Educational Value

Kids familiar with the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale can compare this story to other versions. Each chapter opens with a quote from Jack the Giant Killer , adapted by Joseph Jacobs in the late 19th century.

Positive Messages

Part of being great is knowing when to step aside and listen to others, even those smaller than you. Everyone feels small sometimes, even giants. Actions take more effort than words. Being beautiful is no guarantee of being loved. There's not much use for gold when you have everything you need, such as food, shelter, and family. There's magic in growing things, and keeping close ties to the land yields treasure greater than gold.

Positive Role Models

Jack is a mischievous troublemaker but doesn't have bad intentions. He learns to empathize with those he's played tricks on and doesn't want to make people or animals feel bad anymore. He's brave and clever and learns that his annoying little sister has valuable ideas and talents too. Sister Annabelle is a friend to everyone, able to bring out the best in others. Jack's mother scolds him a lot, but both parents are loving.

Violence & Scariness

Frequent peril from fantasy creatures such as giants and pixies. People being crushed and eaten by giants mentioned many times. A few fights with punching and hitting. A bleeding injury mentioned.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Liesl Shurtliff 's Jack: The True Story of Jack & the Beanstalk is another fractured fairy tale from the author of Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin . It follows the traditional story with a few alterations, most notably that Jack is 12 years old. Some characters from Rump appear, but it's a stand-alone story. Expect fantasy violence from being in frequent peril from giant humans and animals as well as magical pixies; a few fights include punches and hits. Jack learns empathy and changes his behavior. Kids can be encouraged to think about the value of growing things and being content with having enough instead of being obsessed with wanting more.

What's the Story?

Giants descend from the sky, destroying everything in their wake and taking the village's food, crops, and animals back up into the sky with them. Worst of all, they take Jack's father. Hoping to find a way up through the clouds before his father gets eaten, Jack plants some magic beans. When the beanstalk grows up into the Blue and dirt starts falling from the sky, Jack starts climbing. Up above the clouds, he finds a whole kingdom of giants. If he can avoid being eaten himself, either by the giants or by any one of the many giant toads, spiders, mice, cats, and dogs that inhabit the giant world, can he find his father and a way back down the beanstalk?

Is It Any Good?

JACK: THE TRUE STORY OF JACK & THE BEANSTALK will keep kids on the edges of their seats as they follow the adventures of the relatable hero through the scary world of giants. There are plenty of laughs along the way, but Jack's more action-oriented style will keep the pages turning. Some favorite, and not-so-favorite, characters from Rump make return appearances, and kids will enjoy looking at them from a new perspective.

Many favorite fairy tales also are referenced, and kids will stay engaged recognizing Tom Thumb, the old woman who lived in a shoe, and the shoemaker and the elves, among others. The modern, easygoing language and fast-moving action make it an entertaining choice either to read aloud or to keep kids engrossed and reading on their own.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about why fairy tales are always popular. Why do we love them so much?

What other versions of Jack and the Beanstalk have you read or seen? What's different about this one? Do you have a favorite?

Did you read Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstltskin ? How is Jack different or the same? Which story do you like better?

'Jack and the Beanstalk' review — an all-star pantomime justifies the beans

Sophie Thomas

There are giants in the sky! And there are performing giants galore in Jack and the Beanstalk , the latest installment in a Palladium pantomime tradition that celebrates the best of old-school British humour with enough razzle dazzle to light up the West End.

Once again, director Michael Harrison sprinkles pantomime magic in the home of variety entertainment. A thinly-veiled story — in this case, Jack sells his cow for five magic beans and ends up with a beanstalk in his backyard, only for the gang to rescue King Nigel from the giant — acts as a ruse for filthy jokes, vaudevillian skits, and silliness. When the audience holler, clap, and cheer their way through two and a half hours of unadultered joy, it doesn't matter if the story could actually be told in 10 minutes; this lavish pantomime delivers the goods.

Julian Clary is back as the loose “Spirit of the Beans”, parading around the stage in a variety of Hugh Durrant’s spectacularly designed bean-related outfits (French, runner, Mexican, Heinz) and enough phallic jokes to supply a lifetime of Christmas crackers. He keeps the story pulse going alongside “budget Miriam Margolyes” Dawn French as a vulgar Dame Trot, the squeaky-clean Paul Zerdin as silly Simon, Gary Wilmot as Queen Nigella, and Nigel Havers as the “principal character” King Nigel.

Hallelujah then to Alexandra Burke , who plays a vampy, vicious giant's wife Mrs. Blunderbore in her Palladium debut — a trio of animatronic giants are her “bad boys” now. West End stars Louis Gaunt and Natalie McQueen delight as Jack and Jill, and Rob Madge a-moo-singly chews the scenery as Pat the Cow, a bovine who dreams of West End stardom. Gaunt and Madge delight in a “Crazy For You” inspired routine; a spritely ensemble dressed as dancing chickens performing Karen Bruce's showstopping choreography is a particular highlight.

Now in its sixth year, the pantomime suffers slightly from its self-awareness and leaning into stale territory. If you’re a newcomer, chances are you won’t get jokes that rely on moments in previous years. You’ve probably seen the skits in a previous iteration too: Paul Zerdin does a five-minute ventriloquist set, Gary Wilmot performs another "list song" (this time listing all the ailments and their respective remedies), and more. But again, this is pantomime, and pantomimes rely on similarities as a comforting way to tell a story. And we all need comforting on these cold winter nights.

There's added special elements this year, in the form of Jack climbing up a 40-feet plus beanstalk that soars up through the rafters — sit in the centre stalls and you may be closer to the beanstalk action than you'd first expect. But ultimately, this year's Palladium pantomime plays into its institution-level status. To quote Stephen Sondheim in Into the Woods , it justifies the beans.

Jack and the Beanstalk is at the London Palladium through 15 January. Book Jack and the Beanstalk tickets on London Theatre.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

How a small fellow solved a big problem.

adapted by Albert Lorenz & illustrated by Albert Lorenz with by Joy Schleh ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 2002

A “Jack” for budding engineers and architects; positing that the giant’s coins, hen and harp are also outsized, Lorenz has the intrepid young thief devise sets of wheels and pulleys from buttons, pins, and string to haul his prizes out of the castle. And what a castle it is—hung about with skills and medieval fittings, viewed in luxuriant, exact detail from multiple perspectives and angles. Children will pore over each outsized spread (and skip Lorenz’s long-winded concluding statement) as they cheer Jack’s victory over not only the towering, snaggle-toothed giant, but a tiger-sized cat, malevolent-looking rats, and other adversaries. The telling combines several versions into a conventional whole, but Jack’s courage and mechanical ingenuity have never been shown to better advantage. (Picture book/folktale. 7-9)

RIVER STORY

RIVER STORY

by Meredith Hooper & illustrated by Bee Willey ‧ RELEASE DATE: June 1, 2000

Trickling, bubbling, swirling, rushing, a river flows down from its mountain beginnings, past peaceful country and bustling city on its way to the sea. Hooper ( The Drop in My Drink , 1998, etc.) artfully evokes the water’s changing character as it transforms from “milky-cold / rattling-bold” to a wide, slow “sliding past mudflats / looping through marshes” to the end of its journey. Willey, best known for illustrating Geraldine McCaughrean’s spectacular folk-tale collections, contributes finely detailed scenes crafted in shimmering, intricate blues and greens, capturing mountain’s chill, the bucolic serenity of passing pastures, and a sense of mystery in the water’s shadowy depths. Though Hooper refers to “the cans and cartons / and bits of old wood” being swept along, there’s no direct conservation agenda here (for that, see Debby Atwell’s River , 1999), just appreciation for the river’s beauty and being. From the here's hank series , vol. 1.

by Henry Winkler ; Lin Oliver ; illustrated by Scott Garrett ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 14, 2014

An uncomplicated opener, with some funny bits and a clear but not heavy agenda.

Hank Zipzer, poster boy for dyslexic middle graders everywhere, stars in a new prequel series highlighting second-grade trials and triumphs.

Hank’s hopes of playing Aqua Fly, a comic-book character, in the upcoming class play founder when, despite plenty of coaching and preparation, he freezes up during tryouts. He is not particularly comforted when his sympathetic teacher adds a nonspeaking role as a bookmark to the play just for him. Following the pattern laid down in his previous appearances as an older child, he gets plenty of help and support from understanding friends (including Ashley Wong, a new apartment-house neighbor). He even manages to turn lemons into lemonade with a quick bit of improv when Nick “the Tick” McKelty, the sneering classmate who took his preferred role, blanks on his lines during the performance. As the aforementioned bully not only chokes in the clutch and gets a demeaning nickname, but is fat, boastful and eats like a pig, the authors’ sensitivity is rather one-sided. Still, Hank has a winning way of bouncing back from adversity, and like the frequent black-and-white line-and-wash drawings, the typeface is designed with easy legibility in mind.

Fe-fi-fo-fum... This giant of a panto will arrive in Aberdeen this festive season.

Question marks covering panto cast faces

Some familiar faces will be returning to Aberdeen this panto season to take to the stage at His Majesty’s Theatre.

The classic tale of Jack and the Beanstalk will be brought to life by last year’s cast, including Scotland’s favourite squaddie Gary: Tank Commander.

Greg McHugh’s much-loved character will entertain the troops – and Granite City audiences – throughout the festive season.

Gary: Tank Commander

Panto favourite Alan McHugh will don his writing and acting hat once again for his 20th year as Aberdeen’s dame .

He penned last year’s production of Sleeping Beauty which delighted crowds with its local banter, musical moments and entertaining characters.

HMT panto favourites return to cast

Alan McHugh as Dame Trot

Dame Trot is certain to bring plenty of laughs alongside comic actor Paul J Corrigan starring as Pat the Cow, while the boos are likely to be aimed at Julie Coombe’s Mrs Blunderbore.

Three of Aberdeen’s homegrown talents complete the cast with Danielle Jam back as The Spirit of the Beans, and Michael Karl-Lewis and Jemma Ferries as Jack and Princess Jill.

Danielle was previously nominated for The Pantomime Awards for her performance in Beauty and the Beast at HMT.

They will all star in Jack and the Beanstalk between Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, January 5.

Chief executive of APA, Sharon Burgess, said: “After a tremendous response to last year’s panto with this spectacular cast, we’re delighted to welcome them back for the gigantic family adventure that is Jack and the Beanstalk.

“We can’t wait to say ‘Hiya!’ again to Gary and the gang for another spectacular Aberdeen panto. Come and join us for some fee-fi-fo-fun this festive season.”

  9. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

One of the most respected British folklorists and stylists (The Owl Service, 1968, Carnegie Medal; Book of British Fairy Tales, 1985) narrates an old favorite in a muscular, forthright style, more succinct than Joseph Jacobs but equally colorful, building to a satisfyingly embellished final tumble for the giant. Kellogg's illustrations are grand: characters are broadly depicted, from a wide-eyed Jack to a truly gruesome ogre with just a hint of Pinkerton to keep him ...
