  • Emphasizing quantifiable achievements, such as the "comprehensive overhaul of our accounting software" and the "strategic expansion into 10 new locations," helps to demonstrate the candidate's ability to deliver concrete results and manage significant projects.
  • Highlighting leadership and growth, as shown by the "eclipsed growth expectations by 30%," indicates the candidate's strength in guiding teams and expanding business operations, which is critical for a managerial role in an ambitious company.
  • Addressing specific issues the candidate has resolved, such as correcting a "false $30,000 loss," showcases problem-solving skills and attention to detail, which are vital for financial and operational integrity in a management position.
  • Expressing a willingness to contribute to the team and discuss alignment with the organization's goals suggests that the candidate is both a team player and strategically minded, important traits for someone aiming to take a leadership position in a new company.

The format of your general manager cover letter: structure, fonts, margins, and more

Your general manager cover letter should include a header (with your name, position, and date); a greeting and introductory paragraph; a body and closing paragraphs; and an optional signature.

Remember that you're writing your general manager cover letter for recruiters - as the Applicant Tracker System won't scan this content.

Here are a few more tips and tricks to keep in mind when formatting your general manager cover letter:

  • Use the same font in your general manager cover letter and resume . We recommend modern fonts, e.g. Lato and Rubik, to help you stand out, instead of the stereotypical Arial and Times New Roman.
  • Each paragraph should have single spacing, which is already set up for you in our cover letter templates .
  • Our cover letter builder follows industry standards for your general manager cover letter formatting - with a one-inch margin, surrounding your content.
  • Always export your general manager cover letter in PDF to ensure the image or text quality stays the same and your writing isn't moved about.

The top sections on a general manager cover letter

  • Header with Contact Information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email so the recruiter can easily reach out to you; this section is particularly important for a general manager position because it demonstrates professionalism and attention to detail.
  • Opening Greeting and Introduction: Address the hiring manager by name if possible and open with a powerful statement about your interest and fit for the general manager role, as this sets the tone and shows your enthusiasm for the position.
  • Body Highlighting Leadership Experience: In this section, focus on your previous leadership roles and how you've successfully managed teams and operations, which is crucial for a general manager position as it directly relates to the core responsibilities of the job.
  • Discussion of Industry-Specific Skills: Tailor this part to discuss your expertise in the specific industry of the company you're applying to, highlighting skills that showcase your ability to understand and drive the business forward, a key aspect of the general manager's role.
  • Closing with a Call to Action: Finish your cover letter by reiterating your interest in the position, thanking the recruiter for their time, and indicating your enthusiasm for a personal interview, which is a proactive way to encourage the hiring manager to take the next step.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proven leadership and team management skills: Recruiters look for candidates who can inspire, guide, and motivate their team to achieve business objectives.
  • Strategic planning and business acumen: A general manager must understand the market and industry trends to develop strategies that further the company's goals.
  • Strong financial management experience: The ability to create and manage budgets, control costs, and ensure profitability is crucial for a general manager.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities: As the face of management, the general manager needs to effectively communicate with employees, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making prowess: General managers are expected to tackle issues that affect the business's operations and make informed decisions quickly.
  • Track record of achieving operational excellence: Recruiters seek candidates who have demonstrably improved processes, efficiency, and productivity within previous roles.

Personalizing your general manager cover letter salutation

Always aim to address the recruiter from the get-go of your general manager cover letter.

  • the friendly tone (e.g. "Dear Paul" or "Dear Caroline") - if you've previously chatted up with them on social media and are on a first-name basis;
  • the formal tone (e.g. "Dear Ms. Gibbs" or "Dear Ms. Swift") - if you haven't had any previous conversation with them and have discovered the name of the recruiter on LinkedIn or the company website;
  • the polite tone (e.g. "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear HR Team") - at all costs aim to avoid the "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam", as both greetings are very old-school and vague.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Specific Department] Director,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [First Name] [Last Name],
  • Dear Dr. [Last Name],

Your general manager cover letter introduction and the value you bring

Moving on from the "Dear Recruiter" to your professional introduction .

Use those first two sentences of your general manager cover letter to present the biggest asset you'd bring to the organization.

Don't go into too much detail about your achievement or the skill set, but instead - go straight for the win.

That is - what is your value as a professional?

Would you be able to build stronger, professional relationships in any type of communication? Or, potentially, integrate seamlessly into the team?

How to select your best achievement for the middle, or the general manager cover letter body

You probably feel exhausted by this point in your application: you've dived into all the details of your success and skills in your general manager resume.

What else can you include in your general manager cover letter body ?

Well, for starters, the next three to six paragraphs should show you further value as a professional. Or, why should recruiters choose you?

Think back on a noteworthy achievement that answers key job requirements and dive deep.

Structure your general manager cover letter middle as you'd a story: following chronological logic and highlighting outcomes, thanks to skills.

At the end of the day, you'd want recruiters to be able to see you as the best candidate for the role and understand more about who you are and what makes your success unique (and valuable to the role).

Time to wrap up your general manager cover letter

Writing the closing paragraph of your general manager cover letter is just as important as the salutation.

You have to make it personalized to the job advert and recruiter.

Experienced professionals advise candidates to end with a request or reminder for follow-up. Write that you're grateful for the opportunity, and, at the same time, hint that you're available for the next steps of the process.

Otherwise, you could also conclude your general manager cover letter by facing the future. How do you see yourself, as part of the team? In particular, how would you settle in your new role in the first six months to a year?

The zero experience general manager cover letter: shifting the focus to your unique value

Don't worry if you have no conventional professional experience . Within your whole experience, there's plenty more you can write about in your general manager cover letter.

Take, for example, your biggest achievement or award - dedicate your cover letter body to describe it and the job-relevant skills you've learned.

Your professional ambitions could also take center stage. Describe what you plan on achieving in the next five to ten years and the efforts you're making towards your dreams.

Key takeaways

Winning at your job application game starts with a clear and concise general manager cover letter that:

  • Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the general manager resume;
  • Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
  • Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
  • Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
  • Ends with a call for follow-up or hints at how you'd improve the organization, team, or role.

How to Write & Format a Cover Letter Header

The header of your general manager cover letter sets the tone for your application and provides essential contact information. It's the first thing a hiring manager sees, so it's crucial to make a professional impression right from the start.

Format and Content

Your cover letter header should be aligned to the left and include the following information:

• Your full name • Your address • Your phone number • Your email address

After your contact details, add the date of writing, followed by the recipient's information:

• Hiring manager's name (if known) • Company name • Company address

If you don't know the hiring manager's name, use a professional salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Company Name] Recruitment Team."

Professional Presentation

Ensure your header is clean, easy to read, and matches the formatting of your resume for a cohesive application package. Use a professional font and appropriate spacing to make your information stand out clearly.

Remember, the header is your first opportunity to showcase your attention to detail and professionalism. A well-crafted header sets the stage for a compelling cover letter that highlights your qualifications for the general manager position.

Greeting Your Potential Employer

After crafting a professional header for your general manager cover letter, it's time to focus on the greeting. The greeting sets the tone for your letter and is your first opportunity to make a positive impression on the hiring manager.

Use a personalized greeting

Whenever possible, address the hiring manager by name. This demonstrates that you've done your research and are genuinely interested in the position. Use "Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name]" if you know the recipient's gender, or "Dear [First Name] [Last Name]" if you're unsure.

When you can't find a name

If you're unable to find the hiring manager's name after thorough research, use a professional, gender-neutral greeting such as "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear [Company Name] Recruitment Team."

Avoid outdated or overly casual greetings

Steer clear of outdated phrases like "To Whom It May Concern" or overly casual greetings like "Hey" or "Hi there." These can make your letter appear generic or unprofessional.

Double-check for accuracy

Before sending your cover letter, double-check the spelling of the recipient's name and company name to avoid any embarrassing errors that could hurt your chances of landing an interview.

Introducing Yourself in a Cover Letter

The introduction of your general manager cover letter sets the tone for your application and should immediately capture the reader's attention. This crucial section is your opportunity to make a strong first impression and entice the hiring manager to continue reading.

Craft a compelling opening

Begin with a powerful statement that highlights your most relevant qualifications or achievements. Mention the specific position you're applying for and briefly explain why you're interested in the role and company.

Demonstrate your research

Show that you've done your homework by referencing recent company news, initiatives, or values that align with your own professional goals. This demonstrates your genuine interest and proactive approach.

Highlight your unique value proposition

Briefly outline what sets you apart from other candidates and how your skills and experience make you an ideal fit for the general manager position. Focus on aspects that directly relate to the job requirements.

Keep it concise and focused

Aim for a concise introduction of 2-3 sentences that effectively conveys your enthusiasm, qualifications, and alignment with the company's needs. Remember, the goal is to pique the reader's interest and encourage them to continue reading your cover letter and resume.

Strong Example

Dear Hiring Manager,

As a seasoned General Manager with over 15 years of experience in driving operational excellence and fostering team growth, I am thrilled to apply for the General Manager position at XYZ Corporation. My proven track record of increasing revenue by 30% and reducing operational costs by 25% at my previous role with ABC Industries aligns perfectly with your company's goals for expansion and efficiency. I am excited about the opportunity to bring my strategic leadership and innovative problem-solving skills to your dynamic team.

Why is this a strong example?

This is a strong example of a Cover Letter Introduction for a General Manager position because it effectively accomplishes several key objectives. First, it immediately establishes the candidate's relevant experience and expertise, highlighting their 15 years in the field. Second, it demonstrates specific, quantifiable achievements (30% revenue increase, 25% cost reduction) that directly relate to the role's responsibilities. Third, it shows the candidate has researched the company by mentioning its goals for expansion and efficiency. Finally, it expresses enthusiasm for the position and company, while also hinting at the value the candidate can bring to the role. The introduction is concise yet informative, grabbing the reader's attention and encouraging them to continue reading the rest of the cover letter.

Weak Example

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for the General Manager position at your company. I saw the job posting online and thought I would be a good fit. I have worked in management for several years and am looking for a new opportunity to advance my career.

Why is this a weak example?

This introduction is weak for several reasons. Firstly, it uses a generic salutation ('Dear Sir/Madam') instead of addressing a specific person, which shows a lack of research and personalization. Secondly, the opening line is vague and doesn't grab the reader's attention. It fails to demonstrate enthusiasm or specific interest in the company. The candidate mentions seeing the job posting online but doesn't specify where, suggesting a lack of engagement. Additionally, the statement about being a 'good fit' is not supported by any specific qualifications or achievements. The mention of 'several years' in management is imprecise and doesn't highlight any particular skills or experiences relevant to the General Manager role. Overall, this introduction fails to make a strong first impression, differentiate the candidate, or provide compelling reasons for the employer to continue reading.

Writing the Body of Your Cover Letter

The body of your general manager cover letter is where you'll elaborate on your qualifications and demonstrate why you're the ideal candidate for the position. This section should highlight your most relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that align with the job requirements.

Highlight Key Qualifications

Focus on 2-3 of your strongest qualifications that match the job description. Provide specific examples of how you've utilized these skills in previous roles.

Showcase Leadership Experience

Emphasize your leadership abilities by describing situations where you've successfully managed teams, implemented strategies, or improved operations.

Quantify Achievements

Use concrete numbers and statistics to illustrate your accomplishments. This could include revenue growth, cost savings, or efficiency improvements you've achieved in past positions.

Demonstrate Industry Knowledge

Show your understanding of the company and industry by mentioning specific challenges or trends, and how your expertise can address them.

Express Enthusiasm

Convey your genuine interest in the position and the company. Explain why you're excited about the opportunity and how it aligns with your career goals.

Remember to tailor the body of your cover letter to the specific job and company, focusing on the most relevant aspects of your background that make you an excellent fit for the general manager role.

As a seasoned General Manager with over 15 years of experience in the retail industry, I have consistently driven revenue growth and operational excellence. At XYZ Corporation, I successfully led a team of 150+ employees, increasing annual sales by 25% and reducing operational costs by 15% through innovative process improvements. My expertise in strategic planning, team leadership, and financial management has enabled me to transform underperforming stores into top-performing locations within their respective markets. I am particularly proud of implementing a customer-centric approach that resulted in a 40% increase in customer satisfaction scores and a 30% boost in repeat business. With my proven track record of achieving results and my passion for developing high-performing teams, I am confident in my ability to drive growth and success as the General Manager at your esteemed organization.

This is a strong example of a Cover Letter Body for a General Manager position because it effectively showcases the candidate's relevant experience, quantifiable achievements, and key skills. The content is concise yet impactful, highlighting specific accomplishments that demonstrate the candidate's ability to drive revenue growth, improve operational efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction. The use of concrete metrics (e.g., 25% increase in sales, 15% reduction in costs) adds credibility to the claims and allows the hiring manager to quickly grasp the candidate's potential value. Additionally, the paragraph touches on essential General Manager competencies such as team leadership, strategic planning, and financial management, aligning the candidate's experience with typical job requirements. The confident tone and expression of enthusiasm for the role further strengthen the overall impact of the cover letter body.

I am writing to apply for the General Manager position at your company. I have worked in management for a few years and I think I would be good for this job. I am a hard worker and I like to lead teams. I can do many tasks like budgeting and hiring. Please consider me for this position.

This is a weak example for several reasons. First, it lacks specificity and fails to showcase the candidate's unique qualifications. The language is vague and generic, using phrases like 'a few years' and 'I think I would be good' which don't inspire confidence. There are no concrete examples of achievements or specific skills that relate to the General Manager role. The cover letter also doesn't demonstrate any knowledge about the company or express enthusiasm for the specific position. It's brief and superficial, missing opportunities to elaborate on leadership experience, strategic thinking, or industry knowledge. A strong cover letter should be tailored to the job, highlight relevant accomplishments, and demonstrate a clear understanding of the role and company.

How to Close Your Cover Letter

To conclude your general manager cover letter effectively, craft a strong closing paragraph that leaves a lasting impression. This final section should summarize your interest in the position, reiterate your key qualifications, and express enthusiasm for the opportunity to discuss your application further.

Begin by restating your excitement about the role and the company. Briefly mention how your skills and experience align with the position's requirements. Express confidence in your ability to contribute to the organization's success.

Next, include a call to action. Politely request an interview or meeting to further discuss your qualifications. Indicate your availability and willingness to provide additional information if needed.

Finally, thank the reader for their time and consideration. Use a professional closing salutation, such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your full name.

Remember to proofread your entire cover letter, paying special attention to the closing paragraph. Ensure that it flows smoothly with the rest of the letter and maintains a confident, professional tone throughout. A well-crafted closing can significantly enhance your chances of securing an interview and advancing in the hiring process.

Thank you for considering my application. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to [Company Name]'s continued success and growth as your next General Manager. My proven track record in strategic leadership, operational excellence, and team development aligns perfectly with your organization's goals. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my experience and skills can benefit your team and drive results. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to schedule an interview.

This is a strong cover letter closing for several reasons. First, it expresses gratitude for the reader's consideration, which is polite and professional. It then reiterates enthusiasm for the position, demonstrating genuine interest. The closing also briefly summarizes key qualifications (strategic leadership, operational excellence, team development) that match the job requirements, reinforcing the candidate's suitability. By mentioning the company's success and growth, it shows research and alignment with organizational goals. The closing is proactive, expressing a desire for an interview and providing a clear call-to-action. Finally, it maintains a confident yet respectful tone throughout, which is appropriate for a General Manager position. This closing leaves a strong final impression and encourages further action from the hiring manager.

Thanks for your time. I hope to hear from you soon. Have a nice day!

Sincerely, John Smith

This closing is weak for several reasons. First, it's overly casual and lacks professionalism, which is inappropriate for a General Manager position. The phrase 'Thanks for your time' doesn't convey genuine appreciation or enthusiasm for the opportunity. 'I hope to hear from you soon' is passive and doesn't demonstrate confidence or initiative. 'Have a nice day!' is too informal and out of place in a cover letter. The closing lacks any mention of follow-up actions or reiteration of interest in the position. It fails to leave a lasting impression or reinforce the candidate's qualifications. A stronger closing would express sincere appreciation, reaffirm interest in the role, mention readiness for next steps, and end with a more formal sign-off appropriate for executive-level communication.

5 Steps for the Perfect Management Cover Letter

We just showed you what a job-winning cover letter looks like.

Feeling ready to whip up your own cover letter ? Just follow these steps:

#1. Put Contact Information in the Header

Let's dive into how you can format a management cover letter that stands out:

Always kick off your management cover letter with your contact details. Position these at the top, mirroring how you've set them out on your resume .

Here's the rundown:

  • First and Last Name. Lead with your full name.
  • Job Title. Align the job title on your cover letter with the specific management position you're aiming for. Hiring managers handle a ton of applications for various roles; being precise about the job you're referencing streamlines things.
  • Email Address. Opt for an email that's straightforward and professional, often a blend of your names. Leave the fun, old-school email addresses out of it. So, instead of [email protected], go with something like [email protected].
  • Phone Number. Ensure the number you list is current so they can contact you without hiccups. If you're hunting for an international role, don't forget the dial code.
  • Location. Typically, your city and state or country will suffice. If you're in the market for a remote role or contemplating a move, state that on your contact info.
  • Relevant Links (optional). Toss in links to relevant sites or profiles, like your LinkedIn profile .

Once your details are in order, write down the company's information::

  • Company Name. Start with the company’s exact name.
  • Manager's Name. Try to get the name of the department's manager. The job listing, company site, or LinkedIn might help you find the information.
  • Manager’s Title. If you pinpoint the specific manager, and discover they helm the department, list their title rather than the generic “Manager.”
  • Location. The city and state or country are key, especially for multinational firms. If you wish to be more detailed, you can include the full address.
  • Email Address (Optional). If you can, include the manager’s professional email.
  • Date of Writing (Optional). Pin the date on your cover letter for that polished feel.

#2. Address the Hiring Manager

After jotting down all your essential contact details, take a moment to tailor your greeting to the person who’ll be reading your cover letter.

Steer clear from the old "To Whom It May Concern." Trust us; a personalized touch can set the right tone and make your cover letter stand out.

So, do some digging. Check the job advert, navigate the company's website, or skim through LinkedIn to identify the hiring manager for the management role you're aiming for. This could help you find their name and perhaps even their email.

If you find the hiring manager’s name and title, address them with a touch of formality. "Mr." or "Ms." followed by their surname, for example, is a perfectly acceptable greeting. But if you're treading murky waters concerning their gender or marital status, it's perfectly fine to use their entire name.

  • Dear Mr. Thompson,
  • Dear Alex Thompson,

Drawn a blank on the hiring manager? No worries! Direct your letter to the broader management team or the company as a whole:

  • Dear Management Department,
  • Dear Management Hiring Team,
  • Dear Human Resources  Team,
  • Dear Head of Management,

#3. Write an Eye-Catching Opening Statement

Hiring leads typically spend seven seconds to decide whether a prospective manager's application is worth a thorough read.

So, making a stellar first impression is pivotal for an effective management cover letter.

Your opening statement should state your name and express your keen interest in the managerial position. Demonstrating genuine enthusiasm for the sector or the specific role can significantly enhance the hiring lead's eagerness to learn more about you.

Doing your homework about the organization is also beneficial. The deeper your knowledge about the company, the better you can emphasize how harmoniously you'd fit into their company culture. This shows the hiring manager that you’re not just applying left and right, you're genuinely drawn to this specific role.

Depending on your professional experience , consider launching your cover letter with a significant accomplishment or the skills that make you the ideal candidate for the managerial role.

However, it's essential to keep your opening statement short and sweet. Your aim here is to pique the hiring manager’s curiosity and get them to go through the rest of your cover letter.

Oh, and whatever you do, steer clear of these typical cover letter mistakes that job seekers make while looking for jobs.

#4. Use the Cover Letter Body for the Details

You can use the body of your cover letter to delve deeper into why you're the right fit for the position.

The key here is not to just repeat your resume. This is your chance to elaborate on your managerial prowess and distinctive qualifications. Your mission is to convince the hiring manager that you stand out from the other candidates.

Hence, write about your notable achievements and leadership initiatives that align with management. The job ad can help you mention just the right things.

Customizing your cover letter to the specific demands of the advertised role is a winning strategy. If the job calls for experience in project management or a knack for team leadership, hone in on these aspects rather than, for instance, your expertise in a non-management-related area.

In addition, showing that you know the organization, its operations, or its industry dynamics can substantially enhance your appeal. If you have prior interactions with the company's projects or have insights into its market strategies, weave that into your cover letter. This portrays your alignment with their objectives and organizational culture.

Lastly, use the space in your cover letter to explain in more detail anything you didn’t have space for in your resume. For example, you can explain why you’re looking for a remote role and how you’ve successfully worked remotely in the past.

Are you worried about that employment gap on your resume ? Your management cover letter is your chance to talk in more detail about it.

#5. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Wrapping up your cover letter the right way is the cherry on top of your job application.

It's crucial to leave the hiring manager with a lasting impression that you’re a good fit for a role, by reiterating your most relevant skills and enthusiasm.

This is where you can also include a call to action. Encouraging them to give you a callback or send you a follow-up email to further discuss your candidacy and what sets you apart from other candidates can land you that coveted interview .

Finally, end your cover letter with poise. Use a professional but also personal signing line and then add your full name.

I'm eager to share more about how my managerial experiences align with your team’s goals. Please feel free to reach out at the contact details provided for a deeper discussion. Anticipating the possibility to delve into how I can contribute.

Warm regards,

If you feel “Warm regards” is too commonplace, consider these alternatives:

  • Yours sincerely,
  • Best regards,
  • In appreciation,
  • Thank you for your time and consideration,

#2. Emphasize Your Achievements

Here's the thing: a long list of tasks you've handled isn't as gripping as the wins you've scored.

When writing your cover letter, spotlight your achievements instead of your responsibilities. It tells hiring managers you're result-oriented and adds weight to your application.

But remember — don't merely regurgitate your resume. Weave those accomplishments into a compelling story, painting a clear picture of why you're the right fit for the role. It's about connecting the dots for them and strengthening your case.

#3. Keep It Relevant

In the management world, time is gold. So, when writing your cover letter, get straight to the point.

This means highlighting experiences and skills that directly relate to the role you're eyeing. By keeping things concise and relevant, you show the hiring manager that you understand what the role requires and can prioritize effectively.

Not to mention, it respects their time but hits at your ability to identify and focus on what truly matters.

Key Takeaways

And there you have it! An amazing management cover letter example to inspire you to write your own.

  • General Manager In Training
  • Restaurant General Manager

What Is a Cover Letter and Why Is It Important?

A cover letter is a brief letter of introduction that usually accompanies a resume . It gives you a chance to cover more information that may not be as easily conveyed in the typical bullet-point format of a resume.

When writing a cover letter , you have the opportunity to introduce yourself, highlight your skills, accomplishments, and goals, and explain what you hope to bring to the company if hired.

Parts of a General Manager Cover Letter

Whether your cover letter is geared toward an entry-level position , managerial position, job promotion , or government job , there are key parts of a standard cover-letter formula you need to include:

Your contact information

The organization’s information

Dear [Manager Name],

First paragraph: intent and opening hook

Second paragraph: main body with key skills and accomplishments in relation to the job requirements

Third paragraph: closing lines with a compelling call to action

Best regards, followed by name and title

You have only one page to grab a hiring manager ’s attention, so you need to make every sentence count. The strongest cover letters are creative while remaining professional.

If graphic design isn’t your thing, utilize free cover letter templates to ensure your layout is professional.

Search For General Manager Jobs

General manager cover letter opening.

It’s essential to include the basic contact information for both you and the company you are applying at the top of the letter. Remember, you want to make it as easy as possible for a hiring manager to contact you.

If possible, address your cover letter to the hiring manager by name. If you don’t know the hiring manager’s name , use a gender-neutral greeting such as “Dear [Company Name] Recruitment Manager.”

Tip: “Dear Sir or Madam” isn’t likely to score you any originality points when it comes to a good first impression. The impersonal greeting feels generic and indicates that you’re sending a mass cover letter to multiple employers without taking the time to personalize each one to the specific position.

While a neutral “ Dear Hiring Manager” or similar phrase is acceptable in lieu of a name, consider mentioning the company and/or department to make it a little more personalized.

The first two sentences of your opening need to immediately hook a hiring manager’s attention. Start by assertively announcing your application to the position and following it with an impactful accomplishment.

Numbers are particularly eye-catching, so if you can quantify your claim with statistics, percentages, or dollar amounts, your letter is much less likely to end up in the “pass” pile without even getting a full read.

Example Cover Letter Opening:

Jane Doe General Manager 9876 Home Avenue Sample, NC 27010 123-867-5309 [email protected] linkedin.com/in/janedoe March 10, 2021 John Smith Operations Manager Big Global Company 5432 Bustle Street Commerce, CA 94108 Dear Mr. Smith, I am applying for the General Manager position at Big Global Company. In my previous role as general manager at Ecom, I led four cross-functional teams to increase revenue by $2 million per year and cut costs by 28% over a three-year period. I believe a position at Big Global Company is the right choice for my skill set, experience, and career goals.

Note that the applicant in the example used specific growth measurements instead of relying on market buzzwords and empty, generic claims about increasing revenue and cutting costs. This technique is much more likely to garner attention.

General Manager Cover Letter Body

Now that you have a hiring manager’s attention, you need to keep it. To prove that you’re a worthy candidate for the position, you need to explain:

Why you want this job

The skills that qualify you for the specific requirements of the job

Why you are the perfect fit for the position

You might be surprised by how many applicants drop the ball here by prattling off a list of general skills and accomplishments that have nothing to do with the specifics of the job listing.

To stand apart from the noise of the competition, you need to prove that you did your research and fully understand what’s expected of you in this job position, then directly tie your skills to the company’s needs.

Example Cover Letter Body:

My primary goal is to drive revenue for a customer-focused global leader in the eCommerce industry, and I’m especially interested in the culture, innovation, and potential for future development with Big Global Company. Your job listing on Indeed specifies that you’re searching for a leader to act as a liaison between the product development, customer service , and distribution center departments, as well as negotiate shipping contracts and optimize distribution efficiency. My track record at Ecom proves that I have those necessary skills: Department liaison: Managed four separate teams totaling 103 employees and reduced company turnover by 12% due to implementing employee incentive programs and quarterly team-building activities . Negotiate shipping contracts: Created proposals for three different shipping companies and successfully negotiated a new deal with a carrier to decrease shipping costs by 15% without sacrificing delivery time for customers. Optimize distribution efficiency: Completed a detailed cost-benefit analysis and implemented new procedures and equipment to increase revenue by an average of $2 million per year.

Note that the applicant clearly understands what is expected in the job description and breaks down her exact qualifications to meet every requirement in a concise, easy-to-read format.

General Manager Cover Letter Closing Lines

So far, so good, but now you have to keep up the momentum and cross the finish line with a strong closing . The ending may not seem as relevant as the rest of the letter, but remember that you have to make sure you leave a lasting impression.

That being said, don’t drag it out with unnecessary fluff. You’ve made your point; now drive it home with a quick recap and optimistic closing to remind the hiring manager why you are the right candidate for the job .

Example Cover Letter Closing:

I look forward to discussing how my strategic management, analytical perspective, and thorough knowledge of Shopify, NetSuite, Fonality, and ShipStation can translate to cost savings and revenue gains for Big Global Company over the next year and decade. Best regards, Jane Doe General Manager 123-867-5309 [email protected]

Note that the applicant didn’t just say “ Thanks for your time ” and leave her strong pitch hanging. She wrapped up her closing in a way that demonstrates her knowledge, enthusiasm, desire for the company’s success, and goal of being with this company long-term.

Example of a General Manager Cover Letter

Putting all the parts together illustrates how the ideal cover letter should start with an attention-grabber right off the bat and keep that same level of energy and competency throughout the entire pitch.

My track record at Ecom proves that I have those necessary skills: Department liaison: Managed four separate teams totaling 103 employees and reduced company turnover by 12% due to implementing employee incentive programs and quarterly team-building activities. I look forward to discussing how my strategic management, analytical perspective , and thorough knowledge of Shopify, NetSuite, Fonality, and ShipStation can translate to cost savings and revenue gains for Big Global Company over the next year and decade. Tips for a General Manager Cover Letter

Use confident language. This is a managerial position, not an entry-level job , so a hiring manager will expect leadership and confidence in a candidate. Instead of using timid words and phrases like “might have” or “possibly” to undermine your skills, choose absolute phrases like “I do have” or “I am confident that.”

Cite quantifiable achievements to make a bigger impact. Instead of saying, “I helped my previous company grow its annual revenue,” give a specific number: “I facilitated an annual 28% growth increase.”

Expand on relevant experience and skills listed in your resume . A cover letter provides an opportunity to elaborate and put resume points into a larger context.

This especially applies to any sort of leadership, coaching, and team-building that you can cite, as these are important points to a hiring manager searching for a candidate who can upskill and mentor a team .

Final Thoughts

Instead of dreading the cover letter and contemplating whether you should opt out when a job application states that a cover letter is optional, think of it as an extra opportunity to introduce yourself and make your case.

The extra effort can go a long way, especially if you’re applying for a management position where doing the bare minimum just doesn’t cut it.

Even if you have a great resume, the cover letter just might be that final wow factor that elevates your application above someone who either didn’t send a cover letter or didn’t put the same level of time and care into drafting it as you did.

Strategies to Write an Impactful Manager Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

When applying to a management position, one of the first considerations you need to make is the company’s core needs and what processes you’ll be performing.

For example, applying to a recruiting management position would require some different skills than an HR manager. The recruiting professional may focus on outreach and networking, whereas the HR manager may focus more on daily performance management and problem-solving. Therefore, create a tailored cover letter each time to ensure you stand out.

application letter for a general manager position

Make an impact with the greeting and intro of your manager cover letter

You understand the importance of personability in management, where employee and customer relations are fundamental skill sets .

The same is true for your manager cover letter, so starting with a personalized greeting addressed to a specific hiring manager is an excellent idea. Otherwise, simply leading with “Dear [company name] hiring staff” works well, too, if you can’t find a specific person’s name.

Then, you want to make an impact and connect with the company and its managerial needs in the first paragraph. Rephrasing the company mission and how your leadership or team-building skills fit in can be a great way to impress from the get-go.

What you shouldn’t do is not address anyone specifically or sound like you could be applying to any company and management position, like the example below.

Not specific enough!

I was enthused to see the management position opening at your company. I think this is a great business to work for and would be eager to apply my skills to your needs.

Instead, aim for a well-thought-out opener like the one below that shows exactly how the applicant’s crisis intervention and quality assurance skills fit in with the Valley Children’s Healthcare organization’s needs.

A thoughtful opener that will impress!

application letter for a general manager position

Prove your management abilities with an effective cover letter body

When you get into the cover letter body, it’s time to show exactly why you’re skills and work experience make you a qualified management candidate.

Ideally, you want to showcase essential metrics in this section. Some common numbers managers may want to lean on include efficiency, employee satisfaction, or cost reductions.

Additionally, any relevant education or certifications that show your knowledgeable background will be beneficial. For instance, someone applying to be an accounts receivable manager would benefit from showcasing the financial analysis skills they gained through their accounting or business finance degree.

A nicely detailed body paragraph!

Create an actionable closing and sign off for your manager cover letter

As you come to the end of your manager cover letter, the last step is finishing with a closing that inspires action from hiring managers.

A great place to start is relating back to the company mission and the skills you presented throughout the other sections of your cover letter. For instance, how you’ll use your lead gen management skills to help an environmentally friendly company continue growing its positive ecological impact.

Lastly, it’s best practice to thank the hiring manager for their time and end with a light call to action like “I look forward to hearing from you soon.” It’s the same as how you’d want to end a business proposal or interaction with a customer to achieve the best results.

The closer below is a good start, but notice it doesn’t quite hit the mark since it lacks any job-specific information about the management position that will grab a hiring manager’s attention.

Lacking job-specific information!

Thanks for reading my cover letter. I’m really interested in this management position, so I hope to hear from you soon.

Daniel Rodriguez

Instead, create a closer like the one below that clearly connects the candidate’s passion for Shell Oil’s innovations and sustainable development initiatives.

A relatable closer based on the position’s needs!

Cover letters for management positions should be one page in length. Keep it concise and relevant to key positional needs like scheduling or process improvement.

Aim to match the job description’s tone to show how your management style will fit in with the company culture. For example, if the job description uses a serious and knowledgeable tone, you should try to match that and could benefit from explaining how you thrive at creating a professional and educated company culture.

Unlike your resume, you shouldn’t use bullet points in a cover letter. Instead, break up information about your management skills into defined paragraphs. For instance, you could have one body paragraph explaining how you improved employee satisfaction in a previous job and another paragraph describing how you reduced production costs by 24%.

Writing a Cover Letter for a General Manager Position

When you're applying for a job, a cover letter is the best way to attract positive attention to your resume. Serving as a letter of introduction, it can express your interest in a company, demonstrate your qualifications for a general manager position and establish your abilities to communicate effectively. A good cover letter is an effective tool to get your foot in the door for an interview.

application letter for a general manager position

Format Your Letter Professionally

Although it may be tempting to exercise creativity as you put together your application, resist the urge and opt, instead, for a professional approach. Include your contact information (name, mailing address, phone number and email address) in a block at the top of your document in a header format. A couple of lines below the header, put the date you are writing your letter, aligned on the left side. Address the hiring manager or other appropriate professional by name. Your letter should appear businesslike with a single-spaced body and easy-to-read font. Calibri, Times New Roman and Arial are more traditionally accepted fonts. Add a single-space line between paragraphs, and use three single-space lines between your closing and your name. Your signature will go in that space. Close with "Sincerely" or "Regards." Keep your style and language consistent throughout, with margins of no more than 1.5 inches. If you are sending your letter as a hard copy, be sure to sign it in ink.

More For You

Should you send a cover letter with a resume if it is not requested, how to negotiate a flexible work schedule in a cover letter, good salutations for cover letters, how to politely turn down a job offer i already accepted, ten tips on how to make sure you get chosen for the job, explain your purpose.

The first paragraph introduces you and tells the reader why you are writing the letter and sending your resume. Explain that you are interested in an available general manager position. State where you saw the opening listed or how you heard that the company was hiring. Briefly state some basic knowledge you have about the organization and elaborate why you are interested in working for them, especially as a general manager. If you don't know much about the company, do some research before writing the letter.

Show That You Can Do The Job

Following the introductory paragraph, write a new paragraph explaining how you meet the job requirements. Highlight your education and experience that qualify you for the job. Briefly share information about any awards or achievements you've earned that relate directly to the general manager position. Provide examples of how you've exhibited leadership or specific instances where you've managed others. Cover all the details you want to include, but remember, you aren't repeating your resume. Avoid listing irrelevant facts that don't support your argument that you are the right person for the job. The purpose of the cover letter is to entice the recipient to read your resume. Limit your letter to one page in length.

Conclude Your Letter Strongly

In a final paragraph, reiterate how your skills, talents and experience align with the company and the traits they are seeking in an applicant. Thank the reader for considering your application and encourage her to contact you, in case she needs more details about your qualifications or wants to schedule an interview. If you feel comfortable with the idea, show initiative by stating that you will contact her within a couple of weeks to check on the status of your application. Demonstrating your comfort and confidence in contacting a potential employer may convince a reader that you have the skills for a management position. Carefully proofread your letter before sending it. A letter full of errors or misspellings will not get you an interview.
