Postgraduate Programme

Doctor of philosophy programme (phd).

Applicants applying for the Doctoral should have the following qualification:

• A Master Degree in Information Technology/Computer Science from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or other universities approved by the Senate with a good Cummulative Grade Point Average (CGPA); or
• Other relevant qualifications or experience approved by the Senate
• Currently enrolled in Master by research in FTSM and supported by Faculty’s Postgraduate Committee to convert to Doctor of Philosophy programme.

English Language Requirements

• Score not less than 550 in TOEFL ; or
• not less than 5.5 in IELTS for particular programme.
• International students who have the academic qualifications obtained from any local university approved by the Senate will be exempted from requirement (1)(a) but are required to take Ujian Kecekapan Bahasa Inggeris (UKBI) and if they do not acquire the level set by the program, the candidates are required to take and pass Modul Kemahiran Bahasa Inggeris (MKBI).
• Faculty/Institute may grant exceptions to the English requirement for international students from countries with English as the official language or have academic qualifications obtained from institutions that use English as a medium of instruction.

Malay Language Requirements

Malay Language Courses (4 units)

All international students are required to follow two (2) Malay language courses equivalent to 4 units offered by the Citra Centre. Exemptions can be given to candidates who have taken and passed Malay language courses organized by other bodies recognized by the UKM Senate.

Doctor of Philosophy programme requires a candidate to do a research in the selected field and take the Research Methodology course. At the end of the programme, the candidate is required to prepare a thesis. The thesis has to be presented and defended in an oral examination which will be examined by examiners appointed by the faculty. Throughout the course of study, candidates are required to adhere to the following requirements :

Faculty Courses (4 Units)

Student must take and pass the Research Methodology course.

Proposal Defense and Research Progress

Student is required to submit research proposal and progress to the committee members between 6 months to 2 years of their study in order to continue their study at PhD level. Failure to submit their research proposal and progress may cause their studies to be terminated.

Publication Requirement

Students are required to produce at least TWO publications with a minimum of 2 journal articles (ISI/Scopus).

However, the PhD student can write to the Dean of FTSM/Director of UKM Postgraduate Office to apply for exemption from the minimum duration of study requirement, subject to approval from the Senate, having met the following conditions:

• Has received approval from the Faculty/Centre for Academic Management
• Has published at least two articles in high impact journals in the relevant research field, or in other journals endorsed by the Senate

The PhD student who is exempted under subregulation 5, has to pay the tuition fees for the duration of minimum study requirement.

• Full time (6 – 12 semesters)
• Part time (8 – 14 semesters)

• any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL);
• fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
• fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
• Master's Degree from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or have accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or an institution with accreditation as prescribed by a programme;
• other qualifications equivalent to a masters degree or other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or
• a student currently pursuing full-time master’s programme under sub-regulation 6(a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/Director; or
• Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA); and/or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board.
• any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or

Entry requirements for Bachelor’s Degree programmes (UKMi, Executive, PBJJ)

Local Candidate

• SPM qualification with credit in Malay Language or Malay Language July Paper and pass in History; and 
• Obtained at least Band 1 in MUET ; and

For candidates with STPM qualification;

Passed STPM with at least a CGPA of 2.00 and obtained at least:

• Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in General Paper ; and
• Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in two (2) other subjects. 

For Post-Matriculation Candidates

Passed KPM/UM Science Foundation / UiTM Science Foundation / UiTM TESL Foundation / UiTM Engineering Foundation / KPT Law Foundation Matriculation with at least a CGPA of 2.00 .

For Candidates with Diploma or equivalent;

Obtained a Diploma qualification or equivalent qualifications recognized by the Government of Malaysia and approved by the University Senate; or

Passed STPM in 2019 or before with at least a CGPA of 2.00 and obtained at least:

• Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in General Paper and
• Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in two (2) other subjects.

Passed Matriculation exams in 2019 or before with at least a CGPA of 2.00 ; or

Passed STPM examination in 2019 or before, with at least a Jayyid .

International Candidate

• Complete 12 years of Primary and High School education; and
• Obtain High School Certificate (e.g. Higher Secondary Certificate, Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate, Tawjihiyah, Ijazah Sekolah Menengah Atas, High School Diploma); and
• Meet the minimum English requirement set by faculty; and
• Pass UKM interview (if required); and
• Meet the faculty specific requirements;

Entry requirements for Master’s programmes

• Bachelor's Degree by obtaining a good Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from a University or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/or having accreditation recognized by a foreign Accreditation Body, or institution who has accreditation as prescribed by a programme;

• A person who intends to apply for a doctoral programme should have the following qualifications:

• a student currently pursuing full-time master’s programme under sub-regulation 6(a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/Director; or
• Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA); and/or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board. 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT

• International students shall fulfil the English language requirements by obtaining IELTS or TOEFL or MUET results or any examination that has been aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) that fulfils the minimum score or band requirements set by their respective programs and approved. by the Senate.
• students are allowed to attend an internal English Preparatory Course at the University with a time limit of a maximum of two (2) years and subject to the regulations of the Malaysian Immigration Department in force; and
• international students pursuing an internal English Preparatory Course must sit for the IELTS or TOEFL or MUET examinations or any CEFR-aligned examination to meet the English language competency requirements.
• The list of examination which has been aligned to CEFR is subject to the list approved by the Senate from time to time.
• international students originating from countries that use English as the official language; or
• international students who use academic qualifications from institutions that use English as the medium of instruction and intend to pursue higher studies at the University.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by AHSGS

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme must possess:

• A master’s degree from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; OR
• Any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; AND
• Fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.

ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Candidates for PhD programme under School of Computing (SOC) must possess a Master’s Degree or equivalent AND must have completed at least ONE (1) of their earlier Degrees (Master’s or Bachelor’s) in Computing or related to computing.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is offered by full research. Students should have adequate research knowledge and skills as stipulated by the Academic Committee. Students who do not possess these criteria are required to register and pass the following two (2) pre-requisite courses with at least a B grade before they continue with their research:

• SZRZ6014 Research Methodology
• SCLE6014 Academic Writing; and/or
• Any other courses as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee

Students are also required to:

• present their research work at colloquiums/symposiums arranged by the Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (AHSGS) /respective Schools;
• present and successfully defend their research proposals.

To complete the Ph.D. programme, students are required to:

• present and defend the proposed research/thesis to a committee;
• present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College;
• Option A: at least one (1) article is accepted for publication in ISI Journal or Scopus; and at least one (1) article is under review for publication in a refereed journal.
• Option B: Two (2) articles are published in a refereed journal.
• attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and
• submit a final thesis.

• Work closely with Front Office to ensure smooth execution, settlement and accounting entries
• Identify, manage and escalate issues and risks arising from the work stream
• Involve in other ad hoc sub-projects
