Further education teacher training

Learn how to train to teach in colleges, sixth forms and training centres

Teaching in further education and training means working with older students, usually aged 16 and over. With further education teacher training, you'd be qualified to teach in sixth forms, colleges and training centres.

If that sounds like your idea of a rewarding career, we offer two routes into further education teaching – depending on your current qualifications and whether or not you're currently working as a teacher or in further education. We even provide distance learning versions of our further education teacher training, enabling you to study online in your own time.

You'll be in expert hands - both of our further education teacher training degrees were rated 'Excellent' by Ofsted after its latest inspection.

When you graduate with your further education PGCE or CertEd, you'll have a recognised teaching qualification as a teacher in further education and training. You'll also have expert knowledge gained by working closely with course teachers and work-based subject mentors.

One or two-year Further Education and Training PGCE

PGCE stands for Postgraduate Certificate in Education. If you already hold a UK undergraduate degree or equivalent, you can apply for our PGCE in Further Education and Training (rated as 'Good' by Ofsted in 2024), studying for one year full-time or for two years part-time.

The way you'll study our Further Education and Training PGCE depends on whether or not you're already working or teaching in a college, sixth form, training centre or other further education institution.

If you're new to teaching and the sector, you can study full-time over one year on our university campus or online via distance learning. Either way, you'll still do your further education teaching placements in person, with full support from a subject mentor.

Or, if you're already working or teaching in further education, you can choose to study on a part-time basis over two years either online via distance learning or at one of our partner colleges (Havant and South Downs College, Chichester College, Isle of Wight College or South Hampshire College Group - Eastleigh College).

You'll teach at least 100 hours and do 75 hours of non-teaching per year in your current role, and be supported by a subject mentor.

One or two-year Further Education and Training CertEd

If you don't yet have an undergraduate degree, this Certificate in Further Education and Training (CertEd) is for you. You'll just need a level 3 qualification and several years' professional experience in a relevant subject area.

Our further education CertEd works in the same way as our PGCE - the way you'll study comes down to whether or not you're already working or teaching in further education.

If you already have a role at a college, sixth form or training centre, you'll study on over two years part-time either online via distance learning or at one of our partner colleges (Havant and South Downs College, Chichester College, Isle of Wight College or South Hampshire College Group - Eastleigh College).

If not, you'll study for one year full-time on campus or online via distance learning. If you study online, you'll still attend your further education teaching placements in person.

Fe Charter

Our Members work with leading employers adding competitive value to their businesses through technical and professional training

The Chartered Institution for Further Education was established to highlight the excellence of further education and skills training providers. Now we have become so much more.

As well as being a membership body for further education organisations (Colleges, ITPs HEIs delivering in FE) in the UK with exceptional standards, we are working alongside industry to influence and shape the national skills system in order to ensure that professional education providers are recognised as the key drivers of economic development and growth within their local communities.  This work enables us to increasingly use our unified voice to influence at the highest levels of government and to collaborate and share best practice.

Further Education practitioners are dual professionals boasting both teaching and industry qualifications and practice.  Through effective industry partnerships these individuals regularly update their technical skills and knowledge keeping their practice, and subsequently their delivery, current.  Our institution recognises the unique context of Further Education through licensure of continued professional development.

Being recognised by the Body that has championed the autonomy and strength of leading FE Colleges and Training Providers is humbling. I particularly valued the citation that said my award was “in recognition of extremely distinguished services in the cause of further education in this country” ’.

The opportunities presented by the FE & Skills White Paper need to be grasped. The direct expertise of our member Colleges and Training Providers will be paramount in advocating for the autonomy and professionalism of our sector which is the raison d’etre of the Institution. But Fellows can bring to bear experience and lessons learned – sometimes painfully – from past legislative disappointments.

I look forward to playing my part in that noble cause!

Dr Ann Limb

Dr Ann Limb

Dr Ann Limb CBE DL FCFE is a passionate advocate for adult and further education and one of the sector’s long-standing and steadfast campaigners. Following graduation and a period of training and research in education, Ann’s career in FE began in 1976 as a part-time lecturer in modern languages & ESOL at what is now The Manchester College. A proud Mancunian by birth, she spent a decade working in colleges in the north and Derbyshire, moving through every teaching and management grade, before becoming Principal Milton Keynes College in 1986, when there were but a handful of women FE College Principals.

Under Ann’s leadership, Milton Keynes College grew tenfold, student achievement rates improved significantly, and the college was transformed from one judged to be ‘in special measures’ to ‘a good college with significant outstanding features including strategy, governance and leadership’. Highlighted by the Conservative government in 1992 as an exemplar for incorporation, the college was also at the forefront of much pioneering curriculum design and innovative employment practice – leading the way in student centered learning and staff welfare provision. At a national level, as well as co-chairing the adult education initiative that became the ‘Campaign for Learning’, in 1991, Ann was founding Chair of the Network for Women Managers in FE – now the Women’s Leadership Network.

During Ann’s second principalship at Cambridge Regional College between 1996-2001, Helena Kennedy’s seminal report on access to higher education for disadvantaged FE students, ‘Learning Works’ was published. The Labour government’s failure to address this issue impelled Ann to found – and personally finance – the independent educational charity, Helena Kennedy Foundation, which over the last 20 years has supported almost 2000 FE students to obtain a university degree. Ann’s move, at the start of the millennium, into the senior levels of the civil service, overseeing the establishment of the UK government’s flagship e-learning programmes, learndirect, UK online and gov.uk, did not take her far from the orbit of Further Education. She has served on the boards of the Centre for Excellence in Leadership and the Learning & Skills Improvement Service – both forerunners to today’s Education and Training Foundation and was elected to the Council of the City & Guilds of London Institute where she was made a Fellow in 2002, has served as a Trustee, founding Chair of The City & Guilds Foundation, and in autumn 2021 will become the Guilds first woman Chair.

In 2011 Ann was awarded an OBE for her work in education and in 2015 received a CBE for public service. In 2019 she was honoured with the award of Fellowship of the Chartered Institution of Further Education – and sector body she believes will have an increasingly significant role to play in the leadership of skills and technical training throughout the 21st century.

David Sherlock CBE, FCGI, FCIFE

David Sherlock CBE, FCGI, FCIFE

David trained originally as an industrial designer and then gained a research degree at Nottingham University. He experienced the creative turmoil of the formation of the polytechnics while teaching and practising in Nottingham and went on to manage a yet more dynamic situation as a reforming deputy director of Dublin’s National College of Art and Design from 1975-1980. Returning to the UK he was principal at Winchester School of Art for eight years as well as chairman of an innovative consortium of art and design learning provision in Hampshire. He went on to merge London’s Central School of Art and Design with Saint Martin’s School of Art as the first head of the world-leading Central Saint Martin’s.

David describes the experience of bringing together two very different college cultures as “traumatic”, notwithstanding the fact that both were early members of what became the University of the Arts, London. In 1991 he moved on to the Royal College of Art under the exciting, if occasionally eccentric, leadership of Sir Jocelyn Stevens, learning more about the ruthless pursuit of excellence in two years than in the previous 20. David went on to be senior inspector for the (then) 70 further education colleges in south-east England as one of the first appointments of the new Further Education Funding Council. After the first inspection cycle in 1997 he set up the new Training Standards Council as chief inspector and CEO, with responsibility for raising the quality of work-based training funded by TECs and welfare-to-work programmes. The success of the TSC led to addition of work from FEFC and Ofsted in the formation of the Adult Learning Inspectorate which David founded and led until it, too, succumbed to government reorganisation in 2007. The ALI pioneered many new approaches to quality improvement through the creative use of inspection, in the UK and internationally.

From leaving government service until recently David was a partner in Beyond Standards Ltd. During that time he established and chaired the National Skills Academy for Social Care and was expert advisor to Lord Lingfield’s inquiry into raising teaching standards and qualifications in FE. He continued to work as an honorary advisor in the formation and achievement of chartered status for the Chartered Institute for Further Education. David sees the Institute as a means to raise the status of FE colleges as key generators of both wealth and community cohesion. Living in Hampshire, David continues his connection with the sector both through the Institute and as chair of the Quality and Standards Committee of City and Guilds.

Start of a new era for Further Education in the region as three colleges merge to become South Hampshire College Group

further education hampshire

The merger of three of the region’s Further Education colleges into the South Hampshire College Group has heralded an auspicious new era for Further Education (FE).

Students from across South Hampshire will benefit from an enhanced range and improved quality of courses, with more expertise on offer and improved opportunities, across the campuses at the former City College Southampton, Eastleigh and Fareham college sites.

South Hampshire College Group’s (SHCG) first term starts in September, with students enrolling on a wide range of courses aimed at increasing the supply of professional and technical skills to the local economy.

The merger took place on Tuesday 1st August after positive feedback from students, parents, staff and local employers in a public consultation and a Department for Education (DfE) recommendation for the go-ahead in May 2023.

The newly-appointed CEO of the South Hampshire College Group, Andrew Kaye said: “This merger has created a single, financially strong, responsive and ambitious Further Education organisation to serve the education and training needs of South Hampshire.

“It’s an exciting new start and will bring many benefits to our students and staff, businesses and local communities.

“We will pool all our resources and expertise to enhance the range and quality of courses in this region.

“We also look forward to delivering enhanced pathways into higher levels of study and work; increasing the supply of skills; meeting employers’ needs and supporting our region’s economy to grow.

“Our ambition is to create a new and vibrant college, better able to meet the economic and social mobility challenges that the region faces.”

Chair of the new Board of Governors at SHCG, Sandra Prail, said: “We are tremendously excited to be at the helm of the new SHCG, and our Board members look forward to contributing their expertise and skills from many industry sectors into the new venture.

“I’m positive the students attending courses at our new college will flourish, grow in confidence and ultimately make a real tangible contribution to the local workforce and economy with their skill sets.”

Geraint Davies, former Chair of Governors at City College Southampton said; “The merger of these three FE colleges into the South Hampshire College Group will create a college for the future and we are proud to have a place in it.

“SHCG will provide centres of excellence, with a concentration of talent on each of the campuses. SHCG will produce skilled people to join South Hampshire’s workforce and contribute to the success of the economic landscape. We are looking forward to the future.”

Kevin Briscoe, former chair of Governors at Fareham College said: “I am delighted that this three-college merger has been achieved. The new SHCG will pay huge dividends to students and staff, while also benefiting our local businesses and communities.

“Everybody involved in this merger is confident that we have the resources and determination to establish an exceptional Further Education college fit to meet the needs of the future.”

Natalie Wigman, former chair of Eastleigh College Board of Governors, said: “By uniting our resources, we can enhance the range of provision and the quality of courses, allowing our students to thrive in this new environment.

“We can also increase the supply of skills, meeting employers’ needs more effectively and supporting our region’s economy.”
