The Master's degree programme in Speech and Language Processing is designed as a two-year programme (four semesters) with a workload of 120 ECTS points. There are two tracks within the programme: Human Language Processing (HLP) and Machine Language Processing (MLP). Core foundational and methodological courses are shared across the tracks, but students are expected to emphasise either the HLP or the MLP track by choosing a majority of courses within that track. In both tracks, the courses focus on both theory and practice. Acquiring competence in statistical methods and programming is required.

The Master's programme in Speech and Language Processing consists of two closely intertwined tracks: language processing as done by humans and language processing as programmable into computers. A foundational module introduces students to issues and methodology in both human and computational language processing. Students are then expected to specialise in one of the two tracks, but the programme is simultaneously designed to be flexible so that students can pursue the courses that most closely match their interests. Module Seven allows students to pursue courses according to their interests in neighbouring areas such as computer science and psychology.

The Master’s programme contains a strong methodological component, enabling graduates to work either in industry or academia and to pursue cutting edge experimental and/or computational research in language processing. As such, it is mandatory to learn statistical methods and to acquire knowledge of a programming language as part of the study programme. Courses on statistical methods are available in Module Two and courses on programming languages in Modules Two, Four, or Seven. We encourage students to pursue internships outside the university in industry or academia but also provide internship possibilities within the university (Module Six).

Overall, the study programme consists of eight modules and is designed so that it can be studied in English.

The core study area comprises Modules One through Six and Eight; the neighbouring area is covered by Module Seven.

Module One: Core Areas of Linguistics, 18 credit points (cr) Module Two: Methods, 12 cr Module Three: Foundations, 18 cr Module Four: Machine Language Processing (MLP), 18/9 cr, depending on focus (machine or human language processing) Module Five: Human Language Processing (HLP), 18/9 cr, depending on focus (machine or human language processing) Module Six: Practical/Experimental Applications and Research, 6 cr Module Seven: Neighbouring Areas, 18 cr Module Eight: Master's thesis and oral exam, 21 cr

Students in the final year of their Bachelor's degree, who have not yet graduated, are welcome to apply. In exceptional cases applicants may be admitted who have completed their qualifying degree (grade "good" 2.5 or better) in another, comparable study programme with academic achievements that make successful participation in the Master's programme in Speech and Language Processing likely.
  • Applicants must provide documentation of advanced English language skills (see below).

usSan Diego State University’s master’s degree program in speech-language pathology is No. 12 in the nation and the College of Education is No. 48, according to new rankings of graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report.

Released Tuesday , both numbers improve upon the most recent previous rankings for those programs. The speech-language pathology program climbed up from its last highest ranking in 2020 at No. 25, and the ranking for the College of Education is one slot higher than the program’s best placement set last year.

Ignatius Nip , director of the SDSU School of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences said the M.A. program stands out in several ways.

“We have emphasized training all speech-language pathologists (SLPs) on how to assess and treat speech, language, and communication disorders in people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” Nip said.

“We also have strong relationships and collaborations with the greater San Diego community which provides our students with ample opportunities to gain clinical experience in a wide range of settings,” he added.

The program’s partnerships include local public schools, acute care hospitals, medical outpatient facilities and private practice.

U.S. News publishes rankings in some categories of college education annually; others are issued on an irregular basis.

The No. 48 position for the College of Education is its highest ever from U.S. News.

"The steady ascent of our college in recent years is very gratifying, but it comes as no surprise," said Y. Barry Chung , dean of the College of Education. “Our reputation for teaching, research and community impact has been well known here in the San Diego region for decades. I'm delighted the secret now seems to be out among our national peers, as well."

The part-time MBA program in the Fowler College of Business is No. 53, matching the ranking it received in 2021 and 15 steps higher than last year.

Among other SDSU graduate school rankings of note for 2024:

The School of Public Health is No. 29 in the nation, audiology is No. 30 and physical therapy is No. 53.

The nursing program, in the College of Health and Human Services is listed at No. 55, its highest ranking in at least five years. The social work program is No. 51.

“Over the last three years, the School of Nursing has made concerted efforts to address the national nursing shortage by expanding our pre-licensure, ADN to BSN, and graduate programs to meet the nursing workforce needs of San Diego and Imperial Counties,” said Karen Macauley , professor and director of the school.

The school “has been fortunate to secure significant state and federal funding to conduct nursing research and develop pipelines into our Bachelor's and Graduate Nursing programs,” she said.

Macauley added: “We have committed to inspire compassionate, ethical and visionary nurse leaders and achieve excellence and innovation in nursing education, practice, and research while advancing the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.”

Jeff Ristine, Peggy Pico and Michael Klitzing contributed to this article. This article will be updated to include rankings for the SDSU/University of California San Diego joint doctoral program in clinical psychology upon publication by U.S. News, which were delayed.

ComArtSci Speech-Language Pathologist Earns William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award

speech language pathology masters germany

J. Scott Yaruss, Ph.D. is being recognized as the 2024 recipient of the William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award for his work surrounding understanding, addressing, and supporting individuals who stutter. The William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award, one of the university’s highest accolades, is bestowed on up to 10 nominees each year for “outstanding total service to the University.”  Nominees usually have at least five years of service at MSU.

Yaruss is a professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, a practicing speech-language pathologist, and a board-certified specialist in stuttering, cluttering, and fluency. He joined the Michigan State University faculty in 2017, with the overarching goal of helping speech-language pathologists improve their ability to provide meaningful and lasting support for people who live with stuttering.

“I started my studies in speech language pathology in 1989,” Yaruss said. “My undergraduate was in linguistics and in psychology, and I wanted to find a field where I could study language, because I love language and people, because I love to study the psychology of people.”

Yaruss, who is also director of the Spartan Stuttering Laboratory within the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, says an encounter with a speech language pathologist who worked with children turned into a summer volunteer stint in her center at UC-Berkeley.  Later, as a graduate student at Syracuse University , Yaruss began to do serious lab research on stuttering.

He had found a discipline that combined his two undergraduate passions.

And he loved it.

“So, it was a lot of luck,” Yaruss said.  “I often tell people if my kids put as little thought into their futures as I did, we’d be having a serious conversation.”

Over his career, Yaruss has watched his field shift focus from the physical speech-related aspects of stuttering to its broader life consequences.

“The focus of my research for 30 years now has been on documenting that adverse impact; what it is that people who stutter live with, what those negative consequences are, and then alleviating that adverse impact,” said Yaruss.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicative Disorders (NIDCD) estimates that stuttering affects about 3 million people in the U.S. There’s no cure for stuttering, Yaruss notes.  Instead, he helps people learn to communicate freely and authentically, without being held back by their speaking difference.

“But to do that, they've got to understand more about what they're experiencing,” said Yaruss.  “Just as there’s the external stigma, there's the internal stigma. And where we start in therapy is diminishing that internal stigma…helping people learn that what they say is valuable, even if it's said with a stutter.”

Yaruss is currently working with grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).  The NSF project focuses on a prototype app called HeardAI that enables phones and other voice recognition software to recognize stuttered speech.

Yaruss will be formally presented with the William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award on May 1.  He calls the honor a validation of his life’s work.

“The thing that overwhelms me is there's a lot of great faculty here,” Yaruss says.  “Every person in my department is outstanding.  To receive recognition from this group in particular, I feel honored and grateful.”

Communication Sciences and Disorders

Us news & world report ranks iowa audiology, speech-language pathology among the top in the nation.

Two programs in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are once again recognized among the best in their field according to the U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2024 .

Iowa’s audiology program is again ranked second best in the nation and remains the top public institution training audiologists. Speech-Language Pathology climbed in the rankings to fifth and is now the third-ranked public institution.

New rankings of nation-wide  Audiology and  Speech-Language Pathology graduate programs is available on the USNWR website.

“These rankings recognize the daily efforts of our remarkable faculty and staff, who consistently strive to provide exceptional education to our students,”   said Eric Hunter , DEO and Harriet B. and Harold S. Brady Chair in Liberal Arts and Sciences. “We are focused on training outstanding audiologists and speech-language pathologists.”

“Together, we are shaping the future of audiology and speech-language pathology, and we will continue to lead the way in delivering excellence,” Hunter added.

Hunter, who has been at Iowa since August 2023 and is a nationally recognized expert in the field, was the first hire under the University of Iowa's Transformational Faculty Hiring Program , which is aimed at attracting world-class faculty to strategic programs and areas of excellence. He received a PhD from Iowa’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders program in 2001.

Iowa has long been a leader in communication sciences and disorders dating back to 1897, when the university, led by Carl Seashore’s pioneering work, developed speech pathology as a discipline of study.

“CLAS is proud of our faculty and staff who continue to guide this storied program into the future,” said Dean Sara Sanders. “Because of their tremendous talent and dedication to their research and teaching, CSD continues to be at the forefront of audiology and speech-language pathology.”

The university, college, and department continue to lead, ensuring students access to unparalleled opportunities. Construction has started on a new $249 million building that will provide a state-of-the-art learning space for Iowa students studying in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Department of Health and Human Physiology, and the Carver College of Medicine’s Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.

Substantial completion of the building is anticipated in 2025.
