Tips for Using Icons, Logos, and Symbols in PowerPoint
While adding icons, logos, and symbols to your PowerPoint presentations can be a game-changer, it’s essential to use them effectively and judiciously. Here are some necessary tips to maximize the impact of these graphic elements:
- Maintain Visual Consistency: Choose icons and symbols that align with your presentation’s theme and style. Consistency in using these elements creates a cohesive and professional look throughout your slides. If your presentation has a specific color scheme or design aesthetic, ensure your icons match it.
- Keep It Simple: Make sure your slides have enough icons or symbols. It’s crucial to use them appropriately to maintain clarity and prevent overcrowding with too many icons and logos. Use icons to highlight key points or to break up text, making your presentation more visually appealing and more accessible to follow.
- Size and Placement: Pay attention to the size and placement of icons. Icons should be big enough to be seen clearly but not so big that they take over your slide. Proper order is essential, as heroes can serve as visual alerts. They should guide the viewer’s eye and help them navigate the content.
- Use Color Wisely: Icons and symbols can be used in color or grayscale. Select colors that complement your presentation’s color scheme and help convey the right message. Avoid using colors that clash with your overall design. The goal is to enhance your slides, not to distract from the content.
- Test for Clarity: Before finalizing your presentation, preview it and ensure that icons and symbols are easily recognizable and don’t create confusion. If any icon needs to clearly convey its intended message or purpose, consider changing it or seek feedback from colleagues or peers.
In conclusion, PowerPoint icons, logos, and symbols are powerful tools for enhancing your presentations. They assist in conveying complex ideas, organizing content, and supporting branding. With lots of free resources, you can easily find and integrate these elements into your slides.
Use them wisely to keep your presentation neat and understandable and engage your audience effectively. Boost your presentations and make a long-lasting impact with the power of visual communication via icons, logos, and symbols.

What are PowerPoint icons?
Icons and pictograms are simplified, visual representations of a specific object or situation. You can find many examples of these symbols in everyday life. As traffic signs, they tell us which road may be used and how. Pictograms found on cleaning agents or other chemical substances, tell us what is flammable, corrosive or otherwise hazardous. And in public places, pictograms often tell us where we can find something and where we can do certain things: arrows point the way, a man, woman or wheelchair identify different public restrooms and a crossed-out cigarette tells us that smoking is prohibited.
All these symbols have one thing in common: they are universally understood and make a clear, strong statement. This efficient form of communication is not only extremely useful in everyday life, but also lends itself to situations where conveying information clearly and effectively is essential: in PowerPoint presentations.
An extensive selection of icons and pictograms for your PowerPoint presentations
Compared to clip art or 3D figures, icons look more professional. That's why they have become a standard in modern corporate presentations. PowerPoint pictograms are versatile – our selection includes a wide range of useful PowerPoint icons for various topics.
They are vector graphics that, unlike other file types, can be easily customized and colored. They can be easily scaled in Microsoft PowerPoint without compromising quality.
Our product range includes hundreds of PowerPoint icons for various topics, such as business, science, medicine and social media. Their uniform style guarantees a consistent design in your presentation. And you don’t have to worry about licenses or usage rights; you can use them freely in your PowerPoint presentations and any other Microsoft Office program.
Advantages of PowerPoint icons and pictograms
Many presentations get weighed down with too much text. Visual elements, such as images and graphics, help break up and reduce text. But finding graphics that have the right symbolic content, are cohesive and can be easily integrated into a presentation is not always easy.
Our range of icons and pictograms provide the ideal solution. They are streamlined, coordinated and use clear symbolism. They allow you to reduce text and liven up your PowerPoint slides with simple, yet powerful visuals.
Image vs. text: why visual design is so important
Why should we use visuals in PowerPoint presentations? What's wrong with a lot of text on slides? Indeed, both text and images are visual stimuli but they require our brains to work differently. Written letters are, in principle, nothing more than symbols strung together to form words and sentences. For the brain, assembling and decoding the information they contain means work. Far more work than looking at a picture – which can be intuitively understood, regardless of language, in a fraction of a second.
Using images and symbols makes a presentation both easier to understand and more enjoyable to look at.
Icon vs. clip art: a small but key difference
The terms clip art and icon are often used synonymously. Understandably so – they are similar in terms of their use and purpose, making it hard to distinguish between the two. However, there is a fundamental difference between the two.
Clip art images are a lot like comics and usually provide more entertainment value than substance. On the other hand, icons are sedate and smartly designed, and communicate a clear message.
But the differences don’t stop there. Clip art is typically a bitmap graphic. They lose quality when they’re scaled and they become pixelated and blurred. The icons and pictograms in our range are vector graphics that can be scaled without any loss of quality. Icons in Microsoft PowerPoint are, in a sense, the professional alternative to clip art.
The best way to use icons in PowerPoint
One big advantage of Microsoft PowerPoint icons is that they are easy to understand and uncomplicated to use. So, there aren’t many rules to follow here.
But to give a presentation a clean and cohesive design, the PowerPoint icons need to complement each other and be as uniform as possible. We recommend using a high-quality set of matching icons instead of combining icons from different sources. This also prevents problems with licenses and poor graphic quality.
In addition, PowerPoint icons used in a presentation should support the topic, be clear, unambiguous and easy to understand.

Best Sources for free Icons to use in PowerPoint Presentations
07.26.19 • #powerpointtips.
In a previous blog post, we presented our top 5 image sources for presentations. However, sometimes you do not need photographs, but rather icons to perfectly showcase the content of your presentation. So, here’s a list of the best free icon resources you can use for all occasions.
1. Flaticon
Probably the most popular website for free icons, which can’t be missing on this list. There is almost nothing you cannot find on this platform – in fact there are almost 2 million graphics you can choose from. For the flaticon basic license, you must credit the author, but you can find closer information on that with every single icon/icon pack – the instructions on how to credit are always very clear.
https://www.flaticon.com/
Just like flaticon, you can find many icons on freepik. With the basic license, the author must be credited (again, the instructions are very clear when downloading an image). If you buy the premium license, attribution is not required.
https://www.freepik.com/
Pixabay was already featured in our previous article, as they primarily offer photographs. However, the website also provides a giant number of vector graphics and illustrations. It is worth giving a try, especially since all the images are free and for commercial use, even without having to credit the author.
https://pixabay.com/
4. Icon-Icons
Icon-icons.com is another great website which offers thousands of illustrations for commercial and private use. The icons have different licenses – some require attribution, some do not. You can see this information in the description of each image.
https://icon-icons.com/
5. Freeicons.io
Find the icon you need by browsing through the many categories freeicons.io offers. The author and website must be attributed, there is a simple guide on how to correctly do that on their website.

How to Insert Symbols in PowerPoint?
Written by: Bill Whitman
Last updated: April 9, 2024
Inserting Symbols in PowerPoint
Inserting symbols in PowerPoint is a straightforward process that enhances the quality of presentations by adding important characters that may not be found on a standard keyboard. Whether it’s mathematical symbols, currency, or special characters, PowerPoint provides an easy way to insert them into your slides. Here’s how you can do it:
Quick summary
- Access symbols via the “Insert” tab and “Symbol” option.
- Choose from a wide range of symbols in different fonts.
- Use Alt codes for quick symbol insertion.
- Customize and save frequently used symbols for easy access.
Step-by-Step Guide to Insert Symbols
First, open a PowerPoint presentation and navigate to the slide where you want to add the symbol. Follow these steps:
- Click on the Insert tab in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- In the Text group, click on Symbol .
- A dialog box will appear showing a variety of symbols. Scroll through or search for the symbol you need.
- Click on the symbol you wish to insert and then click Insert . If you need to insert it again, PowerPoint may keep it in a recently used section for quicker access.
- Once inserted, you can click Close to exit the dialog box.
Remember, you can also use Alt codes for a faster way to insert symbols. Simply hold down the Alt key and type the code for the symbol you need.
Choosing the Right Symbol
When inserting symbols in PowerPoint, you have the option to browse symbols from various fonts. Some fonts like Wingdings or Webdings are designed especially for symbols and icons. Keep in mind, if you use these fonts, ensure your presentation is viewed on a system that supports these fonts, or the symbols may not display correctly.
Customizing and Saving Symbols
If you find yourself frequently using certain symbols, PowerPoint allows you to customize and save these for easier access. After inserting a symbol, you can adjust its size, color, and font style from the Home tab to match your presentation design. While PowerPoint doesn’t have a feature to save symbols directly, you can duplicate slides with these symbols or copy and paste them where needed.
Tips from LearnPowerpoint.io
At LearnPowerpoint.io, we recommend practicing the insertion of symbols to become quicker and more efficient. Learning Alt codes for your most-used symbols can save you time. Additionally, consider the audience’s context; ensure the symbols you use are easily understood and appropriate for your presentation’s purpose. Lastly, remember, using symbols can significantly enhance the readability and professional look of your presentation, so take advantage of this feature.
Inserting symbols in PowerPoint is not just about adding visual interest; it’s about making your presentations more accessible, informative, and tailored to your audience’s needs. With a bit of practice and creativity, you can leverage this functionality to create impactful and memorable presentations.

From flaticon.
- Click the icon to select it, copy it by pressing Ctrl + C and then paste it on the desired slide by pressing Ctrl + V.
- To modify its size, just click the icon and drag one of its corners while holding Shift to keep the proportions.
- To change the color, select the icon and, on the Format tab, click the Shape Fill or Shape Outline drop-down arrow (for reference, you can find the color palette in our final slides).
- To edit the color of just a single part of the resource, double-click it and select only the desired part. Then proceed as explained before.
- To work with just one of the elements individually (to change its color, separate it from the rest or delete it), select the icon and press Ctrl + Shift + G to ungroup, or right-click → Group → Ungroup. When you’re done, to group again, select all the parts and press Ctrl + Alt + G or right-click → Group → Group.
- Go to Flaticon and select the icon you like. Then press Download and select the PNG format.
- Drag the file to the slide or, on the Insert tab, click Pictures.
- If you want to modify its size before downloading it from Flaticon, choose the maximum size possible from the drop-down menu next to the PNG button and then adjust it on the slide after inserting it.
- If you want to adapt the color , click the icon and select the color from the Icon Editor panel. More about the Icon Editor .
- If you have an Office 365 account, you can also work with SVG graphics. To make an SVG editable, drag it to the presentation and, once it’s been inserted, right-click and choose Convert to Shapes.

How to Find the Right Icon and Use It [PPT best-practice]
Last Updated on October 18, 2022 by Anastasia
Using the power of icons is a great way to make your PowerPoint slide visual. Adding a graphical symbol helps to understand better the points you want to make. However, choosing a proper icon and incorporating it into your slide in a consistent way may take you some time.
In the following lines, I would like to share a bunch of designer tips on how to select and quickly adapt icons to enrich your presentation. I am using these tips almost daily with every slide redesign project we work with.
There are four criteria to consider when choosing an icon: Idea , Contrast , Space , and Style . Let me explore and explain each of those areas.
1. Icon Idea
When you want to add an icon to your slide, firstly decide what that icon should represent. It can be a specific object, quality, feature, or keyword from your message.
For example, for an idea of “benefit”, you can use a thumb-up icon or swoosh sign.
Icon symbol should be simple, so your audience can understand its meaning in a glimpse of an eye. It should also represent well the concept that you want to convey. Find a balance between being too general and not too complex.
If you work with PowerPoint templates from infoDiagram, use the Find function (Ctrl+F) to search for an icon inside our presentation decks. We include an icon set at the end of our templates. If your icon is not there, try the search on infoDiagram.com webpage. Or ask us for an icon suggestion in the webpage chat.
If you have an abstract concept to show, it can be harder to find an icon idea quickly. For example, to express Action, Change, Tax, or Outcome. It’s not that easy. Therefore we created an idea pool you can use – check our blog article 50+ Business Concepts Visualized by Icons .
2. Icon Power – Contrast
After you’ve found your icon, decide what visual power you want to give it. Ask yourself, how much you want to expose the symbol by using visual contrast.
The visual contrast is set by icon size and color.
- the bigger the icon is, the more attention it will take from the reader and that person will be less focused on other content.
- the same with the color – the light grey icon is less “screaming” than a dark black pictogram.
Notice the different contrast of icons in the example below – the symbols at the bottom serve as a light illustration of the 4 stages. On the other hand, the plane icon inside the dark blue circle gets most of the attention because of its size and strong colors.
Design Hint: Watch out when resizing the icon – don’t change the overal proportions of the symbol. Click the corner white point and hold Shift to keep the icon proportions. If you also press Ctrl, the resizing will happen centrally.
3. Space for Icons
You should also consider how much space you have on your slide. Adding icons should not make your slide too dense. It should make it easier to understand but not harder to read.
Be aware that some graphical styles of the icon symbols don’t look good if they are too tiny or too big. If your slide is already overcrowded with content, choose an icon that looks good even if it is small. For example, outline icons look better if they are over half an inch big (or 1cm). And simple flat icons are recognizable even if they are tiny, as you can see here:
4. Icon Style
The fourth thing is the style that you want to express in your presentation. Ask yourself a question:
- Do you want your icons to look neutral , not to steal too much attention? Then consider simple flat icons.
- Should symbols express modern elegance ? Try outline style.
- Do you want to express out-of-the-box thinking and a creative approach? Check hand drawn scribble style.
Design Hint: A secret of a professional presentation look is consistency. Speaking of icons – avoid the mistake of mixing icon styles (gradient, hand-drawn, flat, outline style…). Because then your presentation will look as glued together from a mix of sources.
After choosing the right icon by its topic and style, let’s look at how you can incorporate it inside your slide .
You can check more examples of using icons in the various context in our Resource section mentioned below.
I hope these tips will help you create slides that will be visually attractive and clear to understand. Good luck with your next presentation.

Presentation Management 19: Distribution
Do you want to add a degree symbol on your slide? Or do you want to add one of the currency symbols? Or even trademark or copyright symbols? PowerPoint provides several ways to add such symbols, but the most straightforward option is to use the Symbol dialog box. Let us now explore how you can add symbols within your text containers in PowerPoint 365 for Windows .
Follow these steps to learn more:
- Open your existing presentation, or create a new one. Next, find a container object that uses text, such as a text placeholder, a text box, a shape, a table, a chart, or anything else. Click at the point where you want to add a symbol. Doing so establishes an insertion point, as shown in Figure 1 , below.
- Access the Insert tab of the Ribbon , and click the Symbol button, as shown in Figure 2 , below.
- Doing so brings up the Symbol dialog box that you can see in Figure 3 , below.
- Options in this dialog box are explained, as marked in Figure 3 , above.
- By default, PowerPoint does not choose any particular font and any symbol you select will work with all fonts. However, you can change the font to a particular one by clicking the required font within the Font dropdown list, as shown in Figure 4 , below.
- This option to choose a specific font can be beneficial if you want to access a dingbat font, such as Wingdings, as shown in Figure 5 , below.
- Rather than making you scroll the entire Preview area, you can quickly go to the section you want to access via the Subset drop-down list, shown in Figure 6 , below.
- This area includes a grid that shows all characters available to you. You can scroll up and down to see more characters, or even use the Subset drop-down list to go quickly to a particular area you want.
Quickly Add Symbols
- Double-click any character to quickly add it to your insertion point in PowerPoint. You can double-click characters in quick succession, one after the other, to add multiple characters to your insertion point on the slide.
D. Recently used symbols
- PowerPoint remembers the last few symbols you used, and places them in the Recently used symbols area to provide you with quick access.
E. Character code
- You will see the character code of the character you selected in the Preview area here. You can also type in a character code within this area, if needed.
F. Encoding Standards
- Options in the Encoding standards dropdown list will differ, based upon the font you choose in the Font drop-down list. For instance, if you choose a dingbat font like Wingdings, then the Encoding standards drop-down list will show different options. With typical text fonts selected, the Encoding standards drop-down list may look like what you see in Figure 7 , below.
Encoding standards, Unicode, and ASCII
- Want to know more about Unicode, ASCII, and encoding standards? Look at our What's a Unicode Font? post.
G. Unicode name
- Other than the character code, Unicode standards include a plain English name for each character.
- Once you have chosen the symbol character you want to insert, click the Insert button, as shown in Figure 3 , shown previously on this page. Doing so will place the symbol character at the cursor position, as shown in Figure 8 , below (compare with Figure 1 , shown previously on this page). Otherwise, click the Cancel button.
