In 2019, the primary aim of this initiative is to increase awareness about reproductive health problems among the people. Moreover, this is because of the fact that a large number of pregnant women yield to poor reproductive health.

According to researches, every day 800 women die during the process of birthing a baby. Hence, the primary aim and importance of this day are to get more and more people to know how to boost their reproductive health. Also, it pays attention to the importance of family planning.

In essence, World population day promotes emphasising the significance and urgency of population-related concerns. NGOs, schools, colleges, and other organisations celebrate it to raise awareness of family planning and healthy pregnancies.

I decided to celebrate this day by taking part in various activities that aimed to promote sustainable living and highlight the importance of responsible population growth.

First, I educated myself about the issue of overpopulation and its impact on the environment and our quality of life. I read articles and watched documentaries to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. I also joined online forums and discussions to engage with others and share my thoughts and ideas.

Next, I took action in my own life by reducing my carbon footprint. I turned off lights when leaving a room, unplugged electronics when not in use, and walked or rode my bike instead of driving. I also made a conscious effort to reduce my waste by using reusable bags, water bottles, and containers.

I also took part in a beach clean-up event, where I joined a group of volunteers to remove litter and debris from the shoreline. The event was a great way to make a tangible difference in my community and raise awareness about the impact of overpopulation on the environment.

Finally, I shared my experiences and what I learned with my family and friends. I encouraged them to take similar steps in their own lives and to spread the word about the importance of responsible population growth.

We have assembled here to discuss our plans about the celebration of World Population Day. Our hospital celebrates this day annually on 11th July . It is basically to reiterate the human right formulated for family planning. It was started by the United Nation in order to encourage events, activities and information to make this right a reality across the world.

We also aim to increase the awareness of the people in our locality related to different issues based on population such as the value of family planning along with gender equality, maternal health, poverty, need of population control and human rights. Basically, World Population Day is celebrated globally by community organisations, business groups and individuals in various ways. Different types of activities are organised such as educational information sessions, seminar discussions, essay competitions, displaying the charts, slogans, ppts, banners, and many more.

It’s a global observance phenomenon, not a public holiday though, it is highly important that everyone is aware of the importance and issues related to family planning and population control.

Being a charitable hospital, it becomes our social responsibility to prevent and empower today’s youth and thus we celebrate World Population Day with different objectives. We want to provide them with the detailed knowledge about sexuality and the importance of getting married at a matured age so that they are able to understand and fulfil their responsibilities at the same time. We would also educate youngsters by employing youth-friendly, informative and reasonable methods in order to evade unwanted or unplanned pregnancies. We also want to educate people to remove the gender stereotypes from our society. It is also important that the youth of today, especially women are aware about the pregnancy related diseases and illness if married at a minor age. Thus, we will educate them in order to raise awareness in rural, semi-urban and urban areas. We’ll also educate them about various diseases that are sexually transmitted like HIV, AIDS, etc in order to prevent them and others from various infections.

We are also focusing on gender equality across India especially in rural areas. Thus, we are demanding for the implementation of some stringent and effective laws and policies that protect the rights of girl child. Also, every child should have an equal access to education irrespective of gender and class.

Therefore, we have concrete plans to visit villages, remote areas, etc and organize mobile school for girls so that we can educate them and make them aware of the population control. Our objective is not to suppress human rights as family planning and deciding upon the number of kids is an individual choice; but we aim to create wakefulness and make people aware of the benefits of having limited number of kids so that parents can give good upbringing to their kids and the girl child doesn’t have to compromise on a basic standard of living like food, clothing, shelter and education.

Through this forum, we appeal to all of you to come forward and join hands in this social cause and make our country more developed and self-reliant.

Good Morning to all!

I welcome the world celebrating World Population Day, and I want to say thanks to the organizers of these events to invite men to these remarkable moments and express my views. As you know, every year, we have been celebrating this day with equal enthusiasm and a new theme.

In 1989, the United Nations Development Program was recommended by the Governing Council to mark World Population Day on 11 July to highlight the importance and urgency of population-related issues.

Since the establishment of our lots of NGOs, we have been fighting against female foeticide . Girls are as important as boys, and perhaps even more so because the whole of humanity depends on their existence, and they help in maintaining the balance of our society.

There was a significant reduction in the number of women up to a few years earlier than men. Due to the increase in crime rate, female foeticide, rape, illiteracy, and gender-based discrimination, women are always suppressed. It is crucial that many start saving girls in order to equal the boy-girl ratio.

We travel to rural and semi-urban areas to identify cases where women, unfortunately, fall prey to the evil forces present in our community. Forced prostitution, domestic violence , female trafficking, and female discrimination have become severe threats to the safety of women. So we try to provide possible support to women who are living in disadvantaged conditions so that they can free themselves from these inhumane conditions.

We also try to make them aware of the various acts implemented by the government on gender equality, domestic violence act 2005, proper education , ban on female infanticide, unethical trafficking (prevention) act, etc. to keep them safe in our community.

The absence of education is one of the main reasons behind this ignorance. In today’s society, girls are earning high status and fame and making the nation proud, like their male counterparts. Every girl child has the right to gain proper education & to be self-sufficient.

Population control and family planning enable parents to learn how to give birth to the right number of children so that they can provide the proper education to their children. It is, therefore, crucial that girls who want to avoid pregnancy use effective and safe contraceptive measures.

We have taken steps to educate women across India, especially in rural areas where there is a lack of awareness and enthusiasm among women . Some women do not want to discuss these matters due to fear and hesitation. We have women colleagues who voluntarily work for the development of such women. They travel in groups, establish mobile schools, health centers, and information centers; Organizes quizzes, debates, etc. urging women to come out of their homes and participate in this mission.

Several NGOs have done a lot of work for women’s development, and many industrialists and business people support us. It has become the prime objective is to make women independent so that they can take important decisions of their life like right marriageable age, right to delivery, right to education, etc.

At last I appeal to young people of my country to come forward and join this mission to make World Population Day a massive success so that the echo of this message may reach in each corner of the world.

Welcome to the celebration of 7 th World Population Day. As you know, like every year we are celebrating this day with equal enthusiasm and new theme. In 1989, the Governing Council of United Nations Development Programme recommended to celebrate World Population Day on 11 th July with the objective to highlight the importance and urgency to population related issues.

As you all know that every year our NGO selects a theme based on population and try to create awareness about the same. So this year’s theme would be gender equality and protection of girl child. Since our establishment, we have been fighting against female foeticide. Girls are equally important as that of boys and perhaps even more because the entire humanity owes its existence to them and they help strike a social balance in our society. There was a great reduction in the number of women compared to men, till few years ago. Due to an increase in crimes rate against women such as dowry deaths, female foeticide, rape, forced illiteracy, gender-based discrimination, etc women have always been suppressed. In order to equalize the boy-girl ratio, it is important that people start saving the girl child.

We travel in rural and semi-urban areas in order to identify such cases where women unfortunately become the victims of evil forces in our society. Female trafficking, domestic violence, forced prostitution and female foeticide have become serious threats for the safety of women. Therefore, we try to provide possible assistance to women who are living under deprived conditions so that they can liberate themselves from these inhuman conditions. Thus, saving a girl child becomes the need of the hour. Each child has the right to get education and be self-reliant. Population control and wise family planning help couples to have an ideal number of children so that every child can get a fair upbringing and education. It is also important that women who want to avoid pregnancy are using effective and safe contraceptive measures.

We have taken steps to educate women all over India, especially in rural areas where there is a lack of awareness and support from their counterpart. Some women don’t want to discuss these matters out of timidity and hesitation. We have female colleagues who work voluntarily for the development of such women. They travel in groups, establish mobile schools, healthcare centre and information centre; organize quizzes, debates, etc where women are urged to come out of their houses and participate in this mission.

Our NGO is greatly supporting women development and there are several industrialists and business tycoons who are supporting us. Our main objective is to make women independent where they can take important decisions of life on their own such as the right marriageable age, childbirth right, education right, etc.

Girls are equally capable of bringing accolades to a family provided they are given uninterrupted education and equal upbringing. Thus, World Population Day also aims at gender equality and women empowerment.

It is important that women in rural and urban areas who want to avoid pregnancy use effective and safe family planning methods. Correct and complete information is very vital in adopting a healthy life.

We have plans to set up health and information camps in various parts of the country, especially in villages and rural areas. This year, we are also planning to organize skits and dramas based on Hindu mythology and epic stories of Durga, Kali, Saraswati and other Gods and Goddesses. Village girls would be trained to perform on these skits. Our Indian culture never differentiated between boy and girl, nor did it suppress women’s rights; this is what we are trying to convey to the people countrywide. In fact, India is a land where goddesses are revered and prayed to; thus little girls are also considered the incarnation of Goddess Durga.

Millions of people around the world will pause on Monday, at least for a moment, to mark Earth Day. It’s an annual event founded by people who hoped to stir activism to clean up and preserve a planet that is now home to some 8 billion humans and assorted trillions of other organisms.

Here are answers to some common questions about Earth Day and how it came to be:

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE EARTH DAY?

Earth Day has its roots in growing concern over pollution in the 1960s, when author Rachel Carson’s 1962 book “Silent Spring,” about the pesticide DDT and its damaging effects on the food chain, hit bestseller lists and raised awareness about nature’s delicate balance.

But it was a senator from Wisconsin, Democrat Gaylord Nelson, who had the idea that would become Earth Day. Nelson had long been concerned about the environment when a massive offshore oil spill sent millions of gallons onto the southern California coast in 1969. Nelson, after touring the spill site, had the idea of doing a national “teach-in” on the environment, similar to teach-ins being held on some college campuses at the time to oppose the war in Vietnam.

Nelson and others, including activist Denis Hayes, worked to expand the idea beyond college campuses, with events all around the country, and came up with the Earth Day name.

WHY WAS APRIL 22 CHOSEN FOR EARTH DAY?

A history of the movement by EarthDay.org, where Hayes remains board chair emeritus, says the date of the first Earth Day — April 22, 1970 — was chosen because it fell on a weekday between spring break and final exams and the aim was to attract as many students as possible.

IS EARTH DAY A REAL HOLIDAY?

It has. The overwhelming public response to the first Earth Day is credited with adding pressure for the U.S. Congress to do more to address pollution, and it did, passing landmark legislation including the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. More broadly, it’s seen as the birth of the modern environmental movement. In later years, Earth Day expanded to become a truly global event. It now claims to have motivated action in more than 192 countries.

In 2000, Earth Day began taking aim at climate change, a problem that has grown rapidly more urgent in recent years.

This year’s Earth Day is focusing on the threat that plastics pose to our environment, with a call to end all single-use plastic and find replacements for their use so they can quickly be phased down.

THE PRESIDENT: Hello, hello, hello. (Applause.) Thank you, Za’Nyia, for sharing your story that embodies the spirit of Earth Day. On this day 54 years ago, with literally toxic rivers burning, air filled with pollution, millions of Americans from every age and background rallied together to stand for our environment and for future generations. I got to know Senator Gordan Nelson — Gaylord Nelson, excuse me — from Wisconsin when I got to the Senate. And he organized the first Earth Day. I later introduced the first climate bill in the United States Senate. And all these years later, as president, I was able to sign into law the Inflation Reduction Act, the most si- — (applause) — the most significant [climate] investment every anywhere in the history of the world, and we’re just getting started. Earth Day pushed the country forward, leading to Environmental Protection Agency, and we’re fortunate enough to have with us the EPA Administrator Michael Regan. Where are you, Michael? (Applause.) Stand up. Get up. Get up. I stole him from Carolina. We’re not letting him go back. (Laughter.) And we’re joined by our great Secretary of Interior, Deb Haaland. (Applause.) Deb, stand up. The first Native American ever to serve in a Cabinet. (Applause.) And AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith — Michael, where are you? There y- — (applause) — joined by members of the Congress, including Ed Markey of Massachusetts, who, by the way, thought this was an important idea a long time ago and talked about dealing with the Climate Corps — one — needed one. Ed, we owe you a lot, pal. We owe you a lot. (Applause.) And Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who understands what beautiful territory looks like up in Vermont and has done everything in his power to protect it. Bernie, you’re the best. (Applause.) And Representative Ocasio-Cortez of New York — you know, I learned a long time ago: Listen to that lady. (Laughter.) Listen to that lady. We’re going to talk more about another part of the world too, real quickly. Look, joined by all of you advocates and community leaders, that’s — this is a good day. It’s fitting to be here in Pric- — Prince William Forest Park. On March 31, 1933, during the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roose- — Roosevelt created the the Climate [Civilian] Conservation Corps, which is talked about a little bit, to put Americans to work to conserve our country’s natural resources. Thousands — thousands of young Americans from the Civilian Conservation Corps built this park, providing jobs, recreation, hope, and healing at the time. We know today we face another kind of existential threat that requires equally bold and clear action. As President, I’ve seen the devastating toll of climate firsthand. Since I’ve been president, I’ve flown over all the major fires and the thousands upon thousands of acres that have burned flat by wil- — wildfires — more acres than the entire state of Maryland combined. I’ve met with families whose homes were wiped off the map by devastating hurricanes, floods, and storms. Last year was Earth Day’s [the Earth’s] hottest day [year] on record. And over the last two years, natural disasters and extreme weather in America have caused $270 billion — $270 billion in damages. And the impacts we’re seeing — decades in the making because of inaction — are only going to get worse, more frequent, ferocious, and costly. But since Kamala and I took office, we’ve been acting. And today, I’m proud to announce two major steps forward. The first: Energy costs are among the biggest costs for families to budget, particular poor and middle-income families. In fact, low-income families can spend up to 30 percent of their paychecks on their energy bills. It’s outrageous. To reduce family energy costs for folks with low and moderate incomes today, the Environmental Protection Agency will invest $7 billion from my Inflation Reduction Act in a new program called “Solar for All.” (Applause.) It will award grants — 60 grants across the country to states, territories, Tribal governments, municipalities, and nonprofits to develop programs that enable low-income and disadvantaged communities to benefit from residential solar power. And it’s a big deal. This new Solar for All program means that 900,000 households — 900,000 will have solar on their rooftops for the first time and soon. Millions of families will save over $400 a year on utility bills. And that’s $350 million nationwide. My dad said it matters what’s there at the end of the — end of the paycheck. But a month is out, do you have anything left? It means we’ll cut more than 5 million metric tons of carbon pollution annually. And, folks, Solar for All will give us more breathing room and cleaner breathing room. It’s going to also create 200,000 good-paying and union jobs over the five — (applause) — over the five years in communities that need them most: fenceline communities. You know, as I always say, I think about climate — when I think about it, I think not only about health and safety, but I think about jobs. And that brings me to my second announcement. Last fall, I talked about a historic new program that my administration is launching, with the help of my colleagues on my right here, called the Cl- — the American Climate Corps. As I said — and I’m not being solicitous — Ed — Ed Markey talked about that long before — long before. It’s patterned after the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Peace Corps and America Corps [AmeriCorps]. Like them, it brings out the best in young people to do what’s best for America and will put tens of thousands of young people to work at the forefront of our climate resilience and energy future — clean energy future. Today, I’m proud to announce that Americans across the country can now apply — now apply to become the first members of the American Climate Corps. We’re recru- — (applause) — we’re recruiting for over 2,000 positions in 36 states to start with — in Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, with many on the way. You’ll get paid to fight climate change, learning how to install those solar panels, fight wildfires, rebuild wetlands, weatherize homes, and so much more that’s going to protect the environment and build a clean energy economy. To ensure a pathway to good union jobs and careers, you’ll have access to pre-apprenticeship training through a new partnership we’re announcing today with the North American Building Trade Unions [Trades Union]. And when y- — (applause) — As you may remember, when I announced in 2020, I initially didn’t announce my climate position until I talked to the unions, because unions were all ag- — they thought climate cost them jobs. Well, guess what? IBEW stepped up, and they all stepped up, and now our strongest support comes from union members. (Applause.) When you finish your service — when you finish your term of service, you’ll also be eligible for a streamlined path to federal government jobs related to climate and clean energy. We’re also announcing a new collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies that puts American Climate Corps members in energy communities — like former coalmining communities, power plant communities — that have powered our nation but have been fenceline communities that have hurt very badly for generations. Today — today’s announcement builds upon an unprecedented and historic action we’ve already taken to tackle the climate crisis, deliver environmental justice, and build a clean energy future. Just look at the last few weeks alone. To ensure clean energy [air], we issued new standards for chemical plants that emit toxic pollution. Now, (inaudible). And because of the Clean Air Act, we’re going to reduce the number of people at risk for cancer in fenceline communities who have been smothered for decades by pollution by 96 percent, according to the studies. And by the way, parenthetically, you know, my state of Delaware, which everybody thinks is a wealthy state — I lived in a place called Claymont, Delaware. It’s in that arc that goes up into Philadelphia — into Pennsylvania and to the Delaware River. More — more energy plants, more oil refin- — refineries than anywhere, including Houston, Texas. And I lived in just — literally, the school I went to was literally a quarter mile from that border. And the prevailing winds were southeast, where we lived. So, there was never any incentive for the Pennsylvanians to move to do something, but it affected Delaware. And we had the highest cancer rate in the 1970s of any nation — any state in the nation. And guess what? A lot of us from — me included, ended up with bronchial asthma and many other diseases. Fenceline communities are the ones we have to help first, because they’ve been taking the brunt of all this. To ensure clean drinking water, we issued the first-ever national drinking water standard that’ll protect people from exposure to harmful substances known as “forever chemicals.” And after 30 years of inadequate protections, we finally are going to put a ban on asbestos, which we know causes cancer. (Applause.) It’s all part of a plan to reassert America’s climate leadership. We rejoined the Paris Agreement and sparked a domestic clean energy manufacturing boom, providing incentives for 80,000 farmers to implement climate-smart agricultural practice. So, plant what absorbs carbon from the air and get them — pay them for doing it. We’ve quadrupled the number of electric vehicles sold, and 11,000 dealerships have now signed up to sell more. We’re modernizing our infrastructure with better roads and highways and energy grids and more so they can withstand and recover from extreme weather. Already underway, we’re replacing every single lead pipe in America so everyone can turn on a faucet, home or at school, and drink clean water that doesn’t contain lead. (Applause.) We’re also reduting [reducing] flood risk for communities, improving drought re- — resilience, and conserving 41 million acres of our most precious and sacred lands and water.

I committed that I’m going to try to reserve — take — of all non-developed land and waters, we’re going to take 30 percent of it by 2030 and make sure it is conserved, period. We’re well on our way. (Applause.) We’ve already attracted nearly $700 billion in private sector investments in advanced manufacturing and clean energy, creating tens of thousands of jobs here in America. And all across the board, we’re lifting up communities and workers too often left out in urban, rural, suburban, Tribal communities all across the country. But, folks, despite the overwhelming devastation in red and blue states, there are still those who deny climate is in crisis. Our MAGA Republican friends don’t seem to think it’s in crisis. They don’t — they don’t want our — they actually want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides the funding for a vast majority of these projects, and roll back clean air — protections for clean air and clean water. And y- — I’m not going to go into it now, but you — I’m not making it up. It’s real. Just listen to what they say.

Anyone in or out of government who willfully denies the impacts of climate change is condemning the American people to a very dangerous future — and the world, I might add. They want to take us backwards, sideline our workers, let China and others lead the race for clean energy. I’m determined — absolutely determined — that we move forward — we move forward. (Applause.) Let me close with this. In 1933 — and it was referenced by the congresslady — that when Roosevelt outlined the Civilian Conservation Corps, he said, quote — and I’m quoting — “More important than the material gains will be the moral and spiritual value of such work.” He always put it in the context that went beyond just what the immediate need was.

I’d say the same holds true for what we’re doing here today. It has a moral imperative. And I’ve never been more optimistic about America’s future. We just have to remember who we are. We’re the United States of America. And there is nothing — nothing beyond our capacity if we work together. (Applause.) And so, happy Earth Day, folks. (Applause.) And God bless you all. And may God protect our troops. We’re going to get this done, I promise you, come hell or high water.

Earth Day takes place every year on 22 April when we are encouraged to come together to work on solutions to give our planet a healthier future.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges to the health of our planet, which also impacts human health worldwide.
By taking action to mitigate climate change, we can safeguard the well-being of current and future generations and preserve the beauty and diversity of life on Earth.

By 2050, climate change will place immense strain on global healthcare systems, causing 14.5 million deaths and $12.5 trillion in economic losses. This was the warning from the Quantifying the impact of climate change on human health report published in January 2024 by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Oliver Wyman,

As we celebrate Earth Day , it's essential to reflect on the beauty of our planet and on the challenges it faces, particularly concerning climate change. The environmental effects of climate change are widely discussed, but its impact on human health is significant and often overlooked.

Here, we delve into the profound effects climate change has on our well-being and explore why addressing these issues is crucial for the health of planet Earth and all of its inhabitants. There are five key issues related to climate change that are already impacting human health.

1. Extreme weather events

Climate change intensifies extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, heatwaves, floods and droughts. Forty million people in Africa are living in severe drought conditions and droughts are on the rise in more temperate climes too. Almost 40% of the lower 48 states in the United States and 17% of the European population are facing drought, threatening food and water security.

These extreme weather events can have devastating consequences on human health, leading to injuries, displacement and even loss of life. Increased heatwaves, for example, can exacerbate heat-related illnesses and strain healthcare systems. Heat waves also come with a huge economic toll. It is estimated that $7.1 trillion of productivity could be lost by 2050 as a result of heat waves.

2. Air pollution

The burning of fossil fuels and other human activities contribute to air pollution, which is exacerbated by climate change. Wildfires increasingly are making the news headlines because they cause immense destruction of property and loss of life and livestock, but they also aggravate air pollution. Poor air quality is linked to respiratory diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis and lung cancer. Additionally, pollutants, such as particulate matter and ozone, can worsen cardiovascular health, leading to heart attacks and strokes. Air pollution could lead to 6 to 9 million premature deaths per year by 2060.

The Global Health and Strategic Outlook 2023 highlighted that there will be an estimated shortage of 10 million healthcare workers worldwide by 2030.

The World Economic Forum’s Centre for Health and Healthcare works with governments and businesses to build more resilient, efficient and equitable healthcare systems that embrace new technologies.

3. Vector-borne diseases

Climate change affects the distribution and behaviour of disease-carrying vectors, such as mosquitoes and ticks. Warmer temperatures and altered precipitation patterns create favourable conditions for the spread of vector-borne diseases, like malaria, dengue fever, Lyme disease and Zika virus, to moderate and previously less affected climate zones, such as Europe and the United States.

These diseases pose significant threats to public health, especially in vulnerable communities with limited access to healthcare. By 2050, an additional 500 million people may be at risk of exposure to vector-borne diseases.

Changes in climate patterns disrupt agricultural systems, leading to decreased crop yields, food shortages and compromised food safety. In Sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia and Central America, around 80 million people will be at risk of hunger by 2050.

Moreover, extreme weather events can contaminate water sources, contributing to waterborne diseases, such as cholera and dysentery. Food and water insecurity not only jeopardize physical health but also contribute to malnutrition and widening socio-economic disparities.

5. Mental health impacts

Climate change-induced disasters and environmental degradation can take a toll on mental health too. The loss of homes, livelihoods and communities due to natural disasters can cause psychological distress, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additionally, the uncertainty and existential threat posed by climate change can lead to eco-anxiety and feelings of helplessness.

If climate change continues to impact human health across these five vectors, it is predicted that the total cumulative healthcare system costs to provide treatment for diseases caused by climate change could reach over $1.1 trillion by 2050 . North and Central America are expected to have to cover nearly half the cost of this because of higher hospitalization and treatment costs in these regions. And, with climate-related disasters disproportionately impacting Asia, it will also have to shoulder a lot of this financial and medical burden

Addressing the health impacts of climate change requires urgent action at individual, community and global levels. Transitioning to renewable energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable agriculture and investing in resilient healthcare infrastructure are crucial steps in mitigating these challenges. Furthermore, prioritizing adaptation strategies and enhancing public health preparedness can help communities withstand and recover from climate-related disasters.

This Earth Day, let's recognize the intrinsic connection between planetary health and human health. By taking decisive action to mitigate climate change and protect our environment, we safeguard the well-being of current and future generations and preserve the beauty and diversity of life on Earth. Together, we can build a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

Healthy and resilient societies

The World Economic Forum has been active in climate action for over a decade, including initiatives such as the Alliance for Clean Air , the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders and the Forum's work towards nature-positive industry sector transition, amongst others.

These workstreams and activities have focused on climate change mitigation and transition towards net-zero conditions. However, it is recognized that historically, there has been a critical underinvestment in the health implications of climate change, with only 0.5% of multilateral climate funding allocated towards the protection or improvement of human health.

The launch of the Forum’s Climate and Health Initiative at the start of 2023, ahead of the first COP meeting with a dedicated health day, was designed to address this lack of focus on health.

The Initiative’s mission is to help build a healthier and more resilient society to the health impacts of climate change through multistakeholder and cross-sector collaboration and systems transformation. The initiative aims to achieve this through three strategic pillars:

1. Advocacy and visibility

Convene and amplify voices to advance a unified global approach by building a multisector community of thought leaders to deliver a high-impact outreach and engagement campaign.

2. Evidence gathering to catalyze action

Map the research and data on the impact of climate change on health, with a focus on identifying the most critical gaps in understanding and how partners can address these gaps in knowledge.

3. Resilience and preparedness

Identify and accelerate evidence-based approaches to mitigating the health impacts of climate change across sectors. Unlock finances and incentivize climate and health investment.

Earth Day 2024: Everything to know about the annual celebration of our planet

E very year, Earth Day offers people around the world an opportunity to focus on our planet, its wellbeing and the many challenges facing it.

From industrial pollution and carbon emissions to the collapse in biodiversity and the climate crisis , there is no shortage of all-important issues to tackle.

The global environmental holiday, which takes place every 22 April, is marked by an estimated one billion people around the world, according to EarthDay.org , from schoolchildren to world leaders.

The occasion is intended to serve both as a reminder of the threats to our planet and a chance to appreciate the splendour the Earth has to offer.

Here’s everything you need to know about the day, its history and what is happening in 2024.

What is Earth Day about?

The annual day aims to draw attention to both the wonder and fragility of our natural world and to encourage public interest in environmental activism , particularly among the young.

“Earth Day is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, encouraging us to come together and take action for a healthier planet and brighter future,” its official site states .

“Through various events, toolkits, and initiatives, we aim to raise awareness, inspire change, and foster a deeper connection with nature.”

Its organisers call for people of the world to unite to “to protect the Earth today and for generations to come” and to advocate for “a more sustainable world”.

What is the history of Earth Day?

The initial idea for the day came in response to a 1969 oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California.

In response to that disaster, US senator Gaylord Nelson sought to inspire a popular movement in favour of the environment as strong as that then thriving in opposition to the Vietnam War .

His organising efforts, with the assistance of Harvard graduate student Denis Hayes, led to the first Earth Day in 1970 – which saw 20m people across the US participating – around 10 per cent of the country’s population at the time.

Within a year, US president Richard Nixon had created the Environmental Protection Agency – a new branch of the federal government. The first Earth Day also preceded a wave of environmental legislation passed in the US in the early 1970s, including the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act and Endangered Species Act.

Earth Day became an international campaign in 1990, spreading to 141 countries and, by 2000, had reached nearly every corner of the globe, inspiring initiatives to encourage replanting to combat deforestation and sustainable farming practices to reduce the use of harmful chemicals in agriculture, among many others.

In recent years, the day has become something of a yearly milestone for the global environmental movement.

In 2016, the historic Paris climate agreement started gathering signatory countries on Earth Day, for example, the resulting international pact aiming to limit global warming to “well below” 2C above pre-industrial levels.

In recent years, the celebration has faced some criticism, however, notably from famed activist Greta Thunberg , who has accused it of providing corporations with an opportunity to engage in “ greenwashing ”, which is to say making overstated claims about their business’s environmental credentials without actually making positive changes.

“We all know greenwashing is happening and it is infuriating,” Earth Day president Kathleen Rogers told BBC News .

“It’s not an issue we’ve caused, but we know Earth Day is used cynically by some businesses to misuse the ethos of sustainability for their own gain.”

What is happening on Earth Day 2024?

Every year, Earth Day is given a theme and this year it is “Planet vs Plastics” , which is intended to draw attention to the impact plastic pollution has not just on the environment but on human health too.

The UN is expected to agree a landmark treaty on plastics later this year while more than 50 countries have called for an end to plastic pollution by 2040.

Earth Day’s organisers want to go further than that, however, and have called for a 60 per cent reduction in the production of all plastics by that same year.

They are encouraging participants to attend clean-up events in their local area and have provided a searchable map to enable budding activists to find events taking place nearby.
