Biswa Kalyan Rath on staying true to his millennial roots & how laziness brought him to comedy
Biswa Kalyan Rath's story is one that will resonate with a major chunk of people who pursued one thing in life and then went on to do something completely different. The earliest memory we have of Biswa breaking into the scene was him sitting beside Kanan Gill, while the two of them broke down every cringe-worthy movie of the '90s with Pretentious Movie Reviews. Slowly but surely, we saw Biswa's individual videos of stand-up released on YouTube, which not only made us laugh at fruits and the English language but also gave us an insight into the super introverted side of this comedian. Biswa even told us the warped world of his childhood through his hour-long comedy special on Amazon Prime Video called Biswa Mast Aadmi. The comedian then plunged into the world of web series with the first season Laakhon Mein Ek, which showed us the harsh reality of IIT coaching and we later saw him in Comicstaan as a judge. Now, the second season of Laakhon Mein Ek is here and this one revolves around Dr Shreya (Shweta Tripathi) who goes for a medical camp in a village, where the people aren't trusting of government-aided health care. Biswa Kalyan Rath will be playing a role as he did in the last season. Just like the previous season, this season is also going to tell us the story of one individual pursuing their dreams against all odds. The second season released on April 12, 2019, and here is everything you need to know about Laakhon Mein Ek season 2 . But talking of pursuing your dreams, did you know that Biswa is actually an engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur? With the second part of his web series now available, we had to find out the story of Biswa Kalyan Rath, himself. And here's what he had to say in his signature humorous way:
GQ: What made you want to quit engineering and pursue comedy? Was there any parental pressure? Biswa Kalyan Rath: I was and still continue to hold a keen interest in science and engineering. Parental pressure was helpful in that sense. The only problem with science and engineering is that it requires a lot of patience, which I don't have. With comedy, I find instant satisfaction. So, like a true millennial, I go for the instant gratification. In short, laziness brought me to comedy.
GQ: How did your family react to it? Biswa Kalyan Rath: I originally told them I wanted to be a writer. Then a year later I wanted to pursue music, following that year, I told them I'd like to be a graphic designer. And much later, I said comedy. I think they must've thought, “Okay this guy has many hobbies let him do what he wants as long as he is making some money.”
GQ: What is the message that you want to give with season two of Laakhon Mein Ek? Biswa Kalyan Rath: There is no message as such. I just want people to find their own meaning in the show. Hopefully, they will empathize with Dr Shreya and feel her journey.
GQ: Is it difficult to write about serious topics like the script for Laakhon Mein Ek when you are used to writing stand-up? Is there a point where you have to stop yourself from inserting comic elements in the script? Biswa Kalyan Rath: Yes, I have learned from multiple rewritings of season one that it's best not to force comedy into a script. I wouldn't say that writing serious scripts is harder than writing stand up, but they are different. I think there is a right balance between both and I hope to hit it someday.
GQ: Could you tell us a little about the research process behind Laakhon Mein Ek Season 2? Biswa Kalyan Rath: We spoke to a lot of doctors and health professionals. We also hired a researcher and learned that things are much more complex than they seem. We also realised that it's very important to show all the point of views, and only then it would count for a really good show. On location, medical consultants were present throughout to keep an eye on all the procedures. Abhishek Sengupta, the director, was very particular about this.
GQ: How much of the season one was reminiscent of your time studying engineering? BKR: Season one was based on IIT coaching classes, so a lot of the story and characters are from my personal experiences. I would say around 50% is real and 50% is made up.
GQ: What would you say are the biggest challenges of being a comedian and a writer? BKR: (Chuckles) I cannot complain. I really think everybody faces bigger struggles in life than comedians. But some of the challenges would be that some jokes don't work or the plot is not convincing enough. Nothing too big or dramatic.
GQ: When you just began comedy, what was it like to perform in front of a room full of people? BKR: When I began comedy, I was not performing for a room full of people. There would be hardly 3-5 people in the audience. It was fun and nerve-wracking at the same time. Over a period of time, the fear disappeared.
GQ: When did you seriously start considering comedy as your full-time career? What kind of jobs were you doing before becoming a comedian? BKR: When Kanan Gill and I did Pretentious Movie Reviews and it went viral, that's when I began doing comedy full-time. But before that, I had a few jobs in sales and graphic designing.
GQ: In your opinion, why do you think engineers switch to be in a more creative field? BKR: The real question is why are so many creative kids are made to do engineering despite their will? Also, engineering is one of the most creative fields in the world. The amount of innovation and scope is vast. In that sense, all engineers do something creative.
GQ: Who do you generally brainstorm with the most? BKR: Abhishek, the director of Laakhon Mein Ek. We have similar ideas and there is a lot I get to learn from him.
GQ: Initially, were there days where you felt like comedy was not going to pick up for you? BKR: I was enjoying doing comedy so much that it never felt like a struggle for me. There was always something new to do, so I was always excited. I really don't have any big struggle story.
GQ: Let's rewind a bit, you studied in an Odia-medium school, when and how did you learn English? What was the most challenging part of it? BKR: Our school had English as a subject but I started speaking it in 11th standard. The most challenging part was to get the accent right.
GQ: Do you have a specific strategy to maintain or increase your social media influence? BKR: I just post whenever I find something funny and hopefully people enjoy it. That's my only strategy. I am too dumb to strategize beyond that.
GQ: How is the onstage Biswa different from the real one? BKR: Real one keeps sleeping but the onstage one keeps standing. (Laughs) There's no other difference really.
GQ: Who is your favourite comedian? BKR: I like Brian Regan the most amongst comedians.
GQ: What series do you really like currently? BKR: My favourite web series is Mirzapur - I enjoyed watching it!
GQ: What's the next big thing on your plate? BKR: One tandoori chicken (Laughs).
I mean, were you really expecting serious answers from a comedian?
