Financial Support
Your PhD studies are financially supported by the MCIP program and UCLA.
The salary (stipend) for the 2023–2024 academic year is $40,651. Including tuition, fees, and benefits, the total support package is approximately $60,113.
The total support package is provided by a combination of sources, and the sources change year-to-year. During the first year, students receive their stipend, tuition (including non-resident tuition if applicable), and fees from the gateway Graduate Programs in Bioscience (GPB) as they perform laboratory rotations with MCIP faculty. The GPB contributes a declining fraction of the total support package over time, made up by support from the mentor’s research grants, or from scholarships, fellowships, or NIH training grants. The outcome is the same: your stipend, tuition, and fees are covered for five years.
During year 2 or year 3 of the program, each student will serve as a teaching assistant for an undergraduate course as part of their academic training.
In addition, each student is awarded $1,000 from the Graduate Division to present their work at academic conferences. A comprehensive document from the UCLA Graduate Division detailing student support and fellowships may be found here .

Salary and Debt by Major at UCLA
We calculated a Salary Score for each of UCLA's programs by comparing program-specific median alumni earnings to median alumni earnings for the same program across all schools that provide this data. This way, students can compare the relative salary strength of a specific major at UCLA to the same major at other schools. A school's overall score by level is based on the school's by-program performance weighted by student enrollment in each program. Data is sourced from the December 2020 release of the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard and reflects median alumni debt upon graduation and median alumni earnings in the year after graduation for students who received federal financial aid. Debt and salary numbers are shown rounded to the nearest $10.

If I can give this school 0 stars I would. THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. First off, as a Sociology major. There is NO DIVERSITY in this campus. Students think they dominant than others, just because they come to this university. Absolutely RIDICULOUS!! You have to fight for your classes, your given First or Second Pass. To register for classes. Being a senior and yet still I have a Second pass date to register for classes, making me fall behind and getting the worse timing classes.
Terrible experience for my first graduate program in this country. I am an international student and this school left me with bad taste. I was looked down upon by both students and program staff for my language fluency and my job. Professors are overrated. Every professor has their own personal agenda and is there to look for their own career. Some professors are flirty. Beautiful people get an easy pass and more marketing and personal branding opportunities. The staff lack ethics and integrity. Shameful for ... Read More a public school! They teach topics that are of no use to the real tech. world. We are students trying to make a break into our careers and the MBA program does not give us the necessary tools for us to go into the world with confidence. There is no career help or guidance too. Once we graduate, professors and alum staff drop us like hot potatoes, which says a lot about the culture. If a student speaks up, they get targeted and the door is shut on their faces - meaning, they will not get any more help, guidance from the over-rated professors, who think they are Gods. Please ask the alums. Go to a private university like USC. You will be treated better.

PhD stipend 🗣️🗣️. Hi guys! Whats the PhD stipend like across departments? ~30k. Not nearly enough for the cost of living in Westwood. Ucla uses a step system for GSRs (used to be 1-10 now is 1-6). What you get depends on the step you are hired. Different schools and departments within UCLA have different policies for this.
