When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

• Price: Free!
• Best for: Practicing tough material 

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace. 

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads. 

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

• Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
• Best for: 24/7 homework assistance  

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.  

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school. 

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects. 

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help 

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help. 

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter! 

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.  

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly. 

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below. 

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites 

First, let’s take a look at the benefits. 

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays. 

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college. 

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school. 

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook . 

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts. 

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites 

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help. 

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming 

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up. 

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service! 

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. 

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating. 

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website. 

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best 

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most. 

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need 

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Homework-help program encourages youth to be self-directed learners.

Power Hour: Making Minutes Count helps Club members ages 6-18 achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring and high-yield learning activities and encouraging members to become self-directed learners.

Designed specifically to help kids and teens with homework, this program is available after school at Clubs. Dedicated youth development professionals and volunteers supervise each session and help youth members complete their assignments for the day. When they finish their work, they may choose to participate in a variety of other engaging and educational activities to develop their skills even further.

Power Hour is a great opportunity for kids and teens to get their homework completed in a quiet place with support from trained, caring staff at a Boys & Girls Club.

In the homework assistance program, students receive all-around academic support. Your child’s tutor will help them complete homework assignments, reteach confusing concepts from class, prepare for tests, and teach them the studying and organizational skills needed to succeed in school.

Students work in small groups of 3-4 students with consistent tutors who get to know them and their learning style. Consistent tutors & small groups means students get individualized attention that meets them where they’re at and helps them impove week by week.

My kids actually enjoy Ready Study Go too! Four essential features to seek in an after-school program

Effective homework help can reduce stress for students and their families.

When it comes to after-school programs, there are all types from which to choose. But when it comes to finding a program that offers high-quality service and engaging activities that help children do better in school, that can be a challenge.

I know this because in the early 2000s, I evaluated after-school sites in the state of Florida as part of the federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.

I’ve seen some highly effective programs, such as one that taught students with developmental disabilities how to kayak and sail. But I’ve also seen a program in which officials seemed to be packing as many kids as they could into their facility because the program got funded based on how many students were registered. There were no structured activities. They even balked at my assessing how well they delivered services like homework assistance. They had so many kids to oversee, the notion of providing students with high-quality help seemed hardly to be a consideration.

At a different program I went to evaluate, at a rural high school in the Florida Panhandle, kids didn’t even know they were in a program.

“Program? What program?” a student responded to me once when I announced the reason I was there. “Coach just told us to meet someone in the library today for something.”

That was nearly 20 years ago. Since then, after-school programming has continuously struggled to meet demand , so finding a high-quality program may be even more difficult.

In 2020, one survey found, there were 24.6 million children who would have enrolled in an after-school program if one were available to them – 5.2 million more than in 2014, when the figure stood at 19.4 million.

Participation in an after-school program offers many benefits. Research has found, for instance, that it can boost students’ overall academic performance and behavior in school .

As an educator who focuses on how to ensure after-school programs actually help children learn, here are four elements that I urge parents and other caretakers to consider to make sure their children’s time in a program is time is well spent. Since many students suffered learning losses during the COVID-19 pandemic , I believe a sharper academic focus in after-school activities has taken on even greater importance.

1. Objectives and purpose

If a parent wants only a place for their child to be safe until they get off work, a program’s purpose may not matter. But most adults believe after-school programs should enable kids to explore topics of interest, try out new things and gain skills like communication and teamwork.

If a program description explicitly states that it provides homework assistance, tutoring, academic enrichment activities or opportunities to do community service, that is a good first step. Some programs have no discernible objectives, or they are broad and vague.

When programs use project-based academic activities, they can be effective in helping students to better understand specific subjects, such as math. The programs can be even more effective when the activities incorporate material from the child’s regular school .

That way, a program can maximize its academic impact . School-based programs have an advantage in this regard, since program staff can more easily communicate with staff from a child’s school.

2. Scheduled activities

If a program lacks a schedule that spells out what students will be doing, that can be a telltale sign that it doesn’t have much to offer. In my experience as a program evaluator, high-quality programs usually schedule activities in a way that helps promote their objectives.

For example, there are benefits when a specific time is set up for participants to complete homework with qualified staff who can provide meaningful help. When students complete their homework before coming home, it lessens stress for students and their families by saving more time for family activities and sleep.

3. Qualified staff

Parents should inquire about what kind of training and credentials staff have to do their jobs.

In terms of credentials, some examples include a child development associate certification, a certification in positive youth development or a certification through the National Enrichment Teachers Association . Such credentials show another level of professionalism .

Some programs may partner with a local college or university to bring on college students as volunteers. Research shows that college students bring a certain passion and enthusiasm to programs, and that participants “ feel special ” when older peers take an interest in them.

Parents should also ask how many staff members are on hand. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends a ratio of no more than 10 to 12 school-age students per qualified adult and groups of no more than 20 to 24 students with two qualified adults. When group and class sizes are reasonable, it better enables staff to provide high-quality learning experiences that can also include individual attention as warranted.

4. Daily attendance

Daily attendance patterns can offer clues about the level of student interest in a program. Don’t assume or accept that attendance is low because a program is too academic. Research has found that academic activities do not lower attendance at high-quality after-school programs.

Officials at successful programs expect regular attendance and collect attendance data. They know that if students don’t attend their programs, it will be a big challenge for the program to meet its goals and objectives.

When a program has clearly defined objectives, a schedule to meet those objectives, qualified staff members and students who attend regularly, the program tends to yield positive results , such as higher test scores and better work habits .

Parents and caretakers who know to look for these features should be better able to choose the best after-school program to meet their children’s needs.

The evidence that homework aids student achievement is inconclusive (Center for Public Education, 2007). 


Yet, for many students, not completing homework on time, or completing it incorrectly, can leave them at a serious disadvantage as they try to progress successfully through school. It is also important to note that well-designed homework, instead of just “throwing worksheets at students,” is more likely to have merit and can be a positive connection between school and afterschool programs. Combining well-designed homework with other academic enrichment activities in afterschool can provide a well-rounded package of expanded learning opportunities that contribute to school success and positive youth development.


Homework has maintained a role as a traditional component of the education system over many generations, although it has not been totally proven to be effective as a tool for improving students’ learning. A battle waged in recent decades over the value of homework did not come to a definitive conclusion, leaving both proponents and opponents with research they can cite to support either side of the debate. 1  It appears that the presence of homework serves more to forestall a decline in performance (Morrison, Storino, Robertson, Weissglass, & Dondero, 2000) rather than to advance achievement; however, making homework completion just one element of a broader, comprehensive afterschool program enhances its value.


Despite the conflicted research base, school policies continue to mandate and teachers continue to assign homework. This reality is where afterschool programs must position themselves, regardless of any personal opinions on homework. The general charge of an afterschool program is to help students succeed in school; and if homework is required by the school, then many afterschool programs see homework support as part of that charge. Going a step further is to encourage staff buy-in and enthusiasm for a program culture that embraces homework time as useful and important, rather than a bore and a chore for all involved. 


This commitment to productive homework time can be bolstered by a program’s recognition that well-designed homework, as part of a broader afterschool initiative, not only can provide benefits to youth but also serve to reinforce some of the desired—and often required—yet hard-to-come-by program goals: (a) homework is a natural link between afterschool and school, (b) homework is a promising bridge between afterschool and families, (c) homework supports principles of youth development that are central to afterschool programs, and (d) homework help can be a hook to engage students in expanded learning and broader opportunities. 


Supporting the School Day and Connecting With Teachers


Homework serves as a natural point of connection between school-day staff and afterschool staff, whose roles are parallel yet often isolated. Many school-day teachers do not ask for help from afterschool, or even do not picture the potential for afterschool programming to aid in school-day goals. The practitioner who takes the first step to building relationships with school-day staff can demonstrate that program practices, such as homework support or tutoring, are working toward the same outcomes the school-day teachers hope to achieve. 


Once this common understanding has been reached, the relationship can be maintained through intentional and sustained communication. A regular schedule of check-ins via phone or e-mail or in person should be established. Tools such as a homework contract or a homework completion tracking document allow both sides to stay up-to-date without adding additional strain on job responsibilities. By using such tools and scheduling regular check-ins, afterschool staff can more readily ask school-day teachers for help with students’ more difficult assignments. In a time when 89% of students stress about homework (Met Life, 2007) this communication builds trust that makes students more confident in the program’s ability to be helpful and meet student needs. 


In rural Missouri, for example, the West Plains R-7 Before and After School Education program utilizes the regular school day homework planner to track student assignments and facilitate information sharing between afterschool staff and teachers. The planner includes space for both groups to sign and record relevant information each day. The program director also takes advantage of the school district’s data system to track student achievement, routinely meeting with teachers when students fall behind. This real-life example illustrates the kind of collaboration and mutual support that many afterschool programs have found to be a critical ingredient in boosting student achievement.


Opening up the avenues of communication between school and afterschool was the focus of a pilot project conducted by the University of Pittsburgh’s Office of Child Development during the 2010–2011 school year. This project, funded by the Heinz Endowments, was a partnership with Pittsburgh Public Schools and five local afterschool program providers. The partnership developed a set of communication strategies based on research that indicates that formal communication between teachers and afterschool providers supports quality homework time in the afterschool setting. 


Linking together on homework can even open the door to more substantive school-afterschool collaborations—one of the hallmarks of quality afterschool programs.


Easing the Pressure off Families


Students are not the only ones whose stress levels rise with homework; in today’s society, with more single parents and more dual-income families, the demands of home life leave little time for parents to offer homework help. Most parents want their children to do homework, and they see the importance of connecting with what their children are doing in school, but dinner time, chores, and leisure activities compete with homework time. An overload of homework also competes with sleep, which suffers as a result for students, not just their overtired parents (Dudley-Maring, 2003). 


By providing a structured and supportive space for homework time, afterschool programs can become an ally of busy parents. This program role again opens up an opportunity for communication, in this case with families. The tools mentioned above, such as the homework contract, can include families as participants, and informal conversations about homework can reassure parents that their children are completing assignments, indicate what is left to be done at home with bigger projects or additional assignments, and provide a sought-after link by proxy from the parent to the school day. Through this link, an afterschool program kindles homework’s role as a cornerstone to facilitating family-to-school communication as it contributes to parents’ understanding of what school expectations are and offers direction for how they can support their children (Perlman & Redding, 2011). 


For example, the East Allen Family Resource Center in New Haven, Indiana, requires all staff to speak with parents who come to pick up their students in the program and share information about their students’ progress with homework. “We really love the parents who choose to pick up their students from the school. It provides such a wonderful opportunity for parents to see what their child is doing, the environment that is provided for them, and have face-to-face time talking with staff,” notes the program director. To reach parents who may not be able to pick up their children in person, staff routinely make phone calls to students’ homes to discuss student achievement. 


In considering homework support as one component of a family involvement plan, an afterschool program is again making strides in the direction of program quality. 


Using Homework Time to Enhance Youth Development


Within the body of evidence that exists about homework, studies have shown that homework does play a role in building skills that equip young people to be more efficient and motivated students and prepare them for 21st century careers. By completing homework, students gain soft skills such as greater self-direction, self-discipline, organization, and more independent problem solving (Protheroe, 2009). 


In four charter high schools in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, such skills are coupled with homework time in deliberate lessons taught through “mini clinics” by Foundations, Inc.’s Prep Zone Plus afterschool program. Mini clinics are quick (lasting about 20 minutes), relevant, and engaging lessons that address a variety of study skills and life skills, from reading for meaning to budgeting to selecting colleges. For students who complete their homework early or need extra assistance with certain skills, the mini clinics provide a robust but palatable lesson. Students feel that they are getting more for their time and gaining skills that will be useful as they progress toward college, careers, and independent life. 


From its experience of operating homework-based afterschool programs over the past decade, Foundations has learned that a substantive way to improve homework time and other elements of afterschool is to listen to young people in afterschool settings and solicit and use feedback from school-day teachers, administrators, and parents. 


Going Beyond Homework


Quality afterschool programs, even homework-based ones, build out engaging learning opportunities that go beyond homework and offer value-added programming. Often after homework time ends, students attend their choice of enrichment clubs (for example, robotics, chess, art, music, cooking, service learning) to round out their afterschool experience. Research shows that afterschool programs with multifaceted programming are more likely to achieve the greatest academic gains (Pearson, Russell, & Reisner, 2007). 


Starting in 2011 and continuing through 2012, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Indianapolis has been working to go beyond homework and infuse academics into regular club programming. Through a grant from the Lilly Endowmentand a partnership with the Center for Afterschool and Expanded Learning at Foundations, Inc., Boys and Girls Clubs of Indianapolis has focused on creating a sustainable approach to academically-focused enrichment across seven sites. Staff receive ongoing training on topics such as planning hands-on activities linked to academic standards, project-based learning, STEM, and literacy in out-of-school time. In turn, staff are supported by leadership teams to implement meaningful enrichment activities into a range of existing programming, from art projects to basketball tournaments. 


The enrichment opportunities offered on top of homework support help students see how they can apply what they’re learning to real-life situations, build confidence through the mastery of new talents or completion of significant projects, and understand the connections between what they are doing now and their future possibilities. 


Conclusion and Recommendations


Relationships with the school day, connections to families, youth development practices, and using the attraction of completing homework to engage students in expanded learning and broader opportunities are enhanced with a positive approach to homework.


Below are a number of key recommendations to make homework a positive component of quality afterschool programs: 


• Set up systems for communication between afterschool instructors and school-day teachers that keep everyone up to date. Do the same with families.
• Create a physical environment that encourages homework completion—include quiet space with individual desks for assignments that require deep concentration, bigger tables for study groups to gather, couches for catching up on reading, and a resource area with reference materials.

• Build in opportunities for youth choice. Do some students study better when they can listen to music through headphones? Can students seek help from peers or adults? Can they choose which assignment they want to work on first?

• Keep homework time active, even when all the assignments are done. Offer short, self-directed activities such as brain teasers, board games, or activity centers that students can enjoy while still reinforcing some academic and 21st century skills . . . not just worksheets.

• Sometimes the best homework help is just directing students to the right resources they can employ to answer a tricky question. Refrain from giving them the answer; instead, empower them to find it on their own.

• Be aware of families’ homework preferences. Some families want their students to complete as much homework as possible in the afterschool program; others may want to work with their children on some assignments at home, too.

• Keep groups fluid, not static. Depending on the students, the assignments, and the day, change grouping arrangements frequently.
• Expand your own view of homework as a positive element of expanded learning. Remember that you are a role model, and students may adopt your attitude toward homework.


If afterschool programs—and their school partners—use these recommendations, dogs all across the country can experience fewer stomachaches from the proverbial eating of the homework.

Boston Public Library Launches Homework Assistance Program (HAP) for the 2021-2022 School Year

“As we enter a new school year, the BPL is dedicated to helping students across the city succeed, both academically and personally,” said BPL President David Leonard. “HAP is designed to aid students as they face the unique set of opportunities and challenges that the 2021-2022 school year brings. We aim to create a safe space for young Bostonians to learn, and find mentors to help them. Our youth engagement services are critical as we continue to navigate and recover from the social impacts of COVID-19.”  

Sessions will take place Mondays – Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 pm and are open on a drop-in basis, registration is not required. Mentorship is available in Arabic, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and Vietnamese. See the full language schedule below. Students can join in-person at the following branches: Adams Street, Brighton, Codman Square, Connolly, East Boston, Egleston Square, Fields Corner, Grove Hall, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Lower Mills, Mattapan, Parker Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, South End, and Uphams Corner, or online via Zoom from any location.   

There will be 55  homework assistance mentors in grades 10-12 spread across the branches, all trained by Harvard University’s Public School Partnerships team, the developers of  SmartTALK. The goal of the program is to create both in-person and virtual spaces for students to work on homework with peers or to get extra guidance on assignments in any subject, from sciences to humanities.

The Boston Public Library’s Homework Assistance Program (HAP) provides free, 100% accessible academic support for thousands of K-8 students in the city. HAP also provides employment and post-secondary skills development for over 50 high-achieving Boston ‘Teen Mentors’ each year. These exceptional youth deliver a cumulative 10,000 group and one-on-one tutoring lessons annually.

Homework Assistance Program (HAP)

(Homework Assistance Program has been suspended until future notice)

HAP (Homework Assistance Program) is a program sponsored by Holy Disciples Catholic Church and dedicated to helping students at grade levels K-12 succeed in school. All are welcome at Holy Disciples; you need not be a member of Holy Disciples nor share the Catholic faith to participate in any way in HAP. We do expect all who participate in the program to respect Holy Disciples as a faith based community and not undermine the goals and mission of the community.

Safety and respecting the privacy of participants in HAP is important to Holy Disciples and HAP. The Archdiocese of Seattle requires that anyone (excluding minors) working with minors or vulnerable adults in parish programs such as HAP must be certified by completing a short training program and passing a criminal background check.

How, When, and Where to Use HAP

Tutoring is available at the times and places shown below on a drop in basis. Before tutoring can begin, a parent or guardian must complete a HAP Registration Form . The information on the form is used as a source of contact information if an emergency occurs while a student is at a HAP session, to inform HAP users of information concerning the program and to ask HAP users to evaluate the program. The form will become part of the Student's HAP Packet which must be brought to each HAP session. The packet will also contain reports written by each tutor who works with the student. This report provides information for parents/guardians and subsequent tutors about what has occurred at tutoring sessions. The registration form is available at HAP sessions or can be downloaded and filled out before coming to your first HAP session. Also read HAP Student and Parent/Guardian Guide below before your first HAP session. 

Tutoring will occur at the following times and places:

Mondays 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm - Classroom 4, entrance faces 187th St E.

Wednesdays 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm - Classroom 4, entrance faces 187th St E.

The classroom is in the large building on the Holy Disciples Parish site.

Remember to bring to each session materials pertinent to the help you seek, e. g. textbooks, paper, pencil, calculator, assignments, work returned by your teacher, etc. and your Student's HAP Packet.

College degree or better to work at Chegg

While finding details about the qualifications of Chegg's "experts" is unclear on the website itself, looking at Chegg's job offerings shows that they require at least a college degree in the subject the tutors are helping out with. In some cases with more advanced subjects, tutors and homework helpers are required to take additional exams through Chegg to prove they're knowledgeable in updated methodologies or degree-related practices.

Chegg works on a subscription basis. A subscription to Chegg Study which includes the Homework Help, tutoring, and other features comes at a monthly cost of $14.95, providing full access. The subscription includes 20 homework questions per month. Questions beyond the allotted 20 can be purchased separately, although the pricing details for this service are not explicitly outlined on the website. Regrettably, Chegg lacks a demo or free trial for its textbook solutions tool, which offers step-by-step explanations and guided video walkthroughs. So, you'll have to join the program to test it out. While you can cancel at any time, that lack of a preview is a little frustrating.

7-day refund policy

If you're not happy with the tutoring services you get from Chegg, there's a Study Guarantee program in place. This means you can reach out to Chegg within seven days of your first session, sharing why you're dissatisfied with the service. Chegg will then carefully review your case and, if they agree, you'll get a refund. While this isn't as concrete as some other guarantees, we're happy to see that Chegg now offers this refund option as it wasn't clearly defined the last time we reviewed the company.

Reputation has risen in recent years

Chegg previously lacked a rating from the Better Business Bureau, so in that respect, we're impressed by how far the company has come. Chegg has brought its rating to a "B+" from the BBB, which is much more reliable. However, it still has mid-tier ratings from third-party review sites. Although these student reviews are primarily centered on textbook rentals, we have seen a gradual improvement. On the other hand, feedback on homework help resources is relatively scarce. Some reviews highlight concerns that Chegg prioritizes providing quick answers over comprehensive explanations during tutoring sessions, potentially limiting thorough understanding of the material.

Solid option but could be more transparent

Chegg Study presents itself as a potential resource for students seeking prompt solutions to homework problems. The platform allows you to ask specific questions and receive step-by-step instructions or quickly find textbook answers. While it offers practical assistance, it is a little less helpful than some other services that offer more transparency on what the services entail. Chegg Study appears suitable for obtaining swift solutions but may not be the optimal choice for in-depth concept immersion. It has raised its reputation in recent years, and is a go-to source for textbooks. For all these reasons, and its affordable pricing, Chegg earns a solid rating in our review.

The Princeton Review offers a grade improvement assurance of at least half a letter grade (or three points) higher if your student is K-12 and attends 2 hours of tutoring per month in a single subject for three consecutive months. If you follow those particular guidelines but don't see the promised improvement, The Princeton Review promises a full refund of their services.

With an "A-" rating from the Better Business Bureau and positive student reviews, The Princeton Review stands out as a valuable resource for those committed to their education and willing to invest in their learning. According to third-party review sites, The Princeton Review has an impressive average rating of 4.4 stars out of 5. The front page of Infoplease is heralded by a cluttered interface full of blue hyperlinks, different-sized fonts, and extremely small or disorganized text. What we do know is that Pear Deck Learning kept TutorMe's adherence to one-on-one tutoring sessions as its main drive. But while the company used to have an impressive track record (back when it was TutorMe) of over 1.3 million live sessions, writing lab submissions, and 705,000 hours of one-on-one interaction, Pear Deck Learning doesn't have the same reputation.

Site is missing major details

Starting your homework help with Pear Deck Learning is hidden behind a paywall. There's no detail about what you can expect from the program until you click on the "request a quote" button. There isn't even an online chatbot to ask questions. This is a huge departure from how Pear Deck Learning ran things back when it was still TutorMe. Despite a gorgeous design interface, we're a little skeptical about this new rebrand.

Focuses on individual tutoring

When it comes to tutoring at Pear Deck Learning, you'll get one-on-one virtual lessons. In addition to the live sessions, Pear Deck Learning still claims an extensive catalog of subjects. But, Pear Deck Learning is a tutoring-only service. If you're looking for an online library or asynchronous learning tools for your homework help, you won't find them here. Unfortunately, details about what you'll find in these one-on-one sessions are scarce.

The requirements for tutors to work at Pear Deck Learning appear much less stringent than they were in the past. Potential tutors only need to be 18 years old and have proficiency in the subjects they want to tutor in. This is a major departure from other top competitors who require college degrees or even higher education for their staff members.

While TutorMe had a detailed description of prices, Pear Deck Learning in its new form does not. As we mentioned earlier, all of the details about the tutoring program are hidden behind the "quote" button. There are no prices (even general ones) listed on the site. So, without submitting your personal information and waiting for a quote to pop up in your email, there's no way to know for sure how much you might be paying for Pear Deck Learning's services. Unsurprisingly, there were no details about refunds either.

Lack of a reputation raises questions

Unfortunately, Pear Deck Learning is so new since its rebranding from TutorMe, the new company doesn't have any ratings on the Better Business Bureau. Since the company has been extremely different in practice and presentation since the rebrand, we don't feel comfortable substituting TutorMe's old "A" rating from the Better Business Bureau. In terms of third-party reviews, there's really nothing out there for Pear Deck Learning either. One site offers 16 reviews with a 5-star average, so maybe there's hope for this rebrand, but we're still skeptical.

Rebrand is still too fresh

At the end of the day, Pear Deck Learning just doesn't stand out the way it did before the rebrand. With little to no information on major details of the site, we're not sure what the prices are, what the tutoring sessions are really like, or if you should trust them to help out with your homework. So, with a lack of transparency being the primary concern here, Pear Deck Learning earns a lower rating in our review. We hope that the company will be able to impress us in the future once it's fully settled from the rebrand, but right now, you're better off looking somewhere else for homework help services.

The chat representative told us that the tutors at Top Homework Helper are all "Ph.D. level" . This was highly impressive compared to some companies that hire those with high school diplomas. However, the chat rep also used some pretty broken English in our communication which raised some eyebrows. We're not sure if "Ph.D. level" means that the tutors hold Ph.D.s or if this is just a "level" of knowledge that employees have.

Pricing lacks transparency

Another place we weren't particularly impressed with was the lack of transparency regarding prices. Top Homework Helper uses a quote-based payment system where you pay for each question you ask. While this avoids paying monthly for tutoring services you may or may not need, it does leave a lot of questions. The only statement on the website is that the prices are "reasonable." But to see any pricing, you'll have to make an account and submit a homework request.

One free revision

Top Homework Helper doesn't appear to offer refunds or guarantees. However, the company does offer a free revision if the original solution to your question is insufficient or unhelpful. This is particularly beneficial when you have writing assignments you need Top Homework Helper's assistance with.

The total range of services includes 4 different options to support your education. You can expect textbook solutions, docu-assist (where you upload your homework problems and Quiz+ will help you finish it), 24/7 homework assistance via community help, and flashcards. To use the homework help section of the site, you can type out your question or upload a photo, select the subject of your questions, and then Quiz+ posts your question to a public forum where other community members help you answer your question. You can choose to do this anonymously or through your username. However, it's unclear if this is free or part of the premium membership.

No on-staff tutors

As all of the services are completed by the community (like homework help) or by AI (like the docu-assist), there aren't any on-staff tutors or experts to help you out at Quiz+. This program appears pretty hands-off beyond facilitating the database for students.

No details regarding prices

Pricing is a bit of a sticking point with Quiz+. We couldn't find any mention of the price either for pay-per-question or for the premium membership. Even with outside research from reviews or online blogs, it was completely unclear. Quiz+'s pricing structure appears to be "quote-based" according to one source, but we were unable to verify that from Quiz+ itself. For this reason, we're a little wary of suggesting Quiz+. With unclear pricing, it doesn't stand out as the most trustworthy place to put your money.

No refunds allowed

We were able to find a refund policy, and it isn't particularly uplifting. According to Quiz+'s terms and conditions, the company will not offer refunds of any kind. Their FAQ section says this specifically: "All Subscription fees are non-refundable. No refund will be granted regardless of the reason. This policy is strict. You recognize and agree that you shall not be entitled to a refund for any purchase under any circumstances." Yikes - talk about zero customer service!

Recent reviews show significant concern

Quiz+ had a higher rating than we expected given the general lack of customer service demonstrated by the company's policies. But the ratings still aren't great. From the Better Business Bureau, Quiz+ holds a "B-" rating, and outside the BBB the reviews are decidedly average as well. From Trustpilot, the company has earned an average rating of 3.5 stars out of 5, though on Sitejabber, that score is a much lower 2.6-star average. Customers are calling the "free trial" from Quiz+ a "scam" as it only lasts 48 hours before you're charged. Customers also note that they had problems with the billing system where they were charged too much and couldn't secure a refund due to the no refund policy at Quiz+. Most of the recent reviews recommend staying away from Quiz+

Last place for customer service

While there are some solid learning tools at Quiz+, the lack of transparency and lack of customer service are two red flags you don't want to ignore. With our caution echoed by warnings in recent third-party reviews, it's a no-brainer for us to suggest you try one of the higher-rated services in our review instead. For these reasons, as well as its dishonest pricing and completely unbending policy regarding refunds, Quiz+ earns a low rating. Keep your money and try another company first.

The After School Homework Assistance and Tutorial program starts two weeks after the opening of schools and remains open until the closing of all schools.

We have successfully recruited 28 students for the after school program from the six week summer camp program we provided to the community this year. The summer camp focused on learning during the summer break from school and keeping children actively involved with reading and math exercises.

The purpose of the After School Homework Assistance and Tutorial program is to provide a safe, drug free environment for children in the community to gather for focus, study and fun.

The program will operate Monday through Thursday. Some Fridays will be reserved for fun or field trips in the afternoon. The daily schedule begins with providing supper to the students upon arrival. The meals are prepared and delivered each day from the Maryland Food Bank. After supper, students will go to their grade group to complete their homework. The program will serve students in grades 1 st through 9 th . High school students are encouraged to volunteer and complete their community service learning hours and study in the reserved computer room at the center. All volunteers agreed to background checks to ensure the safety of all children. Parents will also support the fundraising efforts for the program.

Tutors will be at every station to assist with the home assignments. All tutors will go through a brief training program to understand the core principles of mentoring, safety, rules and regulations. This volunteer based program accepts applications from interested adults who are willing to give their time and support. All children are monitored in a big group session at all times.

The program will include supper, snacks, academic games, tutorials, mentoring, a Reading Club, a chess club, a nutrition club, a poetry club, an art club and a foreign language component.

The Druid Heights community is located two miles northwest of downtown Baltimore in zip code 21217 of the 44th Legislative District, within Census Tract 1403. Using the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance’s (BNIA) Vital Sign neighborhoods map, as a resource, Druid Heights is located at Area 53. According to the BNAI, Area 53 consists of approximately 10,404 people, of which 51% are female and 49% are males, with a median age of 35.4. The population consists of 95% African Americans, 2% Caucasian, 1.5 % Hispanic, 1% are of mixed race and .5% are Korean. The average household income is $14,487 with 69% earning $0 –$ 25,000 annually.

Because of the community’s limited number of indigenous homeowners, business ownership, fully employed heads of households, over 90% of all crimes are characteristic of a poor community – illegal drug activity, burglaries, youth violence, domestic violence and theft. The juvenile arrest rate, although declining, is still high compared to the overall statistics for the city. The area’s juvenile crime rate stands at 229 arrests per every 1,000 youth compared to the City’s 140.

Crime and drug activity in the Druid Heights community is high. Most parents are at work when children return home from school. This is a critical time in the day when children need supervision and academic support. The after school program will keep them out of the street and away from trouble. The after school program will identify the needs of families and provide resources and assistance from program offered at the community center. Families will access to a myriad of services.

Staff from the program and designated volunteers will visit the schools of the participants on a bi-weekly basis or as necessary to determine the progress of our students.

Report cards will be collected from all parents and the staff will hold a “Report Card Day” celebration. A core principle is to celebrate all progress for each student. We believe in positive reinforcement and will apply it on the daily basis. A cart will be posted with the name of each participant where award points can be added for successes throughout the school year. All awards, certificates and good Progress Reports will earn students are point on the board. The points can also be awarded for participation and good behavior.

In the after school program children are encouraged to read books, practice good grammar and do math exercises while learning and having fun. The program will serve three major goals for the community:

1. Providing a safe, drug free environment where children are excited to come learn and play

2. To reinforce reading and math skills during the homework time in order to prevent children from falling behind while reinforcing academic achievements.

3. To support struggling families by giving their children education, mentorship and hope for a better future.

Our Anticipated results and outcomes are:

• Youth will be inspired to have a 90% attendance record at school; the current attendance rate for middle school and high school students is below 50%.
• Youth’s grades will be brought above a satisfactory level as to ensure passing to the grade level.
• Youth will learn the virtues and values of respect and tolerance for cultures and traditions that are not their own.
• Youth will learn conflict resolution and that violence will not resolve tension.
• Youth will learn literacy building skills, grammar and English through practical application, practice and repetition.
• Youth will learn mathematics and principles of monetary value through practical application, practice and repetition.
• Youth will be encouraged and promoted in hopes that 25% of the students will make the Honor Roll.

Volunteerism

Many community residents and volunteers from around the City are looking for ways to give back.  This program will offer an opportunity for people to come in and assist the children in the community. All volunteers will be subject to a background check and will work under the direction of the Office of Community Resources. Mr. Tavon Benson, Community Organizer is the direct contact for the program. Mr. Anthony Pressley, Director of Community Resources is the general overseer of the program. All reporting is to Mr. Kelly D. Little, the Executive Director. The program will recognize the volunteers on a quarterly basis and award gifts donated by Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Parental Involvement

Each parent will be requested to sign an application for volunteering. The program hopes to have the full support of the parents and to serve as the liaison between the student, school and family. “It takes a village to raise a child”. The community is that village of resources, support and strength. We believe it is critical to have the parents’ support as we give the extra attention needed for each student.

Many young people say that adults are not consistent. We will work to provide the consistency young people desire. Volunteers, who pass the background check and are willing to participate, will be asked to mentor a youth. The goal is to have a one on one professional mentor for all students above the 5 th grade. We have solicited the support of area universities and colleges to recruit students who wish to tutor and mentor in our program.

School Supplies

The program will work to keep school supplies for children throughout the school year. Many children are not properly equipped for learning and advancing. We will seek donations from area foundations and businesses.

Program Resources

The program will use the Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity system for extra- curricular activities. This online resource provides technical support for after school programs. After we discover the area of concern for each student, “academic weakness” we will designate a portion of the program’s time to tutor in that area. The Thinkfinity model is very effective.

The program will focus on what the teacher is teaching the children and what the children should know at their grade level.

Academic games will be used in order for children to learn while having fun. The program will also take suggestions from the participants.

The After School program will provide incentives to children. This will include gift cards to the movies and area businesses, books and prizes.
