I chose to specialise in Software Engineering from one of the concentration subjects offered in the programme. The programme is designed with up-to-date contents and vast online resources that provided me with better concepts in IT business management. The subjects were not only interesting but very relevant and paramount to my work especially cyber security, cyber law, entrepreneurship, leadership and project management. I was enlightened in many aspects, especially business planning, strategy, legal side of cyber laws which is central to my organisation’s direction.

The knowledge and experiences gained by me in the case seminars and workshops were interesting. I gain a global perspective with an in-depth knowledge of the Asian economies and how to recommend solutions that go beyond international boundaries. I enjoyed the flexibility mode of learning which was amazing as it allows minimal disruption to my family, work commitments and challenges faced in adjusting my time and roles as a public officer, husband and father.

I was able to overcome all the challenges by multitasking and delegating my work to others.

The programme not only gave me knowledge and confidence but had also overcome my fears that had always held me back. The rigorous curriculum is constantly updated to reflect the evolving industry in Early Childhood Education. The course is interesting and have improved my self-confidence and time management in my attempts to balance work and study.

Having to strike a balance between work, study and family life were tough, yet it was the flexible learning mode that enabled me to manage and excel in my studies, with a concentration in Early Childhood Education, earning me the Chairman’s Award at AeU’s 2014 convocation. The qualification has broadened my knowledge in Early Childhood development and confidence to be an effective educator. It had given me an edge on alternative choice if I decide to veer into a different career path in future.

I learned valuable inputs on how to refine and improve my research paper presented at one of AeU’s postgraduate research seminar on an in-depth study of how children behaved under various play situations. Teaching mathematics through plays shows how teacher-engineered socio-dramatic play was effective in promoting mathematical learning especially in the area of logical mathematical processing. As the founder/owner of a pre-school, the degree provided an added endorsement of qualification not only for me but also to my school.

The programme was interesting and practical for me. It is an unforgettable experience that has broadened my perspective and provided me with new insights in my teaching career. The learning experiences steepen my learning growth curve in life. As I expand my mind through the learning process, the programme gave me the keys to break barriers in my teaching career and helped me greatly in developing my expertise in the education field.

The programme helped me to develop good interpersonal and communication skills. I had improved in my writing and oral abilities related to the teaching of Islamic subjects in the classroom.  I have also improved my work ethics, critical thinking and problem solving skills in teaching Islamic subjects by moral values.

I enjoyed the Bachelor of Education programme offered by AeU as it was created specifically for those who did not have the time or opportunity to enter the traditional university. The flexible learning is best for teachers like me who do not want to give up their jobs to further their tertiary education. My knowledge in teaching has increased tremendously and I am thankful to AeU.

I have passed my proposal defense and has started my research project which I hope to complete within the stipulated time frame and budget. My supervisor and lecturers are very supportive and I am very confident that I will successfully complete the project.

I began to learn so many things like statistical analysis, copy writing, research methodology and etc, which gave me extra confidence to stand in any stage to present my PhD research paper boldly. Thanks to my supervisor and AeU. I managed to graduate and attended AeU’s Convocation Ceremony in Malaysia with my family in October 2017.

The learning environment is stimulating and it is above my expectations. The knowledge gained from theories, methodologies and research had sharpened my method and approach in problem-solving in areas of human resource management in the business context. ONLINE DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (Online DBA)

The Online DBA@USM is an online doctoral programme designed especially for those who look for flexibility to pursue Doctoral education via online/virtual platforms while seeking to be leaders in their own right within the business they are involved in. The Online DBA@USM is delivered via Open Distance Learning (ODL) or Online mode. This is the reason why, unlike the PhD programme, the Online DBA is carefully designed to fill the scholar’s journey with key elements that can make an impact on their careers and on the stakeholders they deal with. The Online DBA@USM scholars are facilitated with a holistic Doctoral Scholars Support Ecosystem based on ODL@GSB policy, procedures and best practices. The main goal of the Online DBA programme is to produce business leaders with holistic perspectives bearing these leadership attributes:

• Able to unravel complex business issues and provide practical solutions to marketplace problems.
• Able to conduct systematic, scientific research, consultation and training in creating relevant, innovative practices.
• Possess the skills to apply advanced knowledge of core business disciplines, and modern techniques and tools for the organisation’s decision-making.
• Display creativity, critical thinking and ethical values in managing and transforming change in organisations within the dynamic global business environment.

The first part of the journey involves scholars sharpening their understanding of relevant business fundamentals and building advanced knowledge of core business disciplines. For this to happen, scholars will undertake six seminar papers to enhance their theoretical knowledge and practical strategic decisions. The second part of the journey introduces both Research Methodology and Consultation and Training (CAT) courses that will further hone scholars’ ability to generate and disseminate new knowledge. CAT is one of the capstone subjects. The last leg of the journey involves scholars venturing into another capstone course, i.e. Dissertation.

Overall, the Online DBA journey would provide scholars with experiences that leave them with the 3R’s mark – Relevant, Respected, Referred to .

Do all students have access to the learning facilitators?

Yes. As an online student, you will benefit from the support of learning facilitators throughout the entire programme. Reach out to the facilitators when in need of academic support to ease your learning.  

I have a Bachelor’s degree not relevant to the field of study that I have an interest in. Am I eligible, and can I consider enrolling in the programme?

Yes, however, a bridging module is required for students who are not from a degree in the relevant field. If you require additional information, use the chat function and our education counsellor will assist you. 

Am I eligible for scholarships?

Yes, Taylor's University scholarships are available for selected students. Please refer to our  Scholarship Page  for further information.

Can I switch from a 100% Online Learning programme to a conventional programme, and must I do so within a certain timeframe?

Yes, transfers are available and subject to credit transfer requirements. Thus, it is advisable to complete the 7 weeks module you are enrolled in before requesting for transfer.  

How long is a programme term?

The programme term is 8 weeks long, including 1 week of induction to be briefed on the module you are about to take, 6 learning weeks and 1 week for the preparation of the final assessment and a summary of the learning throughout the module.

Is it compulsory to attend the weekly live session?

No, attendance is not compulsory as all live sessions are recorded and made available on the platform. However, it is to your advantage to attend the live session as you will have the opportunity to connect with your lecturers.

How are examinations conducted?

Students are assessed through the completion of several assignments. A module commonly includes three assessments that can be completed at home and uploaded on the learning platform by the submission date.

How is a programme conducted and how do I know if I am learning effectively?

The weekly content you will be required to go through includes bite-sized activities designed to help you check if you have correctly acquired and understood the intended learning. The online activities take a few minutes to complete, and help you progress confidently from one topic to another.

The multifaceted challenges facing 21st-century education require researchers who can collect and analyse information from a number of academic disciplines — history, psychology, engineering, education, science, and more — and translate these findings into transformative ideas for education policy reform and practice.

The PhD in Education at OUM is an interdisciplinary doctoral program designed to meet the needs of educators in various positions. The requirements for the PhD programme include completing coursework for two modules; Educational Research Methodology and Doctoral Seminar. Both these modules focus on developing knowledge and expertise in conducting high quality research using quantitative and qualitative methods. Candidates are also required to prepare a research proposal for the Proposal Defence, where both oral and written work will be assessed.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will enjoy unrestricted access to OUM Digital Library where we have a collection of close to 100,000 e-books and an extensive collection of academic journals.

Our core mission in the PhD programme is to produce scholars who can and will use research to contribute to understanding and improving education. The programme prepares you to become a researcher in the area you are passionate about, guided by the goal of having a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice. Graduates of the programme will be given opportunities to discover exemplary educational practices through research that may contribute to future advancement in education.

Assessment will be based on performance in the two modules and successful completion of the dissertation proposal and final thesis.

• What is the core mission of PhD programme? Our core mission in the PhD programme is to produce scholars who can and will use their knowledge on research to contribute to the understanding and improving of education.
• A comprehensive research methodology course covering all aspects of educational research settings and data analysis procedures.
• Scheduled classes/seminars for the Educational Research Methodology and Doctoral Seminars in the 1st semester. Assignments are graded and students need to pass a minimum of Grade B before proceeding to the next stage.

Syria to Malaysia to Ann Arbor: Alaa Shahin Goes From Open Online Course to U-M Graduate

Alaa Shahin first took Colleen Van Lent’s open online course; next, she became a U-M student and Van Lent’s assistant as a graduate student; now she works as a young advocate for women in tech

Alaa Shahin was always willing to start over, but she was never willing to give up on her dream of a world-class education. Her journeys led her from her homeland in Syria to Malaysia, and then to the U.S. Each time, she felt like she was not just starting her education over, but starting her life from scratch. Each time she was also determined to persevere.  

Born and raised in Syria, education was always a primary focus. Alaa was an exceptional student, and she always yearned for more. After fleeing conflict in Syria, she relocated to Malaysia, where she was determined to continue her education. Eager to find a way to continue learning, Alaa enrolled in on-demand open online courses to build up skills while pursuing scholarship opportunities for further study.

She eventually obtained that scholarship, but was on the move again after just one year, relocating to the U.S. From there, she said, she spent two years in community college while applying to universities in Michigan. Furthering her education had always been her plan, but she didn’t know where or how it would come. But Alaa continued learning, and continued applying to colleges, and she continued taking courses offered by the University of Michigan. 

Those online courses opened a path for her to not only continue learning but led her down a path that went from Malaysia to the U.S. to being a student at U-M in Ann Arbor, and eventually to work for the organization that built the open online courses she first discovered. 

Web Design for Everybody 

As a student, Alaa had always been interested in exploring STEM fields. She said she wanted to seek a top-notch education. Because of the war, that was not possible to find at home in Syria. 

When Alaa stumbled on the “Web Design for Everybody: Basics of Web Development & Coding” course series, taught by Colleen van Lent, teaching professor and lecturer at U-M’s School of Information , she immediately fell in love. It was not only van Lent’s clarity of instruction but also her personal presence, which she could feel even though they were separated by a computer screen.

“At first, I didn’t know the course was from the University of Michigan. I just saw a web design course that seemed to cover everything. So I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ It was my first ever online course, and I just fell in love,” Shahin said. “Van Lent’s personality and her way of bringing things to reality is so appreciated.”  

She liked how van Lent interacted with her students and said the relationship she formed with her instructor was a huge factor in her success. The clarity with which van Lent explained complex topics was impressive, and the flexibility of the online format helped Alaa transcend language barriers and let her progress at her own pace. 

“Once I finished the course, I took the certification and was like, yeah, I love this; this is what I want to do,” Shahin said.

The online format spoke to her, and she took more courses. Eventually, she realized where her education was taking her – the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus, and that would eventually lead her to the School of Information.  

From Online to In-Person

Upon being accepted to the university, Alaa scanned the available courses. She saw one of her first classes would be with van Lent. 

“I was like, oh my gosh! It’s the same professor; I knew it was the same university, but now I can take a course with the same professor. I told myself, ‘I have to take this course in person!'”

This would later become Alaa’s opportunity to serve as van Lent’s graduate student instructor (GSI). 

“One of the best parts about teaching is watching students create a community, and Alaa was a community builder,” van Lent said of having Shahin as both a student and a GSI. “She had a way of asking questions that helped me to explain concepts more clearly to everyone.  When she applied as a GSI the following semester, I knew that I was going to be lucky to have her in my classroom.”

First inspired by van Lent, who made her online learning experience so impactful, she was now shadowing and assisting the person she used to only see on her computer screen back in Malaysia. Her interest in web design evolved into a passion for user experience design. She realized her positive experience with the online course was no accident–it was because of the thoughtful way the course was built and the technology utilized for online learners.

After so many stops and starts in recent years, Shahin decided to waste no time. She obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the School of Information in three years while continuing to use her free time to take online courses to learn and explore specific skills in technology. 

Working at the Center for Academic Innovation 

In another pivotal turn, Alaa’s journey landed her where van Lent’s course was built – the Center for Academic Innovation as a Student Fellow. 

Cait Hayward, the center’s director of research and analytics, spoke to students where Alaa was serving as a GSI. That led to a coffee meeting with Hayward, where she learned about user experience design and other opportunities available to student fellows at the center. 

Shahin applied for and got a position as a student fellow. At the center, Alaa could take the concepts she learned on Michigan Online and use them in her fellowship role on the research and analytics team to help the center advance the future of education. 

Not only was Shahin in Ann Arbor as a University of Michigan student, but she was working with her most-admired online instructor, working at the center where her favorite courses were built, exploring her passion for user experience, and presenting research among peers and mentors.   

As part of her work, she conducted more than 100 hours of interviews about their use of ECoach, a tailored communication platform to help students succeed in large lecture courses where one-on-one instruction is impossible. It required conducting a series of regular interviews with students using the tool. This was a task made for a people person like Alaa. 

“We wanted to interview these students to improve the ECoach platform. So I said, you know, I love talking to people, so why not let me do the interviews? And actually, after four months, I did 104 interviews. That is wild to me when I look back.”

She was later able to contribute to the evaluation of the data collected. She presented findings at the center’s annual research showcase, inviting researchers from U-M’s campus and beyond to present and discuss their findings. 

‘It Changed Everything for Me’ 

As a young woman from Syria, Alaa said she could never have imagined moving to America as a student and getting an education at the University of Michigan. She said friends back home were “obsessed” with the university and its online classes, so her friends and family were ecstatic when she announced she would attend U-M in person. 

It was a dream come true, and Alaa said the experience as a graduate student and Student Fellow was more than she could have imagined. 

Alaa has always yearned for more and kept chasing her educational dreams no matter where they led her. Now, she works as an education officer at Odoo in Dubai, UAE. This latest move was not forced on her because of instability at home. Instead, it was a move she wanted to make.

She also gives back in ways that allow her to serve as an example and inspire other young women in the tech field. She is taking part in the Google Global Ambassador for Women Techmakers program and as a facilitator for the #IAmRemarkable initiative, helping to inspire and celebrate the accomplishments of women in tech. 

Shahin earned everything, every step of the way. Among those first steps, when everything seemed uncertain, was asking herself what she was passionate about and seeking out online learning opportunities to explore that passion. 

 “You could study anything you want, any time you want, in any location you want. It changed everything for me.”
