Assignment K (Blu-ray)

James Bond ruled the box office in the 1960s and it wasn’t long before producers jumped onto the Bondwagon with clones, such as Our Man Flint , The Silencers , and The Ipcress File . The lesser known Assignment K is a spy flick with many elements of the Bond films but less gadgetry and fewer elaborately staged action sequences.

Stephen Boyd ( Ben-Hur ) stars as Philip Scott, an executive of a London-based toy company whose job is a cover for operating his own independent spy organization to help England’s MI6. For his latest mission, to retrieve microfilm from sources behind the Iron Curtain that detail Soviet missile technology, he travels frequently to West Germany and Austria, ostensibly on business.

While in Munich, he becomes attracted to Swedish woman Antonia “Toni” Peters (Camilla Sparv, Murderers’ Row ) and uses their budding relationship to further conceal his activities. Unknown to Scott, however, a spy organization headed by a Mr. Smith (Leo McKern, Ryan’s Daughter ) has become suspicious of him and keeps him under constant surveillance in the hope that he can be compromised and forced to give up his contacts.

Like Bond, Scott enjoys his vices—smoking, drinking, and seducing beautiful women. He’s authoritative, self-assured, occasionally arrogant, and handsome. His job provides a plausible reason for him to travel to international trade shows in Europe, where he can simultaneously pursue his side hustle of secret agent. Because his clandestine work, if revealed, could be his undoing, he’s wary of strangers.

Director Val Guest ( The Quatermass Xperiment ) has the misfortune of a stiff leading man in Boyd. He looks suave and debonair but his acting is hardly convincing. His role seems to require nothing more than wearing elegant suits, never mussing his hair, and underplaying. While the various Bonds had charm, sex appeal, and intelligence, Boyd is wooden and mechanical. Neither reviewers nor the public ever regarded him as anything more than a second-rate Bond imitator and, with the glut of spy movies released during the 1960s, Assignment K had an unenthusiastic reception.

Camilla Sparv, the “Bond girl” of the picture, is a beauty. With a seductive quality and a winsome smile, she has palpable screen presence. But there’s so little chemistry between her character and Boyd’s that their romance rings false and hurts the story.

McKern’s Mr. Smith is a low-key villain who likes to paint rather than maniacally plan to rule the world or blow up countries. His power is in manipulation and coercion—not the strong-arm kind, but a more subtle form that can be more persuasive. McKern plays Smith with an intense gaze, wry smile, and lilting vocal cadence. His bearing and appearance suggest a college professor rather than a dangerous foe, so he’s able to remain undetected by keeping a low profile.

The script by Guest, Bill Strutton and Maurice Foster offers many tropes of the spy flick—glamour, danger, characters who may be other than they appear, and exotic locations. The story is grounded in the believable, with basic cloak and dagger intrigue, but it’s hard to accept a second-tier hero after we’ve seen the ultimate screen spy in James Bond. The film benefits from beautiful scenery in European locations, particularly picture-postcard wintry scenes on ski slopes in the Austrian Alps. An early sequence shows how the microfilm—the film’s MacGuffin—is passed from one agent to the next in a matchbox, a doll, paper currency, and even a cigarette butt. This is highly cinematic since it’s completely visual and we see how careful the agents are to conceal the microfilm until it eventually reaches Scott.

Assignment K was shot by director of photography Ken Hodges on color 35 mm film in the Techniscope process, processed by Technicolor labs, and presented in the aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The overall picture quality has a dated look, though it’s free of surface imperfections such as embedded dirt specks and scratches. Complexions seem a bit washed out, with Boyd looking oddly pale for a rugged Bond-style hero. Details are nicely delineated. There’s a lovely scene of night skiing with the skiers holding flares, and the snow-covered mountains provide a picturesque backdrop. Locations in Austria, West Germany and London give the film an international flavor. Interior scenes are shot with little imagination, and the picture’s paucity of action makes for an often sluggish pace. Director Guest does a nice job tracking the microfilm wordlessly from agent to agent by various means.

The soundtrack is English 2.0 LPCM Mono. English SDH subtitles are an available option. Dialogue is clear and distinct with ambient sounds well balanced. There’s more than the typical amount of dialogue for a spy picture in order to provide exposition. Gun shots have a tinny sound, like the kind you’d hear in a Coney Island shooting gallery. Basil Kirchin’s music attempts to amp up the excitement but lacks the grandeur of the Bond film scores.

There are no bonus materials on this Region-Free Blu-ray release from Imprint Films.

Assignment K is a film in the James Bond spirit but with a lackluster star. Stephen Boyd hasn’t the charisma and charm of Sean Connery or Roger Moore. The lack of action and suspense and a slow pace also are major flaws. Director Val Guest, saddled with a less-than-adequate leading man and a lumbering script, never manages to raise the film above the level of a glorified made-for-TV movie.

I have seen virtually every James Bond clone released by major studios during the 1960s but "Assignment K" had eluded me until it was released as a burn-to-order title by the Sony Choice Collection. I was expecting another low-brow effort done on a small budget and perhaps affording some guilty pleasures throughout. However, "Assignment K" was a pleasant surprise. It's an intelligently written, well-acted espionage yarn that goes to some lengths to avoid Bondisms in favor of a realistic scenario populated by realistic characters. The film was directed by the woefully under-rated Val Guest, whose talents were generally dismissed at the time as workmanlike competence but which today seem much more impressive. (Guest had some spy movie experience, having previously directed key segments of the multi-director farce "Casino Royale".)

Stephen Boyd stars as Philip Scott, a high-powered executive of a London-based toy company. When we first meet him, he is attending an international trade show in Munich. We learn very quickly that the dapper, charismatic Scott is actually a secret agent of sorts. There are cryptic messages passed and even more cryptic conversations that take place at the toy fair as well as Scott's luxury hotel. (He seems to have a Bondian expense account, if nothing else.) The plot centers on a real MacGuffin: something about sneaking a strip of vitally important microfilm back to MI6 in London. Naturally, there are bad guys who want the microfilm, too, though I was never clear about precisely what information the strip contains. Nevertheless, Scott is not above mixing business with pleasure and during the course of his visit to Munich he meets Toni Peters (Camilla Sparv), a gorgeous young Swedish woman on holiday at a ski resort. She initially resists his attempts to get a date, but finally she relents. Scott goes all out to show her a good time and his substantial expense account certainly aids in the effort. He takes her a non-stop, dizzying agenda before succeeding in getting her back to luxurious villa. It isn't long before the undercover man is literally under the covers with his new flame. Before long, the two are madly in love- and Scott doesn't seem to be bothered by that gentleman's code for secret agents that dictates you shouldn't get too romantically involved with any "civilians".  Scott's selfish obsession with Toni is understandable. (Hey, she looks like Camilla Sparv!). However, his judgment proves wrong when he continues to date her even after one of his contacts is murdered on a ski slope by adversaries who are after the microfilm. Ultimately, Toni is kidnapped and held for ransom, the price being that Scott must identify his key contact in Munich. Surprisingly, he agrees to do so, though the resolution of the problem is a little confusing in terms of his motivation. Throughout the plot, Scott keeps assuring the perplexed Toni that the real danger is over and the couple returns to London. Here, we see Scott report to his MI6 boss, Harris (played with amusing world-weariness by Michael Redgrave), who reminds him that he is putting an innocent girl in jeopardy. Sure enough, Toni is kidnapped once again, thus forcing Scott to follow in 007's footsteps in one key respect: he goes to the "toy company's" version of gadget master "Q"  (Geoffrey Blaydo,n in an amusing reprise of virtually the same character he played in "Casino Royale") in order to use hi tech methods of tracking down where the kidnappers are located. He also imposes on the branch to devise a time bomb in a desperate attempt to free the innocent woman whose life he has now placed in danger. That's the extent of the hardware and gadgetry used in this film. Scott doesn't drive fantastic cars, nor does he have the ability to press buttons to get himself out of jams. He loses fist fights and takes beatings in a refreshing nod to realism.

Boyd's character is in the mode of Harry Palmer: he's clearly not enamored of moonlighting as a secret agent. (Unlike Palmer, he freelances, and thus can quit the profession at any time.) His cynicism, however, never reaches the depths of Alec Lemas, the despondent protagonist played by Richard Burton in "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold". Lemas was so cynical and disillusioned that you felt all the joy had been sapped from his life. Scott, however, adopts Palmer's ability to thumb his nose at his superiors but has not lost his when it comes to his vices: smoking, drinking and bedding beautiful women. The character is very well played by Stephen Boyd, an actor who could go over-the-top occasionally (see "The Oscar"!) Here he delivers one of the most restrained and impressive performances of his career. Sparv provides the kind of old world, spy girl glamour that is in short supply nowadays- and she is a more than competent actress, as well. The supporting cast is terrific and includes the great Leo McKern and Jeremy Kemp as heavies, as well as an appearance by Jan Werich, who originally filmed sequences as Blofeld in "You Only Live Twice" only to be replaced by Donald Pleasence. The film has an exotic look to it, as director Guest maximizes locations in London, Austria and "West Germany". (Isn't it satisfying that we can now eliminate "West" and "East" when describing Germany?) The plot is a bit confusing but the characters and dialogue are intriguing and there are some genuine surprises that are unveiled at the climax of the story. The only complaint is the musical score by Basil Kirchin, which is far too lightweight and zippy for a film with this somber premise.

"Assignment K" didn't make much of an impact during its initial release. Perhaps audiences were so jaded by the tidal wave of spy movies. In the U.S., the film was released as the second feature on the same bill with the horror film anthology "Torture Garden" and was dismissed by the New York Times in a few sentences that indicated it was nothing more than a glorified travelogue. It's a pity because if the film had received the reception it deserved, Boyd could have continued to play the character of Philip Scott in some well-warranted sequels.

The Sony Choice Collection DVD has a fine transfer, but is devoid of any extras, including a trailer or even a menu. Can't this film get some respect?

Doja Cat Explains Why ‘Scarlet’ Is an ‘Angry Project’: I’m ‘Squaring Up With Everyone & Defending Myself’

Doja Cat attends The 2024 Met Gala Celebrating "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 06, 2024 in New York City.

Doja Cat aired out a lot grievances on her 2023 album Scarlet .

And in a new interview with Jack Harlow for Present Space , the “Paint the Town Red” rapper explained why tapping into her own fury was such an important part of her creative process. “ Scarlet is a very, to put it simply, quite an angry project,” she said in the conversation published Thursday.

“I think the point of that album was to showcase anger and how it processes through my mind, but also it’s about coming to your own defense and love,” Doja continued. “It’s sort of my ‘Why I oughta!’ moment of squaring up with everyone and defending myself, telling myself that I’m here for me, and not just for everybody else’s enjoyment.”

Trending on Billboard

While speaking to the “First Class” rapper, Doja also opened up about why she meticulously vets who she does and doesn’t follow on social media. “I think that as people, we are not ready, or not fully prepared, or fully evolved, as far as the Internet,” the Grammy winner said. “So when we see things on the Internet, there’s things that we think we’re in control of, that we’re not in control of. And when we see people having a good time, but we’re bed rotting, not having the best day, and we scroll and see something that’s not an artistic expression, but somebody doing something we wish we were doing, I think that we don’t take into account what that does to our brains.”

“I know that I just shouldn’t follow people who aren’t going to be creative, because that’s more mentally stimulating to me in a positive way, to follow people who are creating something new,” she continued. “It’s a safe haven for me as opposed to a place where I am watching people either pretend to be happy or genuinely be happy. I don’t want to use my phone in order to witness people’s happiness which I’d rather experience in reality.”

Hickenlooper, bennet, and boebert introduce bipartisan bill to complete the arkansas valley conduit.

Sep 10, 2024

Project will deliver clean drinking water to more than 50,000 Coloradans, helping communities with radioactive groundwater contamination

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet introduced the Finish the AVC Act to lower the cost of completing the Arkansas Valley Conduit (AVC) and make sure the federal government helps finish the project. Bipartisan companion legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives by U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert.

“Water has been the lifeblood of Colorado’s Arkansas River Valley since long before JFK promised to deliver them clean drinking water,” said Hickenlooper. “Sixty years later, our bill will help Southeastern Colorado communities harness their resources to get the job done.”

“This bill will ensure the federal government makes good on its promise to Southeastern Coloradans to deliver a safe and reliable water supply,” said Bennet. “We have invested over $300 million to build the Arkansas Valley Conduit over the past decade and now we must ensure increased costs don’t stop this project in its tracks.”

“Southeastern Coloradans need access to a clean, sustainable water supply that every family can depend on, which is what the Finish The AVC Act will deliver. I’m proud to introduce this legislation with our Senators to help our rural communities in Colorado see this critical project through to completion,” said Boebert.

The Finish the AVC Act would remove interest payments on all non-federal cost share funds and extend the repayment period from 50 to 100 years. This bill helps make sure that underserved communities of Southeastern Colorado can access clean drinking water and repay the federal government. The estimated cost of the project more than doubled from the 2019 estimate of $640 million to $1.3 billion due to increased inflation and labor costs.

The Arkansas Valley Conduit is the final component of the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, a water diversion and storage project in the lower Arkansas Valley, which Congress approved in 1962. Once constructed, the Conduit will deliver clean drinking water from the Pueblo Reservoir to more than 50,000 families, producers and municipalities throughout 39 communities in the Arkansas River Valley. Currently, these Southeast communities rely entirely on groundwater, with several facing water contamination from naturally-occurring radioactive elements.

“Water is one of our most precious resources in Colorado and we are committed to helping every Coloradan access clean drinking water. This project will support access in the Arkansas valley and I thank Senator Bennet for his leadership on this issue,” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis.

“This is another very important step for the people of the Lower Arkansas Valley who have struggled to get the Arkansas Valley Conduit moving ahead for more than 60 years. Now that the AVC is finally under construction and given the current estimated cost of the AVC project, this legislation is absolutely necessary to make this dream a reality. We are grateful for our entire congressional delegation stepping up to make it happen,” said Bill Long, President, Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District.

Hickenlooper and Bennet have consistently advocated for increased federal funding for the AVC. Both senators helped deliver $250 million in funding for the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the AVC, including $90 million earlier this year, $100 million in 2023 and $60 million in 2022. Following Hickenlooper and Bennet’s call to the Senate Appropriations Committee Leadership this April to increase funds for the project, the Committee included $13 million for the AVC in their fiscal year 2025 Energy and Water bill.

The text of the bill is available HERE .

  15. Assignment K (Blu-ray Review)

Basil Kirchin's music attempts to amp up the excitement but lacks the grandeur of the Bond film scores. There are no bonus materials on this Region-Free Blu-ray release from Imprint Films. Assignment K is a film in the James Bond spirit but with a lackluster star. Stephen Boyd hasn't the charisma and charm of Sean Connery or Roger Moore.

  16. Review: "Assignment K" (1967) Starring Stephen Boyd and Camilla Sparv
