Fascinating, intriguing and mysterious; the Mona Lisa is still discussed animatedly today, offering a vital insight into the Renaissance period. Thousands of eager eyes peruse the painting daily, absorbing da Vinci’s well-guarded masterpiece. To celebrate this iconic painting, Artsper’s taking you back in time to find out more about the woman behind the smile.

The painting should have been completed in 1503, but the painter never let it out of his sight; never truly ‘finishing’ the painting until his death in 1519. When da Vinci left Italy to become King Francis I’s protégé, he took the Mona Lisa with him. Shortly before his death, da Vinci sold the painting to King Francis I for 4,000 gold coins, and it remained a part of the royal collections during the reign of Louis XIV. Before it joined the permanent collection of the Louvre , Napoleon Bonaparte requested the painting for Josephine’s personal apartments.

Like the majority of the museum’s pieces, the Mona Lisa had to be stored securely during the two World Wars. Louvre curator, René Huyghe, saved the painting from the Nazis by hiding it under his bed. Despite her tumultuous travels in previous years, André Malraux’s insisted the Mona Lisa leave Europe for the United States. There, she was received by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Now too fragile to travel, the Mona Lisa remains in the Louvre where she is visited by thousands everyday.

The Mona Lisa , like the rest of da Vinci’s paintings, was never signed or dated. When it comes to the identity of the mysterious Mona Lisa , it is Giorgio Vasari’s theory that is considered the most official. “Mona” derives from the Italian term “Monna” meaning “lady,” suggesting Lady Lisa to have been Lisa Gherdinini, the wife of Francesco Del Giocondo. It is widely believed that Giocondo, a cloth and silk merchant, commissioned the painting of his wife but never received it. However a widespread scepticism surrounds this theory. Many are doubtful of the story’s authenticity, and are still searching for the Mona Lisa ’s true identity. Italian historian, Roberto Zapperi, accused Giorgio Vasari of inventing this claim, and that the Mona Lisa is actually a portrait of Pacifica Brandani. Brandani was the mistress of Giuliano de’ Medici, son of Lorenzo de’ Medici.

The identity of the Mona Lisa remains an animated discussion amongst art historians, and has even become the root of some more far-fetched theories. Some of the most creative claims suggest the Mona Lisa is a prostitute, da Vinci’s mother or even a man ( Leonardo’s apprentice, Salai). Others are convinced the Mona Lisa is a portrait of the 15th century Duchess of Forli, Catherine Sforza. Attempts have even been made to reconstruct Lisa Gherardini’s face from her skull, to then superimpose onto da Vinci’s portrait. Even though these attempts were unsuccessful, Lisa Gherardini was still formally identified as the Mona Lisa .

Her profound gaze follows you around the room, and her expression is a source of fascination to many. After 500 years of watching her visitors, the Mona Lisa has maintained ironclad eye contact with all those who let themselves be absorbed by her mocking smile. Art historians have again proposed various theories for this fascination with the Mona Lisa . Medical hypotheses are the most common; where dental issues, facial paralysis and even thyroid problems are at the root of the Mona Lisa ’s captivating aesthetic. The particularity of the Mona Lisa ’s face could simply be due to fading colour over the centuries. One theory charmingly claimed the Mona Lisa’s facial expression is a result of entertainers who made the model laugh during the painting; allowing da Vinci to capture this unique and slightly stifled smile.

The Technique

A major study at the beginning of the 21st century provided a better understanding of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous sfumato technique. “Sfumato” means “soft” in Italian, which accurately describes the delicate, hazy and slightly blurred effect of da Vinci’s painting. Subjects are coated in a cloud of carefully blended colour and subtle gradations. The Mona Lisa is made up of approximately twenty light layers of paint, some of which are extremely thin. As a result of this meticulous work, the surface of the painting shows absolutely no trace of brush strokes. Despite its epic age, the Mona Lisa is rather well preserved. However, infrared analyses have discovered that certain pigments and in particular Mona Lisa’s eyebrows, have faded over the centuries.

One morning in 1911, visitors were shocked to discover that the Mona Lisa had disappeared from the Louvre. News of the painting’s disappearance spread like wildfire, and fingers were quick to point at Pablo Picasso and his friend, Guillaume Apollinaire. However, the Mona Lisa was actually stolen by Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian carpenter, who kept the painting on his kitchen table for two years before it was found. This had an astronomical impact on the public, all because Peruggia was under the false understanding that the Mona Lisa was one of the paintings stolen by the Napoleonic army. Throughout the history of art, her smile has inspired artists such as, Marcel Duchamp , Salvador Dali , Andy Warhol , Banksy and Okuda . Even today, a considerable number of contemporary artists still appropriate this mythical portrait in their works.

Leonardo da Vinci truly put his heart and soul into this iconic painting. Many claim the portrait is physically aging, as the left side of her face appears younger than the right. Perhaps this was intentional, and da Vinci’s mastery managed to convey a painting who would quite literally age with the hundreds of generations she observed.

Mona Lisa is one of the most prominent and recognizable paintings in the world and is considered the greatest masterpiece of its author, Leonardo da Vinci. Created in 1503, the painting has been discussed for centuries by artists, academics, medics, and the general public (Mehra & Campbell, 2018). A vast amount of the painting’s interpretations already exist, and some are still being proposed nowadays. However, this paper mostly aims to explore the central theme, subject, and message of the Mona Lisa .

Da Vinci’s masterpiece was written during the Renaissance, and thus, was strongly influenced by the ideas of that period. The philosophy of the Renaissance placed a human in the center of the world; that is why portraits were so popular with Italian masters of the 15 th and 16 th centuries. Leonardo was among the first artists to capture a person sitting in front of the fictional landscape. Even though Mona Lisa is reminiscent of Madonna, it is still clear that the painter tried to depict an ordinary person. For creating this painting, Leonardo used a technique called “sfumato.” This term refers to the technique of oil painting that allows achieving a soft transition from one color to another. The great combination of the woman and the landscape in Mona Lisa is due to this technique (Da Vinci, n.d.). Therefore, this work by Leonardo may be considered not as a classical portrait, and this is what makes it unique among other paintings of a similar genre.

Mona Lisa has an outstanding impact on various types of Western art, but there were some things that shaped Leonardo’s work as well. As it was already mentioned, the Renaissance period had a strong effect on Leonardo’s works. The painter portrayed a real woman who was not consistent with medieval Christian philosophy. Leonardo is also famous for creating paintings on religious themes, but Mona Lisa does not depict another Madonna. The painting shows a typical woman of Leonardo’s age which confirms his commitment to the humanistic vision of the world. Therefore, it is impossible to omit the influence of this woman on Leonardo’s painting. Most critics and researchers agree that Mona Lisa portrays an Italian woman Lisa Gherardini. She was the wife of a rich merchant who ordered her portrait from Leonardo. This happened soon after Lisa gave birth to a child (Kemp & Pallanti, 2017). This might partly explain why Leonardo depicted the woman smiling.

I have always appreciated Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, but after careful examination, I discovered a new meaning in it. Being aware of the story behind the painting helps to understand it better and makes it more interesting to observe. When you know which person is portrayed in the painting, it is possible to enter his or her life for some time and experience the feelings that he or she had. It is also essential to consider the social and philosophical contest in which the painting was written. It might be hard to realize the significance of the Mona Lisa for the history of art if you do not know that it was one of the first portraits that depicted a real person. Undoubtedly, one can enjoy a painting even if one is not aware of its background. However, once you have become familiar with the painting’s story, you may start to value the piece of art even more.

This paper did not attempt to discover or propose new interpretations of the Mona Lisa . I tried to focus on the main factors that influenced Leonardo’s masterpiece as well as study the most crucial features of the painting. Now that I have become aware of the fact that Leonardo was one of the first Renaissance masters to combine a regular person with the landscape, I can appreciate the painting not only from the artistic perspective but also from the historical.

This paper will provide a rhetoric analysis of the Mona Lisa painting, because it has rendered its audience into a redundant situation where the individual who admires this painting always ends up in his or her own interpretation or assumption of the different meanings of the image.

This is a painting that has received mixed responses from scholars, art lovers, and unfussy viewers of the painting. This has led the painting to being involved into a process that has attracted, what can be termed as a celebration from “pregnancy” to “morning.”

As the painting has been subject to wear and tear just like other paintings, it has endured over times and emerge as one of the most remarkable paintings, and which is characterized as a unique painting that has the most fascinating features.

Mona Lisa painting may sometimes be described as a definitive art; this is because it has nearly all qualities and properties of the art-painting (Barolsky 62). For this reason, the Mona Lisa art happens to be viewed as one of the well-regarded paintings in the world.

The proportions of the face and body are indeed perfect. The painting represents a feeling of completeness, as it incorporates all elements of art that is well engineered (64). The use of colors in the portrait of Mona Lisa brings out the art to full perfection revealing Da Vinci’s artistic skills.

The analysis of Mona Lisa revolves around a portrait of a woman who has a mysterious facial expression. Many art critiques believe that the smile of a woman is hiding some secrets. Her hands are seen to be folded across her bosom; her breast, face, and neck are well illuminated with the same light models.

The availability of light gives different shades in the foreground, middle, and background surfaces. Da Vinci used the sfumato technique in this painting; he created shadowy areas upon which the shapes blend over each other.

How it works

A painting which doesn’t have words but can explain everything just by a view of the true artist. One of the most beautiful works in history is a painting of Mona Lisa by Leonardo in the city Florence between 1503 and 1505. Mona Lisa was beautiful wife of Francesco del Gioconda, but Leonardo never gives the portrait to Francesco. Instead, he kept it with himself. They are the much more profound meaning of the painting some say it is the female version of the artist himself, and other were searching some hidden images in the art.

Till now Mona Lisa painting is admired by many people as it shows true simplify and uniqueness. The picture attracts people because it is a real and beautiful piece of art in which the expression of women’s face clearly explained impressively.

The most beautiful, clear representing of oil painting is Mona Lisa. The technique used by the artist in his painting is almost invisible and changing one color to another so smoothly in “A Great Work of Art” by Petronius Arbiter, he states “invests the picture with that perennial lifting power.” The evident throughout the painting, the soft coloring used on Mona Lisa’s around the eyes and mouth.

The portrait face expression and the color used shows the calmness which leads to the mystery. Also, he says, “The women’s eyebrows appear almost nonexistent, and she resonates of a fleshy. Which seems that the portrait is looking directly to the viewer. Her hands were slightly unreal, almost sounds like lifeless or it belonged to a different body. The smile and dark eye which can capture so many people together and the painting has an apparent ability to make people think that Mona Lisa painting was done with the feeling of being a woman by the artist.

Another technique of the painting which can be identified by analyzing that the portrait on the landscape. The landscape can be seen throughout the hair and clothing are emulated in the waves of the scene and the curves in the river and the hills behind Lisa. She is seating in the mid as it can be shown as pillars are appearing on either side of her and vast landscape out towards an icy mountain range. The painting of the Mona Lisa indicates that the world filled with beauty such as mountains, beautiful roads in the background. The picture is made up of three triangles. The left top corner shaded darker than the other hole which indicates the trouble or decision and on the other hand the top side corner is lighter which shows the clear or straight path. The artist had created a masterpiece by creating a balance in the painting with symmetry and beautiful color usage.

The subject’s expression, create an illusionism atmosphere amongst the audiences which provokes them to understand and do the study of this beautiful work. However, the artist creates a sense of distance between Mona Lisa and the audience or the armchair on which she rests. Except for the face, everything around her is dark which bring the attention directly to the front and make it the center of attraction. Moreover, the beauty of her expression which draws the focus of light on her but, it can immediately contrasted with the distance.

The question arises with such grace is just that is the portrait described as same the person or opposite. Whatever the painting shows may be is not real because it is showing as what the artist wants to show the beauty of the outside of the person, but we are not able to see the inner beauty by the painting. Only the landscape behind her created which can be seen by the detail of her mouth and famous smile.

Everyone for decades is working on the theories as the painting still exist and in good condition. All the artist is still trying to figure the sign of the smile in the portrait. The picture has been a mystery for the years and will remain for the rest of the life. The smile of Mona Lisa is seen differently by everyone and had a different meaning to every different viewer. Even the science has no answer for the special relations that personal pick for the smile on them. Margaret Livingstone, a professor at Harvard, claims that the painting is the most effective when viewed peripherally.

Napoleon loved her, but Marie Antoinette found her “too small, too dark” and had her removed to the obscurity of a poky back room at Versailles.

Today up to ten million visitors a year pay court to the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris, crowding into the gallery where she gazes out from behind 3in of bulletproof glass alongside works by Venetian masters of the 16th century.

T he internet has reacted strongly to an artificial intelligence-generated video of the famous subject of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa painting singing along to a rap that actor Anne Hathaway wrote and performed.

The polarizing clip, which has elicited reactions online ranging from humor to horror, is one of the tricks of Microsoft’s new AI technology called VASA-1. The technology is able to generate lifelike talking faces of virtual characters using a single image and speech audio clip. The AI can make cartoon characters, photographs, and paintings sing or talk, as evidenced in footage Microsoft released as part of research published on April 16.

In the most viral clip, the woman in the Mona Lisa painting sings, her mouth, eyes and face moving, to “Paparazzi,” a rap Hathaway wrote and performed on Conan O’Brien ’s talk show in 2011. In another Microsoft clip, an avatar sings, and in others generated from real photos, people speak on common-place topics.

The videos quickly gained traction online: One post on X, formerly Twitter, on April 18 featuring the singing Mona Lisa clip and others had garnered seven million views as of Sunday.

The online reactions were swift, strong and across the board. Some enjoyed the clips, with one commenter posting that the Mona Lisa video had them “rolling on (the) floor laughing.” Others were more wary or even disturbed. “This is wild, freaky, and creepy all at once,” one said . “Another day, another terrifying AI video,” another lamented . “Why does this need to exist? I can’t think of any positives,” one commenter criticized.

Microsoft’s researchers addressed the risks of the new technology and said they have no plans to release an online demo or product “until we are certain that the technology will be used responsibly and in accordance with proper regulations.” 

“It is not intended to create content that is used to mislead or deceive,” the researchers wrote. “However, like other related content generation techniques, it could still potentially be misused for impersonating humans. We are opposed to any behavior to create misleading or harmful contents of real persons, and are interested in applying our technique for advancing forgery detection.” 

“While acknowledging the possibility of misuse, it's imperative to recognize the substantial positive potential of our technique,” they said. “The benefits—such as enhancing educational equity, improving accessibility for individuals with communication challenges, offering companionship or therapeutic support to those in need, among many others—underscore the importance of our research and other related explorations. We are dedicated to developing AI responsibly, with the goal of advancing human well-being.”

The latest development in AI comes as governments around the world are scrambling to regulate the new technology and legislate against its criminal misuse.

One example is deepfake pornography, where the face of an individual is superimposed onto an explicit picture or video without their consent, an issue that even affected Taylor Swift earlier this year. In the U.S., while 10 states criminalize deepfakes, federal law does not, and multiple bills have been introduced in Congress to rectify this.

The Mona Lisa painting may be moved to an underground chamber in a bid by the Louvre museum to improve the “ world’s most disappointing ” viewing experience for its star attraction.

Leonardo da Vinci’s famed portrait of an enigmatically almost-smiling woman is the main attraction of the Louvre, helping it to be the most-visited museum in the world.

But a recent survey showed tourists did not enjoy the experience, with comments ranging from ”never been so disappointed” to “torture”.

The 1503 portrait is currently exhibited behind bullet-proof glass in the centre of the Salle des Etats, with the temperature and humidity inside its casing tightly controlled to ensure the painting does not degrade.

The protective covering was upgraded with anti-reflective technology in 2019 in order to improve visitors’ viewing experience.

‘At first glance the painting looks like a postage stamp’

Laurence des Cars, the Louvre’s director, has suggested moving the masterpiece to a dedicated room dug into the basement.

“We don’t welcome visitors very well in this room, so we feel we’re not doing our job properly,” she told staff and supervisors. “Moving the Mona Lisa to a separate room could put an end to public disappointment.”

Vincent Delieuvin, chief curator of 16th-century Italian painting at the Louvre agrees. “We’ve been thinking about it for a long time, but this time everyone is in agreement,” he told Le Figaro.

“It’s a large room, and the Mona Lisa is at the back, behind its security glass, so at first glance it looks like a postage stamp,” he said.

That flew in the face of the artist’s original intention, he added: “Leonardo da Vinci wanted to establish a face-to-face relationship between the painting and the person contemplating it”.

According to museum officials, the painting is the main draw for 80 per cent of its nine-million-a-year guests. On some days, 25,000 people queue to catch a fleeting glimpse of it.

But with viewers getting an average of 50 seconds to admire the piece, tourists recently dubbed it “the world’s most disappointing masterpiece”.

‘Is it worth paying a €22 entrance fee?’

Based on collated comments from visitors, the Mona Lisa was branded the most underwhelming work among 100 top masterpieces on display around the planet, receiving 37 per cent “negative mentions”, according to a poll for CouponBirds published in Le Parisien last month.

“At only 30 inches by 20, this painted panel of wood has a large hold over the public’s imagination – and five centuries later, noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo may be the oldest woman to have her own mailbox for love letters and flowers,” it wrote.

“But is it worth paying a €22 entrance fee – and jostling with a crowd of strangers – to catch a fleeting glimpse?” it asked.

Various attempts have been made to improve the painting’s viewing experience, most recently in 2019 when the Salle des Etats’ walls were repainted from eggshell yellow to midnight blue and the queuing system streamlined.

But more is required given that “the celebrity of the Mona Lisa, which began after it was stolen in 1911, is exponential, driven by mass tourism and social networks”, said Mr Delieuvin.

“In this day and age, you have to have seen something that everyone is talking about at least once in your life, and the Mona Lisa is clearly one of those ‘must sees’,” he said.

Worries about the possible cost

The new chamber would be part of a major overhaul of the museum dubbed Grand Louvre that would open a new entrance at the colonnade opposite the church of Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois.

The idea would grant up to six million visitors almost direct access to two new rooms under the Louvre’s Cour Carréé, one for temporary exhibitions and the other for the Mona Lisa.

“The mood in the museum is now ripe,” said Ms des Cars. “We have to embrace the painting’s status as a global icon, which is beyond our control.”

The freed-up Salle des États would give coherence back to the collection of Venetian works, notably Veronese’s The Marriage at Cana, which hangs next to the Mona Lisa and is often obscured by selfie poles, she argued.

However, there remains the not-so-small question of funding. According to Le Figaro, the budget for the complete overhaul is estimated at €500 million and comes at a time when President Emmanuel Macron’s government is desperately seeking to rein in state spending following worse-than-expected debt and deficit forecasts.

Finance minister Bruno Le Maire has already said he hopes to claw back €25 billion in savings for the 2025 budget and has urged the cultural sector to do its fair share.

In January, environmental activists hurled pumpkin soup at the Mona Lisa, calling for the right to “healthy and sustainable food” as they splattered the painting .

Rachida Dati, France’s newly appointed culture minister, denounced the stunt as an attack on French heritage that “belongs to future generations”.

Now Microsoft said the tech could work within educational applications or, as they put it, “improving accessibility for individuals with communication challenges,” or even virtual companions for humans. Now, that all sounds good, but it may be used for impersonating people and other nefarious uses. Imagine this AI technology used to disrupt creative industries from film to advertising and more.

Microsoft says it is not releasing the VASA-1 model to the public just yet. “We are opposed to any behavior that creates misleading or harmful contents about real persons,” Microsoft researchers said in a recent blog post. They added that they have “no plans to release” the product publicly “until we are certain that the technology will be used responsibly and in accordance with proper regulations.”
