Pronunciation Guide (American English Dictionary)
All pronunciations in the Oxford Advanced American Dictionary are American pronunciations.
In the written pronunciations, the following symbols are used:
If more than one written pronunciation is given for a word, they are all acceptable, but the first form given is the most common. Not all possible American pronunciations are shown in this dictionary. For example, some speakers only use the sound / ɔ / when it is followed by / r / (as in horse / hɔrs /) and use / ɑ / in all other words that are shown with / ɔ / in this dictionary, so that they pronounce both caught and cot as / kɑt /.
/ ˈ / shows the strong stress in a word or group of words. It is in front of the part (or syllable ) that you say most strongly. For example, any / ˈɛni / has a stress on the first syllable; depend / dɪˈpɛnd / has a stress on the second syllable.
/ ˌ / shows a weaker (or secondary ) stress. Many longer words have a syllable that is pronounced with a secondary stress as well as a syllable with strong (or main ) stress. So in the word pronunciation / prəˌnʌn siˈeɪʃ n /, the main stress is on the syllable / ˈeɪ /, and the secondary stress is on the syllable / ˌnʌn /.
American speakers use the sound / t̮ /, which is like a quick / d /, in many words spelled with -t- or -tt- . It is used in words after a vowel or / r /, and before an unstressed vowel or syllablic / l /: city / ˈsɪ t̮ ɪ /; parting / ˈ p ɑr t̮ ɪŋ /; little / ˈ lɪ t̮ l /.
The sounds / l / and / n / can often be “syllabic” – that is, they can form a syllable by themselves with an extremely reduced vowel. This is shown by the symbols / l̩ / and / n̩ /, for example in the words botany / ˈbɑtn̩i / and finalist / ˈfainl̩ɪst /.
Strong and Weak Forms
Some very common words, for example an , for , of , and that , have two or more pronunciations: a strong form and one or more weak forms. For example, for is pronounced / fər / in the sentence It’s for you . The strong form occurs when the word comes at the end of a sentence or when it is given special emphasis. For example, for is pronounced / fɔr / in Who’s it for? and The present isn’t from Anna, it’s for her .

AFAM Undergraduate Spotlight: Diego Palko reflects on his Spring 2024 CURO Presentation
IAAS major, Diego Palko, presented a poster in the 2024 Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Symposium, which highlights the work of UGA students and presents an opportunity for them to communicate their research to a broader community. Mr. Palko’s poster, “The Evolution of R&B and Themes Presented in the Genre: A Literary and Sonic Analysis,” presented information on the roots of R&B and on its evolution as a sonic and literary genre, engaging themes of Blackness, sexuality and love, and Black womanhood. He argued that Hip-Hop rhythms now are incorporated into R&B in the work of current artists like Frank Ocean, Steve Lacy, and The Weekend. We invite you to keep reading as Mr. Palko reflects upon his experiences that he brings to his CURO work and gives advice for students wishing to pursue similar opportunities.
What are your majors, minors, or programs of study at UGA? What year are you in your study?
- My majors are African American Studies and Journalism, a double major. I am also a political science minor. I am a third-year undergraduate student and will graduate in May of 2025. After that, I plan on attending an MA program or JD program at another university to pursue a Masters of English or Law degree.
How did you go about securing a professor to work with for your CURO project? What advice do you have for students going through that process?
- My professor for this year’s CURO project was Dr. Medine, the Director of the Institute for African American Studies. I’ve had Dr. Medine for class before and I have an established relationship with her, so when I began drafting ideas for my CURO project, I knew Dr. Medine would be the perfect mentor for the entire process. I think it’s definitely important to keep in touch with your professors and always establish a relationship and connection with them, because you never know when they could be a valuable resource and give you amazing academic advice.
How did you decide upon your topic?
- I knew I wanted to do something with African American music or religion when I first began drafting ideas with Dr. Medine. I am a journalism student, and I am always consuming media, so during the time of the Superbowl when famous R&B singer Usher was scheduled to perform, I began reading profile pieces on him by media outlets. Profile pieces are important and relevant in my journalism major, so I regularly like to read them to gather composition ideas for my own stories in my journalism major that I must complete. When I was reading these profile pieces on Usher, I discovered his early music career and beginnings started in the church. I then did more research and found out this was a common theme for many R&B singers, so I decided then form my abstract and thesis statement centered around the evolution of R&B, both from a literary and sonic sense.
How did you feel after giving your CURO presentation? How would you recommend that students prepare for such an experience?
- I felt very good after giving my presentation. It went well. I was less nervous than I expected myself to be. However, when you devote so much time to researching a topic and become familiar with it, it becomes second nature and talking about the topic begins to flow well once your knowledge about it increases. I would say the best way to prepare for an experience like CURO would just be to research your topic from head to toe and choose a topic that you are interested in, so research is interesting and captivating. Don’t go surface level. If you have enough volume of research, then you will be able to make connections with other topics and hyper-analyze sub-topics within the umbrella of a major topic.
Congratulations, Diego! We are proud of your work. The Institute encourages all our majors and minors to engage in undergraduate research and to present that research in the annual CURO Symposium through either a poster or a 10-minute oral presentation. See the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities webpage for information: https://curo.uga.edu/ .

People are going crazy over how this self-checkout pronounces 'organic bananas'
- TikTok users are reveling in how a Stop & Shop self-checkout pronounces "organic bananas."
- The video has racked up 7.3 million views, and people are trying to figure out what makes it so funny.
- It's drawn more positive attention to self-checkouts, which have typically been subject to scrutiny.
The robotic voice of a Stop & Shop self-checkout has the internet cracking up in how it pronounces "organic bananas."
A video posted to TikTok by user Everett showed a man putting the "organic bananas" through the self-checkout and laughing at the intonation of the machine's pronunciation.
"That's my favorite thing in this whole store," the person who appears to be filming the video says.
The TikTok racked up 7.3 million views in just 10 days, and the comment section is bursting with people trying to understand what makes it so funny.
"She says it like she's trying not to laugh at our little inside joke about organic bananas," one comment with nearly 200,000 likes says.
"It's like she tilts her head down, looking over her glasses, and smirks when she says bananas," said another.
The company even commented on the video, saying: "We just feel really passionately about ~organic bananas~."
Related stories
In a statement to Business Insider, a spokesperson for the chain said that it is " finding it b-a-n-a-n-a-s that this TikTok is getting so much traction!
"It's not every day our self-checkout machines become a viral sensation, but we're here for it," they added.
The comments on the organic bananas video spurred the user to post more TikToks of the self-checkout pronouncing different products.
Yams were next. "Okay, the self-checkout voice saying 'yams' is kinda aggressive," he wrote on text overlay on the video , which has 2.4 million views. The next video showed the checkout trying to pronounce "bok choy."
Some users were surprised that the checkout named the items out loud. "Imagine buying personal items, and it just announces it to the world," one comment on the bok choy video said.
Self-checkouts have faced a lot of scrutiny in recent years.
They've been blamed for alienating shoppers , and increasing cases of shoplifting .
California's Senate is even considering a proposal to restrict retailers from using self-checkouts unless they meet specific conditions.
"Organic bananas" has, at least, provided some respite from self-checkout security and given social media users a laugh.

The rings will feature a plethora of details with nods to the accomplishments of Army's senior class, as well as other classes who claimed the CIC trophy for West Point. This includes the ten seasons that Army has won the CIC trophy outright along the outer sides of the ring. The six stars on one side also symbolize the wins of the Army senior class over Navy and Air Force over the last few years.
Army's 2023 win was the first time that the Black Knights won the trophy outright since 2020.
Army football will open up the 2024 season on August 30 when they host FCS foe Lehigh. The Black Knights will face Air Force on November 2 and Navy on December 14.
