A few days back, Tesla announced the Second Generation of Powerwall – its battery system, but in May 2015, when Musk had publically announced the launch of Powerwall, the world had to take notice of his presentation, because it was inspiring in more than one ways.

Well, he began this presentation with highlighting how the global environment was worsening due to the pollution from fossil fuel based power generation plants, and then took it forward to explain how solar energy could resolve this issue and the role of Tesla’s new battery system in this mission. He also talked about product availability and price.

Seems like a regular Table of Contents, huh? Then, what is so likable about his style? Here are the highlights as to what works out well to make Elon Musk a truly inspiring presenter.

Elon Musk – As a speaker:

It is a clever combination of the vision and how he delivers his message – that received a big applause across the globe. He anchors a frank, honest, genuine and engaging conversation throughout, without any shade of manipulation. No glitter, no fluffs. However, he passes on his message to everyone, and in the most sensible manner. Here is how:

Start with a right target and scenario:

Ambiguity kills the interest. Keeping this in mind, Musk began with targeting the worldwide use of fossil fuels to generate electricity and the effects on the environment. He used the graphical presentation and ran two scenarios: with fossil fuels and with naturally available solar power. Even the images were chosen smartly which clearly indicated the superiority of solar energy over the polluting, dirty fossil fuels. This simplified it for the audience to co-relate the product concept with the present day crisis, and also helped them switch between two different states and compare them against each other to blow away any objections.

Focus on fundamentals and need of an hour:

The followers of Musk would admit that every time he connects with his audience, he throws up some out-of-the-box ideas, all of which offers something to improve our lives. Against this visionary trait, those minute slips and frequently heard fillers in speech do not matter. The world recognizes him as a person of ideas and since decades, he has been seeing and realizing his world-changing dreams. In the case of Powerwall too, he focused on transmitting the crucial issues with environment, all on the account of the heavy usage of fossil fuels and how the solar energy could take care of it.

Make a contextual and meaningful comparison of data:

When you sell a product with high technical details along with the universal application, it is important that you represent the data in a clever way that makes sense to the most novice part of the audience. The capability to deal with data and statistics could differ from individual to individual and the trick to tackle this is to use various known contexts against which you can compare your data. This is what Musk has done throughout the presentation.

The best contextual explanation was the “Blue Square” and “One Pixel”: He showed a tiny spot on Texas – the “Blue Square” – in the blank map of the US to contextually present as to how much land area would be covered by the solar panels to empower the US. And in that Blue Square, he put a red dot. Later on, he zoomed in the screen and described that dot as a single pixel, which indicated the space used for the batteries in this endeavor.

He also talked about Powerpack, the device with a working principle similar to Powerwall, but with multiple times higher in the capacity. While talking about Powerpack, he again made a smart use of context to help the data look more digestible and easily achievable.

Motivate them to an immediate action:

Be it an eBook subscription or buying battery, it is important that you make your audience believe why they need to take action today and why they just should not delay it further. The reason why it is hard to close the sales call is that the target audience always has that notion that things were pretty Ok even before this product came into the market so why it has suddenly been a call for an action. Things would work out themselves etc. So, the catch behind every successful sales call is to make the audience feel that today is the right time, and any further delay would bring a catastrophe. That’s called the sense of urgency, which is what Musk smartly advocated by the CO2 concentration data and follow up statements like “we should collectively do something about this..”

Perceived problems v/s proposed solutions:

It is imperative that you lay down the commonly perceived hurdles right before they arise in the minds of your audience and also offer solutions to them. This elevates your status in the eyes of your audience and boosts their confidence on your product as they feel that you have done a required legwork. Musk effectively applied this tip when he talked about problems with currently used batteries, the need for Powerwall (to store the solar energy during the daylight) and the land requirements explained with the help of “Blue Square” context (as mentioned before).

Word selection – Simple and engaging:

Musk knows the pulse of the audience, in the sense that he uses layman terms to present the techiest of the information in an understandable manner. He has the skill to talk about his great and fantastic ideas in a way everyone can relate.

Essentially, it’s a sales pitch and must solve the purpose. The presentation was meant for a wider market and so data representation in generic terms was a key to keeping the interest of the audience intact. The entire 18-minutes slot was exciting and filled with humor wherever possible.

Attitude matters:

As a speaker, Musk has a humble, approachable and also a bit of casual attitude due to which he looks realistic and far away from those well-practiced speeches. His honesty appears effortlessly and pays him well all the way! In fact, he has not attempted to seem flamboyant in spite of having a real breakthrough in his hands for tackling the global environmental challenge. Modesty is always inspirational. He focuses more on convincing the audience about how relevant his idea is.

Make it memorable with the use of live evidence:

You can’t under-rate the importance of the early users of your products and/or beta versions as well as the testimonials which work for building a first-hand image for your product. It made the presentation all the more memorable when Musk revealed that the auditorium rooftop had solar panels installed, who fed the Powerwall and powered the entire building (where the talk was held) that night. He also asked the cameras to show the meters which were displaying that there was no grid-based energy used at all! The howling was terrible because the audience was amazed by what they were experiencing.

Break the stereotypes:

Differentiation helps create lasting memories, and so, Musk broke many industry stereotypes. The audience also included industry fans and avid supporters who kept on cheering up on each punch. And so, unlike other automobile launches, this launch show appeared entertaining and catchy. Also, Musk revealed the cost of the device. The automobile industry peers do not disclose crucial facts like price or even simple estimates too, during the launch.

Keep it concise and straight:

TED has researched that an ideal presentation length should not be more than 18 minutes, which is the threshold for an average man’s listening capacity. Musk could keep it simple, to-the-point and precise so as to finish it within 18 minutes. To punch with the power, he used various means such as graphs, images, videos as well as the physical products.

Storytelling Approach:

Musk used a storytelling approach. Use of impactful images and less text to support the scenarios. The image display was stunning and able to create a necessary extent of distress regarding worsening environment and also the promising success of the solar energy. Other notable features:

SpaceX has published Elon Musk's presentation about colonizing Mars — here's the full transcript and slides

In late September, billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk debuted a fresh plan for colonizing Mars with 1 million people.

The focus of Musk's new presentation, which updates a 2016 talk he gave at the International Astronautical Congress, was the " Big F---ing Rocket ," or BFR.

Musk told a crowd at the 2017 IAC meeting in Adelaide, Australia, that he hopes to start building the 35-story space vehicle in early 2018, launch the first BFR to Mars in 2022, and use it to land crewed missions on the red planet in 2024 (though he has yet to say how a Martian colony would survive ).

In addition, Musk teased the use of the space vehicles as part of a high-speed transportation system around Earth .

After Musk's talk on September 28, a Reddit user transcribed the full 42-minute-long presentation, and SpaceX published a high-resolution version of Musk's slides to its Mars website last week, a company spokesperson confirmed with Business Insider.

I'm going to talk more about what it takes to become a multi-planet species. And just a brief refresher on why this is important: I think fundamentally the future is vastly more exciting and interesting if we're a space-faring civilization and a multi-planet species than if we're not.

You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think "the future's going to be great". And that's what being a space-faring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars. That's why.

So let me go into more detail on becoming a multi-planet species. This is the updated design for the — well, we're sort of searching for the right name, but the code name, at least, is BFR [Big F---ing Rocket]. Probably the most important thing that I want to convey in this presentation is that I think we have figured out how to pay for it. This is very important.

In last year's presentation, we were really searching for what the right way... how do we pay for this thing? We went through various ideas, Kickstarter, collecting underpants, these didn't pan out. But now we think we've got a way to do it, which is to have a smaller vehicle — it's still pretty big — but one that can do everything that's needed in the greater-Earth-orbit activity. So essentially we want to make our current vehicles redundant. We want to have one system, one booster and ship, that replaces Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy , and Dragon.

If we can do that, then all the resources that are used for Falcon 9, Heavy, and Dragon can be applied to this system. That's really fundamental.

So let's see what progress have we made in this direction.

Last time you saw the giant tank — that's actually a 12-meter tank. It's 1,000 cubic meters of volume inside. That's actually more pressurized volume than an [Airbus] A380, to put that into perspective.

We developed a new carbon fiber matrix that's much stronger and more capable at cryo than anything before, and it holds 1,200 tons of liquid oxygen.

So we tested it. We successfully tested it up to its design pressure — and then went a little further. So we wanted to see where it would break, and we found out. It shot about 300 feet into the air and landed in the ocean — we fished it out.

We've now got a pretty good sense of what it takes to create a huge carbon fiber tank that can hold cryogenic liquid. That's actually extremely important for making a light spaceship.

The next key element is on the engine side: We have to have an extremely efficient engine. The Raptor engine will be the highest thrust to weight ratio of any kind of engine ever made. We already have now 1,200 seconds of firing across 42 main engine tests. We've fired it for 100 seconds — it could fire much longer than 100 seconds, that's just the size of the test tanks.

The duration of the firing you see right now is about 40 seconds, which is the length of the firing for landing on Mars. The test engine currently operates at 200 atmospheres, or 200 bar. The flight engine will be at 250 bar, and we believe that over time we can get that to a little over 300 bar.

The next key element is propulsive landing. So in order to land on places like the moon, where there is no atmosphere and certainly no runways, or to land on Mars, where the atmosphere is too thin to land — even if there were runways — to land with a wing, you really have to get propulsive landing perfect. So that's what we've been practicing with Falcon 9.

So this is just a series of landing videos... it's quite mesmerizing. But we now have 16 successful landings in a row [ibid. 12 in a row, though 16 total successful landings] — and that's really without any redundancy. So Falcon 9 lands on a single engine — the final landing is always done with a single engine, whereas BFR will always have multi-engine-out capability.

If you can get to a very high reliability with even a single engine, and then you can land with either of two engines, I think we can get to a landing reliability that is on par with the safest commercial airliners. So you can essentially count on the landing.

And it can also land with very high precision. In fact, we believe the precision at this point is good enough for propulsive landing that we do not need legs for the next version. It will land with so much precision that it will land back on its launch mounts.

The launch rate is also increasing exponentially. Particularly when you take refilling on-orbit into account, and taking the idea of establishing a self-sustaining base on Mars or the moon or elsewhere seriously, you need thousands of ships, and tens of thousands of re-tanking or re-refilling operations, which means that you need many launches per day. In terms of how many landings are occurring, you really need to be looking at your watch, not your calendar. So while this is quite a high launch rate here, by conventional standards, it's still a every small launch rate compared to what will ultimately be needed.

For those who are unfamiliar with how many orbital launches occur every year, it's approximately 60 orbital launches occur per year. Which means if SpaceX does do something like 30 launches next year, it'll be approximately half of all orbital launches that occur on Earth.

The next thing... A key technology is automated rendezvous and docking.

In order to re-tank or refill the spaceship in orbit, you have to be able to rendezvous and dock with the spaceship with very high precision, and transfer propellant. That's one of the things that we've perfected with Dragon. Dragon [2] will do an automated rendezvous and docking without any pilot control, to the Space Station. Dragon 1 currently uses the Canadarm for final placement onto the Space Station. Dragon 2, which launches next year, will not need to use the Canadarm. Dragon 2 will directly dock with the Space Station, and it can do so with zero human intervention — just press "Go", and it will dock.

Dragon has also allowed us to perfect heat shield technology. When you enter at high velocity, you melt almost anything. The reason meteors reach Earth is because they melt or disintegrate before they reach the ground, unless they're very big. So you have to have a sophisticated heat shield technology that can withstand unbelievably high temperatures. And that's what we've been perfecting with Dragon. And also a key part of any planet-colonizing system.

So Falcon 1, this is where we started out. A lot of people really only heard of SpaceX only relatively recently. So they may think Falcon 9 and Dragon instantly appeared and that's how it always was. But it wasn't. We started with just a few people, who really didn't know how to make rockets.

The reason I ended up being the chief engineer or chief designer was not because I wanted to, it's because I couldn't hire anyone; nobody good would join. It ended up being that by default. I messed up the first three launches, the first three launches failed. Fortunately the fourth launch — that was the last money that we had — the fourth launch worked, or that would have been it for SpaceX. But fate liked us that day. So the fourth launch worked.

Just think: Today is the ninth anniversary of that launch. I didn't realize that until I was told that just earlier today. This is a pretty emotional day, actually. Falcon 1 was quite a small rocket. When we were doing Falcon 1, we were trying to figure out what is the smallest useful payload that we could get to orbit. We thought, "ok, something around half a ton to orbit," that could launch a decent-size satellite.

But it's really quite small compared to Falcon 9. So Falcon 9, particularly when [you] factor in payload, Falcon 9 is many times more — on the order of 30 times more payload — than Falcon 1. And Falcon 9 has reuse of the primary booster, which is the most expensive part of the rocket, and hopefully soon reuse of the fairing, the nosecone at the front. We think we can probably get to somewhere between 70% and 80% reusability with the Falcon 9 system.

And hopefully towards the end of this year we'll be launching Falcon Heavy. Falcon Heavy ended up being a much more complex program than we thought. It sounds easy, it sounds like it should be easy because it's two first stages of Falcon 9's strapped on as boosters. It's actually not — we had to redesign almost everything except the upper stage in order to take the increased loads. So Falcon Heavy ended up being much more a new vehicle than we realized. So it took us a lot longer to get it done, but the boosters have all now been tested, and they're on their way to Cape Canaveral.

And we are now beginning serious development of BFR. So you can see the payload difference is quite dramatic.

BFR in fully reusable configuration, without any orbital refueling, we expect to have a payload capability of 150 tons to low-Earth orbit, and that compares to about 30 for Falcon Heavy, which is partially reusable. Where this really makes a tremendous difference is in the cost, which I'll come to in some of the later slides.

With BFR you can get a sense of scale by looking at the tiny person there. It's really quite a big vehicle. The main body diameter is about nine meters or 30 feet. The booster is lifted by 31 Raptor engines that produce a thrust of about 5,400 tons, lifting a 4,400-ton vehicle straight up.

Just the basics about the ship - 48-meter length, dry mass we're expecting to be about 85 tons, technically our design says about 75 tons, but inevitably there's mass growth. That ship will contain 1,100 tons of propellant, with an ascent design of 150 tons and return mass of 50 [tons]. You can think of this as essentially combining the upper stage of the rocket with Dragon — it's like the Falcon 9 upper stage and Dragon were combined.

I'll go into each of these items in detail.

You've got the engine section in the rear, the propellant tanks in the middle, and then a large payload bay in the front. That payload bay's actually 8 stories tall. In fact you can fit a whole stack of Falcon 1 rockets in the payload bay. Compared to the design I showed last time, you can see that there's a small delta wing at the back of the rocket.

The reason for that is in order to expand the mission envelope of the BFR spaceship. Depending on whether you're landing on a planet or a moon that has no atmosphere, a thin atmosphere, or a dense atmosphere, and depending on whether you're reentering with no payload in the front, a small payload, or a heavy payload, you have to balance the rocket out as it's coming in.

So the delta wing at the back, which also includes a split flap for pitch and roll control allows us to control the pitch angle despite having a wide range of payloads in the nose and a wide range of atmospheric densities. We were trying to avoid having to have the delta wing, but it was necessary in order to generalize the capability of the spaceship such that it could land anywhere in the solar system.

Let's look at a couple of things in detail.

The cargo area has a pressurized volume of 825 cubic meters. This also is greater than the pressurized [volume] of an A380. It really is capable of carrying a tremendous amount of payload. In a Mars-transit configuration, you'd essentially be taking three months in a really good scenario, but maybe as much as six months — some number of months — you'd probably want a cabin, and not just a seat.

So the Mars-transit configuration consists of 40 cabins, and it sort of depends on... You could conceivably have five or six people per cabin, if you really wanted to crowd people in, but I think mostly we would expect to see two or three people per cabin, and so nominally about 100 people per flight to Mars. And then there's a central storage area and galley, and a solar storm shelter, an entertainment area, and I think probably a good situation for at least BFR version one.

Then going to the main body of the vehicle... the center body area, this is where the propellant is located. And this is sub-cooled methane and oxygen. As you chill the methane and oxygen below its liquid point, you get a fairly meaningful density increase — you get on the order of 10% to 12% density increase, which makes quite a big difference for the propellant load. So you'd expect to carry 240 tons of CH4 and 860 tons of oxygen.

In the fuel tank are header tanks. So when you come in for a landing, your orientation may change quite significantly, so you can't have the propellant just sloshing all over in main tanks — you have to have the header tanks, that can feed the main engines with precision. That's what you see in the fuel tank.

Then the engine section. The ship engine section consists of four vacuum Raptor engines and two sea-level engines. All six engines are capable of gimbaling. The engines with the high-expansion ratio have a relatively small gimbal area/gimbal range, and a slower gimbal rate. The two center engines have a very high gimbal range and can gimbal very quickly. And you can land the ship with either one of the two center engines.

So when you come in for a landing, it will light both engines, but if one of the center engines fails at any point, it will land successfully with the other engine. And then within each engine there's a great deal of redundancy. So we want the landing risk to be as close to zero as possible. And there's some basic stats about the engines [...].

Now, this is version one. Over time, there's potential to increase that specific impulse by five to 10 seconds, and as was mentioned also increase the chamber pressure by 50 bar or so.

And then for refilling, we just saw the two ships would actually mate at the rear section. They would use the same mating interface that they use to connect to the booster on liftoff. So we would reuse that mating interface, and reuse the propellant fill lines that are used when the ship is on the booster.

And then to transfer propellant it becomes very simple: You use control thrusters to accelerate in the direction that you want to empty. So in this direction, the propellant goes that way, and you transfer the propellant very easily from the tanker to the ship.

So going to rocket capability, This gives you sort of a rough sense of rocket capability, starting off at the low end with a half ton, going up to BFR, with 150. So I think it's important to note that BFR has more capability than Saturn V, even with full reusability.

But here's the really important fundamental point. Let's look at the launch cost. The order reverses.

At first glance, this may seem ridiculous. But it's not. The same is true of aircraft. If you bought, say, a small single-engine turboprop aircraft, that would be $1.5 to $2 million. To charter a 747 from California to Australia is half a million dollars — there and back. The single-engine turboprop can't even get to Australia. So a fully reusable giant aircraft like the 747 costs a third as much as an expendable tiny aircraft. In one case you have to build an entire aircraft, in the other case you just have to refuel something.

It's really crazy that we build these sophisticated rockets and then crash them every time we fly — this is mad! I can't emphasize how profound this is, and how important reusability is. And often I'll be told "yeah, but you get more payload if you made it expendable." I say yes — you could also get more payload from an aircraft if you get rid of the landing gear and the flaps, and just parachuted out when you got to your destination — but that would be crazy, and you would sell zero aircraft. So reusability is absolutely fundamental.

Now I want to talk about the value of orbital refilling. This is also extremely important. If you just fly BFR to orbit and don't do any refilling, it's pretty good — you'll get 150 tons to low earth orbit, and have no fuel to go anywhere else.

However, if you send up tankers and refill in orbit, you could refill the tanks up all the way to the top, and get 150 tons all the way to Mars.

And if the tanker has high reuse capability, then you're just paying for the cost of propellant. The cost of oxygen is extremely low, and the cost of methane is extremely low. So if that's all you're dealing with, the cost of refilling your spaceship on orbit is tiny, and you can get 150 tons all the way to Mars. So automated rendezvous, and docking, and refilling, absolutely fundamental.

So then getting back to the question of how do we pay for this system, this is really quite a profound — I won't call it breakthrough, but realization that if we can build a system that cannibalizes our own products, makes our own products redundant, then all of the resources, which are quite enormous, that are used for Falcon 9, Heavy, and Dragon, can be applied to one system.

Some of our customers are conservative and they want to see BFR fly several times before they're comfortable launching in it, so what we plan to do is to build ahead, and have a stock of Falcon 9 and Dragon vehicles, so that customers can be comfortable if they want to use the old rocket, the old spacecraft, they can do that, we'll have a bunch in stock. But then all of our resources will then turn towards building BFR. And we believe that we can do this with the revenue we receive for launching satellites and for servicing the space station.

So going to the satellites portion, the size of this being a nine-meter diameter vehicle is a huge enabler for new satellites. We can actually send something that is almost nine meters in diameter to orbit. So for example, if you wanted to do a new Hubble, you could send a mirror that has 10 times the surface area of the current Hubble, as a single unit — it doesn't have to unfold or anything. Or you could send a large number of small satellites.

You can actually also go around and, if you wanted to, collect old satellites or clean up space debris, you could just sort of use chomper over there and collect satellites and space debris... That may be something we have to do in the future. That fairing would open up and retract and come back down. It enables launching of Earth satellites that are significantly larger than anything that we've done before, or significantly more satellites at a time than anything that's been done before.

It's also intended to be able to service the space station, I know it looks a little big relative to the space station, but the shuttle also looked big, so it'll work. Looks a little outsized but it'll work. It'll be capable of doing what Dragon does today, in terms of transporting cargo, and what Dragon 2 will do, in terms of transporting crew and cargo.

It can also go much further than that, like for example the moon. Based on the calculations we’ve done, we can actually do lunar surface missions, with no propellant production on the surface of the moon. So if we do a high elliptic parking orbit for the ship, and re-tank in high-elliptic orbit, we can go all the way to the moon, and back, with no local propellant production on the moon.

That would enable the creation of Moon Base Alpha, or some sort of lunar base. Quite captivating. You can also see, for example, how you transfer cargo from the cargo bay down to the ground is a crane — it's not very complicated [...] It's 2017. I mean, we should have a lunar base by now. What the hell's going on?

And then of course Mars, and becoming a multi-planet species. Beats the hell out of being a single-planet species.

So we'd start off by sending a mission to Mars, where it would obviously be just landing on rocky ground or dusty ground, and it's the same approach that I mentioned before which is you send the spaceship up to orbit, you re-tank or refill it until it has full tanks, and it travels to Mars, lands on Mars.

For Mars you will need local propellant production. But Mars has a CO2 atmosphere, and plenty of water ice, that gives you CO2 and H2O, you can therefore make CH4 and O2 using the Sabatier process. Probably the  Sabatier process.

I should mention that long-term, this can also be done on Earth. I get some criticism for "why are you using combustion in rockets and you have electric cars? Isn't there some way to make an electric rocket?" I wish there was. But in the long term, you can use solar power to extract CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water, and produce fuel and oxygen for the rocket.

So the same thing that we do on Mars, we can do on Earth in the long term. But that's essentially what happens, similar to the moon, you land on Mars, but the tricky thing with Mars is we do need to build a propellant depot to refill the tanks and return to Earth. But because Mars has lower gravity than Earth, you do not need a booster.

So you go all the way from the surface of Mars to the surface of Earth, just using the ship, albeit you need to go to max payload number about 20-50 tons for the return journey to work. But it's a single stage, all the way back to Earth.

And I'll show you the — so this is a true physics simulation, this will last about a minute, so you come in, you're entering very quickly, you're going about 7.5 kilometers a second. For Mars, there will be some ablation of the heat shield. So it's just like a sort of brake pad wearing away. It is a multi-use heat shield, but unlike for Earth operations, it's coming in hot enough that you will see some wear of the heat shield.

But because Mars has an atmosphere, albeit not a particularly dense one, you can remove almost all of the energy aerodynamically. And we've proven out supersonic retro-propulsion many times with Falcon 9, so we feel very comfortable about that. You can see it's sort of a mesh system, it's not designed to be particularly pretty, but the size of the cone gives you a rough approximation for how much thrust the engines are producing.

That's not a typo, although it is aspirational. So we've already started building the system. The tooling for the main tanks has been ordered, the facility is being built. We will start construction of the first ship around the second quarter of next year, so in about six to nine months we should start building the first ship.

I feel fairly confident that we can complete the ship and be ready for a launch in about five years. Five years seems like a long time to me. The area under the curve of resources over that period of time should enable this timeframe to be met, but if not this timeframe I think pretty soon thereafter. But that's our goal, is to try to make the 2022 Mars rendezvous. The Earth-Mars synchronization happens roughly every two years. So every two years, there's an opportunity to fly to Mars.

So then in 2024 we want to try to fly four ships, two of which would be crewed — two cargo and two crew. The goal of these initial missions is to find the best source of water — that's for the first mission. And then for the second mission, the goal is to build the propellant plant.

So we should, particularly with six ships, have plenty of landed mass to construct the propellant depot, which will consist of a large array of solar panels — very large array — and then everything necessary to mine and refine water, and then draw the CO2 out of the atmosphere, and then create and store deep-cryo CH4 and O2.

Then build up the base, starting with one ship, then multiple ships, then start building up the city, then making the city bigger... and even bigger. And over time terraforming Mars, and making it really a nice place to be. [Audience member: "You can do it, Elon!"] Thanks!

I think that's quite a beautiful picture. And on the prior slide, it's interesting to note on Mars, dawn and dusk are blue — the sky is blue during dawn and dusk, and red during the day — it's the opposite of Earth.

But there's something else. If you build a ship that's capable of going to Mars, what if you take that same ship, and go from one place to another on Earth? So we looked at that, and the results are quite interesting.

Most of what people consider to be long-distance trips would be completed in less than half an hour.

So the great thing about going to space is there's no friction, so once you're out of the atmosphere, it will be as smooth as silk — no turbulence, nothing. There's no weather. There's no atmosphere. And you can get to most long distance places, like I said, in less than half an hour. And if we're building this thing to go the moon and Mars, then why not go to other places on Earth as well?

This evening, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk will give a presentation about his company’s next generation Starship system — a massive new rocket that SpaceX has been developing over the last few years to take humans to the Moon and eventually Mars. It’ll be Musk’s first presentation on the vehicle since 2019 and his fifth one overall since 2016.

Starship is by far SpaceX’s most ambitious project to date. The design calls for a giant spaceship and rocket combo that would be more powerful than the Saturn V rocket that took humans to the Moon. Starship, the passenger part of the vehicle, is meant to launch to space on top of a gargantuan booster rocket known as the Super Heavy. Starship is supposed to be capable of landing on the surface of the Moon and back on Earth, while Super Heavy is also meant to land itself back on Earth, making the entire system reusable.

HOW DO I WATCH ELON MUSK’S STARSHIP PRESENTATION?

WHAT TIME DOES THE SPACEX LIVESTREAM START?

Musk said the presentation would begin at 8PM Central time, but given his record on past performances, it’d be wise to give that start time some padding.

WHAT WILL ELON TALK ABOUT?

SpaceX and Musk have provided little detail about what exactly will be discussed during today’s update, but there are a few items that seem likely to come up. Perhaps the most pressing topic is the Federal Aviation Administration’s ongoing review of SpaceX’s proposed launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas — the site of Musk’s talk.

SpaceX is very eager to launch its Starship vehicle to orbit from the Texas location. It’s the primary place where SpaceX has been building prototypes of the rocket, and it’s the place where the company has conducted a few high-altitude test flights of the vehicle. But in order to go orbital from Texas, the company first needs the green light from the FAA. The agency is responsible for issuing licenses for rocket launches to orbit, to ensure they don’t damage uninvolved people or property.

The FAA is now considering whether to give Starship a license to launch out of Boca Chica

The FAA originally conducted a review of the Boca Chica site back in 2014, creating a full environmental impact statement, or EIS, that looked at how the facility might affect the surrounding area (which is notably part of a wildlife refuge). The assessment didn’t find any major problems, but that was back when SpaceX proposed launching its much smaller Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets out of Boca Chica. SpaceX has abandoned the idea of launching its Falcon vehicles from the facility now, and is only focused on launching Starship there. Meanwhile, the proposed launch site has significantly expanded in scope, and even includes major modifications like a natural gas plant for pretreating methane , one of the main propellants needed for Starship’s primary Raptor engines.

The FAA is now considering whether to give Starship a license to launch out of Boca Chica. As part of that decision-making process, SpaceX provided a draft assessment detailing what it plans to do with the site in the future. When that assessment was released, the FAA invited the public to give their opinions on the proposal and received a whopping 18,000 public comments. The opinions ranged from extreme enthusiasm for the project to harsh criticism, with some critics calling for the FAA to conduct another EIS based on SpaceX’s proposed updates. And it’s possible the FAA may do that. The agency can come up with one of three findings: that SpaceX’s updates will have no significant impact on the area, that SpaceX must take certain steps to mitigate its impact on the surrounding area, or that the FAA must conduct another EIS, a process that could take many months or even years as the agency interviews more people, collects more data, and does extensive research in cooperation with other federal agencies like NASA.

The FAA said it should make its decision by the end of February. The decision was initially supposed to be finalized by late December, but it’s taken both the FAA and SpaceX considerably more time than expected to respond to the sheer volume of public comments. With that February deadline coming up, the timing of Musk’s presentation this month doesn’t feel like a coincidence. Musk has a history of putting public pressure on the FAA when the regulator doesn’t make the decisions he likes with regards to his rocket launches. It’s possible the FAA might come up tonight, and if not, it will certainly be the elephant in the room.

Musk may also give updated timelines for Starship milestones, which he usually does during these presentations. Past timelines have always been incredibly aspirational and, in hindsight, unrealistic. During his last presentation in September of 2019, Musk said SpaceX was going to try to launch Starship to orbit within the next six months . Clearly, that didn’t happen. Musk’s latest prediction in November for Starhip’s orbital launch was January or February , but given the FAA’s decision timetable, March is the absolute earliest plausible timeframe — and that’s if the federal agency’s decision comes down in SpaceX’s favor. It also remains to be seen if SpaceX is actually ready for a March launch.

Timelines have always been incredibly aspirational

There’s also the topic of SpaceX’s ongoing partnership with NASA. Last year, the space agency awarded SpaceX $2.9 billion to develop Starship as a human lunar lander that can take NASA astronauts to and from the surface of the Moon in support of its Artemis program. As of now, NASA is aiming to conduct its first human landings with Starship as early as 2025, though that date is also considered fairly aspirational. Any updates on NASA and SpaceX’s working relationship would be useful.

One thing that would be nice for Musk to talk about is any updated plans for human survival on Starship . Most of the presentations in the past have revolved around the impressive specs and mechanics of the vehicle, while Musk usually brushes aside questions about life support systems, radiation shielding, and other technology related to human comfort. But Starship is primarily a passenger vehicle, and those sorts of technologies are going to become necessary as SpaceX makes its way through the development process.

However, Starship isn’t just intended for human use. SpaceX also has grand plans to use the spacecraft to launch its next generation satellites for its Starlink project, a massive mega-constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit designed to provide broadband internet services to the ground below. SpaceX filed an updated license with the Federal Communications Commission last year to launch its upgraded, larger Starlink satellites on Starship. And a recent email from Musk to the company indicated that Starship is pretty vital to Starlink’s overall success .

As for updates on the vehicles themselves, it’s hard to know what Musk could say that isn’t known already. SpaceX’s operations in Boca Chica have become fairly public, as teams of enthusiasts have started camping out around the facility, livestreaming views of daily operations there. Perhaps Musk has something new up his sleeve, but it’s pretty hard to keep secrets at the facility these days.

If nothing else, the presentation should have a fairly impressive display. SpaceX has fully stacked its latest Starship prototype on top of a Super Heavy booster for the talk’s backdrop. Though it might be hard to get the full vehicle in the shot.

Not only do these two entrepreneurs have raked in all that fortune and glory with their brilliant minds, but they also have kept viewers, listeners and tech enthusiasts on the edge of their seats with how they present each product they have created. Besides championing the endgame of businesses they are associated with, they have continued to inspire a legion of public speaking enthusiasts and presenters alike.

While Jobs had been a frontrunner in the personal computing and design revolution that took Silicon Valley by storm, Musk has been making waves with his innovation in solar power and space travel as well (cue his brainchild SpaceX). Besides great products, they have honed themselves as presenters that can leave an long-lasting impact, something that has become a significant mention in tech and public speaking blogs to this day (just like this one, coincidentally). Let’s see how Steve Jobs and Elon Musk left us inspired from their early days in the field of technology entrepreneurship.

If anyone has to observe how one can grow as a presenter, this video is a must-watch for them. One of the formative challenges and goals before Apple Inc was how to stay ahead and stay great. “ I think the question now is not “Can we turn around Apple”… I think it’s “Can we make Apple really great again ?” says Jobs as he concludes the presentation amid a resounding applause from one and all present in the hall. The presentation is a testament to what a person with a passion for challenging the status quo and making great things while taking huge strides towards success. This passion is what gave that much-needed boost to Apple and took it to great heights, all thanks to Jobs’s profound focus and drive for disruptive tech innovation.

The Elon Musk Presentation Panache

When Elon Musk had not yet become a global brand making inspirational products, he had started off as someone with passion for life-changing concepts. And though we all love to drive a swanky Tesla with speeds that thrill, Musk has been giving us not only remarkable milestones of thought but also services that have revolutionized the entire world while becoming a benchmark for the process and services that we avail of today. While every idea by the founder of SpaceX has stood the test of time, if we take a look at his initial public speeches like the one below, we will get a glimpse of a charming presenter in the making.

“The only way to get involved with the internet in ’95 that I could think of was to start a company,” says Musk as he charts what went into making Zip2, serving print media companies take their business online. He talks about how money is “just an entry in the database” and such a system warranted the need for innovation in financial services and management. And that is how Musk Inc came up with the idea of X.com (now Paypal), which is the leading online payments service provider you find at the footer of every website you interact with.

“It’s not like we drive Russian cars, fly Russian planes, or have Russian kitchen appliances. I mean when was the last time we bought something Russian that wasn’t Vodka.” This is how Musk describes the motivation behind SpaceX, i.e. to make and launch spacecrafts that will help humans survive in a Martian ecosystem. “The reason for simplicity (in decisions for SpaceX) is that it increases reliability as well as reduces your costs,” answers Musk to a question from an audience member. And while they did get the answer to the question, it was also laying the foundation of what Musk calls “advanced entrepreneuring”. And that is how he, as a presenter, goes beyond the scope of the speech itself.

Jobs vs Musk: How their presentation styles are similar

Though Steve Jobs and Elon Musk have been the frontrunners in their fields of technology, albeit about different products, one can get a decent idea that there are some interesting similarities in the way they present these products. In fact, in some presentations, even their theme and the conduct is on the same lines. We break down these points of similarity one by one.

#1 They command ethos

For those uninitiated about Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals, ethos is when the presenter convinces the audience by being authentic and credible as a way of their personality and passion. And who better to exemplify ethos than Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. When you have Steve Jobs on the stage you are taking in a wave of solid conviction by his sheer drive to inform you about his revolutionary product. Not only does Jobs tell you about the product with great interest and fluidity, he also keeps the audience convinced with his ethical approach as a business magnate and design guru.

Same goes for Musk when he is about to blow our minds with a shiny electric vehicle with autopilot features, or telling us how a space vehicle will be the medium for a sustainable existence in a colony on Mars. He talks about the presentation topic with his signature zeal.

#2 They master logos

Nothing works without an explanation. Aristotle’s second rhetorical appeal called logos, or appeal through logic, is the art of persuading someone with numbers, facts and figures. And logos is an evergreen component of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk’s presentations. With each presenter, you get data-centric groundwork for each product they launch.

If it is a mobile phone, Jobs will pique your interest with how many limited function cellphones were sold in that year and what does the iphone cost. If it is a Tesla Powerwall, Musk will give you the figures about how carbon footprint is growing (and worsening) day by day or how many batteries it takes to keep a remote warehouse running. Bottom line, both these presenters utilize the impact of logos to change the perception of their audience towards the solution by giving a startling figurative problem.

#3 They influence with pathos

The third Aristotle rhetoric of pathos is the method of persuasion through emotion. You will find this element in almost every successful big-ticket marketing campaign in the world. No surprises that pathos is the elemental spice in every Steve Jobs and Elon Musk presentation. The reason why tech consumers gravitate towards Apple and Tesla products is because in every presentation, the two always evoke the consumer’s senses and emotions with occasional and relatable humor.

Also, Jobs and Musk focus on the consumer pain points and then introduce their product or service as the better solution than the competitors too. All in all, they do not let the presentation be a drag that they have to sit through. They make the audience experience it.

But what makes them different

It is imperative to mention that though Steve Jobs and Elon Musk have evolved as public speaking and presentation stalwarts in their respective fields, the difference in their personas and presentation styles is also apparent and equally significant. Though both propel our minds to futuristic realms with the way they conduct their presentations, there are some points of stark differences in their presentation styles that make both of them unique presenters as well as champions of their own leagues. Here are those points:

#1 Body language

Body language is the most significant part of a presentation. When you are presenting on the scale of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, it is essential to see how these two make themselves stand out. Their body language, thus, has a huge role to play in that aspect. Talking of Steve Jobs, his body language is that of authority and decorum with a dash of dynamism. He uses gestures and varied stances on the stage to set minds in motion. In fact, throughout the presentation he uses the stage convincingly without seeming distracting. Wherever he moves, eyes follow. On the contrary, Elon Musk has his own style of presenting with a seemingly defensive (or flight mode) stance. Moreover, the Tesla chief also moves around less while presenting and mostly aces the product unveil by simply talking about it ( with ethos, logos and pathos ).

Another distinguishing factor between Steve Jobs and Elon Musk presentation styles is the way the two speak. In case of the Apple co-founder, you get methodical and impactful pauses used with such precision that even a layman will find themselves gasping in awe. In fact, the speech pattern used by Steve Jobs consists of enunciation at the right moment for maximum effect. This adds to the ethos part of his personality as a presenter while keeping the audience engaged about the next big thing that Apple Inc will roll out.

On the other hand, you may call Elon Musk’s speech style “unconventional”, for it is populated with frequent stutter and filler words, though that never lets his presentations be any less influential .  One can perceive the stutter and abrupt pauses as an eventuality since Musk mostly has to talk a lot about the product before bringing it out ( imagine holding out a Tesla Roadster like a phone ). But the SpaceX founder sure makes up for it with humor and witty conduct. A win-win for all!

#3 Content focus

What’s a good presentation without good content! Steve Jobs and Elon Musk prepare such outstanding presentations that the consumers cannot help but click the “buy” button. A major difference between their presentation styles is how they focus their content as per the brand image. Talking of a Steve Jobs presentation, as an observer one will find that an Apple product unveil seamlessly revolves around a catchy tagline or theme (cue the iconic “ There’s something in the Air ” for Macbook Air). In fact, the content is interspersed with live demonstration of the product and every feature that Jobs describes on the stage.

On the other end of the spectrum is Elon Musk who lets product specifications be the continuous theme of his presentation up until the big reveal of the product itself. He also keeps demonstrations videographed and uses them creatively to show what a particular Tesla model can do.

If you have looked at one of their presentations and went “ I want to ignite minds like them ”, then you are not the only one. In fact, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk have been the epitome of effective presentation skills, giving public speakers something more than just a reason to excel. They give the listener a reason to believe (and then buy, of course). Working on these lines, one can learn a lot from them as a presenter. Here are some valuable tips on presentation that one can learn from them.

#1 Believe in yourself

We have all faced that “ Sell me this pen ” question at one point in life or the other. And how do you answer that question? By believing in the product and, most importantly, yourself. The power of conviction comes from that inner confidence, a quality that both Steve Jobs and Elon Musk achieve with their entrepreneurial drive to change the world.

#2 Practice makes perfect

Presenting on the scale of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk can be a daunting task. The uninitiated can get jitters just thinking of it. So what is the solution? Practice. Practice. And more practice. The presentations that we see become exceptional because Jobs and Musk make it a point to know their product inside out. They talk about, demonstrate and experiment with each product with authority. Practice this skill and you will emerge stronger.

#3 Do not make the presentation a drag

While we do know that something extensive and technical can lead to boredom among the audience, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk always keep space and time for spontaneous (and exceptionally witty) humor. This quality comes from knowing your audience well. So incorporate that into your presentation .

#4 Be authentic

As we may find while observing Elon Musk presenting a product, the occasional stutter or filler words could seem distracting. But the billionaire tech genius is an example of how to not let that be a deterrent. In fact, this adds to his authenticity on the stage. Not that Jobs isn’t equally authentic. He also is an inspiration to many as he takes the right pauses and makes the right choices while saying the right things. Bottom line, as a presenter, your authenticity makes you more believable and relatable, and hence, impactful and memorable.   

#5 Use the element of surprise

To emulate the presentation panache of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, you have to master a key ingredient — the element of surprise. Notice how Jobs and Musk save the price of a product for the last near the end of a presentation. The mantra is to illustrate how the product is able to accomplish so many things and spark the audience’s intrigue. And then, when the interest reaches its crescendo, they strike the proverbial chord. Gasp goes the audience as they bring forth how these products can be the best purchase of their lives. The takeaway is to use such points of interest of the audience to blow their minds away. And that’s how you do a presentation that rocks!
