Vibration Measurement: Wireless Portable Stroke Monitor

A manufacturer of vibrating feeder equipment was purchasing a private-labelled off-the-shelf Bluetooth Low Energy enabled accelerometer. The supplier was unable to keep up with product demand and had raised the price significantly. A lower cost solution was needed.

Topics: Electronic Engineering

Power Electronics: Digital Pump Drive

Power a laboratory pump system occupying only one-half the bench space with one-quarter the volume of the current product, and increase performance while also reducing cost.

Topics: Electronic Engineering , Motor Drives

Water Chemistry: Chemical Feed Controller

Bring laboratory-grade water analysis and chemical feed control to large-scale commercial and industrial water cooling tower systems.

A custom designed, solid-state, highly accurate multi-channel fluorometer combined with a microprocessor-driven chemical feed controller.

Accurate chemical monitoring and feed control of chemicals in cooling tower water systems is required to reduce mineral scale, corrosion, and microbe growth. Relatively high volumes of expensive chemicals are required to protect these systems.

MathCad Circuit Modeling: Improving Circuit Design

Meet aggressive project schedules while reducing hardware development costs by improving the circuit design process.

The addition of detailed electronic circuit modeling in the latest release of the PTC MathCad software environment provides a powerful tool to simulate, optimize, and document the circuit design prior to building a PC board.

SPICE simulation alone will only report the performance of a circuit design, but it will not recommend component values to meet the design goals.

Industrial Monitoring & Control: Boiler Control

Create a modular, expandable, configurable and robust boiler monitoring and control system that can be used world-wide.  The system must be able to connect to a wide range of external input sources as well as control external devices.  Ethernet, USB and modem connectivity are required.

An NXP 32-bit ARM7 processor, multiple Microchip 8-bit PICs, Micro Digital SMX operating system, ANSI C, and the IAR Embedded Workbench were used to create this extendable, robust, highly flexible system.

Tecnova was asked to build the next generation of industrial controllers for a long standing customer. The customer's goal was ambitious – configurable enough to support multiple current product lines as well as future products not yet envisioned.

13: Student led case study in engineering

This is more of a student guided learning chapter. Since this is not a typical textbook section that consists of an instructor lecturing the student, this chapter might at times seem incomplete. It is intended to be incomplete as it is up to the student to complete it with guidance from a live teacher (whether in-person or over the internet). The basic idea is simple: a real engineering project is discussed in detail by the teacher in a manner that is consistent with real world activities as opposed to a more typical lecture (which has its place, just not here).

The case study herein is to design and construct a detector characterization laboratory which will include examination of said design using professional papers (examples of pre-peer reviewed papers can be found at: https://arxiv.org ). The student is expected to do all the research to prepare for discussion each day as if they were in a meeting to determine the direction of the engineering project. This is a participatory activity. In general there are really no wrong or right answers as long as they are within the scope of the research (if we ask what a chair is and you say it is a coffee cup...then yes that is wrong - but to say a chair is a couch is open to debate which should then occur among your classmates). It is expected that the instructor will be sufficiently skilled 1 in the subject matter to be able to take over the conversation and help the student navigate the subjects that they are not ready to handle as freshman. Lectures might occur when these type of road blocks emerge, but they should be infrequent.

The intend of this excursion is to build something to highlight different engineering disciplines. This particular case study centering on detectors will highlight electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, optical engineering, system engineering, chemical engineering, and materials engineering. There is no reason a different case study (say bridges) could be done, but it should follow the methodology highlighted here.

1 Note if the instructor is not sufficiently skilled in detector characterization then we would suggest the instructor modifies this to something he is skilled in, like a, the design of a bridge or water treatment plant, etc.

  • 13.1: Example case study involving detectors characterization This is an example problem with criteria that is modifiable for the student led case study in engineering. It is expected that each student would write a large report (say 25 pages or so) to show their understanding of the discussion. Figures should be included including CADs.
  • 13.2: Information for example case study involving detector characterization This is a hodgepodge of links etc. to help the student with the assignment posed in the last section. This section is meant to be edited constantly.

New Ethics Case Studies Published

NSPE Today New Ethics Case Studies Published

NSPE’s Board of Ethical Review has published six new case studies that provide engineering ethics guidance using factbased scenarios. The cases cover the topics of plan stamping; gifts; the public health, safety, and welfare; conflicts of interest; responsible charge; and job qualifications. NSPE established the Board of Ethical Review in June 1954 due to many requests by engineers, state societies, and chapters for interpretations of the Code of Ethics in specific circumstances. Since the publishing of the first case in 1958, which involved questionable actions on a World Bank-financed hydroelectric project, the case catalog has grown to nearly 650.

Today, there are many real-world examples in which engineering ethics has a direct impact on the public, especially those related to technology advancement. For example, NSPE encourages policymakers to protect the public health, safety, and welfare when developing artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. In comments to the National Institute of Standards and Technology in August, NSPE called for the involvement of ethically accountable licensed professional engineers or duly certified individuals in the AI development process. The Society has also called on NIST to create AI technical standards that include an ethical framework that can be applied universally in the development of AI decision-making.

Each of the BER’s just-released cases dives into subjects that practicing professional engineers and engineer interns can face on the job. In Case 20-4 , a PE for a metropolitan water commission and a consulting engineer retained by the commission are faced with ethical dilemmas surrounding the commission’s consideration of a change in its water supply source—a change with public health, safety, and welfare implications. In another case ( 20-1 ), an engineer intern applies for a position at a consulting firm. The job requires the candidate to hold a PE license or to become licensed within 90 days. The firm offers the job to the engineer intern, but complications arise when the EI fails the PE exam and is found to have withheld information from the firm.

  • Engineering Ethics

The following series of engineering ethics cases were created by interviewing numerous engineers from Silicon Valley and beyond.

The cases have been written, anonymized, and honed to highlight the ethical content from each interview. While these cases are meant for engineering students and professionals for their professional development, nearly all of the cases occur in the context of business, and therefore are also relevant for those seeking business ethics cases.

These cases are suitable as homework and/or for classroom discussion. The goal of this project is to acquaint engineering students and professionals with the variety of ethical experiences of engineering as practiced “in the field.” By becoming familiar with problems faced by other engineers we hope to thereby prepare those reading these cases if they too encounter difficult ethical dilemmas in their work.

Cases range from the mundane to the deadly. While we do not reveal how each particular case turned out, in general they turned out well – the people involved made the right decisions. But this is not to say that all of these right decisions came without personal cost. A few of the engineers did face negative repercussions and a very few even needed to find new employment. However, overall the interviewees were satisfied with how events turned out, even if they faced negative repercussions for their good decisions. They understood that doing the right thing is good in itself, regardless of the personal consequences they may have faced.

The engineering ethics cases can be sorted into the following categories:

  • Academic Ethics
  • Bioengineering
  • Business Ethics
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer/Software Engineering

Case Studies: Supporting Electronics & next generation ICT

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Almost every aspect of modern life is dependent on a secure and reliable communication network, from multimillion euro banking transactions to the transmission of vital patient information in emergency medical care. The ongoing miniaturisation and ever increasing operating speeds of electronic devices not only challenge current measurement capabilities, but also create a requirement to characterise new ICT technologies. This requires the metrology infrastructure to continue to develop to meet current and future needs for the next generation of electronics technologies.

Better electromagnetic compatibility measurements for electronic devices

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Electronic devices generate low-power radio frequency and microwave fields during use. These electromagnetic fields can interact adversely with other nearby electronics, damaging or impairing their function. To minimise this electromagnetic ‘emissions’ and ‘immunity’ testing of devices are required before market release. However, the simplified characterisation and modelling approaches currently used are insufficient for more advanced, modern devices.

Reducing aero-engine operational costs

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Accurate air pressure measurements are essential for the safe and efficient operation of modern aircraft. The aero-engine environment is especially demanding for onboard sensors used to monitor and control important aircraft systems. Manufacturer blueprints of future, more fuel-efficient, engines specify operation at even higher temperatures, imposing tougher requirements for pressure sensor reliability. However, no calibration service could demonstrate long-term measurement stability for such sensors.

Practical 5G signal quality testing

topics for case study in electronics engineering

The promise of fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks is ubiquitous telecoms and a platform from which innovations can exploit breakthrough levels of connectivity. Full readiness will require several technologies to be developed, presenting some complex testing challenges. Reducing unwanted radio signal interference will be critical for maintaining device connectivity, but no metric was validated as capable of providing accurate measurements of signal quality.

Standards for quantum cryptography

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Future confidence in Europe’s digital economy may be strongly influenced by confidence in the security of underlying digital infrastructures. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a promising category of technologies that could provide long-term communications security but has, to date, only been commercialised by a limited number of suppliers serving niche, security-critical, markets. Wider acceptance is hampered by the absence of relevant security evaluation standards.

Metrology for quantum communications

topics for case study in electronics engineering

As quantum computing research efforts bear fruit, trust in the security of the existing digital economy will be undermined, as practical systems may be capable of quickly defeating common data encryption methods. Quantum cryptography systems could provide the next generation of data security, but implementations of these technologies can only be secure if discrete components are well understood, test methods agreed, and test facilities available.

Future-proofing data security

topics for case study in electronics engineering

If, as is forecast in the next decade or so, quantum computing is developed into a working technology, new encryption methods will be needed so electronic communications can be kept ‘quantum-safe’. In theory, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols could be used to defy all attempts at decryption, even by a quantum computer. However, unforeseen and undocumented behaviours of component technologies could leave security ‘backdoors’, rendering QKD systems potentially vulnerable to known hacking methods.

ATOMIC CLOCKS FOR SATELLITES

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Navigation, from phone-based maps to shipping routes, depends on global positioning satellites and their on-board atomic clocks. Several bulky clocks are installed in each satellite, so if one fails another can continue to provide reliable time keeping. This redundancy significantly increases launch costs. Europe’s satellite positioning system, Galileo, is spurring atomic clock innovations to create a new generation of smaller, more robust clocks with potential applications in other industries.

TRANSPORTABLE ATOMIC CLOCKS

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Atomic timekeeping provides communication systems relaying information with very precise timestamping, and navigation systems with the ability to exactly pinpoint locations. The most accurate atomic clocks rely on expert staff maintaining complex operating conditions to ensure their performance. As applications requiring precise timekeeping increase, simpler yet highly accurate atomic clocks, suitable for use without expert supervision, are needed to supply the accuracy needed by industry and commerce.

ADVANCING QUANTUM COMMUNICATIONS

topics for case study in electronics engineering

From banking to healthcare, data security is crucial to modern society. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which creates shared encryption keys using single photons, offers a level of security beyond that possible with classical communication techniques. To support the roll-out of this technology, new methods are required to precisely characterise the lasers and detectors used and ensure the performance of QKD systems.

BUILDING TRUST IN QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Single-photon detectors are the key component underpinning many new and emerging photonic technologies, including quantum communications, quantum computing and atmospheric sensing. To enable further developments in these fields and encourage more widespread adoption, measurements tools are needed which can validate the performance of single-photon detectors and provide confidence to end-users.

SUPPORTING MOBILE NETWORK EXPANSION

topics for case study in electronics engineering

From e-banking to social media, high quality satellite, fibre, and mobile communications are an essential part of modern life. As networks expand to meet rising demand, safety concerns over non-ionising radiation emitted by mobile phone base stations need to be addressed. One way to do so is to confirm that the power transmitted does not exceed regulatory limits. This requires reliable on-site measurements with robust links to SI units.

ADVANCED MAGNETIC SENSING

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Magnetic sensors are used in a range of applications that require high resolution data on an object’s direction and position, for example, orbiting satellites and safety systems in the automotive industry. Rapid developments in these fields require advanced sensors with significantly improved specifications, including resolution, reliability, and signal-to-noise ratio. To verify sensor specifications, users need to be able to accurately test, characterise and calibrate them.

SEMICONDUCTOR MEASUREMENTS

topics for case study in electronics engineering

To stay competitive, electronics manufacturers are constantly developing smaller microchips, requiring greater manufacturing precision. Accurate measurement techniques for the nanoscale exist, but they are slow and unsuitable for manufacturing environments. Scatterometry offers fast nanoscale routine measurements, but lacks suitable reference materials. Developing new standards to link scatterometry to established measurement techniques will improve accuracy, supporting the development of smaller electronics.

MODELLING SMALL SURFACE FEATURES

topics for case study in electronics engineering

The precise production of geometric features on nano-electronic devices becomes more challenging as they get ever smaller. Scatterometry, which measures light scattering, could be a fast, simple technique for verifying that these features meet design, but it produces huge datasets, which are slow to process using current methods. A modelling technique, Finite Element Analysis, could provide faster calculations and make scatterometry measurements viable, but investigation and validation are needed.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE THIN-FILM TECHNOLOGIES

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Lower costs and improved reliability in the manufacturing of thin films have enabled the development of a huge range of high-value technologies, from electronic displays to solar cells. However, many new thin-film technologies are highly sensitive to degradation from exposure to air and moisture, and improved measurement techniques are needed to support the cost-effective production of protective barrier layers and keep Europe at the forefront of this high-value sector.

INVESTIGATING NANO-DEFECTS

topics for case study in electronics engineering

As electronics get ever smaller, detecting defects during quality control becomes more difficult. NSMM, a scanning microscopy technique, offers a new way to spot defects by measuring electromagnetic properties and has potential for investigating new materials for faster chips. For it to be viable for either of these, traceable calibration methods are needed so ultrafast electronics manufacturers’ have confidence in its use.

NANOSCALE SURFACE MAPPING

topics for case study in electronics engineering

Manufacturers of nano-materials, such as those used in semiconductors and solar cells, need accurate tools for quality control. Knowing precisely where on a sample’s surface measurements are being made and having confidence in the results achieved are key to reliably characterising material properties. Atomic force microscopy has great potential for use in material science but problems associated with extended measurement run times and instrument drift need to be overcome.

PRECISE MEASUREMENTS FOR MICROPARTS

topics for case study in electronics engineering

The Swiss watch industry, worth 16 billion euro per year, is centred on the quality of precision micro-mechanisms, similar manufacturing techniques are also essential in the automotive and medical device industries. Product innovation to improve performance often involves new designs for ever smaller components. As parts shrink, confirming that nanoscale dimensions meet specifications requires improvements to measurement methods used for quality assurance.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE SELF-HEATING MATERIALS

topics for case study in electronics engineering

PTC thermistors are an important component in many electronic products, such as lithium-ion batteries, due to their ability to limit current and regulate temperature. However, these functions rely on the incorporation of well characterised self-heating materials in their design. Improvements to the metrology underpinning the characterisation of these materials will help the electronics industry manufacture existing products more efficiently and support the development of new products with improved performance.

Study Urges New Approach to Energy Planning

Twitter logo

The world of energy is changing so quickly that the processes used for planning can’t keep up.

UC Merced electrical engineering Professor Sarah Kurtz took part in a study that showed how swiftly the needs and resources for electricity are shifting. The study, “How Demand-Side Management Can Shape Electricity Generation Capacity Planning,” was published  last week.

It makes sense that when we plan for how much electricity we will need to generate in the coming years, the first thing we do is look at how much we needed in the past year. But given that the systems we install today could operate for more than 30 years, it’s also important to try to predict how the demand for electricity will evolve during that time, Kurtz said.

The rapid addition of electric vehicles, heat pumps and data centers are changing the demands on electricity at a fast clip. And that, the researchers point out, makes it important to rethink how and when electricity is used.

Today many utilities offer the lowest electricity rate at night when many people are asleep, so electric vehicle owners often program their home chargers to start at midnight. But most of the power available at night comes from fossil fuels, which means EV charging perpetuates the need to continue fossil-fuel electricity generation. If power loads are added during the daytime, solar is available, increasing the demand for solar electricity.

The best plan is to add loads during the day, the study indicates.

The researchers said they hope that those selecting which electricity generators to build will consider the new loads rather than designing tomorrow’s grid to look like today’s: run mostly by natural gas and coal.
