting in 2022.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

Students must be in the 2 nd or 3 rd year of their PhD program in the School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.
Students must remain registered full-time and be in good standing in their PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship.
Proposed research must be in the areas of Data Science or Machine Learning.
Students can receive this award in addition to other internal or external scholarships (e.g., OGS, NSERC, etc.)
Students already supported by a comparable industry award at the time of selection are not eligible.
Applications are evaluated on the basis of students' academic achievements, leadership contributions and potential, and the strength of their research proposal.
Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Apple’s research areas, as well as their potential impact to the field.

Engage Billions Scholarship to Attend One Young World Summit 2024 (Fully funded to Montréal, Canada)

Applications are open for the Engage Billions Scholarship to attend One Young World Summit 2024 . 2024 is a unique year for democracy as billions go to the polls in at least 60 countries. That’s almost 50% of the world’s population taking part in elections. This is the first year in history that so many will be casting their votes for the futures they want, and we won’t see another like it until 2048.

Meanwhile, the world finds itself at a crossroads on the route to net zero. To secure a sustainable future, the world needs to undergo a rapid and deep decarbonisation of all sectors of the economy. While many countries have strengthened their climate policies, the rise of a ‘green backlash’ may slow the rate of progress. If the world is to make the necessary steps towards a green and just transition, much will depend on how people vote in this unprecedent election year.

Recognising the importance of this pivotal year, BMW Group seeks to engage and connect upcoming leaders advocating for accelerated climate policy with the backing of broad democratic support. The Engage Billions Scholarship will support young policy leaders from around the world to join the One Young World Summit 2024 in Montréal as part of BMW Group’s global delegation. In addition, scholars will have access to a unique “Welcome! New Parliament” bringing together young business, policy making and NGO leaders in Brussels, the European capital of policy making.

Eligibility

Successful applicants will be young leaders actively involved and making an impact on the role of democracy in climate policy. Selected candidate will have a minimum of two years’ experience in one of the roles below:

A policy a climate policy making/advisory role in a supra-national or national government/civil service.
A policy and advocacy role in a national or international NGO or think tank focussed on climate.
A leadership role within a youth/student led organisation which advocates for progressive climate policy and increased democratic participation.
A leadership role within a community led organisation which advocates for progressive climate policy and increased democratic participation.
Aged 18 – 30 by May 2024.
Available to participate in the One Young World Summit 2024 in Montreal from 17 – 21 September.

1,000 Fully Funded PhD Scholarships in Finland in 2024 (Apply Now)

Finland has spread the Great News. The Finland Ministry of Education and Culture allocated EUR 255 million to Finland universities to provide one thousand Fully Funded PhD Scholarships in Finland in 2024–2027. This new Pilot program is available in 12 Finnish universities. Take advantage of a high-quality education. This pilot program is just more than education. It also includes a three-year employment contract.

This is the first call offering a 3-year employment doctoral researcher contract in various fields such as AI, education, circular economy, cancer medicine, and more. The program aims to increase the number of PhD graduates in Finland significantly. It is expected to address a shortage identified by the government in various sectors. The list of the Participating universities and the links to their websites are given below.

Students from developing countries who have at least two years of professional experience are supported in their pursuit of a postgraduate or master’s degree at a state or state-recognized German institution under the fully-funded international scholarship program. Academic costs, a monthly stipend, health insurance, travel and lodging expenses, and a monthly rent subsidy are all awarded to scholarship applicants. The Master’s degree program will run 12–24 months (depending on the program), while the PhD program will run 36 months for German and international students.

Who can apply? Graduates with at least two years’ professional experience from the following countries: list of eligible countries
List of all Postgraduate courses with application deadlines 2025/26 .
A candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree (usually a four-year course) in a related subject.
A candidate’s academic degree should normally not be more than six years old.
A candidate should have at least two years of professional experience.
