Der Aufbau eines Essays auf Englisch unterscheidet sich kaum von einem Essay auf Deutsch . Ebenso wie im Deutschen gliedert sich ein englischer Essay in Einleitung ( introduction ), Hauptteil ( body ) und Schluss ( conclusion ).

Gliederung Essay Englisch:

• Introduction

In der Essay Einleitung führst du in das Thema des Essays ein.

Dazu kannst deine persönlichen oder allgemeine Erfahrungen im Umgang mit diesem Thema wiedergeben. Es bietet sich an, konträre Meinungen als Position A und Position B einander gegenüberzustellen. So machst du bereits in der Einleitung klar, dass es verschiedene Ansichten gibt, über die diskutiert werden kann und sollte.

In der Introduction ist es wichtig, deinen Standpunkt durch das Ausformulieren einer These zu verdeutlichen. Diese These (engl. thesis statement ) begründest du im Hauptteil (engl. body ) deines Essays. Nimm dir genügend Zeit, um eine aussagekräftige These zu finden, da dein weiterer Essay auf dieser These aufbaut.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

Im Hauptteil deines Essays findet die eigentliche Diskussion statt.

Wenn du einen argumentativen Essay schreibst, gibst du Pro- und Kontra-Argumente zu der These wieder, die du in der Einleitung aufgestellt hast.

Jedes Argument beginnst du mit einem neuen Absatz. Zwischenüberschriften gibt es in einem Essay auf Englisch nicht, du solltest jedoch sogenannte topic sentences verwenden.

Topic sentences stehen zum Beginn von jedem Absatz und stellen heraus, worum es in diesem Absatz deines Essays inhaltlich geht.

Aufbau Topic Sentence:

• Das Thema des Absatzes
• Der zentrale Punkt des Absatzes

Es ist wichtig, dich im Hauptteil deines Bodys immer wieder auf die in der Einleitung formulierte These zu beziehen. So erreichst du, dass die Lesenden eine klare gedankliche Struktur in deinem Essay erkennen können.

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include warning notes where citations are missing; the site’s own guidelines for research make clear that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always “read the references and check whether they really do support what the article says” (“Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,” 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.

Im Schlussteil ( conclusion ) fasst du deine Argumentation zusammen und ziehst ein Fazit. Neue Argumente sollten im Schlussteil nicht genannt werden.

Es ist möglich, dass deine anfängliche These aus der Einleitung sich durch das Essayschreiben leicht verändert hat. In diesem Fall kannst du deine These im Schlussteil reformulieren.

Außerdem kannst du am Schluss deines Essays offen gebliebene Fragen benennen und Lösungen anbieten.

All you need is to brush up your vocabulary and follow a few simple strategies, and you’ll be well on your way to writing your first masterpiece.

This post will provide you with a list of useful German words and phrases to include in your next essay, plus the different types of German essays, a few writing strategies and even a sample essay at the end.

Let’s start with the words and phrases themselves. As you’ll see, they’re grouped according to how and when you’ll use them. Let’s start off with some that will help you explain your arguments.

1. Weil (Because)

Daniel muss lernen, weil er morgen einen Test hat.

(Daniel has to study because he has a test tomorrow.)

2. Da (Because)

Daniel muss lernen, da er morgen einen Test hat.

3. Denn (Because)

Daniel muss lernen, denn er hat morgen einen Test.

(Daniel has to study because tomorrow he has a test.)

A quick note: Weil, da and denn are generally interchangeable. Keep in mind though that denn requires a different word order.

4. Damit (In order to; So that)

Lisa lernt viel, damit sie den Test besteht.

(Lisa is studying a lot in order to pass the test.)

5. Um (To; In order to)

Lisa lernt viel, um den Test zu bestehen.

24. Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass…  (In summary, it can be said that…)

Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass Sprachen beim Reisen sehr hilfreich sein können.

(In summary, it can be said that languages can be very helpful when traveling.)

Ok, let’s get a little deeper into the actual essays themselves. How do they compare to the essays that you’re probably used to writing?

• They have a similar structure to English essays. Remember how English essays have a beginning, middle and end? Good news: German essays contain those same parts. When you’re writing a German essay, you’ll want to include an opening paragraph with your argument, three supporting paragraphs that further your argument and a conclusion. German and English are often surprisingly similar, and essay structure is no exception.
• German essays are more to the point. Although German essays and English essays are structured similarly, German essays—just like German speakers—tend to be more blunt and to the point. You won’t need to dance around your conclusions or obfuscate in German: just say what you mean.
• German punctuation is different. Germans have different rules for punctuation than English speakers. For example, Germans introduce a direct quote with a colon instead of a comma. They use quotes instead of italics for the names of books, movies and newspapers. And they set off relative clauses beginning with dass (that) with a comma, unlike in American English. Understanding these differences between English and German punctuation will ensure you don’t give yourself away as a non-native speaker through punctuation marks alone!

Before you get started on your essay, make sure you know what type of essay you’re going to write. If it’s a school essay, be sure to read and understand the instructions.

Here are a few notes about the most common kinds of essays in German.

• An Erzählung  is a narrative essay that tells a story. Your teacher might give you some keywords or pictures and ask you to create a story around it. An Erlebniserzählung (“experience story”) is about a personal experience and can be written in the first person.
• An Erörterung is an argumentative essay, a writing piece meant to persuade someone to think the way you do. This writing genre requires you to investigate your topic well and provide evidence to prove your point.
• In a Nacherzählung you summarize and recount a book, a film or an article you have read, from an objective perspective. Depending on the essay instructions, you might be asked for your personal opinion in the conclusion.

Are you ready to start writing? Use these four strategies to wow your teachers and write the perfect German essay.

You should look at any new activity as an opportunity to learn and master new vocabulary . Instead of using the same words that you use in your everyday German speech, use this essay as an opportunity to introduce new words into your German lexicon.

Besides, incorporating academic words that help you craft and shape your argument can make your essay sound more professional and polished. So before you start writing, write down a list of the German words you’d like to incorporate in your essay.

As with everything else, you should look at the research portion of the essay-writing process as an opportunity to learn more about Germany—this time, about German culture, history , politics or travel .

Chances are if you’re writing your essay for a language-learning class, you’ll be assigned a topic pertaining to one of these aspects of German life, so use this as a chance to learn more about Deutschland.

For example, Deutsche Welle offers information and resources about German history. Other newspapers such as Berliner Zeitung and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung offer another perspective on politics and daily life in Germany.

There’s nothing clunkier than an essay that doesn’t flow naturally from one point to the next. Besides, thinking about how your arguments and points interact with each other will help you organize your essay and make sure you get your point across. (Do they support each other? Counter each other? How exactly do they function to further your argument?)

Examples of transition words:

• Vorher (prior)
• zur gleichen Zeit (at the same time)
• dann (then)
• trotzdem (nevertheless)
• noch (still)

Writing an essay in English and then translating it into German often results in stilted, poorly formed sentences and unnatural constructions.

For example, remember that German word order is different from English. If you write “He didn’t read the book,” a one-to-one literal translation would be Er hat gelesen nicht das Buch . But the correct translation is actually  Er hat nicht das Buch gelesen. In this example, translating word for word leads to errors.

There’s another, less tangible reason why it’s not a good idea to write in English and translate to German. Sure, you could just remember that you need to change the word order when translating into German. But isn’t it better to adapt your brain so that German word order seems fluid and natural?

Learning to think and write off-the-cuff in German is an essential step towards fluency, and devising sentences in German, instead of sentences in translation, will help you learn to do that.

One good way to learn to think in a language is to hear it spoken in natural contexts. You can hear German spoken naturally in German language TV shows , movies and YouTube videos .

Listening to German spoken at a natural speed and native accent will help get you thinking in the language in real time. This will help get you to the point where you can come up with your own sentences in German, rather than thinking in English sentences first and then translating them in your head before you speak or write. That will greatly improve your speed and fluency when writing in German.

So, simply start writing the essay in German. Look up any words you’re not sure of and double-check any grammatical constructions that you’re not familiar with. After you finish writing, ask a German-speaking friend to look over the essay to make sure it sounds natural.

Now that we’ve explored strategies and phrases for writing top-notch German essays, let’s take a look at an example.

World War I doesn’t get as much coverage in the States as World War II (where it was more directly involved). But for Europe, World War I was a devastating example of the dangers of modern technological warfare and the horrors of violence.

Let’s take a look at an example opening paragraph and outline of an essay about the effect of World War I on German government and life.

Opening paragraph:

Der Erste Weltkrieg war ein totaler Krieg, der Deutschland völlig veränderte. Dieser Krieg hat 1914 angefangen, und 1918, als der Krieg zu Ende kam, waren die deutsche Gesellschaft, Regierung und Kultur nicht mehr erkennbar. Am Anfang hat der Erste Weltkrieg altväterliche Ideen und Systeme verstärkt. Am Ende hat dieser Krieg dagegen diese altväterlichen Dinge zerstört.

(The First World War was a total war that completely changed Germany. This war began in 1914 and in 1918, when the war came to an end, German society, government and culture were no longer recognizable. At the beginning, the First World War strengthened old-fashioned ideas and systems. However, by the end, this war destroyed these old-fashioned things.)

Notice that this opening paragraph is not very different at all from the first paragraph of an English essay. You can use the same structure you’ve always used to write your German essay, leaving you free to focus on grammar and vocabulary.

Notice also the use of phrases such as Am Anfang (at the beginning) and Dagegen (however). Words like these can help you make a point and counterpoint in your opening paragraph (or anywhere in your essay, for that matter).

I. Am Anfang (at the beginning):

– Dieser Krieg hat Deutschland vereint . (This war united Germany.) – Menschen hatten ein patriotisches Gefühl. (People had a patriotic feeling.) – Menschen dachten, dass der Krieg bald zu Ende kommen würde. (People thought that the war would soon come to an end.)

Notice that these points employ words like dachten (thought). Written German often relies on Präteritum , a form of the past tense that’s rarely used in spoken Deutsch. It’s often called “literary past tense” for this reason. Check out this guide to the Präteritum to include this tense in your essay.

II. Andrerseits (on the other hand):

– Bald gab es kein Essen mehr . (Soon there was no more food.) – Menschen wurden krank und desillusioniert . (People became sick and disillusioned.) – Es gab Proteste und Unruhen. (There was protest and unrest.)

Like in an English essay, your second and third paragraphs can include supporting points or counterpoints that contribute to the overall theme of your piece. The word Andrerseits (on the other hand) is an ideal transition word to show that you’re moving into another section of your essay.

Also notice that this essay will rely on vocabulary words that the average language learner might not have come across in his or her learning. After all, who learns the words for “disillusioned” and “unrest” in their intermediate German class? But don’t be daunted by the fact that your essay might include eclectic vocabulary. Instead, use this as an opportunity for more learning.

III. zum Schluss (in conclusion):

– Der Kaiser hat abgedankt . (The Emperor abdicated.) – Eine Republik wurde geboren. (A Republic was born.) – Die alten Werte waren weg. (The old values were gone.)

Once again, abgedankt (abdicated) is an example of the literary past tense (and an example of a word that you probably haven’t come across in your previous German studies!)

IV. Schließlich (finally)

– Der Erste Weltkrieg hat Deutschland verändert . (The First World War completely changed Germany.)

Again, like in an English essay, you should use this paragraph to summarize your main point.

Ein Argument stellt in der Regel einen Paragraph beim Schreiben auf Englisch dar. Argumente und somit Paragraphs bestehen immer aus:

Du kannst die einzelnen Absätze auch mit Unterüberschriften betiteln, falls Dein Essay (englisch für "Aufsatz") mehrere Seiten einnimmt. Achte beim Schreiben der einzelnen Paragraphs bzw. Argumente aber auch immer darauf, dass sie sinnvoll aufeinander aufbauen.

Deine Argumente sortierst Du im Hauptteil vom Schwächsten zum Stärksten. Wenn Dein Hauptteil mit dem stärksten Argument schließt, kannst Du die Lesenden gegen Ende von Deinem Standpunkt zu überzeugen.

Der hier gezeigte Hauptteil beinhaltet der Übersicht wegen nur ein Argument. Bei einem vollständigen Essay würdest Du aber mehrere Argumente aufzeigen und ausführen.

The most important aspect to consider in this matter is the overall happiness and well-being of everyone involved.

It has been proven that people who own a dog live longer. This is because they tend to be more active than the average person because their dog encourages them to go outside every day. The presence of a dog lowers the stress levels of those surrounding due to the extra exercise and its general loving nature. A study of Washington State University showed that just ten minutes of petting a dog dramatically lowers cortisol – a hormone that indicates stress.

I remember my mother telling me about the first dog she ever got. She was a university student who had recently split up with her long term partner and had a difficult time staying on top of uni work as well as her personal life. She decided to get a dog: The dog would need a routine that she needed to stick to as well. Getting a dog made her think about other things than university, thus reducing her stress. I can personally attest to the happiness a dog adds to everyone's lives because even seeing a dog out on the street lifts my mood instantly.

Essay Englisch – Schluss

Am Ende schreibst Du den "Schluss" ( conclusion) , der Dein Englisch-Essay zusammenfasst . Außerdem erklärst Du in ein paar Sätzen Dein Fazit. Du formulierst also Deine These aus der Einleitung erneut – entweder wiederholst Du diese bestätigte These oder Du formulierst sie neu, wenn Du zu einem anderen Ergebnis gekommen bist.

Essay Englisch Beispieltext – Schluss

Was ist ein Essay?

Wie schreibe ich einen essay – aufbau, sprache und stil, eine extraportion tipps und tricks, welche essay-arten gibt es, essay schreiben in englisch .

Ein Essay ist eine  Aufsatzart , die sich mit einem aktuellen Problem aus dem Alltag, der Literatur oder der Wissenschaft beschäftigt. Das können alle möglichen Themen sein, zum Beispiel der Klimawandel oder die Lebensqualität in Städten.

In einem Essay äußerst du deine eigenen Gedanken zu so einem Thema. Dabei beziehst du dich nicht auf irgendeine Theorie, wie in einer Analyse, sondern stellst deinen persönlichen Standpunkt argumentativ  dar. Das bedeutet, dass du in deinem Essay eigene Argumente und Beispiele verwendest, die deine Meinung unterstützen. Du kannst dir das Ganze wie ein Gedankenspiel vorstellen, in dem du deine Ideen zu einem Thema erläuterst. 

Denke daran: Das Ziel deines Essays ist es, andere zum Nachdenken anzuregen.

Wie fast jede Aufsatzform besteht der Essay aus drei grundlegenden Teilen : Einleitung, Hauptteil und Schluss. Diese einfache Struktur hilft dir nicht nur beim Schreiben, sondern erleichtert auch das Lesen und Verstehen deines Textes.

Essay schreiben – Einleitung

In der Einleitung führst du den Leser möglichst kurz in das Thema ein und stellst deine zentrale These – deinen Leitgedanken   – vor. Hier beantwortest du folgende Fragen:

• Warum ist das Thema wichtig?
• Welche Standpunkte gibt es dazu?
• Welche Meinung vertrittst du selbst?

Die Einleitung soll vor allem Interesse wecken und zum Weiterlesen anregen. Um andere für dein Thema zu begeistern, verzichtest du am besten auf einen klassischen Einleitungssatz. Wähle stattdessen einen möglichst kreativen Einstieg .

Da es in einem Essay um deinen eigenen Standpunkt geht, darfst du auch deine Einleitung  subjektiv , also persönlich gestalten. Verwende zum Beispiel ein anschauliches Zitat, einen spannenden Fakt oder beschreibe ein persönliches Erlebnis. So kannst du andere leicht auf ein Thema aufmerksam machen.

Zum Beispiel so: 

• Meine Oma war noch ein Kind, als der Zweite Weltkrieg endete. In dieser Zeit musste sie viel Angst und Leid ertragen. Trotzdem sagt sie häufig, dass ihre Kindheit in vielen Dingen leichter war als meine heute. Zuerst erschien mir das verrückt. Doch betrachtet man … , dann …
• Laut einer aktuellen Schätzung der Internationalen Arbeitsorganisation ILO werden weltweit 152 Millionen Kinder als Kinderarbeiter ausgebeutet. Aus diesem Grund …

Geheimtipp: Schreibe deine Einleitung zum Schluss ! Häufig ist es leichter, die Einleitung erst zu schreiben, wenn Hauptteil und Schluss schon fertig sind. Beim Schreiben kann sich deine These nämlich noch verändern. Erst wenn du sicher bist, was deine Argumente aussagen sollen, kannst du deine These klar formulieren . 

Essay schreiben – Hauptteil

Der Hauptteil ist der umfangreichste und inhaltlich wichtigste Teil deines Essays. Hier arbeitest du die zentralen Argumente deiner These heraus.

Tipp: Mache eine Mindmap, um deine Gedanken zum Thema zu sortieren und die wichtigsten Argumente zu finden.

Berücksichtige auch mögliche Gegenargumente und widerlege diese nachvollziehbar. Überlege dir also, was für und was gegen  deine Meinung spricht. 

Achte darauf, dass jedes deiner Argumente in einem eigenen Absatz steht. Wenn sich deine Argumentation aus drei Hauptargumenten zusammensetzt, muss sich das auch an deinem Aufbau zeigen. Gliedere dafür deinen Hauptteil in drei Absätze. In jedem Absatz benennst du nicht nur das jeweilige Argument , sondern begründest es mit einem Beispiel .

Wie in der Einleitung darf ein persönlicher Bezug zu deinen Argumenten bestehen. Deine Beispiele können sich auf Statistiken oder Fakten beziehen, aber auch auf deine eigenen Erfahrungen.

Tipp: Gestalte die Reihenfolge deiner Argumente sinnvoll und passend zu deiner These. Fertige hierfür am besten gleich zu Anfang eine Gliederung an, an der du dich beim Schreiben immer wieder orientieren kannst. 

Der Übergang zwischen einzelnen Absätzen oder innerhalb eines Absatzes von Argument zu Beispiel gelingt dir besonders gut mit diesen Formulierungen: 

• Im Folgenden …; Zunächst einmal …
• Im Anschluss …; Darauf aufbauend …
• Darüber hinaus …; Zudem …; Hinzu kommt, dass …; Weiterhin …
• Ein Beispiel dafür ist …; Das lässt sich damit belegen/daran erkennen, dass …
• Allerdings …; Man sollte bedenken/berücksichtigen, dass …; Zwar … aber …; Einerseits … andererseits …

Essay schreiben – Schluss

Am Schluss deines Essays steht dein Fazit , das sich aus deiner Argumentation im Hauptteil ergibt. Das Fazit macht noch einmal deine persönliche Haltung zum Thema und zu deiner These deutlich.

Verzichte darauf, die wichtigsten Punkte deiner Argumentation im Schlussteil nochmals zusammenzufassen. Denn so besteht die Gefahr, dass du dich wiederholst und den Leser langweilst. Nutze stattdessen deine Erkenntnisse aus dem Hauptteil, um einen Lösungsvorschlag anzubieten oder eine Verbindung zu vergleichbaren Themen herzustellen.

Zum Beispiel so:

• All das zeigt, wie wichtig eine gesunde Ernährung für Kinder ist. Aus diesem Grund sollte man überlegen, wie Kinder und Jugendliche stärker für das Thema begeistert werden können. Lässt sich gesunde Ernährung vielleicht als Teil des Lehrplans in Schulen oder in Kindergärten anbieten?

Dein Fazit kannst du besonders gut kennzeichnen, indem du schlussfolgernde Formulierungen verwendest: 

• Daraus ergibt sich, dass … ; Aus diesem Grund/diesen Gründen … ; Daher …
• Insgesamt zeigt sich … ; Alles in allem zeigt sich, dass …

Der Essay hebt sich in vielen Dingen von einer sachlichen oder theoretischen Arbeit ab. Daher hast du beim Schreiben einige kreative Freiheiten . 

Greife zum Beispiel auf stilistische Mittel zurück, um deinen Text besonders anschaulich und fesselnd zu gestalten: 

• Euphemismen :   Fehltritt  statt  Straftat ,  entschlafen  statt  sterben 
• rhetorische Fragen :   Ist das noch normal? Wie lange lässt sich das noch hinnehmen?
• Wortspiele:  wer rastet, der rostet; wer nie vom Weg abkommt, bleibt auf der Strecke
• Metaphern :   der Strom des Lebens; die Flamme der Liebe 
• Hyperbeln : das haben wir doch schon hundertmal gehört; schlechte Ideen gibt es wie Sand am Meer
• Parenthesen :   damit kann sich die Politik – zum Glück! – nicht mehr herausreden

Tipp:   Setze solche Mittel sparsam ein. Nur so wirken sie besonders überzeugend. Sie sollen den Lesefluss unterstützen und nicht stören .

Achte darauf, dass du umgangssprachliche Formulierungen ( Hoppla ; macht nix ; Kapiert? ) vermeidest und deine Stilmittel passend und verständlich sind.

Tipps fürs Studium:  

• Wenn du in der Uni selbst wählen darfst: Entscheide dich für ein Thema, dass dich interessiert und das Streitpunkte bietet. Beispiele: Klimawandel, Frauen in „Männerberufen“, Corona-Schutzmaßnahmen
• Erstelle einen Zeitplan und notiere, in welchem Zeitraum du welchen Teil deines Essays bearbeiten möchtest. Halte dich, so gut es geht, daran.

Tipps für alle: 

• Verzichte auf Unterüberschriften. Der Titel deines Essays ist die einzige Überschrift. Einleitung, Hauptteil und Schluss werden durch Absätze und Verknüpfungswörter gekennzeichnet. 
• Ein Essay ist in der Regel 5-15 Seiten lang. 
• Einleitung und Schluss machen etwa 10 Prozent des gesamten Aufsatzes aus. Wenn du insgesamt fünf Seiten schreibst, umfassen Einleitung und Schluss jeweils eine halbe Seite. 

Nicht vergessen:

• Korrekturlesen ist ein Muss! Überprüfe die sprachliche Richtigkeit deines Essays und die Schlüssigkeit deiner Argumente. Dabei hilft dir auch unsere Übersicht über die verschiedenen Argumenttypen .

How to Structure an Essay | Tips & Templates

The basic structure of an essay always consists of an introduction , a body , and a conclusion . But for many students, the most difficult part of structuring an essay is deciding how to organize information within the body.

There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

Order of information

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

• Advantages: Flexibility, accessibility
• Disadvantages: Discomfort, challenges for those with poor internet or tech literacy

• Disadvantages: Difficulty of identifying struggling students and aiding them unobtrusively, lack of personal interaction among students
• Advantages: More accessible to those with low tech literacy, equality of all sharing one learning environment
• Disadvantages: Students must live close enough to attend, commutes may vary, classrooms not always accessible for disabled students
• Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
• Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

• This is a long-term solution but could be highly effective
• It would require significant organization and investment, but would equip people to judge news sources more effectively
• Rather than trying to contain the spread of fake news, we must teach the next generation not to fall for it

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

… Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarized in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

• The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
• The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

How the internet—and Stephen Colbert—hounded Kate Middleton into revealing her diagnosis

For many years, the most-complained-about cover of the British satirical magazine Private Eye was the one it published in the week after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. At the time, many people in Britain were loudly revolted by the tabloid newspapers that had hounded Diana after her divorce from Charles, and by the paparazzi whose quest for profitable pictures of the princess ended in an underpass in Paris.

Under the headline “Media to Blame,” the Eye cover carried a photograph of a crowd outside Buckingham Palace, with three speech bubbles. The first was: “The papers are a disgrace.” The next two said: “Yeah, I couldn’t get one anywhere” and “Borrow mine, it’s got a picture of the car.” People were furious. Sacks of angry, defensive mail arrived for days afterward, and several outlets withdrew the magazine from sale. (I am an Eye contributor, and these events have passed into office legend.) But with the benefit of hindsight, the implication was accurate: Intruding on the private lives of the royals is close to a British tradition. We Britons might have the occasional fit of remorse, but that doesn’t stop us. And now, because of the internet, everyone else can join in too.

That cover instantly sprang to mind when, earlier today, the current Princess of Wales announced that she has cancer. In a video recorded on Wednesday in Windsor, the former Kate Middleton outlined her diagnosis in order to put an end to weeks of speculation, largely incubated online but amplified and echoed by mainstream media outlets, about the state of her health and marriage.

Kate has effectively been bullied into this statement, because the alternative—a wildfire of gossip and conspiracy theories—was worse. So please, let’s not immediately switch into maudlin recriminations about how this happened. It happened because people felt they had the right to know Kate’s private medical information. The culprits may include three staff members at the London hospital that treated her, who have been accused of accessing her medical records, perhaps driven by the same curiosity that has lit up my WhatsApp inbox for weeks. Everyone hates the tabloid papers, until they become them.

In her statement, Kate said that after her abdominal surgery earlier in the year, which the press was told at the time was “planned”—a word designed to minimize its seriousness—later tests revealed an unspecified cancer. She is now undergoing “preventative chemotherapy,” but has not revealed the progression of the disease, or her exact prognosis. “I am well,” she said, promising that she is getting stronger every day. “I hope you will understand that as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.”

This news will surely make many people feel bad. The massive online guessing game about the reasons for Kate’s invisibility seems far less fun now. Stephen Colbert’s “spilling the tea” monologue , which declared open season on the princess’s marriage, should probably be quietly interred somewhere. The sad simplicity of today’s statement, filmed on a bench with Kate in casual jeans and a striped sweater, certainly gave me pause. She mentioned the difficulty of having to “process” the news, as well as explaining her condition to her three young children in terms they could understand. The reference to the importance of “having William by my side” was pointed, given how much of the speculation has gleefully dwelt on the possibility that she was leaving him or vice versa.

However, the statement also reveals that the online commentators who suggested that the royal household was keeping something from the public weren’t entirely wrong. Kate’s condition was described as noncancerous when her break from public life was announced in late January . The updated diagnosis appears to have been delivered in February, around the time her husband, Prince William, abruptly pulled out of speaking at a memorial service for the former king of Greece. Today’s statement represents a failure of Kensington Palace to control the narrative: first, by publishing a photograph of Kate and her children that was so obviously edited that photo agencies retracted it, and second, by giving its implicit permission for the publication of a grainy video of the couple shopping in Windsor over the weekend. Neither of those decisions quenched the inferno raging online—in fact, they fed it.

Some will say that Kate has finally done what she should have done much earlier: directly address the rumors in an official video, rather than drip-feed images that raised more questions than they answered. King Charles III has taken a different approach to his own (also unspecified) cancer, allowing footage to be filmed of him working from home. But then again, Kate has cancer at 42, is having chemo, and has three young children. Do you really have it in you to grade her media strategy and find it wanting?

Ironically, Britain’s tabloid papers have shown remarkable restraint; as I wrote earlier this month , they declined to publish the first paparazzi pictures of Kate taken after her withdrawal from public life. They have weighted their decisions toward respect and dignity—more so than the Meghan stans, royal tea-spillers, and KateGate theorists, who have generated such an unstoppable wave of interest in this story that its final destination was a woman with cancer being forced to reveal her diagnosis. If you ever wanted proof that the “mainstream media” are less powerful than ever before, this video of Kate Middleton sitting on a bench is it.
