I’ve heard my grandmother’s story once a year, every year since I immigrated to the States at age four. But I never get tired of it—her determination, hard work, and astounding accomplishments leave me in awe each time. Her daughter, my mother, became extraordinary as well: she attended Stanford on a full scholarship and succeeded in her subsequent entrepreneurial pursuits.

My grandmother’s whole-hearted persistence, ambition, patience, and, most of all, grace, are traits that I intend to mimic in my own life. She had only a slim chance of succeeding in her endeavors—but was never discouraged. Instead, she pushed herself even harder, focused on disproving the odds.

This brief yet meaningful family history has humbled me, making me realize that I am only where I am today because of the efforts invested by those before me. My grandmother’s determination, sacrifice, and unrelenting drive to achieve her goals regardless of all obstacles are traits I have come to hold in highest regard. She’s taught me a lesson that will be crucial to my future: if I yearn for success, I must work for it.

Over the past thirteen years, I’ve increasingly familiarized myself with this concept. From my cartoon drawings to my paintings hung in city hall, from my first debate tournament to my 2nd-place finish at the state championship, I’ve tested this truth for myself.

My grandmother has demonstrated that with effort and dedication, I can accomplish anything and everything I set my mind to. With my life just starting and so much ahead of me, there are guaranteed to be sleepless nights, stressful days, and moments when I’m ready to quit. But seeing how my grandmother ignored all hurdles and continued, I, too, will press forward. The family history I’ve heard many times has done well for me: it has inspired me, driven me, and most of all, made me eager to take on the challenges of leading an exceptional life.

Not too long ago, I was told by a distant relative that the women in our family tend to run strong.

I can remember feeling the loud silence as I walked into the hospital room. The sight of my grandma hooked up to machines scared me.I didn’t think it would be serious. I had hoped I would still be able to make it to my school dance. I squeezed my way to the back where counters became seats and walls were solid support to lean on. “What happened?” I asked. “She had a stroke,” my brother answered me. “She’s in a coma now,” my aunt chimed in. With those words, the reality of the possibility of her death hit me hard.

Once I left the hospital, I hated myself. I thought of all the times I didn’t spend with my grandma. My friends and I heard a knock at the front door of my house, but nobody was there. I was sure it was my grandma checking up on me and making sure I’d be OK without her.

A few days later, my family decided they would take my grandmother off life support. We would do it the next day after spending the night in the hospital waiting room.

“Wake up early tomorrow. We all have to be in the room,” my aunt announced to us.

That night, all the adults were preparing us grandkids for the next day. I remember crying and the hopelessness that shot through me. I laid on the floor until I fell asleep. I slept in the small corner by the heat.

The next day, the walk to Grandma’s hospital room felt like it took forever. My heart raced, and I wanted to cry. When I entered the room, it was packed with almost 30 people squeezed in with the grandkids in the back while the adults swarmed the front hugging my grandma. The tears dripped down our faces. I watched as my aunts shrieked in pain. They wanted the grandkids to say one last word to my grandma, but I couldn’t. I was scared and hurt and everything felt broken, yet I couldn’t even gather the courage to say goodbye to her. Throughout the days leading to my grandmother’s death, I had cried only once or twice, but in that small hospital room that day my eyes flooded with tears and snot dripped down my face. My guard had finally broke down.

As I watched my grandma take her last breath, a wave of relief went over me, she wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. I reflected and saw how my family came together and to support each other. I saw the love that radiated from each one of us. I saw how raw and human my family could be.

It’s hard to talk about my feelings because in typical Hmong families we don’t express the way we feel. There’s a collective agreement to put family first before individuals. But when my grandma passed away, I finally broke the unspoken rule about feelings and spoke to my grandmother’s spirit and told her I was sorry for not speaking to her more. I allowed myself to break down and cry, something I don’t usually do.

My grandmother’s passing taught me to express myself, appreciate my family and to take advantage of the time I have. I’ve started to say what’s on my mind and advocate for my needs. I’ve also learned to tell friends and family that I love them and to be more open about my struggles with school and mental health. I’ve started to focus more on creating memories with family and friends by taking pictures and videos or going out on fun dates with them. I also concentrate more on school and prioritized my education more. Life is short, and there are always obstacles to overcome. My grandmother’s death showed me the patience and perseverance to take on anything.

At this stage of life, she still takes care of the whole family. As usual, she is the most important person in the family. Everyone values her decision and ask her before doing anything major. She is a religious woman. Most of her time, she used to spend praying. She teaches us the holy book Quran. In the time, when I was a kid, she used to teach me and a few of my cousins together. Now she doesn’t have good eyesight, but she still can read with her glasses.

Her life in a few words:

My grandma had a colorful life. My father and uncles have shared lots of stories of her. Her marriage with my grandpa has arranged so big and awesome celebration. She was the most beautiful girl in the area. Grandpa falls in love and asks her father to marry her.

Both families agreed and they got married. The most touching part of her life is, they faced some financial problems as a family. She started working as a part-time school teacher. She was really hardworking. That was really tough to maintain the whole family, lots of household works after doing teaching in the school.

But she did these successfully. Her hard work pays off and she was able to create a better place for the next generation. We love her a lot. She was a true fighter.

I and my cousins best friend:

She is my best friend. Not only I, but there also are lots of my cousins who used to spend most of the times with her. She loves us too. She never refuses us in anything. She always loves to tell us stories and teach us small lessons. She is very friendly.

After all, the whole family loves her. She has lots of contributions to this family. That’s why they never let her be down. Everyone respects her as like deities. I love my grandmother a lot too.
