Here is a list of some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the admissions process. If your question is not here, please contact us.

Email GSBS Admissions

When is the application deadline for GSBS programs?

Application deadlines start in December for Basic Science PhDs and run into August for the online certificate. Complete information can be found on the Admissions page .

Can I apply to more than one program?

Yes. However, every additional application requires payment of an additional application fee.

Do you offer a Master's Degree program?

GSBS offers MS degrees in  Clinical and Translational Science ,   Pharmacology & Drug Development , and Biomedical Research , a program that allows trainees to select from four different disciplines.

Are international students welcome in your programs?

International students are welcome. International students in the PhD programs in the Basic Science Division are eligible for the same financial package as other students. For tuition-bearing programs, international students are subject to the same tuition and fees as other students. Only US citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible for the BDBS, PREP, and MD/PhD programs.

How many international students are accepted each year?

The GSBS does not set a specific number of international students that it will admit each year, but instead weighs the applications of all applicants to select those who are the best qualified. About 20% of our students come from countries outside the United States.

What criteria are used to evaluate applicants?

Each applicant is considered individually. Program Admissions committees weigh many factors including academic history, research experience, recommendations, and test scores, if submitted.

Is the GRE required?

The GRE general test is no longer required for applicants to the Basic Science PhD Division programs, but it is required for the MS in Pharmacology & Drug Development. The GRE is optional for applicants to the MS in Biomedical Research.

Applicants to the Clinical and Translational Science Program who previously completed professional degrees (eg, MD, DDS, PharmD, DVM) are not required to complete the GRE general test; applicants with other degrees should contact the Admissions Office directly.

What is the minimum GRE requirement?

For the programs that require the GRE, there is no minimum GRE requirement; all factors are considered when reviewing applications.

Is a GRE Subject Test Required?

None of our programs require a GRE subject test for admission.

What is the minimum TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo/PTE requirement?

Minimum score requirements vary by program, and by test. The table below shows the scores required for each program.

Can the English Proficiency Requirement be Waived?

No, all applicants must demonstrate English proficiency in one of the ways listed under "English Proficiency" on the Required Application Documents page .

Can I send you a photocopy of my test scores in the mail, by email, or fax?

No, photocopies, faxes or emailed attachments of scores are not considered official. All GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo scores must come directly from the testing agency, and copies of PTE score reports must be submitted for verification.

What level of financial support is provided to graduate students?

Get more information on  financing your education .

Can I submit more than 3 letters of recommendation?

Yes. However, be sure that any additional letters of recommendation are coming from individuals who know you and your work and who can add insight and information that is distinct from that provided by your other recommenders.

Do you accept letters of recommendation from letter services such as Interfolio?

Personal letters of recommendation that specifically address your potential for success at GSBS are extremely important in the application process and are strongly encouraged of all applicants. Generic letters from a letter service will be accepted, but all materials must be submitted through the online application form. Each faculty recommendation must be accompanied by a completed applicant rating grid, which is available to the recommender within Slate.

Do I need an official transcript to apply?

No. You may upload digital versions of official or unofficial transcripts to your application. Complete official transcripts are only required for applicants who have accepted offers of admission.

Can I re-use materials from last year's application?

If you create a new application using the same account as last year, much of your information will automatically carry over (including valid test scores and uploaded transcripts). You will also have the option to bring in last year’s letters of recommendation, if you wish to do so. Your resume and personal statement will need to be uploaded again, and there may be new or reconfigured questions to answer as you review your application before submission.

Can my application fee be waived?

GSBS offers fee waivers to applicants based on certain criteria. See more information about  fee waivers .

How do I check the status of my application?

Once your application has been submitted you will receive an email notification from GSBS. You can log into the online application portal with your username and password which will allow you to view the status of your application at any time throughout the admissions process, including if materials are missing.

Can I apply for Spring admission?

GSBS does not have a Spring admissions period. New students are enrolled only once a year, either Summer or Fall, depending on the program.

When are admissions interviews?

Interviews for Basic Science Division PhD programs are typically held in January and February, with each program following its own schedule. Interviews for the MS in Pharmacology & Drug Development are often held in April and May. Interviews for the MS in Biomedical Research are held on a rolling basis from February to April. This program also offers interviews via Zoom.

If I am an international student, do I have to have an interview?

Interviews are required for all of our PhD programs and can easily be conducted remotely.

When will I be notified whether or not I am accepted?

Once you have submitted your application, check your  application portal  for more details

Do you accept transfer students from other biomedical science doctoral programs?

Students who have begun a PhD program at another university and would like to enroll in Tufts instead should apply through the regular admissions process.

Ph.D. Application and Admissions Information

Application Deadline and Starting Semester:  The application deadline is December 1 for the following fall semester for students requiring funding from the Friedman School. The School does not provide funding for spring semester starts. Students who have secured scholarship funding from outside the Friedman School may apply after the December 1 deadline, or potentially to start in the spring semester, but should first contact the admissions office at  [email protected]  to inquire.

Do I need to contact faculty about openings in the program?

Our Ph.D. application process does not initially involve applying to work specifically with a faculty member. The first step is to apply to the program generally, and all initial review of applications is done by the admissions committee. Advisor matches are made after an offer of admission is extended and accepted by the applicant. However, you are certainly welcome to contact faculty whose areas of research interest you to discuss the program.

Is the program funded, and do I need to apply separately for funding?

Our Ph.D. program is funded with full tuition scholarship and stipend. You do not need to apply separately for funding or scholarships. Initial funding generally comes from the Friedman School, and all applicants to the doctoral program will be automatically considered for any School funding sources for which they are eligible. Funding is limited, and the admissions process for students requiring funding is highly competitive.

What kind of educational background is required?

To be eligible to apply, you must have either completed, or be in the process of completing, a graduate degree. We do not offer direct entry to the Ph.D. program for students coming from undergraduate programs. Although it is not required that your graduate degree be similar to the MS program at the Friedman School, those who have completed programs with some coursework similar to our MS requirements will likely be at an advantage in the admissions process.

How long is the program?

If accepted, there will be variables that will determine program completion time. The first is the nature of your prior graduate program and how similar it is to our MS program. A requirement of the Ph.D. is the fulfillment of all required MS courses associated with your concentration for which you do not have equivalencies in your prior coursework. Please note we are not able to evaluate prior coursework until after an offer of admission is extended and accepted.  Another variable is the pace at which a student meets required milestones within the program. Most students who come into the program having earned their graduate degree elsewhere will have a 4 to 5 year process.

Are there online or part-time options?

We do not have an online/distance option for the Ph.D. There would come a time, after all coursework requirements are fulfilled and qualifying exams are completed, when research could be completed remotely with occasional trips to the school for committee meetings. But at least a few years would need to be spent in Boston. Part-time study is possible for those being supported by their employers. The School does not provide funding for part-time students.

Graduate Admissions and Aid

Application to the graduate program in Biology is made through the Office of Graduate Admissions . Please visit the Graduate Admissions website for information such as:

  • How to Apply
  • Application Deadlines
  • Requirements and Policies for Biology Programs
  • Funding Opportunities - There are a variety of funding opportunities for graduate students. Within the department you can apply for The Lily Glidden Award . Students in the Biology department have received grants from outside sources such as NSF, Fulbright, EPA and DOD. The Tufts graduate school offers awards for research and travel expenses.
  • GSAS Return to Tufts Program (formerly the TuftsPlus Program)  - Offers tuition scholarships to Tufts undergraduates who are admitted to a Tufts master's program. It also offers a streamlined application process in which the GRE requirement is waived and only two letters of recommendation are required.
  • Courses at Tufts - Created for people who want access to superior graduate-level courses but don't need or want a graduate degree, through Courses at Tufts, individuals can take the same classes as our graduate students and may enroll, for either credit or audit, in up to four graduate courses per semester.

Admission decisions are made by the Graduate Admissions Committee of the Department of Biology. We prioritize applicants who can demonstrate a high potential for success and passion for their Research Areas .

Note for PhD Applicants

We encourage applicants to the doctoral program to contact possible faculty mentors for further information about specific topics and availability of research opportunities. PhD applicants are also highly encouraged to check off one or two concentration areas of interest, and list potential faculty mentors in the space provided on the application. If the Admissions Committee determines that you are a candidate for our program, you will be invited for an interview and visit to the department in February or March.

Tuition Scholarships

PhD Candidates: Students admitted to the PhD program receive full tuition scholarships, a competitive stipend, and health coverage (guaranteed for six years). The stipend is supported by working as a teaching assistant, or, in many cases by paid research assistantships. If research assistantships are not available, students will continue to be supported as teaching assistants. Thus, the department is committed to supporting students throughout their dissertation research.

Master's Candidates: For students entering the Open Choice MS program, there are limited tuition scholarships available to help defray about 25% of tuition expenses. All students pay health service and other fees and must be covered by health insurance. Students who are U.S. citizens, or foreign students who reside in the U.S. and are fluent in English, are eligible for paid teaching assistantships that will support living expenses. Students admitted from foreign countries who are not fluent in English may not be eligible for paid teaching assistantships until the second year, and must provide evidence of independent support of living expenses for the first year. To apply for tuition scholarships please complete the Financial Aid Application section of the online application .

  • Applicants requiring accommodation during the virtual interview process must notify the Admissions Office in writing at [email protected] as soon as they have received the invitation to interview. All requests for accommodation during the interview process will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Our office will request supporting documentation following the initial review to determine how to best meet their needs during the vMPI process.
  • If you are unavailable on a particular interview date due to Religious Observances (e.g., Sabbath, Passover, Friday Prayers, and Eid al-Fitr), please kindly email [email protected] for accommodation. You may also advise us of your circumstances directly on the interview RSVP form. Such accommodations will have no impact on your MD admissions outcome.
  • If you are unavailable on a particular interview date due to other extenuating circumstance(s), we will also make best efforts, when possible, to provide accommodations.

Interview Format

The Modified Personal Interview (MPI) was developed by the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine and launched in 2014. The virtual MPI (vMPI), an adapted version of the traditional MPIs, was introduced in 2020 in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and related university closure. Both MPI interview formats are used for admission to the University of Toronto’s MD Program.

The MPI consists of four independent interviews assessed by four different interviewers. Interviewers are closely connected to U of T’s medical community and may include physicians, medical students, residents, health professionals and community members. Each interview is approximately 12 minutes in length.

The vMPI also consists of four independent interviews assessed by four different raters. Raters are closely connected to U of T’s medical community and may include physicians, medical students, residents, health professionals and community members. Each virtual interview is completed asynchronously and the video response is approximately 5 minutes in length.

Are you interested in Consulting?  Some of the largest management consulting firms – including McKinsey and Bain – have upcoming deadlines for internships and full-time positions with 2025 start dates .  Yes, this is a full year in advance!  Rising juniors and seniors should start preparing now if they want to be considered by these firms.  Details on deadlines and how to prepare are below.

Here is a roundup of upcoming deadlines across the board:

  • Bain Associate Consultant & Associate Consultant Intern: July 7 and September 8, 2024
  • McKinsey Business Analyst: August 8, 2024
  • McKinsey Summer Business Analyst Intern: September 12, 2024
  • McKinsey Sophomore Summer Business Analyst Intern: October 7, 2024
  • Oliver Wyman Summer 2025 Intern: May 19, 2024

Keep up to date with deadlines using this Deadline Tracker – by Management Consulted .  Many other consulting firms will have later deadlines in August/September.

Applications aren’t rolling – firms batch them at the deadline.

If there are 2 deadlines for a role, we strongly recommend applying by the first one because firms fill spots as they go.

Please see below resources to prepare your application:

Case Interview Preparation: Case interviews are very commonly used in the interview process for consulting firms. In the case interview, you will typically be given a business problem and then asked to solve it in a structured way. Learning this structure takes preparation and practice. Here is a case preparation guide !

Mock Case Interviews: You can schedule a mock case interview with Karen Dankers or Kathy Spillane

Employer Events: Log in to Handshake and click on “Events” to see consulting employer events throughout the year.  In addition, some employers will list events on their website:

  • Bain Events for Tufts students

Application Materials: In our Tufts Finance and Consulting Career Community, we have sample finance and consulting resumes to use as a guide.  We also have sample cover letters .

SAVE THE DATE: Tufts Consulting Networking Night – on campus on Thurs, September 12th in the evening.  Meet Tufts alumni and recruiters from 20-25 consulting firms!  Event details will be in Handshake closer to the event date.

Please make an appointment to review your application materials or ask about the consulting application process. As always,  feel free to reach out with any questions!
