Leading up to its 10th anniversary, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has invited schools to participate in an essay competition that requires an excellent demonstration of the history of the party.

The essay competition is open to all public and private secondary school-going Grade 10 to 12 learners in any of South Africa’s official languages: English, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, IsiNdebele, Xitsonga, Tshivenda, SiSwati and Afrikaans.

Participants must adhere to the following instructions:

• All entries should be typed and submitted in an electronic version in PDF format.
• All essays entering the competition should be in one of the South African official languages; English, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, IsiNdebele; Xitsonga, Tshivenda, SiSwati, and Afrikaans.
• All submissions must be accompanied by an EFF High School Essay Competition Entry Form which should contain full contact details of the entrant, including, an ID-sized photograph, physical address, telephone, fax number and email address; and contact details of the entrant’s parent or guardian.
• The essay should be no more than 1200 words and not shorter than 900 words.

Last Call for EFF School R40 000 Writing Competition

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has made its last call to scholars to participate in its Essay Competition.

THE EFF MARKS TEN YEARS BY EMPOWERING LEARNERS

This year, 2023, the party turns 10 years since its formation in 2013. In marking the 10th Anniversary, the Economic Freedom Fighters has called for submissions for entry into the Secondary School Essay competition. This competition is open for all secondary school‑ going learners of all walks of life and in all South African Official Languages; English, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, IsiNdebele, Xitsonga,Tshivenda, SiSwati and Afrikaans.

THE OBJECTIVE FOR THIS ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMME

Through this competition, the EFF seeks to inculcate a culture of writing among the youth. The ability to express oneself in a written form is central to modern life in all and every part of its aspects. With the advent of social media and short text messaging, the art of writing is daily undermined. According to the party, the youth who spend so much time on social media and message platforms like WhatsApp and iMessage turn to lose the general ability required for comprehensive long written works with complex and consistent arguments.

The party has visited schools to encourage participation before the closing of the competition.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE PART OF THIS EXCITING COMPETITION

• All South African‑based active High School going learners from both the public and private education systems between Grade 10 ‑12 can enter.
• Entrants will be required to provide evidence of their enrolment at their school.

The EFF High School Essay Competition topic is  “A 10‑year history of the EFF?”

“The topic emanates from the occasion of the EFF 10th Anniversary as all the winners will be published in a single booklet to mark this very occasion.” EFF

• A winner will receive an amount of R40,000 which will be paid to the account details of the learner’s choice.
• Winners will be required to present themselves physically at the event organised for the awarding of prizes.
• The competition opens on 10th March 2023 (Human Rights Month) and will close on 30 April 2023 (Freedom Month).
• The announcement of the winners will be made in June, during Youth Month

Spring 2024 High School Essay Competition

Central to the PLJ’s mission is to provide opportunities for students to explore their own legal interests and to develop their personal editing and writing skills. As a result, the PLJ runs a writing competition for high school students to extend this engagement and accessibility to the law.

Youth Scholarships

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay.  Each year, nearly 25,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. 

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$21,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least a scholarship of $1,000. Before submitting your essay, download the  2024-2025 entry form here  and find your sponsoring  local VFW Post  as applications must be turned in by  midnight, Oct. 31 . 

The 2024-25 theme is:  "Is America Today Our Forefathers' Vision?"

About the 2023-2024 winner ...

Sophia Lin, a high school junior at BASIS Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona, was named the 2023-2024 Voice of Democracy first place winner. Sophia's speech on the theme, "What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?" won her a $35,000 college scholarship. Sophia was sponsored by Scottsdale VFW Post 3513. Patriot's Pen

Each year, nearly 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000! 

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Before submitting your essay,  download the 2024-2025 entry form here  and find your sponsoring local VFW Post  as applications must be turned in by  midnight, Oct. 31 . 

The 2024-25 theme is:  "My Voice in America's Democracy?"

Bryant Day, an eighth grade student from Ashland, Ohio, was named the 2023-2024 Patriot's Pen first place winner. His essay on the theme, "How Are You Inspired by America?" won the national first place $5,000 award. Bryant was sponsored by VFW Post 9943 and its Auxiliary in Mansfield, Ohio.
