Although this essay is not of utmost importance, I have included it as a part of the Class 12 course, as students of FSC Part 2 often use quotations in their English essays to make them more impressive.

The essay discusses the merits and demerits of co-education, and I have carefully chosen appropriate quotations that add value to the essay. Students who are required to write an essay on co-education can use the same material under different titles, such as “Co-education Essay with Quotations,” “Essay on Co-education Merits and Demerits,” or “Essay on Co-education Advantages and Disadvantages.” I hope you find this essay helpful in your studies!

Introduction

Co-education is a system of education where both boys and girls are taught together in the same school or classroom. It is a controversial topic that has been debated for many years. Some people believe that co-education is beneficial, while others think it has negative effects. In this essay, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of co-education with relevant quotes from various authors.

Advantages of Co-education

  • Promotes Gender Equality Co-education promotes gender equality by providing an equal opportunity for both genders to receive education. According to Emma Watson, the actress and activist, “We are not supposed to be equal in the sense of sameness, but in the sense of equal value and equal rights.” Co-education helps to break down gender barriers and allows both boys and girls to learn from and with each other.
  • Encourages Mutual Respect and Understanding Co-education promotes mutual respect and understanding between boys and girls. When both genders interact with each other, they learn to appreciate and respect each other’s strengths and weaknesses. According to Kofi Annan, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, “Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development.” Co-education helps to build a foundation for a better society by promoting mutual understanding and respect.
  • Provides a Realistic Learning Environment Co-education provides a realistic learning environment that prepares students for the real world. In the real world, both genders work together, and co-education helps to prepare students for this reality. According to Gloria Steinem, the feminist icon, “A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men.” Co-education helps to create a level playing field where both boys and girls can achieve their full potential.

Disadvantages of Co-education

  • Distractions and Misbehavior One of the biggest disadvantages of co-education is the potential for distractions and misbehavior. Boys and girls can become a distraction to each other, especially during the teenage years. According to Henry David Thoreau, the American author, and philosopher, “Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify!” Co-education can sometimes complicate matters by introducing unnecessary distractions and complications.
  • Stereotyping and Gender Bias Another disadvantage of co-education is the potential for stereotyping and gender bias. Boys and girls may be stereotyped based on their gender, which can lead to gender bias. According to Sandra Day O’Connor, the former United States Supreme Court Justice, “We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone… and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.” Co-education may not be able to prevent gender bias and stereotyping.
  • Risk of Harassment Co-education also has the potential for harassment. Boys and girls may be subjected to harassment from each other, which can lead to a hostile learning environment. According to Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement, “violence does not discriminate.” Co-education can increase the risk of violence and harassment.
  • “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community – and this nation.” – Cesar Chavez
  • “The education and empowerment of women throughout the world cannot fail to result in a more caring, tolerant, just and peaceful life for all.” – Aung San Suu Kyi
  • “The education of women is the best way to save the environment.” – E.O. Wilson
  • “We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.” – Malala Yousafzai
  • “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
  • “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” – Sydney J. Harris
  • “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
  • “The goal of education is the advancement of knowledge and the dissemination of truth.” – John F. Kennedy
  • “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin
  • “The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson

In conclusion, co-education has both advantages and disadvantages. It promotes gender equality, and mutual respect, and provides a realistic learning environment. However, it also has the potential for distractions, stereotyping, gender bias, and harassment. It is important for schools to weigh the pros and cons of co-education and take appropriate measures to minimize the disadvantages. As Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Prize-winning activist, said, “Let us remember: One book, one pen

Co-Education Essay| Outlines and Quotations

Co-education essay with outlines and quotations is provided here. The quotations are added in the end of the article to maintain the flow of the article.

Introduction:

Co-Education means educating boys and girls or both genders together in one education system, under one building and in same institution.  In the recent times some of our colleges, schools and universities have adopted this concept.  A lot of people favor this system of education but also there exist some minds who do not accept this system.  Co-education is common concept in European and other developed countries but this concept is not as much popular in Pakistan.  In Pakistan a small number of colleges have adopted the co-education.  People in Pakistan believe that co-education leads girls and boys to wrong concepts of leading life.  However, there are some other people who believe that co-education can bring a healthy competition in girls and boys.  This can be beneficial to both genders mutually so we should adopt it.

Co-education and social intelligence:

It would not be wrong to say that this is the basic need of time to stand both genders together.  In the present era no development is possible without even one of these genders.  Both boys and girls are equally important for development in any sector of the country.  We should not deny that boys and girls have to live together in the society so we should prepare them in advance to survive with each other.  Co-education is very important for understanding social progress. Social progress can be defined as the capacity of a society to meet the human needs of its citizens and allowing them to enhance the quality of living.  No society can progress without competition.  If we will not allow boys and girls to compete with each other we will not be able to develop social intelligence in them.

Co-education, a controversial issue of our country:

There is no doubt that co-education has been a controversial issue of our country since after the partition.  There are some people who encourage this system of education and want to introduce in our country.  There can be many arguments to favor the co-education.  The major reason to support co-education in Pakistan is in a backward and financially ill country it is impossible to maintain separate education for both genders. Co-education will be proved good for the progress of the country, enhance the standard of education and develop as sense of competence in students.

But there also exist some arguments in defaming co-education which include: in country like Pakistan sex consciousness develops in early ages.  So it would not be wrong to say that co-education may lead to the lack of concentration in studies.  Because opposite genders attract each other so they lose interest and concentration in education.  Also there exists sexual harassment in co-education based institutions.  In co-education there are more chances of distractions, enethical activities and more interest in personal feelings.

Advantages of co-education:

A good education system is considered to be progressive if it give equal value and respects to both genders.  As co-education plays a vital role in social intelligence.  Co-education system can also be named as mixed-sex education.  In co-education boys and girls learn to develop a sensation of mutual respect.  In under developed countries like Pakistan sex discrimination has reached its peak.  Co-education can be helpful in overcoming the fear of opposite gender.  Co-education will also result in healthy competition and develops the sense of self-esteem among genders.

Almost all the countries of the world have accepted the concept of modernism.  Modernism can be defined as transfer of dogma to facts.  In this modern era we should understand that development of girls is as much important as boys.  So we should introduce co-education in order to encourage their survival in the future.  Co-education develops many mentionable characteristics in human personality which include character enhancement, denouncing discrimination on the basis of gender, developing a sense of competition in boys and girls, maintaining resources and promoting a controlled environment.

Co-education as a western culture:

It will not be wrong to say that some people support co-education because they want to adopt western culture.  There is a need to understand the difference between modernism and evil.  There is no doubt that west has adopted co-education and we can copy them too.  Co-education is not a form of evil.  It is just a getting education by the cooperation of your opposite gender.  Anything can be demonstrated wrong if it is used for the evil accomplishments.  And even a wrong thing can be right if it is done for the sake of someone’s benefit.

Here, I am not supporting or defaming the co-education.  My opinion is that co-education under a controlled environment and good administration of college, universities and schools will be proved beneficial in the development of country.

Conclusion:

To conclude, co-education is an excellent system of promoting education equally among mixed genders.  No country can lead to progress unless both girls and boys work together for it development.  So, we should promote co-education under a controlled system.  It is important to develop all-round characteristics of kid’s personality as it takes away the fear of interacting with the opposite gender.  Moreover, co-education prepares them for a world where they can work in all kinds of environment without being hesitated.

200-250 word Essay on Co-Education in India | CBSE Exams

( Write a short essay on Co-education in India, for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, advantages and disadvantages, 100, 200, 300 words essay )

Co-education means the education of boys and girls together in the same school or college at the same time. In India, it has recently become popular.

Co-education is not a new thing for us. In the good old days, co-education was in practice. There are many examples which show that co-education was all over the country in the days.

From the very beginning, voices have been raised against co-education. Stephen Lealock, an American educationist declares, “Men cannot read when women are around”.

There are many changes against co-education. First, it lowers the tone of discipline. Secondly, it brings about a shift in the minds of students. Learning goes to the background and ‘sex attraction reigns supreme’. Thirdly, it creates a love of fashion and extravagance. Fourthly, girls sometimes run with the teachers.

The Chief argument in favour of co-education is the economy. It would be foolish indeed to have two institutions at a place where the only one will do. A poor country like India which needs education of women more than any other country cannot afford to have two institutions at one place. The other argument is that co-education creates better understanding between young men and young women. After all they have to live together in life. Then why is this unnatural separation of sexes in our schools and colleges? The reasoning is sound.

Essay on Co Education in English for Students-With Quotes

Essay on co-education in english for students-with quotes.

co education essay class 12

One of the main advantages of co-education is that it prepares students for real-life situations. In today's society, men and women have to work together, and co-education provides students with the opportunity to develop social skills and learn how to interact with the opposite sex. As the famous educator, John Dewey  said,

"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself."

Co-education allows students to learn how to communicate, collaborate, and coexist with people from different backgrounds and genders.

Moreover, co-education promotes gender equality and helps to break down stereotypes. When both males and females study together, they get to know each other better and understand that there is no significant difference between them. This helps to reduce gender bias and discrimination, which is an essential step toward creating a more equal and fair society. As the famous feminist, Simone de Beauvoir  said,

"One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman."

Co-education allows students to see that gender is a social construct and not a biological fact.

Co-education also has academic advantages, as it helps to create a more competitive and stimulating learning environment. When boys and girls study together, they are more likely to strive for academic excellence, as they are motivated to keep up with their classmates of the opposite sex. As the famous philosopher, Aristotle  said,

"Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution."

Co-education helps students to strive for excellence and become more motivated and engaged learners.

On the other hand, some argue that co-education can have negative effects on students. One of the main concerns is that it can lead to distraction and a lack of focus. Boys and girls may be more inclined to pay attention to each other instead of their studies, which can negatively impact their academic performance. As the famous philosopher, Plato  said,

"Knowledge which is acquired under compulsion obtains no hold on the mind."

Co-education can be distracting and may not be an ideal learning environment for some students.

Another concern is that co-education can lead to inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment. When boys and girls study together, there is a greater risk of sexual misconduct and harassment, which can create a hostile and unsafe learning environment. As the famous educator, Plato, said,

"Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something."

Co-education can lead to inappropriate behavior and harassment, which can negatively impact the learning environment.

In conclusion, co-education has both advantages and disadvantages. It prepares students for real-life situations, promotes gender equality, and creates a more competitive and stimulating learning environment. However, it can also lead to distraction, inappropriate behavior, and sexual harassment. Ultimately, the effectiveness of co-education depends on the individual student, the school, and the society in which it is practiced. It is essential to consider the pros and cons and make an informed decision on whether co-education is the best choice for a particular student or school.

In short, co-education is a good way of educating children because it helps to prepare them for real-life situations, promotes gender equality, and creates a more competitive and stimulating learning environment. On the other hand, there are some concerns such as distraction

Kainat Shakeel

Co-education, the system where manly and womanish students study together in the same institution, has been a content of discussion and debate for decades. Its roots can be traced back through history, and its significance in shaping youthful minds cannot be exaggerated. In this essay, we claw into the colorful aspects of co-education, exploring its advantages, downsides, and the impact it has on academic and social development.

Pros of Co-education

One of the primary advantages of co-education is its part in fostering social skills among students. The diurnal commerce with peers of the contrary gender helps in breaking down conceptions and promoting a healthy understanding between genders. This collective understanding is pivotal in the moment’s different and connected world.

“Co-education opens up a world where boys and girls learn to live and work together, preparing them for the real-life collaboration they will face in the future.”

likewise, co-education encourages healthy competition. It provides students with an environment where they can contend on an equal footing, irrespective of their gender. This not only prepares them for the competitive real world but also promotes a sense of equivalency and fairness.

“Co-education fosters an environment where collective respect, understanding, and cooperation come the keystones of a balanced and progressive society.”

Cons of co-education.

Despite its advantages, co-education has its share of challenges. Distractions and dislocations in the classroom due to social relations are frequently cited as a concern. Critics argue that the presence of the contrary gender can lead to a lack of focus on academic hobbies. A lso, co-education may unintentionally support gender impulses. students might feel pressured to conform to societal prospects, hindering their particular growth and self-expression. It’s essential to address these challenges to produce a balanced learning environment.

Academic Impact

The academic impact of co-education is a subject of ongoing exploration. Studies suggest that co-educational institutions appreciatively impact academic performance. still, challenges arise in maintaining focus, as the dynamic social terrain may occasionally divert attention from studies. Understanding and accommodating gender-grounded learning preferences is pivotal for creating an inclusive academic atmosphere.

“Co-education isn’t just about participating divisions; it’s about participating perspectives, breaking conceptions, and preparing students for a world where equivalency isn’t an option but a necessity.”

Social impact.

The social impact of co-education is noteworthy. students in mixed-gender surroundings form different friendships that reflect the real-world scripts they will encounter in the majority. Co-education prepares them for social relations beyond the classroom, challenging societal morals and fostering a culture of diversity and acceptance.

Case Studies

Examining successful co-educational institutions provides precious perceptivity. Institutions that effectively navigate the challenges demonstrate that with the right approach, co-education can be largely salutary. These case studies exfoliate light on the strategies employed to produce a conducive learning environment.

Solution for Challenges

To address the challenges posed by co-education, enforcing effective classroom strategies is pivotal. preceptors play a vital part in maintaining focus and managing distractions. Fostering a culture of respect among students, regardless of gender, is inversely important. mindfulness and perceptivity programs can help produce a terrain where students feel comfortable expressing themselves while esteeming others.

Future Prospects

As education evolves, so does the outlook on co-education. Trends indicate a growing acceptance of mixed-gender learning surroundings encyclopedically. Understanding the nuances and conforming educational systems to accommodate different pupil needs is essential for the future of co-education.

In conclusion, co-education has both advantages and downsides. It’s a dynamic system that requires nonstop adaption to ensure a positive learning experience for all students. By addressing challenges, celebrating successes, and embracing a future-concentrated perspective, co-education can continue to play a vital part in shaping well-rounded individuals.

” In a co-educational setting, the classroom becomes a gauntlet of ideas, where boys and girls are moldered together, creating a generation that values diversity, equivalency, and cooperation.”

Essay on “Co-education” for Kids and Students, English, Paragraph, Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 12, College and Competitive Exams.

Co-education

Co-education means boys and girls studying together in the same institution. There is much to be said in favour of this system of education. Boys and girls learn to adjust with each other from an early age and so do not have problems when they become adults. They grow up together in a healthy atmosphere of openness and friendship. They are educated in all ways and can cope with any situation without becoming worried or anxious. A spirit of fun and competition exists in a co-educational school and both boys and girls become more aware of the world around them.

However, co-education has a few disadvantages too. The tender years of these children are full of stress, as they try to face the problems of coping with the opposite sex. They feel restricted and their personalities do not get a chance to develop freely. Certain subjects in the curriculum become difficult to study and on the games field too both sexes feel inhibited and shy by the presence of the other.

Most schools, these days are co-educational and are run successfully. On the other hand, there are many institutions still which admit only boys or only girls and these too are doing equally well. So the choice of school is all yours!

English Summary

Essay on Co education in English

Co education, as the word denotes, means education of boys and girls together in schools and colleges. When both the sexes receive education jointly, there is no need for separate institutions. This is obviously an advantage from the economic point of view since separate institutions and separate staff for those institutions will entail greater expenditure.

Co-education has many more important advantages. It enables the girls and boys to come into contact with and learn to understand one another. They receive their lessons jointly, they play on the fields together, they participate in the extracurricular activities together, they go out on educational tours together, in short, they get real opportunities to know one another.

When free contact between the sexes is allowed and encouraged, there can be no sex-suppression on either side. It is a psychological fact that the segregation of the sexes leads to many complexes. The age of puberty is crucial for both boys and girls, and if they get no chance to meet one another they are tormented by unhealthy, morbid thoughts.

Segregation, therefore, does great harm to youth-both male and female. Among girls, it often leads to hysteria and among lads it sometimes leads to vicious habits. Co-education prevents these dangers. The presence of girls in educational institutions has a refining effect on boys.

Generally, boys, if left to themselves will show a tendency to indulge in vulgar talk and indecent jokes Vulgarity, indeed, thrives among boys. If, however, a group of students standing and chatting together includes a few girls, the boys will take care not to use any vulgar expressions.

Boys will thus steadily develop a habit of talking decently and behaving in a gentlemanly manner. The mutual understanding engendered co-education also leads to recognition by men of the desirability of giving to women a high status in social life. Hitherto men have been only too ready to oppose any rights or privileges being conceded to women.

But this opposition is mainly based upon an ignorance of the latent potentialities of women. Co-education dispels this by affording men a first-hand knowledge of the capacities and abilities of women.

Another salutary effect of co-education is that it produces a healthy spirit of competition between boys and girls. Each sex makes efforts to excel the other. Both are therefore urged to a more fruitful intellectual exertion than is the case in separate institutions for boys and girls.

But co-education is not an unmixed blessing, and its drawbacks should be clearly recognised and guarded against the system has been bitterly criticized by many educationists. In the first place, men find it difficult to concentrate upon studies in the presence of women.

The temptation to look at a pretty face is always irresistible for a man, whatever his age. In youth, this temptation is all the stronger. It is too much therefore, to expect boys to attend wholeheartedly to their lessons when a number of attractive girls are sitting by their side in the classroom.

Again, there is a real danger that the free inter-mixing of the sexes at the age of puberty may lead to sexual misconduct Boys will aim at entangling girls, and girls may become the willing victims of unscrupulous boys. This sort of thing, besides being undesirable and improper in itself, has an adverse effect upon the discipline of an institution.

The needs of women are different from those of men. The same curriculum does not suit both the sexes. Boys and girls should not, therefore, be given exactly the same sort of education. If the list of subjects suitable for study by the two sexes are compared, the number of subjects common to the two lists may appear few.

But it would be a waste of effort to admit boys and girls to the same college and then to teach them separately on account of the differences based on the belief that there are wide differences between the mental constitution of the two sexes.

Girls tend to be more interested in their immediate surroundings, in what is pretty and ornamental, and boys in what is more remote from them, in what is useful, in what is general and what is abstract.

Co-education in India has made considerable progress. It has already been introduced in most colleges. The number of girls in co-educational institutions nowadays is as large as that of boys.

Independent: Education acts as a catalyst for a human being to be independent. If an individual is educated enough, they can manage their own life without being dependent on anybody.

Success: Education helps in framing our mindset in a positive direction, and with this mindset, people can make their lives better. With education comes a degree, and with a degree comes a lot of opportunities. You just have to make a better choice for yourself, and everything will fall in place.

Talking particularly about India, education is a constitutional right of every citizen irrespective of caste, creed, race, religion, gender, etc. That’s the status given to education in India because educated people are always treated well and are well respected everywhere in the world.

Role of Education in Society

One of the most important roles of education is that it improves personal lives and helps society to run smoothly. As mentioned above, poverty can be eradicated and every individual can contribute towards the development of the country.

Education Creates a Better Society: An educated person is more likely to develop better moral and ethical values as compared to an uneducated person. Education brings equal opportunity for everyone and educated people will be able to create a better society.

Education Creates a Better Human Being: Education is the most powerful weapon by which the entire perspective of the world can be changed. Through education, a person can develop good moral values. It helps us to become a better person in life.

Understanding the Responsibilities: As a social being, it becomes the responsibility of every individual to give something back to society and make it a better place for our next generation. An educated person is aware of his personal and social responsibilities.

Education helps in shaping the values of an individual. It helps individuals develop their moral values, humbleness, sympathy and empathy towards society, etc.

Students or any individual learn to express their viewpoints by reading, writing, learning. And these qualities or skills are taught with the help of education and nothing else.

Steps Taken to promote Education:

After discussing the importance of education, awareness is the next big step. People, especially those living in remote areas, should be aware and should have access to a better education system. The government has taken several steps for this purpose. It has started various initiatives to make education accessible to all and improve the quality of education for the betterment of every student.

Some of the Prominent Steps:

The formation of the Right to Education Act, 2009 made education a fundamental right for every child belonging to 6-14 years.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

Adult education and national development scheme

Beti bachao, beti padhao

Midday meal scheme and many more.

Various other initiatives that the government has taken are Udaan, Saksham, Pragati, etc., to make education accessible to every part of the county.

Conclusion:

Education is the pathway for a nation’s progress. Education is the backbone of society. The government should take all measures to provide education to every individual of the country. This will bring equality among people and when people improvise their way of living, they become more responsible towards society.

The literacy rate of more developed nations is also high, and the literacy of every nation depends upon its education system. The government undoubtedly has made laws and formulated schemes, but implementing those schemes is a major task.

The government, along with co-operation with the citizens, should make the society and nation a better place to live in. The growth of every nation depends upon the kind of population it has. A well-educated population will make a well-developed nation.

Essay on “Co-Education” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

Co- Education

Co- Education means education of boys and girls learning together in the same school or college at the same time. In India it has recently become popular. Co-education is not a new thing for us. In the good old days when ‘Ashrams’ were the seats of learning, co- education was find a number of examples which show that co-education was all over the country. The practice continued till the coming of Muslims in India. The Purdah system put an end to co- education.

Co- education is no longer a taboo. Even in villages and small towns girls and boys study together now- a – days. It has become popular only because of its many advantages. When girls and boys interact with each other from childhood, the fear, craze and mystery of the opposite sex is removed from the mind. They observe the changes that come in each other’s body and mind with age as a normal part of growing up. Moreover, they learn to understand each other’s individuality, behaviour and way of thinking.   Sitting, moving, taking, studying and eating together removes many complexes and makes the person’s approach more rounded and wholesome.

Education is not limited to the knowledge imparted only by books, it is a continuous process learned more from the environment , people and changes around as than merely from books. With the opening up of new vistas of learning, and new opportunities of career, it has been understood that men and women contribute equally in every field of society.

Co- education is a step towards this direction only. It teaches both girls and boys to be tolerant and respectful of competition with each other. This society has a great number of normal men and women. They don’t find anything objectionable in men and women mixing together.

For a poor country like India where we are still building up our national economy, how difficult it is to run separate girl- colleges. Either we can’t secure the series of efficient lady teachers or the funds do not allow us to run standard institutions of this type. The number of girl students, though rising every year, is not yet so high as to enable us to run separate colleges in India. On still higher level in Degrees, they have to be together as there cannot be separate universities and post- graduate colleges. A poor country like India which needs education of women more than any other country, cannot afford to have two institutions at own place. Co- education creates better understanding between youngmen and young women. After all they have to live together in life. There is no need of unnatural separation of sexes in our schools and colleges.

Twenty five or thirty years ago none could foretell that any Indian lady would be the first in women from any nation to preside U.N.O. Sm. Vijay Laxmi Pandit had this honour. Sm. Raj KuMARI Amirt Kaur also presided W.H.O. of U.N.O. in India they  are on highest levels – in M.P.’s and in offices – Sucheta  Kriplani, Deshmukh, Aruna, Renu, to name only a few. All these worked together with men in the leadership of Gandhiji and did a lot to win India’s freedom. So for a long past Indian tradition has been of honoring women. The darkness of middle ages should could us no more.

Colleges and schools are temples of Sarawati. Modern student is very sensible and responsible. India’s cultural roots are very deep, spiritual progress is always given a due importance in India. ‘Distance lends enchantment to the view’, in other words. A lady veil’ is a point of greater attraction whatever her beauty. So it is not proper to have separate schools or colleges.

Essay No. 02

Co-Education

Co- education is one of the very important questions that has always disturbed our educational pundits. Co- education means that there should be no separate schools for boy and girls.

There are differing opinions on the subject of co- education. Swpporters of this form of education give the examples of the western countries where this system was introduced years ago and has proved a success. They advance many theories to prove their point. Firstly, the system leads to economy. Secondly, it gives place to exchange of free ideas between boys and girls and removes inhibitions with which Indian boys and girls suffer. Thirdly, it enlarges the scope of and enthusiasm for competition and gives better results. Besides, the presence  of girls among boys in the same schools, colleges, and libraries will result in healthy thinking and any unwanted emphasis by boys or girls on the sexual side of their relationship would give place to a sense of comradeship.

Those who oppose co-education have their own arguments. According to them, though the system leads to economy yet the benefits as such are ultimately false. Moreover giving the same types of education to both boys and girls is equal to going against nature. Men and women are temperamentally  different and education to be beneficial must in each case be so adjusted as to suit both men and women. Thus the very idea of co- education is wrong.

Now if we weigh the  arguments of both sides we will find truth in both. In India co- education generally starts at the college level when free mixing between boys and girls is not possible because at this grown up stage they are very much sex conscious and shyness stands in their way. This argument has also not been able to prove right on the ground. Quite recently especially in the big cities of India, the conception of separate schools and colleges for boys and girls has almost vanished. It has been observed and to the satisfaction of all that co- education is more healthy a process. Such schools and colleges are successfully bringing  out educated youth fully confident on their talents without any inhibition for each other. It has resulted into a healthy atmosphere in offices and other places of work. Men and women are seen rubbing shoulders with each other in all the fields of life and the seed is sown in the schools and colleges. The women are becoming more and more confident in their activities and enough bold to face any hardship. Gone are the days when the girls were such commodities which were kept wrapped behind curtains and not shown the light of the day.

Essay No. 03

There was a time when it was believed that boys and girls should be taught in separate institutions. In ancient gurukuls, there were only boys who were given education them. In spite of this, women generally had good education in ancient India.

After independence, several education commissions and committees were set up. They generally advocated co-education in  schools up to 10+2 level and separate education for boys and girls at the university level till graduation.

This policy is now by and large being followed in our country. There is , however, co-education again at post-graduation level.

Some people believe the co –education should not be there. In their opinion this can lead to attrition between boys and girls and thus it can be of mutual benefit to both sexes. It can mean better  discipline since in the presence of girls the boys will not talk irrelevantly or obscenely in the class.

The most potent argument advanced by co-education lovers is that it can help both boys and  girls in the development of their personality. They can come out of their enclosed shell-like personality and get rid of their unwarranted hesitation and shyness.

This can make boys and girls more expressive, progressive and forded in outlook and attitude to life which can be of great advantage to both sexes.

It must however, be noted that some reservations are also there and even in a country like England, exclusive schools for girls are now being set up.

Essay No. 04

Co-education

When parents consider what school to send their child to, they often first decide whether they should send their child to a single sex school or to a co-educational one.

Some parents prefer to send their children to single sex schools, in order to minimize their contact with the opposite sex, and so, to some extent, prevent their children from indulging in such ‘hanky panky.’

First of all, it is important to understand that just by sending your child to an all-girls or all-boys school doesn’t stop them from seeking out the opposite sex. You can minimize contact when your child is in school, but you cannot stop your children meeting others through tuitions, extra classes, the neighbourhood, or through friends. If your child meets someone with whom she shares chemistry, and if she makes the decision to get physical with such person, there’s little a parent can do. On the other hand, when you send your child to a co-educational school, your child will have exposure to the opposite sex from the outset. As a result, your child will not only feel more comfortable in the company of the opposite sex, but will also be able to handle advances better. A girl studying in a co-educational school may have ten boys in her class that are interested in going out with her, and may ignore them all, preferring to just hang out with friends . On the other hand, a girl in an all-girl’s school will meet fewer boys, and fewer still will show an interest in her. Such interest, since it isn’t something run-of-the-mill for her, may cause her to get carried away. However, she may still have a lot of exposure to the other sex. In this case, she may be more balanced.

When making the decision of sending your child to a single sex or a co-educational school, don’t base the decision on whether you want to minimize or increase your child’s exposure to the opposite sex. Instead, consider the reputation of the school, the activities it offers and the quality of education and educators. Certain schools are geared towards sending students abroad for further studies. If you want your child to go abroad, this is something you may consider. Then there are other less traditional schools that focus more on activities and less on academics. If this is something that appeals to you, then give this fact more priority than the student mix. In fact, when deciding what school to send your child to, whether or not it is co-educational should be last on your list of criteria.
