✍️ What Is a Persuasive Essay?

A persuasive essay is a text that combines logical arguments with emotional appeal to make readers agree with a specific point of view. Usually, it starts with a query, which the author then uses to make a statement for or against the topic in question. All the arguments should be supported by evidence from different sources or personal experience.

📚 3 Elements of a Persuasive Essay

There are 3 key elements required for any persuasive essay: ethos, pathos, and logos . These concepts created by the famous philosopher Aristotle work together to create a line of arguments that seeks to persuade others of your point of view.

The picture enumerates the 3 elements of a persuasive essay.

  • Ethos is a component of the argument a speaker uses to establish their authority and prove their point. Readers are more likely to believe someone they know to be knowledgeable, experienced, and respected.
  • Pathos can be translated as "passion." The purpose of this element is to stir up powerful emotions in the reader. You may use strong language, share personal experiences, and employ vivid imagery to evoke empathy, fury, or other emotions.
  • Logos is based on facts, evidence, and proof. Essays based on a logos-driven approach refrain from mentioning anyone's reputation, feelings, or opinions.

🎊 Persuasive Essay Structure

If you want to write an excellent persuasive essay, knowing its structure is vital. No matter how clever its concept is, a paper without a compelling introduction, coherent body paragraphs, and clear conclusion is not going to make it. Let's review each part of a persuasive essay separately.

Introduction

A well-written introduction consists of 3 integral components:

A main body includes 2, 3, or more paragraphs. Each contains an argument supported by evidence, examples, and other information. You should pay attention to how your body paragraphs are organized because each one needs to represent a specific idea. Also, each paragraph should start with a topic sentence that briefly describes what argument will be presented there.

A conclusion summarizes all the arguments. It aims to finalize the essay's main idea that was reviewed throughout the main body. It should also give the reader closure after reading your text.

🎓 How to Write a Persuasive Essay

In this next segment, you'll find a small handy guide that will teach you how to write an excellent persuasive essay. Let's proceed to the first step!

The picture says that while expressing your position, you should also pay attention to the opposing viewpoint.

1. Choose Your Topic

Picking a topic is the first critical step in creating a persuasive essay. Keep in mind that if you choose something that you find captivating, it will be easier to complete your assignment. You will enjoy delving into a topic that resonates with you emotionally or personally. Besides, you won't get bored researching something that interests you.

2. Research Both Sides

It's crucial to research your position on the topic thoroughly. But reviewing the opposing side will make your arguments even more persuasive. That's why we recommend you be aware of the opposite viewpoint. To do it, you can follow these guidelines:

  • As you research the topic, pay extra attention to those sources that view your topic from a different angle .
  • Analyze other students' essays and compare their points of view to yours.
  • Imagine yourself as a critic and try to find the weak spots of your arguments.
  • Use our generator to get fresh arguments that you haven't thought of.

3. Make an Outline

Clearly organize your ideas using tables, numbers, or short prompts. Outlining your paper will give you a clearer understanding of your thesis and objectives. It will also prevent you from repeating yourself and forgetting to mention key arguments.

4. Find Persuasive Evidence

Your essay's persuasiveness will depend on how much solid proof you provide. Here's how you can enhance it:

  • Try to pick only the most convincing evidence to back up your opinion.
  • Use striking statistics and facts, but make sure not to exaggerate your position.
  • Also, we recommend showing respect to the opposing side and presenting their proof as well.
  • To connect with your reader, you can use anecdotes and tell stories from personal experience.

If you want to understand better which arguments to make and which evidence to include, try to analyze your audience . To do it, ask yourself:

  • How old is your audience?
  • What is their expertise level?
  • Will the audience easily relate to your point of view?

5. Write a Draft

It's time to start writing the first draft of your essay. Now all you have to do is follow your outline and transform all your ideas into arguments. Then, combine all the parts together into a coherent text.

Additionally, you can use our free persuasive essay generator to create a flawless draft that you can edit and rewrite as you see fit.

6. Edit and Proofread

After the draft is complete, you may begin proofreading and correcting it until it becomes a finished essay. To do it, follow this checklist:

  • Remove any redundant or irrelevant information.
  • Look for areas in your paper where something is missing or the argumentation is too weak.
  • Ask your friends or relatives to read your essay and recommend corrections.
  • Use helper apps like Grammarly to find and correct all of the mistakes.
  • Ensure your essay is logically structured and has all the paragraphs from an outline.

And that's how you write an essay! Feel free to use our free persuasive essay maker to increase the quality of your texts even further.

We also recommend using our reworder and title page generator .

How to Write a Thesis Statement | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on January 11, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on August 15, 2023 by Eoghan Ryan.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . It usually comes near the end of your introduction .

Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing. But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.

You can write your thesis statement by following four simple steps:

  • Start with a question
  • Write your initial answer
  • Develop your answer
  • Refine your thesis statement

A thesis statement summarizes the central points of your essay. It is a signpost telling the reader what the essay will argue and why.

The best thesis statements are:

  • Concise: A good thesis statement is short and sweet—don’t use more words than necessary. State your point clearly and directly in one or two sentences.
  • Contentious: Your thesis shouldn’t be a simple statement of fact that everyone already knows. A good thesis statement is a claim that requires further evidence or analysis to back it up.
  • Coherent: Everything mentioned in your thesis statement must be supported and explained in the rest of your paper.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

The thesis statement generally appears at the end of your essay introduction or research paper introduction .

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.

You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.

You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?

For example, you might ask:

After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be simple, and it should guide the research process and writing process .

Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.

In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.

The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education because it facilitates easier access to information.

In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.

The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.

A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:

  • Why you hold this position
  • What they’ll learn from your essay
  • The key points of your argument or narrative

The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.

These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.

Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:

  • In an argumentative essay , your thesis statement should take a strong position. Your aim in the essay is to convince your reader of this thesis based on evidence and logical reasoning.
  • In an expository essay , you’ll aim to explain the facts of a topic or process. Your thesis statement doesn’t have to include a strong opinion in this case, but it should clearly state the central point you want to make, and mention the key elements you’ll explain.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

Follow these four steps to come up with a thesis statement :

  • Ask a question about your topic .
  • Write your initial answer.
  • Develop your answer by including reasons.
  • Refine your answer, adding more detail and nuance.

The thesis statement should be placed at the end of your essay introduction .

How to Write a Strong Thesis Statement

A thesis can be found in many places—a debate speech, a lawyer’s closing argument, even an advertisement. But the most common place for a thesis statement (and probably why you’re reading this article) is in an essay.

Whether you’re writing an argumentative paper, an informative essay, or a compare/contrast statement, you need a thesis. Without a thesis, your argument falls flat and your information is unfocused. Since a thesis is so important, it’s probably a good idea to look at some tips on how to put together a strong one.

Guide Overview

What is a “thesis statement” anyway.

  • 2 categories of thesis statements: informative and persuasive
  • 2 styles of thesis statements
  • Formula for a strong argumentative thesis
  • The qualities of a solid thesis statement (video)

You may have heard of something called a “thesis.” It’s what seniors commonly refer to as their final paper before graduation. That’s not what we’re talking about here. That type of thesis is a long, well-written paper that takes years to piece together.

Instead, we’re talking about a single sentence that ties together the main idea of any argument . In the context of student essays, it’s a statement that summarizes your topic and declares your position on it. This sentence can tell a reader whether your essay is something they want to read.

2 Categories of Thesis Statements: Informative and Persuasive

Just as there are different types of essays, there are different types of thesis statements. The thesis should match the essay.

For example, with an informative essay, you should compose an informative thesis (rather than argumentative). You want to declare your intentions in this essay and guide the reader to the conclusion that you reach.

To make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you must procure the ingredients, find a knife, and spread the condiments.

This thesis showed the reader the topic (a type of sandwich) and the direction the essay will take (describing how the sandwich is made).

Most other types of essays, whether compare/contrast, argumentative, or narrative, have thesis statements that take a position and argue it. In other words, unless your purpose is simply to inform, your thesis is considered persuasive. A persuasive thesis usually contains an opinion and the reason why your opinion is true.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the best type of sandwich because they are versatile, easy to make, and taste good.

In this persuasive thesis statement, you see that I state my opinion (the best type of sandwich), which means I have chosen a stance. Next, I explain that my opinion is correct with several key reasons. This persuasive type of thesis can be used in any essay that contains the writer’s opinion, including, as I mentioned above, compare/contrast essays, narrative essays, and so on.

2 Styles of Thesis Statements

Just as there are two different types of thesis statements (informative and persuasive), there are two basic styles you can use.

The first style uses a list of two or more points . This style of thesis is perfect for a brief essay that contains only two or three body paragraphs. This basic five-paragraph essay is typical of middle and high school assignments.

C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series is one of the richest works of the 20th century because it offers an escape from reality, teaches readers to have faith even when they don’t understand, and contains a host of vibrant characters.

In the above persuasive thesis, you can see my opinion about Narnia followed by three clear reasons. This thesis is perfect for setting up a tidy five-paragraph essay.

In college, five paragraph essays become few and far between as essay length gets longer. Can you imagine having only five paragraphs in a six-page paper? For a longer essay, you need a thesis statement that is more versatile. Instead of listing two or three distinct points, a thesis can list one overarching point that all body paragraphs tie into.

Good vs. evil is the main theme of Lewis’s Narnia series, as is made clear through the struggles the main characters face in each book.

In this thesis, I have made a claim about the theme in Narnia followed by my reasoning. The broader scope of this thesis allows me to write about each of the series’ seven novels. I am no longer limited in how many body paragraphs I can logically use.

Formula for a Strong Argumentative Thesis

One thing I find that is helpful for students is having a clear template. While students rarely end up with a thesis that follows this exact wording, the following template creates a good starting point:

___________ is true because of ___________, ___________, and ___________.

Conversely, the formula for a thesis with only one point might follow this template:

___________________ is true because of _____________________.

Students usually end up using different terminology than simply “because,” but having a template is always helpful to get the creative juices flowing.

The Qualities of a Solid Thesis Statement

When composing a thesis, you must consider not only the format, but other qualities like length, position in the essay, and how strong the argument is.

Length: A thesis statement can be short or long, depending on how many points it mentions. Typically, however, it is only one concise sentence. It does contain at least two clauses, usually an independent clause (the opinion) and a dependent clause (the reasons). You probably should aim for a single sentence that is at least two lines, or about 30 to 40 words long.

Position: A thesis statement always belongs at the beginning of an essay. This is because it is a sentence that tells the reader what the writer is going to discuss. Teachers will have different preferences for the precise location of the thesis, but a good rule of thumb is in the introduction paragraph, within the last two or three sentences.

Strength: Finally, for a persuasive thesis to be strong, it needs to be arguable. This means that the statement is not obvious, and it is not something that everyone agrees is true.

Example of weak thesis:

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are easy to make because it just takes three ingredients.

Most people would agree that PB&J is one of the easiest sandwiches in the American lunch repertoire.

Example of a stronger thesis:

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are fun to eat because they always slide around.

This is more arguable because there are plenty of folks who might think a PB&J is messy or slimy rather than fun.

Composing a thesis statement does take a bit more thought than many other parts of an essay. However, because a thesis statement can contain an entire argument in just a few words, it is worth taking the extra time to compose this sentence. It can direct your research and your argument so that your essay is tight, focused, and makes readers think.

A thesis statement is the core of your whole paper. Therefore, to create the ultimate thesis statement, you are asked to provide some information regarding your work. It would be lame if it just spilled out a random statement, right?

First of all, the thesis generator requests the topic of your paper . The topic is the main idea of your work, but more generalized. Try not to include too many details, or you might confuse the generator. It should be comprehensive but brief at the same time.

Then, we ask you to type in your key findings , meaning the conclusion. If you don't have it ready yet, just think about what idea you would like to convey to your readers.

Next, you should present the main argument that supports your conclusion. It is usually something that can make your readers believe in the accuracy of the conclusion. Keep in mind that it always has to be related to the topic! Also, there is a field for an additional argument to fill in.

And last but not least, your counterargument . It is something that works against your findings. Put merely, counterargument presents a different point of view, and your readers would know that your paper is unbiased.

To generate your thesis statement

If by now you already have an outline, it shouldn't be hard. If you don't have one yet, you might want to invest some time into writing it. A correctly organized outline makes the writing process much more comfortable! You can check out our guide .

All of the elements mentioned above are crucial for creating a good thesis statement. To find out some more details on thesis statements, keep reading!

What Is a Thesis Statement in Writing?

Just a central idea is not all that a thesis statement is. It can even be more than one sentence, but it always has to represent the essence of your work. The thesis statement can be the answer to the question you asked when you started writing.

What Is a Thesis in an Essay?

A type of essay would also influence your thesis. There are six or more different types of thesis statements you can write in the essay. But, it still doesn't change the fact that it should be a clear summary of your essay's main ideas.

What is a Thesis in a Speech?

The thesis in a speech is pretty much the same as in writing. It represents the core ideas and findings of your work. But in the speech, a vital and central role of the thesis is to involve your audience and make them pay attention to you.

What is a Thesis Statement in a Research Paper?

The thesis statement in a research paper combines both roles mentioned above. Remember that it needs to be as persuasive as it should be catchy. The reason is simple: the thesis statement of your research paper is the first thing your mentor and evaluation committee reads.

💪 Generating a Thesis Statement Easily

So far, you might be wondering how to make an excellent thesis statement. That is why we prepared a short guide for you. Learning from other people's mistakes is much more pleasant than receiving an awful review from your mentor, isn't it?

Here is a list of points from experts about the definition of the good thesis statements:

  • First of all, it informs the readers about your point of view on the chosen topic. Moreover, it underlines the importance of the issue you discuss.
  • It sets some expectations for the readers. Since the thesis statement is the first thing they read, it gives them a clue about what to expect.
  • The thesis statement is not a declaration of your paper's topic. Is should contain the answer you ask in the topic.

A good thesis statement

  • It is often one or two sentences that you present at the beginning of your work. The rest of the paper aims to persuade the reader. However, the position might be different depending on the type of writing (or speech) you are working on.

👀 Tips to Generate a Strong Thesis

As you may have already understood, it is not enough to just rephrase the conclusion to get a strong thesis statement. We have put all the tips for writing a persuasive and informative thesis.

Writing a thesis statement is one of the first things you do when starting to work on the paper or essay. Hence, it is fair to say that it can become a roadmap for your future writing process. It is crucial always to follow your initial point of view. While working on different parts of your writing, go back to the thesis statement to make sure you are still on track. In this case, if your thesis is weak, you can't possibly follow it in this process.

Moreover, a strong thesis statement is a sentence that should contain some evidence supporting your conclusion. It is kind of a summary of all your work. Keep in mind that only strong points can make your thesis stand out.

It brings us to the last aspect of the perfect thesis statement. You need to put all your creativity into this one sentence to create something that can interest your readers. Ideally, it works as a hook and motivates them to keep reading your paper.

Let's look through the main points now. You can consider this list as a thesis statement checker. In case you have any doubts, just go back here and double-check!

You don't want your statement to be vague and full of unnecessary details. However, you should include supportive arguments. Conjunctions might help but don't overuse them. Especially try avoiding coordinating conjunctions.

There should only be the most important idea, which makes sense because there can't be more than one main idea.

You should always use academic writing style and avoid generalizing and vague words like "good" and "bad." It should also exclude any possible misinterpretations.

Can your readers understand what point of view you support? If no, you should adjust your thesis statement so that your opinion on the topic would be included.

It is not a smart idea to use standard and general formulas to create an original thesis. It would be quite evident if you do. This one of the reasons you should use our generator that helps writing a thesis statement in only five minutes, and it is unique!

If you are writing an essay, think about where to put it. The best options would be in the first and the second paragraph.

You should aim to pursue one of these vital functions. Otherwise, your readers can doubt if your entire writing is worthy.

🎓 Thesis Statement Examples

Still not sure how a thesis statement should look like? No worries, we put together two amazing and easy examples for you. We are going through weak, stronger, and great statements to point out the mistakes you should avoid.

The first thesis statement example is related to the risks of obesity .

People should exercise more . It doesn't specify what people and how much more they should exercise. Moreover, this statement doesn't seem to be related to the topic of the risks of obesity. The arguments are also left out here.

Obese people have to exercise regularly for health benefits . It is already better since it is less vague, but some aspects still look a bit too general. For instance, "regularly" is different for all people, and the phrase "health benefits" needs clarification as well.

Exercising three and more times per week reduces the chances of complications, such as heart disease and diabetes, for patients with all classes of obesity . This thesis statement includes both argument and specifications, which is excellent! Now, checking the main objectives of your research is much more comfortable with it. Moreover, it is clear enough for your readers.

Another example is about the danger of smoking .

Smoking is bad for you . You can't disagree that this thesis statement is not even good enough for an article title. It is way too vague and doesn't catch the attention at all. The only good thing about it is that it is kind of related to the topic.

Smoking can have adverse effects on the process of conception . Here, one argument is presented: the adverse effects of smoking on fertility. However, there is no specification of what effects. The gender of the potential smokers is not mentioned either, which is vital for describing the reproductive system processes in the paper. Moreover, the single fact that a modal "can" is used undermines your whole paper. The readers might think that you haven't done enough research.

Smoking and passive smoking during the reproductive years lower the chances for natural conception by damaging women's eggs and reducing the quality of sperm for men . You can see that all the aspects of a good thesis statement are present here. Even the danger of passive smoking is included, as well. Moreover, the reason why smoking is dangerous for fertility is also stated.

We hope this article helped you out. And remember, if you're having a problem, the statement generator is here to ease your struggles. After using it, you can also go through this article again since it is an excellent thesis checker!

Types of Thesis Statements

Persuasive thesis statement.

A persuasive thesis statement is used when you are asked to create an essay that takes a position on a debatable subject. Your thesis must be about something that people would likely have differing opinions on and the body of your paper provides information intended to help persuade the reader regarding your position.

Example: School Uniforms are beneficial to students because differences in income are less visible, morning routines are easier, and school spirit is promoted.

Research Thesis Statement

Research papers begin with a question and you will be expected to gather information and evidence from appropriate, valid sources to inform your final thesis statement. In this case, your thesis statement answers your research question and is formed as a result of the research you have completed. As part of this type of paper, you are often expected to define your topic and evaluate some aspect of the topic. Your sources will need to be included in your paper to support your thesis.

Example: While some studies have found that freedom of choice allows students to express individuality, schools that have a school uniform policy report less incidents of theft of personal belongings and less incidents of violent behavior indicating that school uniforms may reduce bullying incidents.

Compare and Contrast

A compare and contrast essay is intended to present the similarities or differences between two people or ideas or things, etc. This type of thesis statement introduces the reader to the result of the comparison and the significance of the contrast.

Example: Although many public and private schools are  comparable in that safety of students is a high priority and anti-bullying programs are on the rise, they differ in that private schools typically have a uniform policy, and there are more reported incidents of bullying in public schools.

✅ 6 Benefits of This Persuasive Speech Generator

How can this instant generator benefit your speech-writing efforts?

Our tool has many benefits, but we focus on the 6 most important ones:

As the name suggests, a persuasive speech influences listeners’ behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and values.

In this speech, a speaker seeks a favorable response that aligns with their convictions or position on a matter.

An orator uses arguments to convince their audience to see a particular issue from their preferred perspective. Convincing arguments incorporate different elements to urge listeners to favor a speaker’s stand.

They follow a three-prong strategy incorporating:

A claim is a statement requiring support through evidence. Your speech should also include a thesis statement, your speech’s overarching idea from which other smaller ideas spring.

Informative vs. Persuasive Speech

An informative speech differs from a persuasive one in many ways.

So, how do you write a great persuasive speech that makes listeners adopt your preferred position on a matter?

Below are steps to drafting a great convincing speech.

Know Your Audience

Start by familiarizing yourself with your listeners before moving by knowing their needs, tastes, and ability to understand your desired topic.

This way, you will be better positioned to customize your speech to suit their needs and not parade your vast knowledge.

Familiarize Yourself with Your Topic

Get to know your topic to ensure it suits your audience’s needs. If you aren’t familiar with the topic, research it thoroughly to present your readers with facts.

This way, you will be better positioned to present your listeners with sufficient facts to persuade them.

Determine Your Speech’s Goal

A speech is not only about organizing facts in a logical manner; it is usually meant to persuade the audience and deliver a specific message across .

You, as a speaker, should focus on that message and find appropriate means to get it across.

Select the Best Persuasive Approach

Determine the best approach to persuade your listeners. You may lean on either ethos, logos, or pathos to achieve your desired goal. You can also use all of these approaches.

The final selection will depend on your audience.

Outline Your Key Ideas

You need to outline your best points before presenting them to your audience.

This way, you are better placed to know which argument to present first and last.

Start on a Strong Footing

You must begin your speech with a strong, attractive hook to capture your audience’s attention.

Your opening needs a catchy title that whets your audience’s appetite to listen to your speech.

Give Convincing Evidence

Your speech’s main body should include the points you want to use to convince listeners to side with your position.

Give your audience convincing examples and reasons to buy into your perspective.

Address Counter-arguments

Don’t forget to address opposing arguments because others have a right to hold contrary views and not accept your point right away.

While this may not be necessary, you can bolster your case by anticipating and discussing opposing views.

Finish with a Call to Action

Since you defined your speech’s goal, don’t forget to make a relevant call to action .

Remember, this part is like your landing pad.

Below are carefully selected persuasive speech topics to inspire you.
